Awwww fantastic pictures! You must be soooo proud of them.

Update: on the news tonight, a couple from Melbourne (where I live) drove all the way up to the country to donate a purebred Boxer puppy (12 weeks) to the children who just lost theirs. Her name is Kaluha and she is SO cute. And best of all, a working bee has been organised for tomorrow to fix the back fence where Luke escaped from in the first place. A bittersweet ending- it's just sad that it took a dog to die for them to get the fence fixed.

Before I knew my stepmother, she had Afghans- not as dumb as people make them out to be, apparently. :)

Are here more of the Bernese mountain dogs owners?

I think you might be :( Oh well, you can educate US about them!! They are so lovely! :D -
What makes me mad is the people who live in the country who just let there dogs run loose all the time...because they have decided that it is an unspoken rule that it is ok to do this.
I agree with this. It's not safe for the dog, the owners, or the general public. I get so annoyed with people who think it's ok if their dog roams around the city all day, and I don't even have lcattle to worry about. :-? And I do agree that farmers have the right to protect their livestock (which is why the law is there). However I don't think a 10 month old puppy is going to do damage to full grown cattle (calves would be perhaps a different story). And shooting the puppy in a brutal fashion in front of children (well, anyone really) is just barbaric. Oh well... what can you do...

Ellie- the "everyone trusts everyone" mindset is still alive and well in the country. If I lived where they were living I wouldn't think twice about letting my kids go out and play with the dog (sorry, just to clarify, they weren't actually on a walk, the dog had got out of the yard and the kids were going to get him back). You just don't think someone will go and kill a dog that was posing no threat to livestock until it actually happens. :(

I heard this on the radio today. Luke, a 10 month old boxer who lived on a property near Bendigo (country Victoria), had "slipped his chain" and got into a neighbouring paddock stocked with cattle. The 7 and 10 yr old boy owners of Luke ran to get him away from the cattle. The owner of the cattle drove up in his ute and said to the boys, "I'll give you five minutes to get your dog out or I'll shoot him." The boys at this stage (can you imagine being 10 yrs old and hearing that??) were frightened and were calling Luke back, who was on his way back to them, when the man pulled out a shotgun while driving his ute and shot Luke in the leg. Then he shot him in the stomach. Then when Luke fell to the ground he shot him in the head. Got out of the ute and kicked him to make sure he was dead. The children by this stage were hysterical and had run off screaming to their mother, who then called the police, RSPCA, etc. and made a call to the radio and spoke to the RSPCA president. Now the law here in Victoria is that the farmer has the right to destroy any animal on his property harassing his livestock (or soemthing to that effect, where oh where is Shady Lady when I need her). And of course the poor Boxer puppy should have been more securely tied, or something (no points to the owners of this beautiful pup). But I don't think there is anything to excuse the brutality of the man's actions. Especially in front of CHILDREN. I'm disgusted. The RSPCA will investigate a cruelty claim... but it will get nowhere... and shooting an animal on your land "harassing" your livestock is legal... it's so sad...

I think I will dedicate mine to Luke, the 10 mth old Boxer shot in front of his seven and ten year old owners.

I have limited experience with introducing two dogs to living with each other. The experience I had (with bk and rinny) went really well. They knew each other beforehand and had spent almost 2 years hanging out with each other until living together. So the eventual move went swimmingly, though the tussle for alpha went on for some time. There is a fantastic dobermann site somewhere, i will post the address if I can find it.

What K said  some people will never get it and what happens, a boy is attacked and the poor dog demonised, as if it is solely the dog's fault.

ROFL at Dresden  to stray off topic... Rinny would go for BK's throat/neck, being a GSD, and BK would go for his legs, being a cattle dog. Instinct is very hard to breed out!! -
Really this should have been locked a long time ago. There is no intelligent discussion going on any more, it has become personal and that is not what this is about. I say leave the post up cuz it has some very good info in it but really we all need to stop this. DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!!
Yes, that was what I was thinking... shall we lock this thread? yea or nay?

Comments like the above are not welcome here... it is a violation of the rules of conduct of the board (which you may like to read over one day). tata Pitbull Fan... 8)

Taking Dresden for lots of walks in her new suburb is a fantastic idea. I remember when I moved with BK last year he destroyed the side fence and went missing for about 6 hours... I was hysterical and we went searching for 4 hours... he came back though (smart boy!), possibly because I knew he would try and find a way out of the backyard (though I didn't count on him knocking down a 6ft high fence in the 3 hours I was away :-? ), and I took him for hour-long walks every day to get him familiar with the area on the off chance he DID escape. BTW he also escaped the VERY FIRST NIGHT we got him. so he has a chronic history of Houdini-like behaviour (maybe why his former owners abandoned him, or maybe their abandonment triggered seperation anxiety??). Dresden will probably be stressed at the move, but try and make things as home-like as possible. Can you take her over to yor new place before you move? It also helps that you're living with her now (I wasn't living with bk when I moved out, he lives at my dad's). When we moved from out first house to our new house (where dad still is), the dogs were really good about the whole thing- Rinny and BK were perfectly behaved. Rinny was alpha at the time and he had moved a few times before, and BK probably followed his lead- rinny was't anxious, so he wasn't either (besides, it wouldn't do his tough-dog image any good to be seen being a wimp lol). Anyway, I don't know if this helps, but that's my experience.

Awww sorry K and Rowie... maybe I need to get a phone with a camera in it so I can just snap as I "talk" on my "phone". I tell ya though, lucky that golden pup was on a lead otherwise those pigeons would have been in trouble. They really didn't look that concerned though... bet that would chance if I'd brought my monster with me.

I thought of both of you today when I was out for lunch. There was a female Staff outside where we were eating and a Golden Retriever puppy (about 4 months, maybe). Soooo cute. He was just staring at these pigeons with such intensity. The Staffy was so friendly and she was an oldie- grey at the muzzle. Gorgeous.
