1.
i've been a loyal client of the brentwood pet clinic (www.brentwoodpetclinic.com, but the site is currently down) for the past 4 years. (11718 west olympic blvd) they have a total of 5 vets on staff, each of them does general practice but also specializes in a particular field. dr. olds for example is an excellent orthopedic surgeon and was able to save my cat's leg from being amputated after an accident against all odds. the vet at the emergency clinic i took her to wanted to amputate immediately, but i decided to just let them stabilize her and make her comfortable until i coud bring her to see him the next day. it was a long process and took 2 surgeries, but in the end it all worked out. a friend of mine highly recommends the "dog and cat hospital" in santa monica (2010 broadway). i'd go there if i couldn't get to my regular vet for some reason. neither of these are holistic vets tho. i've been poking around on that topic myself a little, because i prefer the holistic approach. i just recently discovered that jean dodds has her office in santa monica (938 stanford street). she is absolutely top-notch (look for her publications), but i don't know how hard it would be to get an appointment or if she even acepts routine patients. i saw a banner for a holistic vet clinic that opened recently, i think on la cienega west of pico somewhere, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.
Thanks for the info TDG. Do you happen to remember the name of the holistic vet clinic on La Cienega. Was it maybe Century Veterinary Group? There is a vet on La Cienega (around Venice) named Dr. Jeff Werber and I have heard lots of great things about him. Thanks again for the info. -Jeff
2. BUMP! C'mon guys. Crested's babies are very cute, but I need some input on getting Dex something warm for when it's cold out. Please help!
3. Interesting. Funny thing is I am pretty sure that Frontline is made in France, not even in the good ol' U.S.A. Anyhow, it is ridiculous how much these meds are marked up. I am lucky enough to have an account w/ a pet supply wholeseller. I get a 6 mo. supply of Frontline plus (83 lbs+) and it costs me less than $29 . I become pretty popular w/ friends when their flea meds run out. edit- I just checked out the site, and the prices seem pretty reasonable. If the meds are authentic, it looks great 8)
4. Hey Eric- How old is your APBT? I have no clue about the best age to crop, my vets are completely against cropping. I am assuming the younger the better. I think cropped ears look impressive, but I would never subject my dogs to it. I rescued Dex and his ears were already cropped. Whoever cropped his ears must ahve done a basement job, lots of scar tissue. He is pretty sensitive to people touching his ears aside from me and my old lady.
5.
i'm on the west side. marina del rey/culver city/venice area. i too like the jindos, but they aren't a breed that would suit my lifestyle. i like to take my dog on road trips, camping, hiking etc. and wouldn't want to have to worry about prey drive/aggression/being territorial, especially in unfamiliar areas.
Cool. I used to live in the Beverlywood area (Pico and Robertson.) TDG, can you recommend a good vet in your area? I currently go to Kenneth Jones, located on the corner of Olympic and 17th Street. My main problem is that there are so many vets there it seems as though I am never seeing the same person. Also, I wanted to try to find a vet that has knowledge in holistic healing. I an not unhappy with my vet, but I wouldnt mind checking out some alternatives. Thanks for any suggestions! -Jeff
6.
here in the L.A. area, they are fairly common,
Hey TDG, where in Los Angeles are you? I have a couple Korean friends who have Jindos. I would agree they do have a high-prey drive, and I have seen a surprising number of them in local shelters.

Paw troubles

Where exactly are the cuts? Are they in between the toes, or on the pads? Perhaps you might want to try soaking the paw in some warm water w/ epsom salt. My Akita sliced up her pad pretty badly, and I soaked it in Epsom salt, and it healed within about a week or so.
8.
What are some activities pits are good at .
Sleeping, cuddling, eating, and finding the most the most cushioned place in the house to park their butts. Welcome to the forum, we would love to see pics of your pittie. Good advice has been given so far, I cant over emphasize how important it is to let your dog mature, before exercising strenuously.

10. LOL, I will never forget when Dex did it for the first time. I was cooking something, and out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw some greenish-red thing fly through the air, then BANG it knocked over some CD's on my desk. Haha, it was pretty funny.
11. Oh Kira drives me up the wall. She is a psycho about keeping herself clean. The other night I almost lost my mind, she was licking away at 2am (I had to wake up at 5) and finally she stopped. I took a deep breath and thanked the lord for letting me go back to sleep. She got up, went over to Dexter as he is sleeping, and SLURP, SLURP, SLURP. LOL, he is very, very dirty and never cleans himself. Thank goodness we have Kira around  (xcept at 2am, hehe.)
12.
Off the topic of dogs, we have had a vet tech think our rabbit was a cat! Never went back to that vet ever again! :o
LOL, I will steer clear of that vet too.
13. In the spirit of things, I am far away from 500, so I better get to posting. :B-fly:
14. Okay, I am assuming you are talking about conformation. It doesnt matter to me, I will explain. The fact that my Akita has never hunted Bears or Boars makes no difference to me (Joe Blow the average pet owner). What is more important to me is her temperament, health issues, etc. With Dex, he has not proven himself at fighting with other dogs, and I plan on keeping it that way. I dont really think super highly of many so-called Champions and kennel clubs, and I dont think a hunter looking for the perfect retreiver would base his opinion on a dogs conformation title.
15. Congrats you guys! Like everyone else, I am looking forward to pics. :D
16. Judy, you are absolutely correct. I agree it would be irresponsible to not check out the genetics before breeding. I guess I should have clarified this better in my previous posts  I have a friend who was looking to buy an Akita. I tried and tried to get him to look into some rescues, but he decided he wanted a young puppy. He showed me some prospective litters and when I researched the sire and dam (who had excellent hips) I saw quite a few problems with regards to siblings and off-spring with HD. So, i convinced him to look elsewhere.
17. Judy, I dont doubt that most offspring from two OFA-fair parents would be fine. Of course two OFA-excellent dogs could produce a litter w/ hip dysplasia. You could also breed two OFA-fair hips and get disastrous results. I still stand by my statement that I would never purchase a dog from a breeder who breeds OFA-fair dogs. To each their own, I am sure you carefully research your dogs siblings/offspring, etc. before you breed, but it is just not for me.
18. I just browsed the site quickly. This is just my opinion, but I would avoid breeders like the plague who breed OFA "fair" dogs. OFA should be AT LEAST good, if not excellent.
19. Geez, I could write for days about the questions people have asked me. Here's a couple great ones: Is she (Kira) part dalmation? (Cause of the spots on her legs.) One guy kept arguing with me that Kira was a Siberian Husky. He said "No, no, no I am CERTAIN she is a husky. I used to own 5 of them!" My response was "Are you sure you have never owned an Akita?" Here's another, "Hey do you want to breed your pibull?" My answer: "No, his temperament is questionable, and he is neutered." His answer, "But we could make so much money breeding him." :agrue:
20. Hi Cindy- Welcome to the forum. We all love our dogs the same, whether they be pure-bred or mixed. I have no Shibas, but my girlfriend and I do have an Akita. I know a few Shibas, and they are all characters, to say the least!
21. What a beautiful pup! RNP you are a brave man. LOL, I feel like sometimes I can barely keep my head above water with my two pooches. Best of luck, and sorry I cant be any use for names.
22. I would not alternate between different kibbles every few days. Perhaps every couple months, but not every other day.
23. Hahaha, those are some great pics! Yes, I would love to see the their hats! I am going to bug Christine to perhaps knit Dex a sweater. She just learned how to knit, so maybe she will be into it. :D
24.
Have you ever done clothes for your two yourself? ;-) I think that's the best way actually. I made one for Bella from a sleaf and I've made a cloak for Ben from jeans. And it's not that difficult. Want to see pics? ;-)
I wold LOVE to see some pics. Crested, I thought about you the other day. There is a breeder in Arizona who has done some wonderful things with Akitas. Their Akitas are spectacular. Guess what they also breed... You got it, Chinese Cresteds! Here is a link if you want to see some pics of their cresteds. http://www.tamarlane.com
25. Hey guys, I need some help here. I wanted to get Dex some type of sweater. Unfortunately I have not found anything good for him. My girlfriend and I bought a couple sweaters, but they dont fit him properly. His chest is too broad for the sweaters I bought. Anyone know of any good websites that have clothing for larger dogs? Thanks for any replies!
