I just cant help myself so I look at the different bully/power breeds (AmStaff, APBT, Staffy, AmBull, Neo, Cane Corso, Presa Canario, French Mastiff, etc.) on petfinder when Im bored. Well I found a purebred, CKC registered, unbelievably handsome, young APBT in Tyler which is only about an hour from here. He caught my eye unlike any other dog (except for the very few who are out of my reach, lol) and I want him so bad. Its killing me not having a dog... no, not just a dog, a pit bull. Ugh I want him so bad.
Oh I have to add I would never own a Chow Chow or a Cocker Spaniel. I have never meet a nice Chow or Cocker, everyone I have meet has tried to bite me or attack me.
Cocker Spaniels.. oh doG, my aunt had about three and every single one tried to bite me or did. I know it wasnt just my age either b/c her other dogs (or different breeds) never tried/did. ....Although, all my aunts dogs were from pet stores so that could be the reason.
I don't care for Dalmations, I know there are lovely, well mannered Dals but so far all the ones I have met have been a bit too snarky.
Better not let Corrie see that!

The most popular breed???
__crazy_canine__ replied to CincoandDahlilasgirl's topic in General questions
Same as pyrless, beagles and labs are really huge. Along with goldens and pugs! Pugs are REALLY big around here!!! Weimeraners are pretty big too and rotties are semi-popular. But I would have to say pits are the biggest unfortunately. Dallas, especially the West side, has a lot of fighting. Its so horrible. Uh, great danes and shepherds are pretty popular also... oh and boxers. Its mostly small mixes that I see around though... most likely poodle or bichon mixes since they have that curly fur. Chihuahuas and dachshunds are really big too. So overall I would say: 1. Labs (mostly BYB and mixes though...) 2. Pits (AmStaffs, ABPTs, Staffys, and pit mixes) 3. Small breeds (like shih tzus, chihuahuas, dachshunds, poodle mixes, etc.) 4. Pugs 5. Beagles 6. Shepherds (Germans, and other shepherd breeds along with lots of mixes) 7. Weimeraners 8. Great Danes 9. Boxers 10. Rottweilers -
Two chow/akita mix pups were at Straydog a while back... One was completely cat-like and almost, dare I say, aggressive The other was so sweet and licky an affectionate. Complete opposites. I love the Asian breeds honestly ..but I would probably never actually own one for the reasons goo said.

Well I have to say.... with pits my only problem is that of HF's, I want to have a multi-dog household also. But I am willing to work with the routine of switching out dogs between crates, kennels, and household. Plus, I plan on going into bully rescuse someday, even if its just fostering, and I will probably do that. I cant picture myself with any small dogs... they are just too much dog in not enough package  I dont know how else to put it. Plus theyre so fragile... Im afraid I would kill it by stepping on it or rolling over on it or something lol And poodles... I just I cant ...eh, sorry HF but I just cant stand poodles. BCs are too high energy, and its the same with most of the herding dogs. Hair was mentioned too.... I just couldnt handle a long-haired breed, no thanks. Shedders I can handle easier but I would prefer a breed that doesnt shed. Terriers I just canNOT handle, ugh! Pits are different though, they dont count to me!

Well I know we dont exactly get along but PUP, thats awful. Is there any specific reason behind this? What will he do if you cant find them homes? I would offer to take Shadow if my mom would allow it but she wont. I really hope things work out.

Geez Christmas this year really is bad luck! :( I enjoyed those pics SO much, thanx!!!! -
Go Tammy! 8) Think before you breed... we dont need any more dogs in the world, let alone pits. Dont get me wrong I love them but there are too many homeless ones that need thinking of before more of them are brought into the world. And thats me being nice about this, I could go off and I have before but it doesnt help any. Just please dont breed your dog!

Boonie and Dal need our prayers and thoughts
__crazy_canine__ replied to tx2478's topic in Everything about dogs
Aw it seemed like he was getting better, poor thing and poor DAL. He'll be in my thoughts along with your husbands. ((Is it just me or is just about everyone having a rough time right now???)) -
Mutts, thats an awful situation... eh, I hope the owners keep the dog inside too but lets be realistic, theyre only concerned about themselves NOT the dog so once they know theyre not under watch from the HS (or AC) out goes that poor puppy. Is there any way that the HS would be able to come over imediately when you call about your neighbors being gone and the pup outside? If no legal action is taken for that poor pup maybe you could get someone to donate shelter and the proper tie-out equipment for it? Well good luck... I really hope this pup gets taken away soon!

Multiple dog ownership isn't for everyone
__crazy_canine__ replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Everything about dogs
OMG HF!!! I really hope Peaches will unlearn this for her sake ad for your dogs' sakes. Its amazing how something can completely change a dog for the worse. :x I dont know what to say... this is just awful. Id love for her to stay with you but if you feel like your dogs are in danger then I think its best for her to go back to the rescue. :( -
PUP, whats the persons name? Im curious to know. Straydog does work with another rescuer but theyre helping the rescuer ot the other way around. So that doesnt help much.... Ill bring up the idea to one of the lead volunteers about maybe "joining forces" with another group.

Wow HF thats just awful things didnt work out. Im glad shes back with you since thats definitely whats best for her. Well hope things go smoothly with her back in your home. :D -
Eh well one thing I learned recently which I had no idea about is that they were fighting a lot before she died and were even going to get divorced a few times. This just isnt Bills passion like it was Pats. They were married right out of high school and dated since the were 13... thats a long time together. Exactly how much Im not sure but I think Pat died at age ...67? Maybe? Im not sure what else I can say about it because I am going to be kinda careful about privacy, like you said.

Oh and aother MAJOR thing is the dogs being returned so often. Its horrible! This is one thing we can work onn hopefully. Behavioral issues like chewing, selective hearing (lol), and the dogs not being potty trained are all major things that keep these dogs from staying in a home. Weve thought about requiring people to sign up for training classes with their dogs, what do you think? Training I work on at Adoption Days but once a week for four hours doesnt help.

I cant go into great details about this whole thing just because I dont want anybody to say anything bad about this shelter but... Im very disappointed in the way things are going. Bill the founders husband was left in charge of the shelter when Pat died and has been trying to keep things the way she would want them to be. Shes always said basically my way or the high way when volunteers tried to help out but to her it was trying to tae over I guess. Anyway, these dogs get fed a diet with no meat at all. I mean I know dogs can do that but... still, I think dogs should have meat. Can that cause a dog to be underweight at all? Or have affects on how fast an underweight dog gains weight back? Because so many of these dogs are thin but I know theyre fed twice, sometimes even three times a day. Another thing is ticks. Supposedly it was only this year that theyve had a real problem with them but there was a point when every dog had at least 5 ticks ranging all the way up to 50! It was so pitiful... one dog even died (not from this) and had one of the tick diseases. The big issue though (because the food thing wasnt that important) is getting these dogs adopted out, or what will happen to these dogs if something ever happened to Bill. Pat never worried about anything happening to her and a volunteer said when he tried taling to her about it she yelled saying nothing was going to happen! ...and guess what? Months later she passed away. Several volunteers have tried to arange and even pay for the moving (and staying fees) of these dogs to other shelters but Pat refused and now Bill refuses. And Erin, poor Erin. She is the daughter of them and has felt obligated to help out unlike all the rest of their children. She talks with the volunteers trying to work out things between them and her dad while trying to manage her own life with her husband who thinks shes crazy to even try. Its all so depressing but even after hearing most of this you guys wouldnt understand because theres so much to explain. So so much to explain! So now the volunteers are trying to cope with the fact that they cant improve Straydog and its adoption rate (which by the way, we've only adopted out about 30 dogs this year) or help Straydog to not keep getting too many dogs at the shelter. *sigh* I wish there was something I can do. I have thought about talking with Bill since he resects me a lot and see if I can try to get him to see the volunteers point of view and how we could wor out a better way for dogs to be adopted. Im so confused as to what to do though... I want to help but it feels like because Bill is so set in his ways theres only so much I can do...

I volunteer for a no kill dog shelter that has Adoption Days in my city on Saturdays. Basically I talk with people who may or may not be interested in a dog/dogs. If Im not too busy with a dog, I have to talk to people a lot which isnt one of my strong points so I tend to keep a dog the whole time. When I have a dog theres theres a long list of things I have to do... -clean up after them first of all (not fun lol) -walk them every hour or so just to be extra sure of no accidents inside -work on training (which isnt necessary but I feel it is) -lastly and most importantly, you have to keep the dog under control when its inside the store! I cant tell you how unprofessional it looks when a dog is hyper, doesnt listen, etc. The basic routine Ive gotten into when going to PetsMart is setting up everything that we need, which would be the table for all our information, crates, pens, water bowls, toys, and just overall organizing the area. Then we bring the dogs in. I have to say though Im very disappointed from volunteering... this shelter makes me so despressed with everything Ive heard and witnessed about it. Eh, in fact, I think Ill make a new topic about it and see if I can get some suggestions or even just support.

:o Geez thats so creepy!!! I just dont get people! Of all the beings, humans are by far the most unusual!
I never never never encourage people to buy pit bulls... Unless of course they have really done their research... I cringe everytime I hear someone say "My friend just got a pit puppy..." I just know that I am not going to want to hear the rest... :-?
Oh I know!!! :o  God, I hate the fact that pits are like this fad to people. In school every once in a while I hear people say something about pits and Im not sure what to think... One part of me is happy they like them but the other is like, well, I wonder if they just like their "tough" look/reputation or something. I know there are plenty of people in my school who own pits and maybe even fight them. My friend who used to live in Miami used to bet in dog fights and told me he saw a few die before but said, "hey its good money!" Damn him...

Some breeds just arent for certain people. With misleading information, anyone can think theyre getting what theyre not. Theres one person, another volunteer, who got a dog adopted out saying how wonderful he was... yeah, well, he wasnt/isnt and now they brought him back as an adult with many, many behavioral issues. They let him chew on people when he was a pup and now is full grown (and HUGE!) and still bites people. Now dont get me wrong he doesnt bite seriously... its just like what a lot of rotties do, they put their mouth on you but dont bite down very hard, just mouthing kinda. Anyway my point is this dog was a chow mix and some of the things he was doing was part of his breed traits that they shouldve been informed about and not just have been told how "great" he was. I know people want to get others to like their breed, like me and pits, but just saying the half-truth isnt doing them any good.

Got this in an email...
RECORD SENTENCE FOR DOGFIGHTING MASTERMIND On Monday (11/22), convicted South Carolina dogfighting mastermind David Tant was handed the strictest sentence ever given for dogfighting: thirty years in prison. Circuit Judge Wyatt Saunders pronounced the sentence after Tant pleaded guilty to 41 counts of dogfighting, following a raid on Tant's property last April in which investigators seized dogfigh ting paraphernalia and 47 pit bulls. The raid came after a surveyor was shot and injured by a booby-trapped gun on the property. For that offense, Tant was convicted of assault and battery and received ten years in addition to his 30 for dogfighting. Tant's conviction marks a major victory in the fight against illegal, organized dogfighting. David Tant has long been associated with dogfighting groups and is well-known as one of the biggest breeders of fighting dogs in the world, selling dogs nationally and internationally. Said South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster, who prosecuted the case under his newly-created, statewide, dogfighting task force, "This sends a message to dog fighters and people who would participate in this vicious, brutal activity that there are consequences for their actions." =============================================================== Dog fighting moving from urban to rural November 24, 2004 By WALLACE McBRIDE Index-Jour nal senior staff writer Over the last few years, organizers of underground dog fights have been slowly relocating matches away from the light of big cities. While this is good news for South Carolina's scattered urban areas, rural parts of the state could soon be dealing with an influx of people looking to find new arenas for illegal bloodsports - bringing with them crimes peripheral to underground dog fighting. Charleston veterinarian Robert Carlson evaluated dozens of pit bulls confiscated in April from David Tant, believed to be the nation's No. 2 breeder and trainer of fighting pit bulls. While the coast has no monopoly on illegal animal fights, those who operated there have steadily been forced to find less-visible arenas, Carlson said. "There aren't really too many places to have a fight in Charleston anymore," he said. It's a similar story in Greenwood and the Lakelands, said Greenwood Police Chief Gerald Brooks. "It's a little more difficult to do dog fighting here inside the city because of the density of the population," Brooks said. "But it has happened. We have made several arrests in the last several years and have confiscated some dogs in the process." These arrests have involved people who were both breeding and training dogs for fights, he said, but charges have been sparse - only three or four cases made in as many years. Animal shelters are often a first stop for people looking to get into dogfighting sport, said Karen Pettay, executive director of the Humane Society of Greenwood. "People come in looking for `pits,' but when they find out pets have to be spayed or neutered before they leave our facility they immediately lose interest," Pettay said. Pit bulls are not naturally prone to violence, but the subculture of animal fighting is not only beginning to corrupt the animal's image, but it's bloodline as well. Carlson said pit bulls, even those trained for violent bloodsport, are still affection ate toward people. "They just don't like other dogs," he said. "But I've never seen any pit bulls like those in Charleston." Because of demand for descendants of Tant's past champion fighters, his dogs had become intensely inbred. Workers at the shelter were forced to deal with dangerous dogs that seemed to have no need for interaction with any other animal - human or otherwise. "It's a horrible business of using animals as objects," Pettay said. "Pit bulls are some of the sweetest animals you'll ever meet and they turn them into killing machines - it's ruining the breed." The S.C. Attorney General's Office has formed a task force to handle dogfighting cases, and has found fighters operating on three basic levels in the state. "You've got the top professional level, who breed dogs and fight dogs and make money on it," said William Frick, a state prosecutor. "You've got an intermediate level with people who have several dogs and would like to advance to the prof essional level one day. And then you've got the low-level street people and street fighting - people who get a dog for a status symbol." Some street-level dogfighters are in it for prestige, Carlson said, but most who participate do so for profit. Often the most brutal matches have the highest payoff. "The rules can be set at the beginning of the fight, and can be variable on the scope of the fight," Carlson said. "There are fights that can be terminated after one dog turns, or you can have fights that are terminated when a dog is dead. The last thing of any importance is the dog. It's all about the money." Frick said the state's effort to prosecute dogfighting is part of a broader effort to remedy the state's "culture of violence." The activity is usually at the center of other crimes, such as drug dealing, domestic violence and gambling, he said. Pit bulls that find their way to the county animal shelter often bear the subculture's grim fashions, Pettay said . "Even if the person is not using the dog for fights, you know it's still a status thing," she said. "You see them with their ears cropped off - the less the other dogs can grab the better, which is why they shave the ears off." "Whether it's game fighting or dogfighting, you have the gambling aspect and the alcohol aspect, and you have the drug aspect - it all runs together," said Greenwood County Sheriff-elect Dan Wideman. "We don't want that in our community." Monday, the state struck its first major blow against dogfighting when Tant was sentenced to 30 years in prison for multiple counts of criminal animal fighting, and for creating a booby trap that injured a railroad surveyor on his property. "Not enough states catch enough people to really send a message," Carlson said. "Most of the guys get away. It's so well organized and so hard to catch in the act." ============================================================== Wallace McBride covers Greenwood and g eneral assignments in the Lakelands.
