A questio for those of you with older dogs...
imported_Kat replied to Taurus and Jada's topic in Everything about dogs
It could be early signs of arthritis perhaps or an underactive thyroid? It will be interesting to see what the vet says. My Golden girl Zoe is 13 years past in June and still as mad as a hatter but we noticed her slowing slightly about 2 years ago. She is still crazy and knows no boundaries to being old  -
Thanks for the heads up

Sounds like an eventful but successful day for you and Webby Nea. Is he a year old already!!! Time just realy flies. He has done you proud so far and will continue to do so as both you and him gather invaluable experience and better your already wonderful partnership

There is a critical time indeed usually up to 16 weeks of age, but that doesn't mean that a puppy will be a misbehaved rogue if he is not socialised after the critical window. Just take it gently with him with gradual introductions in your house and to strangers whn he is vaccinated and outside. One thing important is not to overwhelm him with lots of excessive cuddles. Let him come to you for the time being and don't let the kids grab him. When he does come to you use gentle praise with his name and treat him with something tasty. You will do just fine I'm sure and of course we will all be looking forward to seeing photos. If you need any advice at all, give any of us a shout here and we will only be too happy to help. :fadein:

I can remember the oldest dog that I seen at the surgery was a 25 year old Pekingese that was blind and deaf but still remarkable for her age :D

Does your dog respond to weird words?
imported_Kat replied to StarFox's topic in Everything about dogs
Zoe and Meg respond to hum nums which is probably the weirdest and basically means food/treats etc. Zoe also responds to "need do one" cos thats what shes asked before we take her out for a walk, and lucky puppy bone is another one cos she gets a winalot biscuit bone from Sainsburys when Mum goes shopping every week and she totally knows that when the shopping comes in, that she will get her lucky puppy bone. -
When I was ickle I showed a Rough Collie in junior handling and that rasting mutt crapped in the ring and me being only about 8 was devastated lol  With my Meg, our first show was pre-beginners obedience and I tugged her lead the whole way round the ring and lost most points while with heel free she only lost something like a quarter. I didn't know you shouldn't pull the lead until the judge told me afterwards  We still ended up 2nd in the class though cos the rest of the exercises were brill :D

Kongs with frozen yoghurt (I'm allergic to peanuts so the dogs don't get it :P ) is also a great way to keep gums cool and also a great thing to use on a hot day :D

Is this doggy ignorance thing becoming a major world-wide global problem? :-? There seem to more and more cases that we are hearing about!

yep most shelters have a written and signed agreement that if the dog is unwanted then it can't be sold on, and instead must be returned to the original shelter. Thats another reason why more and more shelters are micro-chipping their dogs so they can be easier tracked. It works the same way with bitches that can't be spayed for age/medical reasons and the new owners must abide by this agreement.

What a pathetic way to gain dogs from a rescue society that are doing their very best to rehome dogs and not making profit from doing so. This girl is such a fraudster

I love that programme but I only get to see it when I'm in the Netherlands!

For now just keep her totally on the lead even to go out to the garden to pee, and test her joints by massaging gently and noting any wincing. Hope she feels a bit better soon

Good to hear that shes still loving agility. Just a thought, but could she also have performed in a more relaxed happy manner because you were more relaxed with it not being a real competition? :)

errr where do I even start with Zoe  Zoe destroyed a whole table and 6 chairs by incessant chewing, 2 rooms of lino and a rather expensive Steiff teddy bear that was worth quite a few hundred. She got herself into trouble with stealing and chewing when she was 7 months old and jumped up on the table after dinner one friday night and stole a corn on the cob with the prongs still attached. With my Dads pocket significantly lighter she was a lucky puppy to have survived her operation... and still at the age of 13 years old, she still finds it great fun to steal and chew :o

Usually going out late at night would be the most craziest. When I had the horses I used to take Meg out for a ride with me at all hours into very early morning. It was pitch black always but we know the terrain and Meg had a wee flashy light on her collar as well as my horse having a flashy light on his girth so we could both see each other. Theres something magical about going out for a ride in the freezing cold dead of the morning at 4am
