4. Hey vstar- Awesome pup! Your bike looks tits too! I might be purchasing a Yamaha myself. Hehehe, forget about comfort, I want the 2004 R1! This is my favorite pic.
5.
I can't really place much blame on the rott owner because the dog didn't appear viscious, he didn't show any aggression toward any people or other dogs and didn't let go of the little grey hound when he was told, but he was playing and probably doesn't realize that he can't play with a little dog that rough.
Well, I dont want to preach, but I have heard this a million times. "Well, he has never been aggressive with other dogs, etc." IMHO, you are rolling the dice when you let dog-aggressive breeds play in parks off-leash. Just cause they have always been friendly, doesnt mean that something wont happen in the future. I hope the greyhound is ok, and it isnt serious. I would love to see some pics of your pittie if you have any ! :D
6.
Thank you for the Akita website. I added a message to their forum. What I am most concerned with is the vet I am taking my dog to. I am actually verey familiar with the surgery - metal plate - and I do know a specialist in Houston. BUT I heard of Dr Hulse and he would be a lot closer. I just need some info on him and the dogs he had operated on. Is there a website that gives info like that??? Thanks
I am not sure, but I would assume there is some type of governing body for vets with regards to surgery and their credentials. From what I have noticed, one of the most important and overlooked area of ACL surgery is the rehabiliation AFTER the surgery. It is not uncommon for dogs to tear their ACL in their other legs while recovering. In fact, someone on the akita forum recently had a ACL surgery done, and during the first few weeks of recovery, the akita slipped out of its collar, got excited and hopped around, and tore another ACL. I am sure people will post up with much useful info.

Akita Mania!
LOL :) Don't want anyone to forget about the Akitas, now do we?
Hehehehe, just wanted to bump in case we have some bashful Akita owners or lovers.
8. Hello, Sorry to hear that your pooch needs surgery. You can try posting on the akita messageboard I frequent, www.akitaforum.com There are quite a few members on that board that have gone through both the tplo and the other surgery. I am sure everyone would be happy to give you more info and possibly a referal in your area. Good luck! -Jeff
9. I have been thinking about doing something similar myself. I guess the wood would be ok if the food was being used within a week. In my case, I have decided to go with a plastic air tight container, so the food doesnt go stale. It takes my dogs 3 weeks or so to go through a 33 lb. bag.

Akita Mania!

11. Thanks for the heads-up. This info could be quite useful for anyone out there who did not know of the toxicity of chocolate. On a side note, I have a funny story about chocolate. My mom is French and my father American. When my parents first got engaged, they went to France so my pops could meet his future in-laws. He brought my grandmother (his mother in-law) a big box of Godiva truffles and chocolates. My grandmother said "Oh, thank you so much!" She then proceded to give her dog some of them in front of my dad, LOL. It became a joke in our family how my grammies dogs always get the best!
12.
I watched the last three groups (cuz I MISSED the Akita and the whole Working Group cuz my newpaper LIED to me in case no one noticed my other posts about that ;)) with my kitten, Scooter. I wish I could remember which dog had him going. Watched the whole thing, but one dog came on and Scooter got all alert and cautious... I can't remember which. Hmm... Funny though :) That's funny about Kira demanding the treat :) My avatar was the result of me hholding a treat over the camera. It looks how I wanted it to, but it took me forever to get it! She was so impatient, she kept pointing her nose up, putting her ears back and woo-wooing at me to give her the bone! All I wanted was a brief tail wagging, you wouldn't think it'd be so hard ;)
Haha, I missed those posts. I must say that the newfie Josh looked really good. Your avatar rocks. I wonder how they would act if I put a treat above the camera. The woo-wooing is the best. I say that Kira sounds like Chewbaca (sp?) when she starts arr-oo-ing. -Did you get to see pics of Remy?
13. Hi Julie- Welcome to the forum. How about some pics of your pooches?
14. What an eventful dog show! We watched the dog show, and Dex was staring down all the competition. He barked at a couple of the dogs, which Christine and I found humorous. I guess he really dislikes Portugese water dogs, because the Portugese came on screen, and Dex jumped OVER Kira and barreled into our TV. I swear it looked like he was trying out for the long jump team, lol. Thank goodness the TV did not fall or come crashing down. Anyhow, Christine got inspired by the show, so she decided to do "show" me our dogs. She started w/ Kira. LOL, she got a couple treats in her hand, and said "The Akita" Then she trotted around our living room with Kira on a lead. Kira refused to stack for us, LOL. She saw the treats in her hand, and kept sitting to try to get the treats, hahaha. This should have been a precursor to our "show." So, then Christine decided to "show" Dexter." So much for political correctness. She says "Theeeee Pitbull." As she starts to trot around w/ Dex he got so excited he started jumping up and pulled on Christine so hard he tripped her and she fell flat on her face, LOL. I could not help but to LOL, and Christine is saying "My ankle, my ankle." Thank goodness she was ok, but I thought it was very funny. We have decided to retire Dex from the show ring after that event, hahaha
15. Ya, its unfortunate how many ads I see regarding pets that need new homes due to their owners moving to a place that doesnt allow animals. It took A TREMENDOUS amount of time and effort for me to find a place that would allow not only one, but two big dogs. You have to improvise sometimes. LOL, when I was asked what kind of dogs I had I would say "An Akita, and a terrier mix." I would rather be homeless than give up my dogs.
16. Kira is not interested in the tv at all. Surprisingly the only time I have ever seen her watch TV is when we were watching a program on bears. She heard the bear roar and she immediately stood up (along with the hair on her back.) Dexter LOVES tv. His favorite shows are the Golden Girls and golf tournaments, LOL. He will bark when he sees dogs on tv. He gets very agitated when he hears dogs barking on the boob tube. He will run up to the screen and stare for a second. Then he looks behind the TV for a few seconds. Then he runs into the bedroom thinking he is going to find that dirty dog that is invading his home, hahaha.
17. LOL. I am either a giraffe or a sable. I am going to choose giraffe, as I am 6 feet 4, and my name is Jeff. Those of you in the U.S. who have heard of Toys R Us will know Geoffrey the giraffe, which was a nickname of mine for a while
18. Done! I voted. Make sure to vote for Kira too. She will be in that contest the week of Feb. 16
19. Here is Dex's page: http://www.dogster.com/dog_page.php?i=725 Kira will have one soon!
20.
Kiger, I know exactly how you feel. When Indy is blowing his coat it's a never-ending source of fur. I can keep brushing the same spot for 15 minutes and still keep getting massive wads of fur off him. Once I have brushed him I look like the abominable fur monster - I usually have to vacuum myself. :-?
LOL, I feel your pain. To top it all off, I have Dexter sitting next to me watching the process. When I am not looking he will try to EAT the pile of hair. :eating:
21. Thank god my PS2 has not yet been victimized by Dexter. He did manage to run full speed into a solid wood entertainment stand and seroiusly damage one side of it, LOL. I had to throw it away as it looked like it was going to cave in at any second.
22.
That's nothing. I have 4 more piles just as big that I collected in a plastic bag. Think I'll make a pillow.
Ahhhh, good times! I always stare in amazement at the pile of hair from my Akita when she sheds.
23. As long as there are suckers out there paying thousands of dollars for a mutt, this unfortunate situation will continue. I recently got kicked off a forum after my first post. I usually dont troll around, but I found a messageboard that "celebrated the creation of new breeds." Some clueless lady was saying that she was interested in breeding her dalmation to one of 7 different breeds. I dont remember the breeds but I got extremely pissed when she asked "What makes a breeder responsible? Is is that you make sure you get the puppies all their shots and papers?" I had to lay into her. Anyhow, dont get me wrong. I love mutts, but its irks me when I think of all the poor dogs in shelters that need homes. OK, I am done ranting for the day! :agrue: Kiger- Your Sheba is beautiful !!!!! :iloveyou: edit- The lady who asked the breeding question does have a website and did think of herself as a breeder of cross-breeds. I would not lay into someone who was just asking a simple questions. :D
24. Hey Starfox- I got Dex from the West L.A. animal shelter on Bundy. Christine and I had been searching for a month or so for a second dog. We walked in and saw Dexter. He immediately came up to us and was like "PLEASE, PLEASE take me home with you!!" We could not resist. :D
25.
Amaya's been extremely good about chewing - until recently. She destroyed a $80 headset, hat, cup, and has stopped wanting to potty outside. She has PLENTY of toys. She has 3 balls, 2 sqeekys, 1 weird toy, 1 rope, 1 new huge bone.. And she always has a bone! She LOVES her bone.. And a leg from a stuffed animal.. and her stuffed animal! She always chews on her bone or brings her ball to play. She plays a lot... And I have no idea what started this chewing spree this passed week! Same with housebreaking. She did really good last month, now she barely goes outside anymore! The carpet is bright yellow and we just washed all the previous stains out not even a month ago.. She's 7 months old. So she's not in a teenager stage.. I just don't get whats going on! Please help!
Sorry to hear about Amaya's troubles. Here is my advice for what its worh (probably not very much, LOL.) When we first got Dex he refused to pee outside. I guess he was trained by his previous owner to pee on mats inside. I overcame this by doing a few things. First off, I would take him on many, many walks. When he did pee outside, I would dance, praise him and sing at the top of my lungs. Often he did not want to pee outside, it was like he would hold it till he got back inside. Anyhow, when he refused to go outside, I would bring him back inside give him plenty of water, and put him back in his kennel for an hour or two. Then, back outside till he peed. After a while he figured out that he was supposed to pee outside. It took a while for him to learn. It's like you take two steps forward, and one step back. With regards to chewing, I dont know what to say. Is Amaya exercised regularly? I know that Dex will chew on things when he is bored, or has too much energy. He is a completely different dog when he has had vigorous exercise. Good luck! -Jeff
