:o OK you know what a struggle Koda has been. Last night I took him (only him) upstairs with me to watch a movie. He of course was thrilled and rolled all over me most of the time. We had been up there about an hour when we started playing a little rougher(wrestling) and he was jumping on & off the couch. He also bowed while up on the couch, and kind of bent sideways with his head on the seat and BARKED at me for like, 10 minutes. I kept asking him what he wanted but I couldn't figure it out. So I told him to settle down, and made him lay there beside me. I had my hand on his head and I felt his ears go back like they do when he feels guilty. He then jumped up and ran off and ---- he had peed all over the couch! While laying on it!!!! Is that weird or what? I don't *think* he was telling me he needed out; normally he goes back and forth to the stairs! What's up with this?????

Carrying a 5 month old Lab up 4 flights of stairs
corgilady replied to eggrolyn1223's topic in Everything about dogs
Egg, since the dog is already going down a few steps, why not give a name to that (like " go downstairs") and then treat & praise ("good downstairs!") for it. After a few times of that, try saying the command at the other place ("go downstairs, Duck!"). Be sure to praise for even a little movement toward moving down the stairs. Either that or lift weights, cuz Duck will only get heavier! -
Wow that was really well written; thanks! :D

Hi Shara, I have no good advice, as I have not experienced what you are going through. But it sounds like you are trying to take the right steps: obedience training, socialization, gentle leader, etc. Best of luck to you!!

 BK silly, don't you speak dog? <JOKING> Bensam, you're right, we all have our own experiences... some things work with some dogs.... I have tried the water hose for example and it didn't phase them. I'm glad this topic is here because mine are STILL FIGHTING and I am not happy about it. I followed everyone's directions about letting them know that I am alpha, alpha, alpha but they do not care when they feel like fighting. Last weekend my friend was here visiting, HER dogs of course act like little ladies. MIne usually only get into a tussle when there is FOOD present and when they are CONFINED IN THE KITCHEN (both of these things at the same time). But Koda fell in love with my friend, rolled all over her the whole evening, so he & toby got in this huge argument. Next thing you know, the fur was flying. I didn't want to let them hurt one another, and she was just standing back with this horrified look on her face. So I got the broom and kind of hit/pushed toby with the bristle part; sort of "herded" him away from Koda with it. Koda ran under the table, as he hates the broom, and Toby laid down at my feet, but still growled for a long time. ( he was calling Koda a son of a gun, BK) It is very upsetting to me that my dogs fight at ALL. I try to give them all individual attention, and I have even been separating them some. Also, it was embarrassing to me that my friend saw me take a broom to my dog. So, keep talking folks. I'll make a list. Then, the next time they fight, I will get out my list and read it to them. whoops sorry. there i go again mucking up a serious post.

I thought it was odd too, that no rescue had stepped in! Maybe they are full?
They seem to think it's funny if their dog menaces what they consider to be an aggressive breed.
I think THIS is the crux of the matter.....they are probably the same ones who insist on speeding up when you're trying to drive past them...

 Dynamite comes in small packaages, y'know!!! Musher, I think it's pretty obvious that YOU aren't really doing the type of chaining up that we see as typical....around here, a dog "chained up" is also a dog neglected, who can't reach his water, or can't get in out of the rain, has no socialization....etc. Yours are cared for!

:o Well you can't tell much about the dogs from the website, can you? They do have nice horses though!
Hey Corgilady -- TAKE A LOOK AT THEM!! http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/lancashireheeler.htm Welsh Corgi and Manchester Terrier cross. These mini heelers these people are talking about are Australian Cattle Dogs (Heelers) crossed with a Chihuahua or Rat Terrier.
GOOD GRIEF!!!!!!! I can't believe it. Frankly I just can't understand ANY of these mixes. Everyone who breeds a dog should spend 7 solid days in an animal shelter first.

OK my couple of pennies worth..... I have 3 kids and have fostered 5 others. For the last 11 years I've done it solo. I collect kids just like I collect pets. I was WAYYY to young and stupid when I had kids, to think about whether my dogs would like him, etc. My dogs hated the baby, as they had been the babies....they pooped and peed on all of his stuff until hubby found new homes for the dogs. :agrue: Hubbys who are messy, sloppy, whatever WILL NOT CHANGE. having a baby gives you more responsibility, more stress, and yep---no sleep. hubby said to me once, do you realize we will be 42 years old before we ever sleep a night thru?????? Not true of course, eventually they get older and let you take a nap...maybe....if they can remember not to blast the stereo for 30 min. GIGI have you talked to hubby about his role with all this? Is he gonna share the parenting responsibilities? Does he think he is ready? Also think about how HIS parents were with HIM....that becomes really important because we tend to raise a child like we were raised!!! My brother is a good example of this. We have a great dad. He is the best dad anybody could ever want. (He tries to be a dad to my kids, too, since they don't really have one). So my brother has this baby who is about 20 months old. My brother is WONDERFUL with him. He will work 12 hour days and then come home and play with him, and get up with him all nite or just whatever he needs. That is because of how HE was raised. His wife, on the other hand, dumps the baby on the closest person with no regard to anyones feelings (including the baby). My mom is not well, and shouldn't watch him more than a few hours at a time. She has tried to impose time limits, but the little mommy drops him off and then won't answer her cell phone etc so mom ends up with him forever. Also even if he is holding up his hands and saying, "mommy mommy" she ignores him. And THAT is how SHE(B****) was raised; she was mostly raised by her grandmother, because her mom was too busy flitting around to bother with her!!! That is a long story, and I'm sorry, but these things are important; they seem to become magnified once we have kids. So be very sure....and best of luck to ya..... and after all is said and done, just look into those sweet little faces and your heart will swell and you will know that they are worth walking thru fire !!!!!! :D :D :D

My sentiments exactly, Mcobbin!!! Also, if you are DRIVING, you cannot observe your pet and if there is any sign of hips or paws hurting, you'll miss it....until it becomes worse. I'm gonna buy a bike just so I can exercise Koda.....if I can teach him to run with it and not herd it, that is.

HOBBIT I am ready to help you beat that woman.....   why don't you send a friend over posing as a customer, and see if they can spot your pup? Better yet, how about talking a COP into doing that? About the autistic child, I just watched a show about an autistic boy who got a dog...it had been specially trained to help keep him home and be his companion. A female lab, I think. About 6 weeks into it he started to respond to her (verbally AND physically) like he had NEVER done with anyone, even his family. It was really neat!!! And re the other ads.... I can't believe someone would say, "I have a really large house, but not enough $$$ for a dog"!!! and other such nonsense. My response would be, the price is the LEAST of your expenses for a pet, so i am sure you cannot afford one!!!!!!!

  I kissed 'em, Mei-mei....wonder why they growled??? all I said was here shelties, a kiss from mei-mei......

You know, I was going to let this pass without comment, but I have changed my mind. There are too many people who listen to rumor and too much of the time the rumors are borne by idiots. Consider the statement, "Hunting and herding dogs, for example, have to be chained up or they will trail or herd all day and night. " Now where in the world did someone get that idea???? This puts me in mind of a fellow I went out with 2 wks ago. :evilbat: He was telling me how to get my dog to walk better on a leash (take a choke chain, and jerk the he** out of him a few times, which 'YOU>>BEING A WOMAN' cannot do). I was striving to be polite, even as I seethed. So I tried to turn the topic to the dog's favorite games. He said, if he likes to fetch then he is most certainly NOT a border collie.Well, he is a border collie. And he DOES like to play fetch. He told me a few more of these hillbilly, backwoods, ignorant statements. Australian shepherds are mean and crazy. Border collies are one-owner dogs and will bite anyone else. WElsh corgis are NOT HERDING DOGS.   He raises aust. shepherds and .... something else. Dobermans, maybe. None of these people have ever opened a book about the breed. They have not attended any activities involving KNOWLEDGEABLE owners (shows, herding trials, etc.). Yet they spout their supposed "expert knowledge" right and left. I am sick of it. I am sick of people chaining their dogs, tying their dogs, abusing/neglecting their dogs. AND I AM SICK OF PEOPLE TELLING ME MY CORGIS ARE BABY SHELTIES!!!!!!!!!!       There. rant is now over. can you tell I don't do well with holidays??? While I am mad, i am going to get help for that chow. The temp was 20 degrees fahrenheit last nite. I can't imagine how that cold concrete felt all night. and don't anybody get upset over the hillbilly comment....ah speek southerne ("southerun") drawl jest as good as enny uv em, ah am as hillbilly as they come.

Having owned a cairn....that seems too much to me. Mine would have been a basket case for the 5 hours she was out in the evening. Is that how Frodo will be?

egg, most of the poems I found were probably too long....but here is one you might like. There's even a link for interpretation of the poem. http://www.emule.com/poetry/qed.pgi?page=poem&poem=3905

Hi egg, my 15 yr old daughter is my resident poetry expert...LOVES poetry. She says you can do an internet search and find tons of poetry sites. Good luck!! And about reading too fast....stop and pretend you need to take a breath at the end of each sentence. That will begin to slow you somewhat.

Koda likes empty milk jugs. He thinks he has won the prize if he has one! Fella loves balls Toby does not play with toys. he is too high class for the rest of us.

BK  that is how I usually handle things, go at it with both barrels! I have tried talking to the children, and (briefly) to the mother. They think the dog leads a charmed life. The kids are completely uninterested in whether he is lonely. I walked mine by their house for months so they could see that my dogs get walks, and conversation, and treats.
