  1. Mr. Hedgie was a good dog toy for many months. He didn't squeak like a normal toy. No, he grunted. Ok, let's cut to the chase - he made a noise like a loud fart. His bathroom humor never failed to make us laugh. He was a stoic and gentle soul even when being mauled and slimed by an exuberant Shiba. Alas, all good things must come to an end, or in this case, the garbage can. He met with a violent end - stuffing strewn across the floor, not a grunt left in him. RIP Mr. Hedgie [img]http://www.petsmart.com/images/product/large/in203203grp.jpg[/img]
  2. I find it hard to believe that Missouri has a demand for any kind of dog seeing how it is the puppymill capitol of the world. And as much as I hate to refer you back to Petfinder, you will notice that there are 8549 labs listed on it. [url=http://www.angelfire.com/mi/woodhaven/breeder2.html]So you want to be a breeder[/url] [url=http://www.angelfire.com/mi/woodhaven/video.html]ANNOUNCING "THE MIRACLE OF BIRTH" VIDEOTAPE[/url] [url=http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/medical/whelping.html]Breeding, Whelping, and Rearing Puppies[/url]
  3. Mr. Kato got chipped yesterday. $41 for the Home Again chip. It is a BIG needle and it has a trigger system that shoots the chip in. I'm not sure how bad it actually hurt though. He's so melodramatic about everything, so he let loose one of his famous screams. It was all over in 2 seconds and he was back to wagging his tail at everyone. Now he beeps like a bag of chips from the grocery store.
  4. [quote name='Rosebud'] Girl, you got some top quality stuff, [b]Campaign him[/b]. That's some big deal wins, especially at his age. Send him with a professional handler to the really big shows. BIS winners are also invited to both Westminster and Eukanuba, and you can jump up in the standings with Group 1 wins.[/quote] That takes big $$$$$$$ The road to Westminster can cost $50,000 if you hire a handler - and if you want to play with the big boys at that level, you have to hire a pro. A lot of those top dogs are on the road almost 365 days a year in order to get the points they need. Only the top 5 of each breed get invited, the rest of the slots are run like a lottery. Also, because Shibas are relatively new to the AKC, they don't tend to do well in the groups.
  5. [color=blue]Let's see how Kato would do...[/color] CGC Test Procedures The purpose of the Canine Good Citizen Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community. To receive the CGC certificate, dogs take the 10 item Canine Good Citizen Test. Items on the test include: Test Item 1: Accepting a friendly stranger [color=red]He likes people![/color] This test demonstrates that the dog will allow a friendly stranger to approach it and speak to the handler in a natural, everyday situation. The evaluator walks up to the dog and handler and greets the handler in a friendly manner, ignoring the dog. The evaluator and handler shake hands and exchange pleasantries. The dog must show no sign of resentment or shyness, and must not break position or try to go to the evaluator. [color=red]Oops, too bad. F[/color] Test Item 2: Sitting politely for petting This test demonstrates that the dog will allow a friendly stranger to touch it while it is out with its handler. With the dog sitting at the handler's side, to begin the exercise, the evaluator pets the dog on the head and body. The handler may talk to his or her dog throughout the exercise. The dog may stand in place as it is petted. The dog must not show shyness or resentment. [color=red]Not shy, but he wants your arm in his mouth. F[/color] Test Item 3: Appearance and grooming This practical test demonstrates that the dog will welcome being groomed and examined and will permit someone, such as a veterinarian, groomer or friend of the owner, to do so. It also demonstrates the owner's care, concern and sense of responsibility. The evaluator inspects the dog to determine if it is clean and groomed. The dog must appear to be in healthy condition (i.e., proper weight, clean, healthy and alert). The handler should supply the comb or brush commonly used on the dog. [color=red] Good so far...[/color] The evaluator then softly combs or brushes the dog, and in a natural manner, lightly examines the ears [color=red] Good...[/color] and gently picks up each front foot. [color=red]Oh, so close! But F[/color] It is not necessary for the dog to hold a specific position during the examination, and the handler may talk to the dog, praise it and give encouragement throughout. Test Item 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead) This test demonstrates that the handler is in control of the dog. The dog may be on either side of the handler. The dog's position should leave no doubt that the dog is attentive to the handler and is responding to the handler's movements and changes of direction. The dog need not be perfectly aligned with the handler and need not sit when the handler stops. The evaluator may use a pre-plotted course or may direct the handler/dog team by issuing instructions or commands. In either case, there should be a right turn, left turn, and an about turn with at least one stop in between and another at the end. The handler may talk to the dog along the way, praise the dog, or give commands in a normal tone of voice. The handler may sit the dog at the halts if desired. [color=red]Finally, something he would pass.[/color] Test Item 5: Walking through a crowd This test demonstrates that the dog can move about politely in pedestrian traffic and is under control in public places. The dog and handler walk around and pass close to several people (at least three). The dog may show some interest in the strangers but should continue to walk with the handler, without evidence of over-exuberance, shyness or resentment. The handler may talk to the dog and encourage or praise the dog throughout the test. The dog should not jump on people in the crowd or strain on the leash. [color=red]Yea, another one...Pass[/color] Test Item 6: Sit and down on command - staying in place This test demonstrates that the dog has training, will respond to the handler's commands to sit and down and will remain in the place commanded by the handler (sit or down position, whichever the handler prefers). Prior to this test, the dog's leash is replaced with a line 20 feet long. The handler may take a reasonable amount of time and use more than one command to get the dog to sit and then down. The evaluator must determine if the dog has responded to the handler's commands. The handler may not force the dog into position but may touch the dog to offer gentle guidance. When instructed by the evaluator, the handler tells the dog to stay and walks forward the length of the line, turns and returns to the dog at a natural pace. The dog must remain in the place in which it was left (it may change position) until the evaluator instructs the handler to release the dog. The dog may be released from the front or the side. [color=red]Depends. Can I leave food with him? No? F[/color] Test Item 7: Coming when called This test demonstrates that the dog will come when called by the handler. The handler will walk 10 feet from the dog, turn to face the dog, and call the dog. The handler may use encouragement to get the dog to come. Handlers may choose to tell dogs to "stay" or "wait" or they may simply walk away, giving no instructions to the dog. [color=red]He might actually do this since it's only 10 feet and he didn't just escape from me. I'll pass him.[/color] Test Item 8: Reaction to another dog This test demonstrates that the dog can behave politely around other dogs. Two handlers and their dogs approach each other from a distance of 20 to 30 feet, stop, shake hands and exchange pleasantries, and continue on for about 10 feet. The dogs should show no more than casual interest in each other. Neither dog should go to the other dog or its handler. [color=red]BWAHAHAHA yeah, right. F[/color] Test Item 9: Reaction to distraction This test demonstrates that the dog is confident at all times when faced with common distracting situations. The evaluator will select and present two distractions. Examples of distractions include dropping a chair, rolling a crate dolly past the dog, having a jogger run in front of the dog, or dropping a crutch or cane. The dog may express natural interest and curiosity and/or may appear slightly startled but should not panic, try to run away, show aggressiveness, or bark. The handler may talk to the dog and encourage or praise it throughout the exercise. [color=red]Ooo...another Pass.[/color] Test Item 10: Supervised separation This test demonstrates that a dog can be left with a trusted person, if necessary, and will maintain training and good manners. Evaluators are encouraged to say something like, "Would you like me to watch your dog?" and then take hold of the dog's leash. The owner will go out of sight for three minutes. The dog does not have to stay in position but should not continually bark, whine, or pace unnecessarily, or show anything stronger than mild agitation or nervousness. [color=red]It's not like Shibas are very loyal so another Pass.[/color]
  6. I checked it out. I notice they tar all responsible breeders with the same brush over there too. Apparently, all they breed for is looks and the next Best in Show. Purebred dogs are in trouble due to show breeders. Blah blah blah... I guess they'd manage to find something wrong with my dog too.
  7. He would never pass the CGC test. I always said he'd make a great therapy dog except that he likes to grab your arm in his mouth when he sees you. He also has springs in his legs.
  8. Petfinder scares me. If you are a breeder, you are evil, evil, evil and they'll scream that there's no such thing as a responsible breeder. They make claims like all purebreds are walking genetic disasters and all mutts are healthy, etc, etc... Someone had a dog attack their child and they told her to get rid of the baby. I think a lot of nuts hang out there.
  9. [quote name='Nancy B'] Congratulations!!!!!! :BIG: That's just fabulous! Now as to what to do....you can start by adding Ch Kato to your signature! :D[/quote] His breeder wants me to put a CD on the backend too. BTW, what are all these?? [color=red]Kaliber's Southern Accent CD AX MXJ WAC AD OAC OJC NGC BHIC CGC TDIA[/color]
  10. I don't know. You have to be going to shows every weekend to rack up the points for those shows. Top 5 for Westminster and top 25 for the Eukanuba. Westminster is really awful according to my breeder. If you're on at 8am and you lose, you still have to hang out there for 14 hours letting 25,000 people poke at your dog or get fined by the AKC. Also, she knew the winner 3 months in advance.
  11. Kato went back to back to back and took a 5 point, a 4 point, and a 3 point major so he's done and I don't need to show him anymore unless I want to. Now what do I do?
  12. I was at the Prince William Co. fairgrounds. I haven't shown down in Warrenton. It would be great to meet you. Are you planning on anymore trips to MD? Depending on how he did this weekend (I missed her call last night! :x ) I will probably take him to Howard Co. to pick up his last points or enter him in the breed competition. I think that show is July 3-6 - looks like only herding and obedience trials offered though...
  13. You have to copy and paste it. Something in the URL conflicts with Dogo's BBCode. Or, let me try it with straight HTML... [img]http://sc.msn.com/2F/~Z8+JRFAG{5R1~P{_8[V}O.jpg[/img]
  14. Sure is. Did you go to that show?
  15. I got his picture from the show a couple weeks ago where he took the breed. Notice I cut my head off. [img]http://mywebpages.comcast.net/blancm3/images/bob_mattaponi2.jpg[/img]
  16. [quote name='primabella'] Kiger, your Shiba is absolutly adorable!! Got any other pictures of him? :iloveyou:[/quote] No, none at all... [url]http://mywebpages.comcast.net/blancm3/index.html[/url]
  17. He needs 5 more points and one major. He's down there for 2 more days, but a couple dogs are leaving so it goes down to 4 point majors. We'll see if he can go back to back and come home "Champion Kato."
  18. He knows when I come home so he waits by the window and looks out. He gets a little bored and decides to have a chew. To make it worse, he only chewed one corner of each. Instead of just destroying one sill, he took them both out.
  19. I was kidding about the junk part - the breeder is the one showing him this weekend for me. She knows he's good! A 5 point is the best you can do.
  20. Who took a 5 point major today!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :drinking: :bday:  :BIG: (Yeah, I'm happy.)
  21. They only do it if they are nervous. Only one of mine has ever done it and it was when I first got him. I went to pick him up and startled him. He shot out a stream of pee. Maybe this is where the phrase "scaring the pi$$ out of you" comes from? Here's another neat pet I had. This is big Bubba the Purple Tang: [img]http://mywebpages.comcast.net/blancm3/images/bubba2.jpg[/img] Unfortunately when we moved last year, we couldn't figure out how to move his tank without possibly killing him, so I gave him to another saltwater hobbyist with an even bigger tank. I hope I can get another one assembled one day.
  22. They do like fruit and stuff, but I only give them raisins for snacks. Oh, and I forgot to mention the part where they aim a stream of pee at your eyes if you upset them.
  23. It obviously was a frog with "issues" and therefore commited suicide. :stupid:
  24. Here's one of the evil little creatures now... [img]http://mywebpages.comcast.net/blancm3/images/chewy.jpg[/img]
  25. [quote name='K']how do you cope with all the fresh fruit and veggies and vitamins they need?...I was looking after just one once and it blew my mind the list of requirements and the daily feeding regime was a nightmare.[/quote] Huh? What? No one told me that! They get chinchilla pellets and alfalfa cubes. Nothing else, and they are going on 10 years old. Dern rodents won't die! Are you thinking of a sugar glider maybe? Those critters are hard to feed. And they have a little plastic house with a hole in one side that you add dust to. It mostly stays inside the house. Mostly.
