Taking Zebra in for sugery this thursday.
StarFox replied to StarFox's topic in Everything about dogs
Thank you all so much..I realy needed all the kind words, I've been an absolut mess this week. We just dropped Zebra off at the vets, he was so happy to see all these people and when they took hiim I cried so much and cried all the way home. My mom cried too and kept hugging Zebra untill they took him out of the room. My dad and brother waited in the car because they would have cried too and they are macho guys who think crying is for sissys  . But the doctor assured us that they would call when the sugery was over and he was awake. When we were waiting in the waiting room there were 2 women in there who's dog was having internal bleeding and they had to rush him to the vet. :( But they said that there dog had to have a total hip replacement and a TPO and he was fantastic after and that DR.Rooks (our doctor) was amazing, so that did make me feel a little better. Oh yea Zebra did the funniest thing while we were waiting, they have this big glass doors there and they have some kind of tint on them so you can't see outside, but you can only see your reflection. And zebra started acting all funny while looking at the door, he started to whine and bay and I relized that he thought there was another dog in the window! But it was just his reflection , Such a silly little dog. I can't wait till we can see him on saturday, but I wanna see him now! :( I think this is going to be the longest few days ever! -
I'm rather curious HappyBooker1...what tyep dog are your breeding? Do the parents of these pups have helth check? Like Hip and elbow tests? Are they certified?

Zebra has this "problem" ...every time I sit down to eat, and I mean EVERY time....Zebra has to go poo. Which means I have to take him out...while my food is sitting there getting cold. and after he goes he comes inside and begs for food...like he "made room" to eat more or something.  . And if anyone else is eating he puts his head under there arm right as they have a big spoonfull or forkfull of something and he jerks his head up as hard as he can so the person drops whatever they are eating on the floor so he can get it...

Guess it's a good thing it's never winter here!! Except for a little rain every now and then. But i do have a cute little sweater that Zebra whears when he goes outside, it helps to keep his hips warm. Newfiemom-I know people probably think that your dogs look like a Saint and every other dog except for what they realy are. So i figure you might get a laugh out of this.....someone thought that Zebra was a Newfie! How My Zebra looks anything like a newfie i will never know! :niewiem: :hmmmm:

Dangerous Dog Warning From Animal Control!!!
StarFox replied to Sharpeigirl's topic in Everything about dogs
What a bunch of BS! Like you don't have enough to deal with then this...sheesh! But I don't understand why would the UPS guy call the animal control just because she was barking? I'm sure he gets barked at by allot of dogs, I wonder why he singled out your dog? What an arse. I'm glad your taking her down to AC to show them that they have no idea what they are talking about. I think it realy stinks that they accuse you of something and don't even take the time out to make sure if there information is correct. Good luck, I hope things get worked out for you. Hmm and as for "Concerned pet owner"--------- "it's obvious that someone who is aware of ALL of this dogs problems called the authorities in order to prevent further damage, "........ Umm I don't think a UPS man is someone who is well "aware" of sassy's "problems". And I think Sharepeigirl is doing the best she can in the given situation. -
My mom called and made the appointment for Zebra to have the first of this 3 operations. We have to take him there this Thursday and they are going to operate early friday morning. He is having his TPO (triple Pelvic osteotomy) on his right hip. We have BEARLY enough money to cover this operations but we figure that we better save the right hip before it gets any worse. I'm so sad, scared, nervious..I don't want to drop off my baby and just leave him there. He is going to be so scared and not going to know what's going on. But the vet did say that we can bring his favourite toy so that when he wakes up from the anestesia he has something there to comfort him(we are going to take his Mallard that he carries around everywhere). And a nurse is with them when they wake up, so that does make me feel a little better. And a nurse calls everyday to tell us how he is doing, so that is good too. But he will be there from 3-5 days and we can visit him the day after his surgery. But i'm not going to have my Zebby here for 4-7 days!!! I don't know what I'm going to do, I'm going to be sooo worried!

Is he drinking water like normal? And urinating regularly? Is he eating and just not pooping? or is he not eating AND not pooping? Either way you might want to take him to the vet just to make sure nothing is wrong.

That is great news! It sounds like she is realy starting to make herself at home. :P

I agree with Nancy B 100%. A training class would probably do wonders. Do you have a local petsmart where they give training classes? There are so many dogs, people, other animals, and noises that the dog realy learns to focus only on you. Zebra had the same problem but taking him to training class worked wonders on him.

Thanks you all for you support, i don't know what i would do without you all. You just like my big dogo family. :P Mouse- I know I'm furious at BYB, breeders who don't care, and people who let there un-nutered/spayed dogs run around. It's people like us that have to fix there mistakes and the anger i have for them is beyond words. :x Judy- Zebra is 1 year and 5 months. He has been like this for 5 months but has been getting progressivly worse. Rowie- Both my parents want to have all the sugeries done. My mom wants to take out a loan for the payments. My mom said somethint yesturday that got me thinking she said that yes he would have to be in recovery and crated for 12 weeks (3 months! :o ) But he would live pain free for 6 or more years. ANd that's true....he will have a good life ahead of him. The Surgeon said that Zebra will most likely be more hyper and more strong then he is now after he has the surgery (The doc has a 95% sucsess rate, that the dogs are better after the surgerie then before). Oh and thanks for asking rowie....I think zebra might be a little depressed because he would have to be in a cage for a few weeks but I think i might take it allot harder then him.

Well today was the day. We found out what kind of surgery that we needed for Zebra's hip. When we got to the Vets the people that worked there were sooo nice and helpful! The love Zebra and didn't mind him kissing them on the mouth. Well we went into this small waiting room......or at least we thought it was a waiting room but it was actually the examination room! It was huge! A computer, a little rug, soft comfy chairs, beautiful pictures...it was so cool. Anyways we meet the doctor and he checked Zebra and had him walk around a little bit outside so he could look at his hips. ...Now here is where all the bad stuff comes in. :( He asked if he could do some more x-rays on Zebra because we only had one x-ray of his hips and it wasn't very good. So i said sure no problem. Then he asked if he could do a Palpation Exam......and then he said that the exam required for Zebra to be put under anesthesia!!!!!! :o This was an important exam for him do to because he needed to see the angle that the hip slips out of the socket. So I let him do it...Oh I cried soo much! I was not expecting him to have anything like this done today! My poor baby had no idea what was going on. SO while they took more x-rays and put him under anestesia one of the nurses took us around to the entire hospital to show us around. Well I know that many of you have seen 'Emergency Vets' on animal planet, and how great the facility they have that they show on TV. Well this hospital was 3 times that! They have everything you can think of! MRI's, surgical dentist, at least 4 huge inside kennel areas, a hyperbaric chamber, there own cat blood transfusion center, ultrasound, there own lab where they do all the blood wook, ICU, I mean they had everything! I was amazed! It was just a smaller version of a people hospital  . So we went to the waiting room untill we could go back and talk with the vet while he showed us what zebra's hips were like (zebra was still asleep). Anyways while we were waiting there was this woman who was waiting to get her 2 goldens from there and we started talking. Apparently her dogs had Hip Dysplacia and had had a total hip replcement and TPO (Triple Pelvic Osteotomy(i'll get to that in a moment)). Anwyas this woman was great and she could not stop raving about the work they had done on her dogs and how they were like brand new dogs. She eased my fears allot. FInally we got called back and the doctor showed us how Zebra's hips were forrmed and all that. We were sent into a waiting room untill they took him out of anestesia. The doctor finally came back and told us what kind of operation Zebra would need. ....Ok now here is the realy realy bad part. Zebra's Left hip needs a Total hip replacement. His right hip needs a TPO-Where they put a specally designed surgical implant that stabalizes the pelvis. And captures the ball of the femer in the hip cup. This would stop the right him from becomming anyworse. ..So not only do BOTH his hips need work...but so do his elbows! Zebra has Canine Elbow Dysplasia too! It is a 1 and a half on a scale of 3. So it's not very server but they have to go in a pull out a small peice of bone that broke off and is now whearing on his cartilage. And he has very very very small arthritis in his elbows because he is putting 80% of his weight on his front legs. So yes in total we need 4 surgery's and all at the cost of .....12 THOUSAND dollars! Not including medication and re-checks every week for 12 weeks. My mom says yes we will get all the surgerys' done but the more I think about it the more upset I get. Is it realy fair for me to have him go threw so much just so I can be happy and have him longer? Zebra will need to be crated for 12 weeks, he can't run, play or anything. The first few weeks the ONLY time he can come out of his crate is to go the bathroom then right back into his crate, and that's not fair to him. The more I think about it the more I wonder if I'm doing this for him or for me? I can't think of loosing my baby but I'm just having so many conflicting emotions now. Everytime I think of it I just cry so much but I realy don't know what to do. I'm sorry i'm like a blubbering idiot crying and all. But that's what happend today at the vets.

I agree with everyone's posts. But I realy don't get why it has to look tough or strong? What do you plan on doing with the dog? Obediance training? Agility? Have you thought about going down to your local pound and looking around instead of buying a dog? How much time do you plan on devoting to this dog daily? Do you work long hours? Would the dog be home more than 8 hours at a time? And as for the Great Dane, they are beautiful dogs but they are HUGE! And since you live in an appartment I don't know how practicle that would be. Plus my dad always told me "Big dog, big poops"

Quoted from the BBB- "Based on BBB files this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to unanswered complaints concerning selling, product quality and customer service issues. Consumer complaints indicate misrepresentations in advertising practices, some pets had health conditions not disclosed at the time of the purchase and unsatisfactory customer service. " Well then why don't the do something about it? Like close them down?!

Ok well we are FINALLY going to meet with the surgeon on sunday morning to talk about Zebra's Hip Dysplacia. I'm so happy that we are finally going to go..but i'm still a little scared. I have some questions that I'm going to ask him but I wanted to know if there was anything else I should ask. Here is what I have so far- - How often have you preformed this type of surgery? What precent of these surgery's is a total sucess? -Does this surgery require special equipment? Is it available? -What should I expect the outcome of the surgery to be? -What fallow-up care is needed/Necessary? -What should our realistic expectations be after the surgery? That's all i have...any suggestions on what else to ask? I'm really happy with the vet that will be preforming this operation he is board certified from The America College of Veterinary Surgeons. He has been threw a three year residency program and has had his reseach published. And he specalizes in Orthapedic surgery. Well I'll tell you all how it goes when I get back from the vets on Sunday.

The father wants to take the dog away so she won't be in pain when the dog dies?? :-? Well she will be upset when the dog is taken away anyways..so that dosn't make much sense to me. Maybe the dad just dosn't want to pay the bills if the dog gets sick and thinks it's better if he takes the dog away. Or maybe he just dosn't like the dog and wants to get rid of it. Either way it's a bad situation. Sorry to say but the dad sounds like a Grade-A Butthead to me.

WOOHOO!! That is great news!!! :P

I read somewhere, i don't remember where though. That feeding your dog out of plastic bowls is bad? Is this true? Why? Sorry about the lame question, just kinda curious.
