Province of Ontario Considers a Breed Ban
imported_Kat replied to Shenanigans's topic in Everything about dogs
Wow I really am surprised to hear that EBT and SBT breeds come under the term of pitbull. That really is wrong classification. In N.Ireland SBT's are extremely popular and make wonderful family pets. Pitbulls are banned and have been banned for years but I shudder to think if SBT's were banned. It really is time for someone to do research and show what a pitbull is to differentiate it from other breeds. I know that in USA and Canada the breed is suffering a lot but if these other breeds that are clearly not pitbulls, are also wrongly labelled then more and more breeds will inevitably suffer. -
lmao I love the number 1 reason!

lol you think thats bad? I used to petsit for 7 Great Danes and even with a queen sized bed it was still a rather tight squeeze

I petsit for 2 Irish wolfhounds. The dog (Oliver) has had repeated surgery to slow down his growth because his owner was feeding him a colossal amount of puppy food, veggies, pasta you name it! Along with this Ollie was getting countless vitamins. Basically he was growing too fast with his diet and as a result his legs were splayed and bowed at the front where most weight is distributed in a dog. This dog had countless operations to slow down his growth as a puppy by removing and shortening the bone and restructuring it. Cut out all dairy products and avoid foods with high protein levels. Switching to adult dog food is a possible idea to help your pup as levels of calcium and protein are usually less than what contents of nutrients are in puppy food. Cut out the vitamin c products also and supplement him with vitamin E which will help the muscle to form strong and assist his mobility. Cartrophen/carprofen may also be used in treatment and if your vet hasn't suggested this, then suggest it to him as it will greatly help with the pain. It truly is a great analgesic. Keep us posted on how your pup goes and good luck.

Unfortunately just adding new stronger blood from a stronger breed will not help the situation. this type of artificial selection is what has got dog breeds in trouble in the first place. In the natural world the strongest survive by a process of evolution and natural selection. This is where favourable traits are selected for to benefit the whole of the species group as a whole and not just as an individual entity. Many cowboy breeders don't understand genetics and breeding and mixing dogs is a very dangerous process. Perhaps it won't show now, but many generations down the line faults will show. I think its ludicrous when I hear all these new crossbreeding programmes that are going on with uneducated people toying with what should not be played with lightly.

hi there and welcome. Sorry that your Nikki is so ill. It sounds like she is accumulating fluid in her lungs, but you would be best to see your vet and get a proper diagnosis. Keep us posted on how she is.

whoo hoo House warming party at K's house! :multi: I'll just get the train over and be there in a few hours :P -
I would hazard a guess and say because the poodle is a widely known breed, very common and popular therefore easy to obtain. Secondly the standard poodle is the 2nd most "intelligent" breed which has been shown in social personality testing. Just as a side note: Basenjis, Schnauzers and Italian greyhounds do shed fur, only it is on a minimal basis compared to other breeds.

aha lovely example of a warble fly larvae. Glad that you managed to get the little bugger out. Poor Nikki having that stuck in him. -
The reason why they use poodles Crested is because they are aiming at the people who are allergic to fur. By having a dog that doesn't cast fur, they increase their profits as they can aim at a wider market.

Another example of plonkers  I was talking to a friend previously who is on the board of the KC and we arrived at talking about crossbreeds. I put it to her that the KC needed to intervene and she agreed. I threw a suggestion at her. What if people who have KC registered dogs participating in cross breed breeding purposefully have their KC status removed and therefore dogs will not be allowed to be shown. Its only a suggestion but it will be read at next months committee meeting which will be interesting.

Hi there, it sounds like it could be a deeply embedded tick. If you have some alcohol dab a little onto the tick and see if it moves or relaxes. If it does then its likely a tick and it should emerge slightly to get more oxygen. If you can get tweezers then squeeze it gentlyaround the head and see if you can remove it intactly. Good luck. -
mreh? :o

$880 for a dental???! :o Geeze unless your dogs are having major problems with pain when they chew/eat then I would go for a natural scaling at a veterinary surgery or do it yourself, if you have patient dogs with a coin. Dry salt on a slightly damp tissue rubbed around the teeth will also help to loosen tartar and will leave the teeth nice and shiny. I have to be honest and say .. I think you are being taken for a ride with this vet!

Poor little Sandy. Run free at the bridge

Thats excellent to hear that you and Pauly are getting results after hard work together. -
Its a tough call in situations like this but sometimes if the animal is in utter misery and the mange can't be brought quickly under control with the anaemia then it is sometimes kinder to let the animal be euthanased. I've seen dogs in horrid condition and they are just so miserable scratching constantly and its the right decision to put them to sleep.

lol i seen this on JD board and if only they were all so clever  :P

super pics and glad that you and the puppers had a nice time

Its a protective and defensive reaction and the dog can't be blamed for it. I sincerely hope that the thief doesn't get anything for damages, but so often these cases go that way. A GSD x in the borders of Ireland bit a burglar on farmland and the dog was euthanased... the guy got thousands for damage to his leg and arm
