7.
I cant forget the time my son (at about 6) asked why girls dont have "thingies" (apparently he had seen a girl using the bathroom. (wasnt supposed to, wandered in) and I explained, but theypick stuff up we would never imagine!!
 courtnek, that cracked me up and reminded me of my own son and daughter when they were a bit younger....... My son said he was better than she was and I said Why would you say that ? And he said "Because she doesn't have one of these, she lost it" :o Imagine explaining that !!!  Divine, I was thinking the same thing......I'm surprised the teacher didn't screech and tear the kids back into the classroom !!!  Hmmmm ~ That is a wonderful thing you're doing showing the kids different breeds of dogs, will you be going back with more ??
  8. R2, That's the great thing about this site :D !! Everyone can voice their own opinon without being scorched for it !! (hopefully...) I really think that no one thought that the man deserved to be bit, and was only doing what came on instinct (lifting dog up) Accidents do happen with equipment, but we all have to be responsible dog owners and handle what may come our way. P.S....love that scusa emoticon !!
  9.

ok so let's say joe schmoe shih tzu owner is walking down the street. he has taken no precaution (direct stop, big stick, treats) in case of a meeting with a strange and aggressive dog.
Do you generally take precautions and cary a big stick when you walk your dog?
I agree with Dog Paddle. You can't blame Joe Schmoe Shih Tzu owner for the attack. If I can find fault in this case it would be that the pit owner didn't have full control of her dogs. You must always have full control. I know accidents happen but then you have to be ready for the consequences. I think they are harsh in this case and most likely wouldn't be so harsh if it were another breed of dog. But still you must have control.
I totally agree with the both of you....... I don't usually think about going out with my dogs for walks armed to the teeth....... that just really upsets me that the Shih Tzu owner is being "blamed". I have two Jacks and I know that small dogs are not necessarily the most popular on this site, but I don't think I should have to arm myself when I go for walks.......just because some irresponisble dog owner can't control their dogs. I certainly make sure my dogs are under control at all times. I also own a rather large Lab/Rott, and I walk her separately from the Jacks just because she's so strong. "I" know my limitations.
  10.

Could you imagine the punishment if it had been 123 counts of child abuse???
the way the legal justice system works, it may have been the same outcome. They take kids away from "abusive, drug addicted, mentally unbalanced" people all the time. Then they give them back, after the parent has taken a 6 hour course on child rearing....and some psychiatrist who works for the county pronounces them "fit"....parents like this are allowed, ENCOURAGED!!! to try to get their kids back from foster homes, where the kid has settled in and is happy. It's a travesty of justice. It's NO justice at all, for the child
Court, you're so right......children are given back every day to their abusers only to die at their hands  ........and I'm sure they were probably animal abusers as well. :-? We need to have stricter laws and harsher sentences for the abusers of animals, children, and the elderly. Mouse, you're right...at the very least this woman should've been banned for life of ever owning an animal again !!! Not even a goldfish.......
  11. :o Those Peta people are crack pots !!!
  12. Those were my exact thoughts Amber......when I read that the Mom had hit and kicked that dog just recently  (probably has done it the entire dogs life...) my thought was the dog must be in pain...... Loka pup, sorry for your injuries, they sound very painful. :( These people shouldn't be allowed to own a Pet Rock !! :x
  13. :o Hey, how did b.K's reply get above the original post ????? :o b.k is right about the fasting.....my Vet told me no food or water after midnight (night before op) She'll be fine !!
  14. Mouse, got a real chuckle out of envisioning everything !!! Sounds like a real fun time !! :D
  15. :o What a Jack Ass !! I guess he probably liked being the center of everyones attention !! I was always under the impression that taking your dog into a Pet Store was a privlege and I always make sure mine go "potty" first before we go in....... What a dork for letting his dog pee all over everything !!! :-?
  16. I really wish it would be illegal to sell animals such as dogs/cats in Pet Stores and on-line.......... :( Maybe, just maybe then, breeders would stop breeding so many dogs/cats........if they didn't have so many avenues to sell them in. :-? Of course it's only a dream.........
  17.

 I've been following this whole thread with great interest! My children and my dogs are perfect, of course, and we have no issues. :D J/K I'd like to add my 2 cents about children....they are NOT being raised the same way they used to be. I say this as a parent, foster parent, and teacher. Years ago, a child came up to pet one of my dogs once in a blue moon, and if I told them "no" or "always ask permission first", they shyly agreed and you knew they were going to obey. Ten years ago, a kid ran up at a horse show and started petting my (leashed) Corgi, and I said-in a very kind voice- you know you should always ask permission before you pet a strange dog, and his mother started yelling "what did she SAY what did she SAY TO HIM!!!" In the past year, I have had my boys to Petsmart, another pet store, park meets for dogs, and a few picnics. Every single time we've had "incidents" involving other people's kids. If I try to talk to them, the parents either interrupt or block me off. Never mind that THEIR child just jumped on top of a 12 inch tall dog; they don't want their kid to be told what to do. There is no opportunity to educate either the child or the parent because they know it all. I have always tried to speak kindly, and quite frankly if your kid just attacked my dog, I have earned the right to talk to him. My dogs are NEVER off leash, even at a picnic, so it's definitely the kid getting into 'our space'. This all relates to the reason many of my friends are getting out of the teaching profession; parents don't want their kids to be told NO or DON'T or otherwise corrected or disciplined. It is a sad thing! Now I realize we're talking about parents in general, and that there are many exceptions. But I'm observing waaaaaaaaay too much of this blatant disregard for any sort of rules. One parent who comes to mind, in a non dog sort of situation, is a physician. I was speaking to his son about how much I expected him to practice piano. He was fairly new to me and this was our first conversation about it, and I was merely giving him information. The dad gets down on his knees to look into the boy's eyes and said, "but we won't make you practice if you don't want to honey, okay? You don't have to practice unless you feel like it!" Ya think that kid is told not to pet strange dogs??? Not on your life!!!
You just summed it up well. However! It's not just the parents that are not giving children discipline...it's also the schools! I know in my son's school the parents who accept that their child misbehaved are the ones with children who are in the wrong more often than not. Those with parents who fight the school and the system...well their kids get away with murder. Example...last year I dropped my son off and as he was going in the gate the teacher on duty was busy talking to the crossing guard (Flirting is more the word...he never did do his job) and this kid walked up to my son and punched him in the face. I drove around to the office and went in demanding that something be done about this. Both kids were pulled into the office. My son was told "Just don't talk to him any more". Seems my son was punched for saying good morning to a kid who didn't like him. The other kid was told not to hit and go back to class. Now the school has rules in place that say that for fighting or hitting a child is suppose to recieve a detention at least. This child got nothing! When I asked the principal why he didn't get anything I was told that the pricipal didn't feel like dealing with his mom AGAIN! So because the principal doesn't want to "deal" with a kids mom (who no doubt it a bully like her son) the kid gets away with breaking rules...combine the two...you have a kid who learns that being a bully gets you what you want and that he is immune to the rules. I remember the days when you screwed up in school you were AFRAID of going to the pricipals office or having your parents called. My son is like that...you tell him you are going to call his mom and he begs you not to! I've actually heard other kids dare someone in the office to call their parents.
I totally agree with both of you ladies !!! I've done Daycare for near 20yr. and I can tell you that Parents don't have control of their kids anymore !! The Parents allow the Children to rule the roost (so to speak) If one child comes without a jacket on and it's the middle of winter......the parent is saying "I couldn't get Johnny to put his coat on....." What the hell do you mean ?? You couldn't get him to ??? If that was my kid he'd have that coat on before we left the house, no discussion !!! And a lot (I won't say everyone) has this attitude about their kids like... "Not my kids, they wouldn't do that..." even if the darned kid was caught red-handed doing it !!! :evilbat: Schools also have no control anymore over kids since they did away with corporal punishment. Now no one is afraid to go to the Principal's office because what's he going do ??? NOTHING !!! Because he can't !! The worst he could possibly do is give the kid suspension and we all know the kid isn't going to mind that !! Kids have no respect for adults or authority anymore, it's the way they're being raised. P.S.....As far as corporal punishment in the schools go, I know that is a very touchy subject. I personally made it all through school without ever being smacked by the Principal, I know plenty that did get cracked with the yardstick on the butt, and it certainly didn't kill them. In elementary school I did get slapped on the back of the calf with a ruler by the Librarian for talking in the Library........I was guilty of the crime and I definitely made a note to speak more softly !!
  18. I've had both mixes and purebreds during my life...... When I was young we had a LabX named Duke, after Duke died my parents got a Boston Terrier named Boots. Boots had pups and we kept one and named her Skeeter. I got my first dog when I was 15, she was a German Shepherd X named Hildegarde. She was my one in a million dog, she was perfect. Then I got married and my husband had 2 Borzoi, Meisha and Sersa. When Meisha passed we got Raina German Shepherd. At some point Sersa ran off with Raina and we never got her back.(I think she was stolen) :x When Sersa passed on we got Nakita Akita/Rott cross. Nakita was my best friend until she passed on at almost 15yr. Then we got Sassy JRT, Gretchen Lab/Rott , and Maisy JRT. I love them and they mean the world to me wheter they're pure, mixed or whatever !!
  19. I've been away for awhile........ I'm so sorry Tammy...... :( R.I.P Ariel
  20.

This is a little off topic, but I've noticed that it's not uncommon for people who love dogs to not be very enthused about little children. Does this ring true for anyone else? The correlation surprises me because I can draw a lot of similarities between dogs and kids.
Not true for me.....I'm a dog lover through and through. I love my 3 "Grrlz" with all my heart, even my hubby is jealous, he says they come before him !! :x BUT, I have 4 kids, 3 grandchildren, and I have done Daycare for kids (all ages) for the past 20 years. And I think you're right to a degree kendalyn, dogs and kids act very much alike in some instances  !! Especially when they're being naughty !!
  21. I've heard both sides....some people LOVE Petsmart and some people HATE Petsmart.... We don't have one of those, we have something called PetDepot, which sells animals and supplies but doesn't offer any training, picture taking etc..... About the KID from Hell  .......her parents were totally out to lunch, what a couple of morons !! I have always told my kids they cannot approach dogs they do not know. They must ask permission to approach from the owner of the pet. When we are in stores, they have also been taught not to touch merchandise....... That kid playing with the frisbee and banging it on the floor, if she were my kid she would've been getting an instant swat on her backside !! :evilbat:

    "New" Breed??

I whole-heartedly agree with everyone above !! You will never be able to recreate that one in a million dog !! Just cherish the wonderful times you had with him and keep the memories. I know.....I too had that one in a million perfect dog.....she was a German Shepherd cross, there will never be another one like her. Hildegarde
  23. All 3 of my "Grrlz" are spayed and my cat is neutered. It's the best for all of them health-wise. I don't want to seem rude, but where are you from and what kind of Vet do you see that can't advise you on the health benefits of Spaying or Neutering your pet ? :-? You said your dog has short legs.....what breed or mix is it ?? What is his name ?? Good luck and I hope you decide to get him neutered !! :D
  24.
BTW: When doing a search I find it most handy to ask Jeeves... www.ask.com
Thanks Divine :D !! I used Google and all they had was things about Sea Turtles.......nothing about dogs with FP :( I'll have to see about using that Ask Jeeves.
  25. We have skunks here and boy is that smell one you never forget !! :o :P I always put mine on leads when we go out at night....just in case !!
