There is a pet cemetary here. It seems nice but I would never bury one of my animals there. All my pets are buried in the backyard. I guess if I couldn't do that though I would go with cremation.

I vote not to ban Rott 'n' Pit. Why would we be banning him? To look good to other forums? To send him a message that he is not believed and not liked? I think he can figure that out by reading the threads. I guess I don't want to close the door to seeing him offer an explanation. I doubt I would believe it but I guess morbid curiosity has me interested.
-
Rott 'n' Pitt's silence says more than he ever could. It wouldn't make much of a difference anyway because it's not like he's going to come here and fess up. I think it's fairly obvious that he is not being scammed.

 This is really too much.

stupid new neighbors let her dog poop in my yard!!
kendalyn replied to a topic in Everything about dogs
DAL, have you gone around to say hello to your neighbors yet? They may not even know someone is living at your house and go walking through the yard thinking it's empty. Plus, if you go around just to say hello, they'll be more aware of you and will have a harder time being rude. :-) -
He is very unique looking :-) What a cutie! Let us know how it goes

Wow that's really good Courtnek! Excellent poem :-) Thanks for posting it!

I hope he likes her to! I mean, I'm sure he'll like her, but I know he's not positive about having a dog right now. He's been kind of waffling. At least she's not a puppy, and the ASPCA lady said they think she's housetrained. Those are two bonuses. I don't get to see Scott until this weekend so I'll show him her petfinder page then! :-)
H*ll, if I didn't wear one to bed, my hoohahs would hit the floor every time I bent over in my decrepit state
 I guess I'm not looking forward to getting older! ehh, I guess I'll just let 'em drag...
I say get her, she's cute!
She is cute! A guy in the store was commenting that he thought she was a purebred lab and the ASPCA lady said she might be. There is no way she is but I didn't say anything. Well, I'll show Scott her petfinder page tonight when I see him. Maybe he'll be interested. He needs a dog I say!

Excellent article! :D

At least I know I'm not alone! Looks like this is a very common thing  Our dogs are just all nuts!
Lay down on the floor?????? NOOOOOOO WAY to dangerous
He does get quite rowdy! He stepped on my face once and it hurt like the dickens
Your dog sounds lovely and must have received alot of positive experiences in life
Thanks doggylover! (BTW, why don't you join? :) ) I found him starving in the woods while I was in Kentucky on vacation. I took him home and he's been the best dog ever! I guess we both found a good thing...

No, it was high and tight. Not really really tight but tight enough that the prongs were probably touching her skin at least a little most of the time.
Prong collars can and should be left on for the duration of a day so the dog doesn't become "collar smart"
ohhhh, OK, that makes sense. I didn't like the idea of her wearing it in the kennel. She's supposed to be able to relax in there! (I know that's not the real reason for no prong while she's in the kennel!) To me, wearing the prong while in the kennel is like me going to bed with a bra on...

I was killing time at the pet store today and I looked at a dog there :-) She's a rescue from the Kalamazoo ASPCA. Here's her petfinder link: http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=2893489&adTarget=468petsgeneral&SessionID=40ac221127888385-app1&display=&preview=1&row=25&tmpl=&stat= I kind of fell in love with her  I know I shouldn't have even looked but I did. And I took her for a walk. DOH! It's dumb because I can't have another dog right now! But I was thinking maybe my boyfriend Scott would be interested. He has a cat (they said she's ok with cats though) and a pretty big yard and no dog! It would be really fun to take her and Buck out to do stuff together. :-) Anyway, they had a prong collar on her while she was in her kennel which I thought was weird. I don't know much about prongs but I thought they were for training only. I asked the lady why she had it on and she said because they're trying to teach her not to pull on the leash. Isn't it hard to pull while she's in the kennell? They wanted the leash connected to it while I walked her. I didn't feel comfortable since I don't know how to use a prong, so I just kept up with her so the leash stayed slack. :-? She pulled like crazy otherwise (and choked and coughed and hacked). Apparently their method isn't working. I'm glad the ASPCA rescues animals, but it would be nice if they had some more knowledgable people working at the pet store. Am I right? Prong collars aren't supposed to be left on all the time are they? I could be wrong here... I've never used one. So we'll see. Hopefully Scott will like the idea :-) I think I'll e-mail the people at the ASPCA about the prong thing though. As soon as someone tells me if I'm right or not that is. I don't want to look stupid!

I would inform the police or animal control only. If he has a home, his owners will most certainly check those places. I personally wouldn't knock myself out though. If you think you want to keep this dog, than go for it! But of course it's totally understandable if you can't do it. You're already got quite a houseful. Do you have any friends that might be interested?
-
You say Jake is barking at your for attention. What do you do when he is barking? Do you pay attention to him? If so, you might want to stop and see if the behavior extinguishes itself. Or maybe wait until he has stopped barking and then give him what he wants. You could teach him a "quiet" command also.

I finally have to ask. I'm just too curious and I'm hoping someone has an idea. Whenever I lay down on the floor Buck goes nuts! He is so happy! It's like he just won the lottery. And he shows his joy by trying to burrow under me. It's the weirdest thing. Here's how it goes: 1. I lay down on the floor 2. Buck rushes over to me and sniffs my head like a mad man 3. Buck licks my head 4. He starts pushing his head under my body 5. I tell him for goodness sake to lay down! And he does. Does anybody elses dog do this? If I let him, Buck will try to burrow under me until he finally succeeds. As soon as part of my body is completely on top of him (a leg or an arm or something), he calms down and lays there. If I move my leg or whatever was on top of him, he does it again. And the next thing is just a weird Buck thing. He will bravely and selflessly defend the yard from all manner of blowing plastic bag or spooky wind, but has no problem with several strange men reaching into my car to pet him at the gas station while I'm inside. I pop in to get a gallon of milk and these 3 dudes on motorcycles said he was whining and crying for some attention. It was nice of them to keep him company I suppose. What a baby! So yeah, if anyone knows why he goes so nuts about me on the floor, I'd love to know!

What are the advantages of desexing male dogs?
kendalyn replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
Kendalyn, you say as long as his obedience skills are good... will they be as good if he is not nuetered?
I don't see why not. Of course you'll have to keep a much closer watch on him if he is off leash, but hopefully anyone with a bitch in heat would be smart enough to keep her at home or on a leash also. I can't believe that unneutered dogs are really that harder to control than a neutered dog. It's all about training and bonding in my opinion. I want to let you know though that I've never personally had an intact dog. This is just coming from what I've read and what seems logical to me. The breeder would be able to give you a very experienced explanation I'm sure :-)
What does that have to do with whether the dog is neutered or not. If the neutered dog is the best looking and well bred what do they care if his little boys are cut off or not. If someone is not planning to breed thier dog one way or another there won't be puppies anyway so why would they care about that.
I completely agree. It shouldn't all be about breeding. If the dog is the best, he/she is the best, intact or not. -
I would not treat him everytime he does something right. Praise should be enough to make him happy and realize he's done a good thing. When I train Buck on things he knows well and we're just practicing, I only treat about 10% of the time. The other 90% he gets a "good boy" and a pat on the head and he's happy. If he's just learning something I treat 100% of the time when he gets it right and then gradually back off. I think you're right to be concerned about Web being totally treat motivated. To me there is nothing more annoying than a dog holding out on a command for a treat. But I don't know if you can continue clicker training if you want to wean him off treats everytime. I don't know a whole lot about clicker training though. All I know is that you're supposed to give a treat everytime you click. I guess you could just not click when he's done something right though. Maybe replace the click with praise and a tummy rub? Oh, and I wanted to add that sometimes I don't praise Buck at all when he does a command right. If I'm asking him to sit and stay while I answer the door I may or may not praise him when it's time for him to get up again. It depends on how busy I am. So don't feel bad if you don't praise him all the time. He'll be fine :-)

My Standard Poodle had bad Pneumonia, was on the way to recovery and suddenly stopped eating. He died while the vets were trying to figure out what was wrong. He was 10 though so it's possible it was just "his time." But I'm telling you this because it was startling to me how quickly he went downhill after he stopped eating. If your vet can't help you, GO FIND ANOTHER ONE NOW! You really don't have time to dink around if he's not eating. I would make another appointment with your vet and be very blunt. Ask for a referral to another vet or to a specialist if you doubt in any way your vet's ability to handle this case. Let us know what happens.
-
It depends on you I guess. What does he want from you? Would he require that Asim come live with him? Most likely this will be a big financial and time commitment from you if you are the one to be doing all the showing and what not.
-
They're pretty popular in large cities. I know someone who uses one for her dog and it works well. It's pretty much the same thing as a cat. You have to clean it every day.

Buck would be Noodle because I call him noodle a lot. He's my little noodle! I call him Sweetie a lot too but I couldn't name a dog sweetie. Especially a boy :P

What are the advantages of desexing male dogs?
kendalyn replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
will he be more likely to run away if let off lead at a park? Can he be trusted at all if he's not neutered?
As long as his obedience skills are good, he'll be fine. Neutering is a good thing for pets, but it isn't something you should feel compelled to do right away if you're thinking about showing (and you're responsible). It has it's advantages and should be done is most cases, but it's not like an unneutered dog is going to be a holy terror that you can't control :-) The idea that neutered dogs get reproductive cancers (except for testicular cancer obviously  ) less often than unneutered dogs may or may not be true. From what I've read, I would say it's not accurate. Although I can find just as many sources that say it is true as those that say it isn't, the more credible onces seem to be saying that there has been no real research to back that up. Here are a couple that say it isn't: http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenlclub/breedvet/neutr.html http://www.neutersol.com/Neutering%20Myths%20and%20New%20Realities.htm -

Very cute pup! I've never had a dog that small, but sometimes I think it would be fun :-) -

You don't have to decide right now, or even right when you get the puppy. I prefer not to neuter until the dog is around 10 months or so anyway. I think a lot of shows have puppy classes so you can both get your feet wet there and see if you think it might be something you want to commit to doing :-) Are you still looking at a Whippet?
