Speaking of chaining your dog..... I visit a business associate each week. They have a chow (purebred, black, laid back dog) on about a 4 foot chain on the carport. I asked their children whether he is ever walked, and they said no. he has no dog house, altho I suppose the carport would be counted as "shelter". I don't see anyone pet him. He is rather surprised that I talk to him as I go in and out. There are usually about 8 "piles" in his little area, and every so often somebody goes out and hoses it off (without moving the dog out of the way.) Suggestions?

Hobbit, surely you are making this up!!!
We have one male Datson puppy 4 months old that needs to find a good home. Lives and plays well with kids, other dogs and a cat. Has been wormed, but not sure if he has had his shots. $100 FIRM If you buy this little boy, we also have his best friend, a 6 month male orange tabby, he is very loving. I don't know what these two will do if they are seperated. So, if you like he can go with the puppy also. UNLESS you are just wanting a kitty, he is free. Litter box trained.
OK so we have a CAR that is a puppy  .... what's up with the shots, they gave them to some of the puppies but they aren't sure which ones???... and you get a free cat....
$250/shots included. Negoitable $50.00 Deposit Required
I'm not sure what is negotiable, the shots, the price, or the deposit????
Chaweenies
:o :o
First of all, I have to say that I respect your change of heart, but I stand by my convictions.
I'm sorry, I must not have said what I meant. I have not had a "change of heart", as far as changing any beliefs. I would just rather educate than attack. And as far as someone tying their dog out, I was trying to say, let's look at the whys and wherefores. 8) And in my statement that we were 'judging' too quickly, I certainly was talking to dogwhisperer!!!
Remember the whole Mary thing?
No, I came right after that, or maybe during and didn't get it.
I extended a sincere offer to work with this person and try to help any way I could, but all we got in return were alter egos and she created her own personal amen corner in the form of other identities. It's obvious that she's just angry and lashing out at this point rather than actually being a productive member of this "community."
I completely agree. She doesn''t WANT to be a member of our community.
Sorry, Corgi. :(
NOT a problem, horsefeathers!!! I was not throwing my dart at anyone in particular, and certainly not you....you, out of all of us, went wayyy beyond the call of duty with your soul-baring "talks" with this woman. (man?) she/he just didn't get it. So sorry.

I have been thinking all day about that....how quick we all are to judge... speaking as one of the guilty ones... I don't think we are doing each other/ourselves a service by judging so quickly, or perhaps I really mean by jumping onto each other so quickly....if our goal is to educate then we need to keep someone *~besides our perfect selves~* around TO educate....does that make any sense? and again, I am talking to myself here, as well as others. And of course situations do change; I know when my hubby and I had kids, we had all these " I would never" statements, that all went right down the toilet once we had REAL screaming babies to deal with! And it's the same with our pets!!! Also there are divorces, sudden moves, job losses, etc that can affect our pets' living arrangements. So I guess all we can do is the best we can do..... And this is only slightly off topic  Before you judge someone, walk a mile in their shoes. Then you will be a mile away, and you will have their shoes.
Dogwhisper, I wish I knew each and every person on this forum personally just like you do. Then, by knowing them, their everyday duties, their life style, their ins and outs, their schedules, their morals, their beliefs, etc ..... then I could sit back and judge them, also. How did you come to know every single person on this forum so well?
   Hobbit my essay is in the mail. And by the way, about chaining dogs: around 8 or 10 years ago I knew of a chow who was tied out...his chain was one of those rubber covered ones, looked very safe. Well the covering kind of wore or something, and when the people brought him in to the vet, chain and all, it had twisted around his fur until it had his skin too....he had to be anesthetized just to get it undone! Owie! That said, I do tie mine out front when I am working on the roses. They like to sit out there with me.

Hi Trinity! We walk up to 4 miles a day, on a level path. Well more or less level. Since that post I have hiked 3 times on the appalachian trail with my border collie. On one of the hikes, it was pretty rough going and full of rocks....I was REALLY glad the corgis weren't there. Maybe later on...

and, when my neighbor took my fence down, I was without one except for the dog run, which is only 10 X 25. So for MONTHS I walked (and walked and walked) the dogs....it is a PAIN!!! It is not good for them, but trust me it is not good for you either!!!

Gee thanks for sharing, Jacsmom!  NVMY, there are little baggies you can buy at the petstore for picking up poop. you put it over your hand, grab the pile, and pull the bag over it. sounds yukky but it's not too bad. There is even a little container for carrying the bags that hangs on your leash. However, if your newspaper comes in a baggie, that works just as well. I use those (everyone saves them for me  ). As near as I can tell I save $11 a month by using the newspaper bag. I have never heard of anyone putting a bag under a dog as he goes...like the bags they put on horses, you mean?.... guess it would work, if he stood still...one of mine walks all around as he goes
-
Better yet Hobbit, why don't you BREED them... sell them on the 'net..... wow I would like to have one too, think what you'd save on the dogfood bill....

Hello, I have been to a shelter (years ago) where I was treated that way. It was just the ATTITUDE. Like I wasn't good enough for their dogs. Then when I adopted the dog, they called on the phone and said, we have information that you gave the dog away. :o heck no! I didn't give him away! I don't know what their issue was, really. About the trees.... I overheard someone talking about adopting a greyhound, and they were gonna check her yard because they said holly bushes (for example) were poisonous. Maybe that's why they were asking! :) Although you'd think they would explain it...

silly question but what is the largest and smallest breeds

and shoot at us as we gallop by on HORSES, somehow mistaking us for....???? -
:o Sheesh you work all day and look what you miss. Ebby I posted this question:
Ebby, as the owner of the male, how much homework are you going to do on the females? Are you going to insist on certain tests and so on? How responsible is the male's owner for the litter? For example, are you going to have any contact with the puppies' owners, so that if any of them ever gave up the puppy they would bring it to you instead of the animal shelter?
It was never answered of course. However, look here: Ebby said:
I too, was offered a puppy (1 yr. old) with a heart murmer just last week....and I have to say, I would have taken him if it wasn't for the fact that the other alternative is to stay at the kennel where he is and live a long and happy life with people who know more about this and are better equipt to deal with it than I or my family.
Ebby feels that a dog kept in a kennel is better off than a dog in a home. Ebby also said:
even their kittens were never advertised in the paper
She is also breeding her cats and she said:
Now the 2 yr old (my husbands new dog) is growling at MY dog whenever he comes near me or I attempt to go near him and he comes between us and puts his chin on the back of my dogs neck and growls low, pushing my dogs head down a bit....<snip> and also Incidentally, the new dog DID open his mouth and 'wet' my dogs ear in a scuffle over me (or so it appears)...I couldn't call him off
She is going to breed a golden who acts like this? Also, the above 2 bits were posted on Nov 1, and on Nov 2 she gave away the first dog, her "love" that she had rescued (read: borrowed for 1 year). Apparently, this happened:
not ignoring the ruined furniture he ate, the ruined carpet he had 'accidents' on when he wasnt feeling well, the leather jacket he used as a chew toy, the scratches he left on the side of our BRAND NEW van when he wanted to go for a car ride etc etc - the list is a lot longer if you include the kids toys they left laying around)
at the old place, so at the new one she kept him outside all the time, and the barking drove the neighbors nuts. Was he ever played with? Or petted? and then there is this:
Oh yeah, and HOBBIT, I think you know where you can stick your unfounded opinions....
and this:
"kiss my arse...you have no idea what you are talkin about ...as usual
 What ladylike speech. Our friend Ebby doesn't look at the world the same way that we do. She needs to be educated on a few points: genetics (Hobbit?) and the sadder side of rescue (Horsefeathers?) and general info about what makes a "good" dog, i.e., conformation, MANNERS, etc (roo?) She also needs to learn how to train a dog, if this isn't the first one that she has re-homed...read that somewhere...posted by a different member. Also Ebby, if you cannot control the new dog, he will walk all over you soon, regardless of his "previous training". ALSO....I know the old owners told you he would only eat food "from his owners"????But I wouldn't count on that!!! If you leave him outside to get poisoned, it probably WILL happen! And...just so you know....on petfinder alone there are 1349 goldens.... ONLY ON ONE SITE....that doesn't count all the other (countless) sites, and purebred rescues, etc. THAT"S A LOT OF DOGS.... here is a link to one: www.tvgrr.com In afew years, some of those could be "your" puppies. PLEEEEEEEASE think about this.

I would change it. Bad connotations, you know, from before.
