I ordered some of the Wysong. I'll let you know how fast a 20lb. dog consumes it.

It's really the poo eating that bothers me the most believe it or not. He won't do it while I'm watching, but give him a chance and he'll go scarf it down. He gets fed better then any of my previous dogs and they never ate poop. Maybe I should go find some nasty corn based dog food to feed him. :(

Anyone tried this? (Wysong, Steve's Real Food, etc...) I edited the original post because I can't feed the frozen stuff easily.

Kato's been good for so long now I forget that he's still technically a puppy. So yesterday he chewed on my china cabinet, pooped upstairs in the spare bedroom (after going outside 3x and not doing anything) and then ate all but one "log" . And I didn't catch any of it! It's a good thing he's got that cute thing going for him.

1) No age limit. There was a dog at the last show who was 9. 2) Find a good breeder who is willing to be your mentor. I lucked out when the first person I tried to buy a pet Shiba from happened to be the #1 ranked show breeder. She decided I needed a show dog, and it's all gone, er...downhill from there. She's patient, gives me "lessons", and takes me to shows. I think a mentor is invaluable. When you get your puppy, you can take it to matches which are no point practice shows and there are handling classes as well. 3) Basic is fine, but I know a lot of dog that aren't trained at all. All they do is walk on the lead and stand still. A lot of people will also tell you not to teach the dog to sit because then it will sit in the ring. I think this is outdated and taught my dog both sit and stand so he knows the difference. 4) Again, find a good breeder and tell them you are interested in showing. Since show quality can be really expensive - $2500 for a Shiba - a co-ownership can make the price reasonable and you get to keep the dog after it has finished it's championship.

Here's one prescription diet that actually made the WDJ top 10 list. You can check it out here: http://www.vetshow.com/exhibit/ivd/

I use Interceptor chewables.

Maybe a Maltese?

There are at least 2 that are commercial breeders and very pro-APRI - dpaustin and woodsmoke. It just strikes me as pretty ironic that they are mods on an anti-puppymill site.

Ok, here are a few breeders in the New England area. Sorry, I can't really make any recommendations, but these came off the Shiba Club website. The only one I know is good is Innisfree. They have very nice dogs. Tawny Hill Shibas Adele M. Gray Cook Road Prospect, CT 06712 Ph. I will try to find some names for you. For the most part, what Gigi said is correct although mine is not aloof toward strangers at all and loves other dogs. My dog is not the norm. How does your Akita get along with other dogs? I'd be worried about putting the two together because they can both be dog aggressive breeds - and the Shiba does not think it is a little dog! My breeder has seen 8 week old Shiba littermates go at it so it's important to look for good temperment.
-
Anyone else think it's odd that some of the moderators are commercial breeders? They seem very anti-AKC and pro-APRI (the puppymill registry) as well.

How can I lose with this? :D
DogPaddle had a great idea, see if you can get someone you know but is relatively unknown to the dog to act as a judge. Instruct the person well BEFORE they touch Kato. YOU practice your smile and staying calm and collected.
LOL, today I had some contractors in the house fixing some things. Kato was licking the one guys face, making that waaaaaahhhaa noise, and wagging so hard I thought he'd break himself in half. I swear, strangers are just long lost friends to him.

I think we are pretty much on the same page, but I see your list as more welfare issues rather then rights. I will refer to the PETA-ites as radical AR from now on. Animals cannot ask for rights, understand said rights or enforce them so who is going to decide what's in their best interest? PETA thinks it should be them of course! I almost left out my favorite radical AR argument for why riding horses is cruel. Apparently I force - there's that word again - my horse to go over jumps and trot around with me on her back. The lack of knowledge about the subjects they are trying to "save" always amazes me - like I could somehow force my horse to jump if she didn't want to. I weigh 115, she is somewhere around 900. I am perched in a precarious position on her back with only some thin leather strips to ask her to stay straight and not do a 180 on me - who would win this fight? I guess if I didn't mind ending up as a pancake on the other side I might be able to pull it off. Anyway, I think this illustrates the fallacy of letting the radical AR folks decide just what rights animals have - since they don't seem to have a lot of contact with them. And as for PETA, I think this article sums it pretty good: http://www.canoe.ca/Columnists/platt.html

I never implied that cruelty doesn't exist, but PETA's way of addressing the issue really makes me ill. I'd be surprised if any of the money they raise actually goes to help animals. Instead, I'm sure it goes to fund their websites, promote militant veganism, and pay for their rediculous ad campaigns. There are bad people everywhere - people who chain their dogs, sore their horses, people who have to win at any cost. Are we going to ban every sport where an animal "might" get hurt? Cross country is already under fire because sometimes the horses slip or fall. Endurance is cruel because the horse gets tired. Showing dogs is "cruel" because they are "choked and drug around by a noose - FORCED to show!" You see my point? That quote about dog shows is way out there, but I see it made all the time by the AR minions. I think if every effort for the safety and well being of the animal is made, then the PETA people need to shut up, and let the existing welfare laws (that need better enforcement!) take care of the bad guys. Not to mention that some animals actually enjoy the activities I mentioned above.
As for PETA, yes they are smash-mouth and in-your-face...but I have also found them truthful.
Truthful huh? How about when they trivialize the death of millions of people by comparing victims of the Holocaust to cows and chickens? They are absolutely repugnant: http://www.masskilling.com/exhibit.html (Caution: graphic pictures) I won't even address the absurdity of the claim that farmers starve their cattle before market - yeah, that's profitable! And how about the Got Beer? and Jesus was a vegetarian campaigns? Losts of "truth" to those too. They also compared the woman murdered in Canada to slaughtered pigs: http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2002/11/13/peta021113 Yeah, I despise them and hope people will see how vile they are.

I just found out that I have to show Kato myself at his first show next month and I feel nervous already. I thought his breeder was going to take him in first, but she can't. What if I've been doing it all wrong?? He does a stand/stay, will let me stack him, gets groomed on the table every night, walks on his leash nicely... BUT he's very outgoing and I'm worried he'll decide the judge is his new best friend and act like a complete doofus. Every new person he sees is an excuse to wag himself to death. And then there's that whole tripping and falling on my face thing... ACK! How do you people do it?! Oh wait, I know.... :drinking:

There's a nasty puppy broker here that takes their parvo infected puppies back for "veterinary treatment" and just lets them die in the back room. Treatment affects their overhead, and hey, there's a new load coming in next week. They will just replace the old and busted puppy with another one.

I will have to check that one out. I was feeding Canidae canned, but they changed it and it is so fishy smelling it made me gag. The Wellness smells like something I could eat if, say, I was trapped under something heavy and only had access to the bottom shelf of the pantry.
There's a Far Side cartoon with a woman and her dogs and the caption is "OH BOY!! DOG FOOD AGAIN!!!" and I reckon that about sums it up. :D
I thought that too, but he will turn his nose up at the lamb but scarf down the chicken and duck. And why don't you ever see beef food anymore?

Thanks, that's what I needed!

Need someone who dremels their dogs nails to answer this one. What attachment do you use? I heard something about not using the pumice type grinder, but the sand paper one instead.
