I am not a fan of gentle leaders. Most people I know who have tried training with a gentle leader have dogs that behave well with them on, but pull like crazy if they are using a regular collar. I alternate between a Premier (martingale-type collar) and a pinch collar w/ Dex. You want to make your dog focus on YOU, not on the cat, dog, squirrel. Obviously this is much easier said than done. It takes a long time and is very frustrating but keep at it. Another thing that might help is to let your dog carry his favorite toy in his mouth. Sometimes this gives the dog something to focus on, and can help your dog not pay attention to other distractions. By using treats, praise, etc. you should see some results. If your dog ignores the treats and starts lunging at other dogs, hide the treat. Dex has gotten better. He used to act the fool anytime he saw another dog even if it was a block away. I have desensitized him to a distance of around 15-20 feet. Now, if he starts acting up, I can give him a correction (with the martingale) and a grunt, and he gets the point that I am not thrilled with his behavior. Good luck, and keep at it. Dont be put off by ignorant people who view pinch collars as cruel torture devices. Let them think what they want, you are the one doing what it takes to have a well-behaved dog.

Dog lover, lmao at the wombat lover parking sign. Primrose there are a million threads that discuss responsible breeders, and what constitutes a responsible breeder. Cant you just go away and annoy other people instead of just going round and round in circles here? Have you ever posted on a thread about anything except to knock pitbulls, their owners, or the pictures they decide to post? If you dont want to post on threads about dog farts that is fine. I have yet to see a post where you congratulate someone for doing a good job for something. Your negativity here obviously has not gone unnoticed. WE ALL KNOW THAT THE FUTURE OF THE AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER IS NOT LOOKING GOOD. THERE HAVE BEEN A MILLION OTHER THREADS RANTING ABOUT IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS, BREEDERS, DOG FIGHTERS, etc. That being said, you have def. said some things I agree with. Unfortunately your sliver of intelligence gets lost within all of your nonsensical posts. -
It's interesting how location plays into ones perception of a "rare" breed. My neighborhood has lots of Vizslas. My good friend's boss has two Pulis, I have never seen any other ones around. I have only seen one Dogo Argentina, very impressive looking dog.

Kira is the same way. In fact, like other Northern breeds she actually prefers to grab me by the wrist and walk me through the house. It's basically a sign of affection. It is pretty cute to watch her grab a Kong and start wiggling around with happiness that Daddy has come home.
I'm curious. What breed of dogs and what experiences do I need to have had in the past to post on which topics here? I may not qualify! I've left gates open, crate doors open, let a dog get loose, failed to keep a dog from killing a cat and had some dog fights. Oh well... Carla
Well, you can start with a better attempt at sarcasm. edit- In case your post wasnt meant to be sarcastic, you will see that we have members with all kinds of breeds and experience. The reason everyone jumped down Prim's throat is that she has made it a habit to annoy people by posting on any thread with the word pibull in it when her experience with pitties is just regurgitating info said by other people. Not only that, but she enjoys focusing on ridiculous things while not appluading the good posts people make re: pits. -
Ever been GLAD your dog bit someone?

You guys are correct. Not to split hairs here, but in the case of an emergency (maintenance, etc.) landlords are not required to give any notice before entering. -
Pet Peeves or funny things your Dogs do
drjeffrock replied to xavierandrea's topic in Everything about dogs
Hehehe, where do I begin? Ok, annoying things my Akita does. If I am pecking away on the computer and she wants something she will come sit next to me and just start staring. I think she believes that she can burn a hole through me if she stares long enough. If I dont give him, she will toss a paw on my thigh to tell me "Get off the computer and pay attention to me." Kira is actually a great dog and doesnt enjoy annoying the world. Dex on the other hand does whatever he has to to get attention. When he is ignored, he will go grab a sock or Christine's underwear to get my attention. On weekdays I get up at 5:30 to walk him. On weekends he wakes up at 6:00 and wants to get the day started. Oh, and when I get back from our 5:30 walk both dogs decide its great fun to start horsing around and acting like boneheads. Hehe, its quite a scene, Christine sleeping in bed to suddenly hear "ROOOOAAARR" and the two of them shadow-boxing. -

Anyhow, according to her I am doing my breeds a disservice by posting a pic in my sig of them cuddling. I hope people dont run out and get a pit and an Akita just cause they see them cuddling in my sig
Yes, Drjeff...... how could you BE so freakin irresponsible?!?!?!?! Shame on you young man!! :D Debby
Well, lets not stop there! Let me continue being an irresponsible bully owner. Check out this album for more cuddle pics! http://share.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=EeAN2Tdq0cOGjE2g DISCLAIMER: Per Primrose's request please understand that in general an Akita and an APBT might not act like two peas in a pod like mine do. Just cause mine get along now, doesnt mean they always will, and dont just expect your Akita and pitbull to love each other to death. -
I am SO over this... The very fact that primrose refuses to discuss her own dogs PROVES that she is only here to argue... Seriously... Someone please make it STOP!!! I know a troll when I see one... Be it an intelligent troll who knows how to not break the rules, but STILL cause unnecessary trouble. I am over it! I am not saying this just because I am a pit bull owner. I am not saying this just because I disagree with her. I disagree with a lot of people on this forum on different subjects. I want her gone because she has made it clear from day one that she is only here to cause problems. Every single topic that has the word pit bull in it anywhere turns into huge thread that is all bickering and fighting.... I for one can't take it anymore! :x
I agree. Can you imagine if the thread named "Ever glad your dog bit someone" had a mention to pitbulls? Prim would be all over it. Anyhow, according to her I am doing my breeds a disservice by posting a pic in my sig of them cuddling. I hope people dont run out and get a pit and an Akita just cause they see them cuddling in my sig. And as to the AKC standard requiring Akitas to be aggressive towards other dogs, I would not really make a big stink over it. I have NEVER seen a judge not give an Akita BIS because they were not dog-agressive enough. This thread has really gone down in flames. Although the title was sarcastic, perhaps Cheekymunkee was attempting to show that not all pitbulls immediately try to attack every animal in sight. To split hairs and say that it is not right to post pics of pits getting along with other dogs/cats/whatever is ludicrous. Instead of pointing out how this thread might mislead people, perhaps Prim could give a thumbs up to all the other billion threads stating that pits, in general, are dog-aggressive and that they should be seperated if not closely supervised. I havent seen that happen, which leads me to believe that Prim enjoys to start isht over nothing. -

Well, the Petco by my house doesnt really carry any top quality foods. The best brand my local Petco carries is Solid Gold, which is decent, but not as good as Innova, Canidae or Wellness. I havent set foot in a Petco for quite some time now.

A little Doggie Rant (no offense to small dog owners)
drjeffrock replied to Sharpeigirl's topic in Everything about dogs
My neighbor has a little Chihuahua named Lulu that constantly snaps, lunges and growls at people. Of course she just laughs, EVEN the people that it lunges at kind of chuckle. I just dont understand it. If my dogs lunged and snapped at every neighbor I have, they would assemble a mob and come hang me. Do I dislike every small dog because some of theme have irresponsible owners? Certainly not. I am a huge fan of poms, chihuahuas, rat terriers among others. I will say this though: when it comes to chihuahuas and poms, of the 50 or so I have been around, maybe 10 were trained in basic obedience, which def. is a huge disparity among people I know with working or certain bully breeds. No need to take offense, we are chastising irresponsible owners, not small dogs. -
Welcome to the forum pitbulletta! My local pet store hosts shelter and rescue adoptions every weekend. Needless to say, they dont sell dogs. One pet store in my local mall does sell dogs and it is heart-breaking every time I walk by. Christine and I walked by a couple months ago and saw... an Akita puppy. Poor dog had just gotten in that day from Maryland and was so scared. Poor girl was shaking like crazy. We played with her for a few minutes, I started grilling the "salesperson" with questions. The person did not know their butt from a hole in the ground, and was only interested in making a sale, as they got a commission. The price of the Akita you ask? $1500 :eek3: A lot of people think that we are just preaching about not buying from puppymill breeders, but its with good cause. My neighbor bought two dogs from that pet store. A pomeranian who suffers from a luxating patella and also slight elbow dysplasia. His other dog, a rat terrier, died of some disease, but I cant remember which one for the life of me. And with regards to PETA, they prefer lining their coffers with money to be used in their legal defense and to support organizations (including terrorists) instead of spending it on on the animals that really need it. Dont forget, if PETA had their way, every single one of us would not be allowed to have a dog as a pet. Heck, in their eyes dogs helping disabled people should not be allowed.

Yikes. :o What a rude person. I am not a fan of the sloped back at all. I wouldnt be surprised if her "perfect" dog has never herded anything in its life. I dont really respect the AKC much either. If I were to buy a dog for a working purpose, I would not be concerned with conformation titles.
