Hi Michelle... I can't really help with the poo problem, but with the smell problem... you are probably aware now if you weren't before you got your dogs that hounds, more so than other breed groups, are well-known for their "doggy" smell and Bassets in particular. When we had our Basset we just put up with it (I cannot recall it ever being overpoweringly pongy) because having her was worth it; she was around for 14 years! :D Obviously I can't go round to your place and check out the smell... but do they go out and roll in stuff, or bring back smelly things on their paws, or is it just their natural smell? Maybe it has something to do with their diet and it may be worth consulting your vet if the smell is really getting to you.

We did this with our dogs (swapped brands and flavours) and it made no difference to them... so I suppose it would be ok? Each dog is different though, but ours don't really seem to care what flavour it is as long as it's food and they get it. There's a Far Side cartoon with a woman and her dogs and the caption is "OH BOY!! DOG FOOD AGAIN!!!" and I reckon that about sums it up. :D

Oh and I forgot to add: my dog is an ACD/BC mix and you should have some sort of idea by now of his craziness. Temperament wise you couldn't ask for a sweeter and more loyal dog. He has never, ever bitten anyone and his patience with smaller dogs is infinite. My grandpa's dachshund will annoy him to the point where I'd like to strangle the little sausage myself, but BK will just ignore him or engulf Tomson's head in his mouth as a warning, no teeth, just scary dog breath. :D He is very friendly with people but if he's had enough human contact he'll just wander off down the yard and amuse himself. Mind you he pretends to be tough but he's just a big sook inside! He is also an excellent guard dog- very deep protective bark, very agile and muscular, he could do some serious damage with those teeth if he saw I was in danger, no worries there. BK likes: other dogs (bigger or same size, all the more to play with), he gets along very well with our other dog Rinny, a GSD X. Mind you both of them are very dominant (well Rinny isn't anymore, he's too old for any sort of play) and it took a few years for BK to wrest away alpha from Rinny and he never gave up trying either  He also likes to herd people and isn't happy if everyone's not in the same spot. He's very vocal and will tell you what he's thinking whether you want to hear it or not. :D And he will answer back by nipping your ankles or doing this horrid high-pitched play bark which is extremely annoying. I don't know what he's like around livestock but I think some sort of instinct would kick in, whether that's good or bad I'll never know. He does not like toys, unfortunately, which is weird considering most ACDs are tennis ball addicts. When he was younger he'd play with anything if he could destroy it or if Rinny had it and he could play keepings off. Anyway that's probably enough for now, PM me if you want more info (but there's probably lots in those links!). Hobbit would also be a great source of info as he has both ACDs and BCs...

K- coming out of the mouth of a 4000+ poster?! :o  I tell you Koolie, sometimes I wish I COULD talk the hind legs of a dog off, that might stop him from escaping, or being destructive...

I think it is 1 paw at 20, 2 paws at 50, 3 paws at 100, 4 paws at 500, 5 paws at 2000....??? I know some of it is right but not sure about the first three paws. :-?
This is probably a bit unusual but I have one girl who just wont go on a slippery floor. I have both carpet and wood floors and have to have rugs on the smooth floors for her. If a rug gets moved and she cant reach the next one she will stand at the edge and bark. When I take the rugs up to clean she is marooned in on the carpet. So perhaps you should check first that yours will even walk on the smooth stuff. She is the only one I have had like this, don't know why she does it, she has been like it from the first day I got her. If I put her down on the smooth area, she will panic and legs go in all directions. Just another quirky thing these dogs can come up with
LOL  At our old house we had wood floors sealed with polyurethane and BK would come charging in from wherever and would skid all over the place, especially if he landed on his blanket, he and the blanket would go sliding for a few metres. It was priceless seeing the look on his face when he realised he wasn't really in control of what was going on... then would regain his composure and act like nothing had ever happened...

:o i am getting a 404 error from that link...

Daisy too much garlic is bad for a dog because it is from the same family as the onion. In moderation I believe it is very good though. It's like avocadoes... I've always been told they are toxic but there are sites which tell you it is ok to feed to dogs...
-
have you got a link to it??? We haven't got it here. :-?
-
I'm glad you found something that worked for Charlie! :D The main thing is that he's not getting any allergic reactions... basically, whatever floats his boat
-
I feed Pal Pedigree, one can and three handfuls of dry each... yes I know it is rubbish and I was looking into BARF... but both our dogs have done well on Pedigree with absolutely no health problems (well Rinny does have arthritis etc but he's 16 so I think it is just old age!) and seeing as I don't live with either of them anymore (I did have BK here but due to his destruction of 2 1/2 fences and the weatherboards of the back of the rented house he has been deported back to dad's  ) I can't do much about their diet. :-? Anyway it seems to suit them fine, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Try celery tablets. We have a 16 yr old GSD X who did very well on celery tablets for a long time and he has severe arthritis (and age-itis  ). My aunt's 14 yr old Beagle also takes celery tabs for her arthritis and it's worked very well for her. You can get celery tablets at any health food store and I also think the supermarket has them. Good luck!

good stuff!!! Hope it works out for you guys. :D

Geez I don't know pawpaw... will someone be around constantly to look after a puppy? Also bear in mind that a rescue dog will need people around for a little bit to help him/her settle in... I think your dad should get another dog... fair enough your other baby has just gone to the bridge but for some people getting another dog soon after is as much part of the healing process as waiting a year or so. It's up to the individual I guess... good luck and let us know what he decides to do! :)

I have noticed that as well... :( :( :( :(
