There are a ton of good books out there. Go to your library and check out the books on dog training. Most of them will give up a pretty good idea of what to do for basic commands. The bookstore will have an even better selection. If you want to learn more about dog behavior read, "Don't Shoot the Dog" by Karen Pryor. I like it a lot.

Yay :-) I'm glad to hear it worked out!

I taught Buck a fast down by asking him to laydown, treating him very quickly and then saying "OK!" really excitedly and having him jump up. Then we'd do it over and over. It was a big game. Up, down, up, down, etc... By the time we're down with it we're all the way across the yard. :-) If you say Down and she doesn't lay down, just reposition her and give her the command again. I don't really buy the whole, "don't give a command twice" thing because you can't stand around forever waiting for the dog to go down. Plus, if you wait too long, the dog will forget you even gave the command. Either say down and then enforce it (make her lay down) or try having her walk a few steps with you and then turn around and do it again.

Sounds like a great time :-) It's awesome you found such a good match for Freebee!

We've kind of been through this before. If you want to read the thread, look here: http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=11397&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 And SRC said she is no longer going to be doing any breeding of her dogs  That's why she is looking for a rescue.

It doesn't sound like an emergency. I would stop using so much of the cleaner and wait a few days to see if it clears up. Unless her condition worsens or changes.

well, you can call animal control since she is probably breaking a law by letting her dog wander into your yard, but I guarantee you'll have a bad neighbor situation on your hands if you do that. It's your call on that one though. I've heard sprinkling pepper around the perimeter of your yard will deter dogs from coming in (and leaving) but I've never tried it. I don't know how effective it really is.

To the vet, to the vet, to the vet, vet vet!

Food/possssion agression or a problem with alpha status?

I do agree that some dogs are better being outdoors. You'll have to work harder though at getting these problem sorted out. I really think you need a professional though. -
point well taken BK and K :)

This is my favorite kind of crate. Buck has one and he loves to lie down in his during the day. I prefer it to the wire ones because it's more "den like" and cozy. You'll need to put something soft in the bottom though. I can't imagine it would be very comfortable laying on the hard plastic bottom.
I am not sure its really a case of "this discussion isnt going the way I would like"
I didn't mean how you felt personally K, I meant that when someone asks for a thread to be locked, that is what they are in effect saying. I'll have to agree to disagree on the locking the thread thing because I think any reason for doing it can always be countered with telling someone to just stop reading any discussion that is bothering them. I would agree with locking the threads on request from Rott 'n' Pit though.

You're going to be a very busy guy soon! He's a cutie :-)
-
Oh that's so cool! Good luck in whatever you decide to do :-) I hope the little hound starts feeling better. Have you named them at all?
-
Well.. yes and no :-) Locking a thread in effect says, "This discussion isn't going the way I would like, so now nobody else can discuss it." It's the internet version of a little kid saying, "I'm taking my ball and going home." It stifles anybody elses opportunity to voice their opinion on the subject (even Rott'n'Pits). So that's where I really have a big problem with it. There have been discussions on here that I have found extremely disturbing and knowing a fight or even further discussion would go no where, I simply stopped reading it. I would never want to take away someone else's ability to discuss something only because it is bothering me. I think it's very interesting that Rott 'n' Pit to my knowledge never asked for any of the threads about him to be locked.

Food/possssion agression or a problem with alpha status?
She is extremely hyperactive so she cannot ever come inside.
She may need more exercise also. Why not change her walk to a run alongside your bike or something? It would be good if you could convert her to being an inside dog. You will have much more of a bond and will be able to control resources more effectively. -
Can someone please explain the rationale behind locking threads to me? It seems easy enough to just not read a thread that is bothering you. I guess I've never been one for censorship.
the prices I got quoted were ranging from $300-380
:o Woah! I got curious and called my vet to ask what it would be for a 7 year old 100 lb Akita. They told me about $130! BUT I'm willing to bet your vet is better than my vet. I like my vet, but after what happened with Kody, if Buck ever gets sick, I'm taking him somewhere else. I only trust them with routine stuff.
-
A little over a hundred and that included the overnight stay, pre-op labwork, and the rest. Buck's a boy though. I think females usually cost a little more. 130 would seem about right if it included the overnight stay, lab work and the rest.
-
You could teach him to play dead :-) When I point my finger like a gun and say "Bang", Buck falls over on his back and sticks his legs up. It's really cute :P

Someone posted this a little while ago. It's a joke. There's no such place as Dog Island :-)
-
Working on his recall would probably help too. That way you can call him back reliably also. That's probably important to doing disc dogs also :-)
Although I see their point about why show dogs shouldn't be neutered
What is the point? I understand the breeding thing, but who cares if someone is just showing for fun and has no plans to breed. Why not allow them to go ahead and fix their dog?
-
I think pretty much all of us know that in order to show your dog, most organizations require that they remain intact to do it. This is something I don't understand. Why do they have to be intact? Can't a dog be show quality even if it doesn't have all it's "equipment"? I understand some people don't like neutering too young in case it stunts the dog's growth, but even if they did it later on I think it would be a big improvement. I would really like to see at least the AKC remove this requirement. I hear quite a few people say that their dog has not been neutered because they "were hoping to show him/her someday". I think a lot of people say this, but never really get around to doing it and then also neglect to ever have their dog fixed. And then uh-oh, Fluffy is pregnant! BTW, I don't mean that they should require the dogs to be altered, just that they allow altered dogs to be shown. What do you guys think? And does anyone know why it is required that show dogs remain intact?

The only thing I've ever found that is effective with black flies is covering up the skin. I go backpacking in the boundary waters every so often and the black flies up there are pretty brutal and fly spray won't even slow them down (we don't use it anyway because it eats through tent fabric) Maybe you could make him a light jacket for when the flies are a problem?
