Noah, if you don't know who these people are, how did they know who you were? They must have known in order to report it to animal control. I'm just curious because that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

No, it's a new one

It is "Culture Shock" week on National Geographic and they are showing documentaries about different cultures. If you see a show on called Taboo: Food , be forewarned that there is a brutal dog killing in this show. They played that episode twice today so I wouldn't be surprised if they show it again. The dog killing is part of a sacrafice held every 4 years in an African Village. But it is extremely graphic and I almost didn't make it through it. I just thought I'd warn you guys just in case. They don't really warn you about it in the show. It's one of the most graphic things I've ever seen though. :(

My only idea is to beg. She's going to have to go over there, apologize for anything and everything and try to convince them to drop their complaint. These people sound like they are completely ticked off and unresonable so talking to them rationally is not going to work. I know it's not a nobel thing but seriously, if she wants to avoid a legal battle her only recourse probably is to grovel. It's going to suck and she'll hate doing it, but I really think that short of a legal fight, it's the only thing that is going to work. Maybe she could make a deal that her dog will never again be offleash around theirs. If she sees her neighbor at the dog park, she could agree to leave right away. She could also move out of the city to an area where those people won't see her ever. The noble thing to do is get a lawyer and fight it, but sometimes that's not practical. I would at least try begging. A written apology would go far too. Oh but I don't think she should admit anything in writing.

RIP HOLLY! my pride and joy has left this world. *cry*
kendalyn replied to Holz_Boomer's topic in Everything about dogs
Oh wow, I'm so sorry! That's awful. I'm sure Holly knew how much you loved her. And I'm sure she loved you the same Boomer needs to grieve just like you do. At least he still has you. I bet he's greatful for your presence while he is missing Holly. Rest in Peace Holly  -
Should I do it by basically starting over and teaching him like I did the first time, only using a German command? Is there a better way to do it?

Thanks for the links! They were perfect :-) It's siitz for sit (that's not too much of a stretch) Platz for down (as in laydown) That's easy to remember. It sounds like of like plop  I didn't see shake. I'll have to check around for that one. It's a good thing one of them had pronounciations because I don't want to say it wrong and then have it not work when she says it
he isn't confused at all with his commands in either language
Oh Good! I really don't want to confuse him. I hope he does alright with it.

I've never heard of it so I don't know. sorry!

This seems to be a common misconception of some people who come here. It's not the dog itself that people here object to, it is the way the dog was brought into this world. The VAST majority of mutts are a result of people not "fixing" their animals and then either letting them become pregnant on purpose so they can have a litter of puppies, or letting them run amok to procreate unchecked. This is completely irresponsible on the part of the owners and should not happen. While the puppies that result from this irresponsiblity may be awesome animals that make great pets, the fact remains that currently there are WAY too many dogs out there. For someone to be contributing to the population for no good reason is ludicrous. And yes, the fad mixed breeds are created almost completely by backyard breeders and puppy mills. I think the impetus behind backyard breeders is not always money, but it can be. IMO most BYBs are people who think puppies are cute, love their dog and want it to have puppies. Some of them are money hungry and sell puppies at ridiculous prices from dogs who probably should not even be breeding. Puppy mills care about money only. There is no other reason they exist. If you believe this to be otherwise, I'll need proof. Let me say again that probably NO ONE here objects to a mutt. We are dog lovers. How could we call ourselves that if we didn't like mutts? It is the people who allow dogs to breed uncontrollably and irresponsibily that we are against. Under what circumstances do you think breeding a dog or allowing a dog to remain intact is OK?

You were right. If you thought letting her off the leash would put her in danger than you were right to keep her on. She might not have jumped but she might have. And at your friends house she's in unfamiliar territory which could make it more difficult to get her back. Congratulations on your A+ :D

I answered my own question! Look what I found! It's a saddlebag for your flexi leash :-) Awesome, I'll have to look into getting one of those. Maybe I'll get both...

Do you guys have this problem when it's warm out? It's a nice day, you get in the car and take the dog to a nice place for a long walk. But you get there and then realize that there is nowhere to put the car keys, cash or credit/debit cards, cell phone, and poop bags unless they are all crammed into the pockets of your shorts. And that looks and feels all lumpy. Or I can put it in a backpack, but that makes me hot sometimes so I don't like to do that. I always have this problem. I found this leash though that fixes it! :D I'm going to miss the flexi leash this summer, but it will be nice to have a place to put my stuff :-) Maybe they make something like this in a flexi... I'll have to look... Anyway, I've never seen this before and I thought I'd share in case anyone else is like me! Does anybody know some commands in German? I'm going to be living with a German Exchange student this summer and I thought it would be nice to teach Buck how to sit, laydown, etc... in German :) I would go look on google or something but I'm afraid I wouldn't get the right form of the word or something. I don't want to teach Buck the wrong form. Do you think teaching him the german commands will confuse him? He's got sit, laydown, shake down cold. He knows more than that but I thought I would stick with Sit, Down and Shake. I could do Leave It too but I'd rather not. If it confuses him learning both words, I won't do it though. Does anyone else have their dogs recognize two different languages for the same command?

I would agree with aborting the kittens. Cats and dogs are very different from humans. I do not approve of abortion in people. It's a life as soon as the cells start multiplying in my opinion.

 They know you're holding out on them!
p,s, - the old signature said "Some people are like Slinkies....basically useless, but it's still fun to watch them tumble down the stairs...." someone got offended...thought it was directed at them....
I don't know what is funnier! That quote or that somebody thought they were useless and then got offended!

As long as you keep the rides fairly short and in line with his usual excerise length and intensity I think it would be fine. I bet he loves it :-)

Once in a while someone says something snotty about Buck after I tell them he's a mutt. (They usually assume he's a purebred lab) They'll say something like, "Too bad." or "Why didn't you just get the real thing?" It's annoying. Especially since anyone who thinks Buck is a lab knows nothing about dogs. He only weighs about 50 pounds  I usually don't say anything back but once I did because the guy was so mean. He said "a mutt isn't worth the food you feed him". :x I told him if that's how he feels then his kids should be starving. I really don't know if that even makes a lot of sense but I was pissed!

In high school I had a friend who owned a Corgi/Golden mix. He looked just like a Golden but with really short legs. He was cute :-)

I think Gigi is cute for a little poodle :-) So is Lola or Hima. Those are both pretty girly Agatha is cool too. You can call her Aggie for short.

Awesome! How exciting for you and Montie :-)

Laurel's going to see her rescuers tomorrow....
kendalyn replied to courtnek's topic in Dogs in need
Good luck! I'm sure Laurel will do wonderfully :-) -
A dog's eye will tear up just like ours do to wash away debris and to keep the eye protected from scratches. So in that sense they do "cry". Something may have been irritating his eye and he was producing more tears then normal to wash it away. Just keep an eye on him :-) hehe

No, it's not ok. You just summed up the reasons why a lot of people I regard as Backyard Breeders breed their dog (some people might not consider it backyard breeding but I do) I'm sure your dog is wonderful and I don't doubt that you love her and it will be hard to lose her, but it's just not right. There are too many dogs who need homes to be breeding one simply because you really want to. Another reason you shouldn't breed her is because you probably don't know enough about genetics to do it right. Do you know her pedigree? You should in order to avoid any genetic problems. You also need to know how to read the pedigree of a stud dog. What if she had a litter that ends up with genetic problems and people bring their dog back to you because they can't afford the vet care? Could you afford to take care of it and get it whatever medical help it needs? If you were to breed your dog, you would be obligated to do this. No, it sounds like a bad idea to me. Enjoy your dog and be thankful you have her :-) Show her how much you love her by getting her spayed :P

What state is she in? I would look into puppy lemon laws and bringing legal action against the pet store. Each state is different though. Some have these laws and some don't. And of course the laws vary state by state. How bad is it going to get? Could she hold off until she can save up some money? Or maybe the vet will let her make a down payment and then additional payments after the surgery.
