Uday, sounds like you are setting youself up for a tragedy. IT DOESNT MATTER THAT YOUR PIT HAS BEEN FINE WITH FRIENDS DOGS. It still amazes me when I hear about pit owners thinking its no big deal to leave their dogs alone and unsupervised with other animals. My dogs get along great like two peas in a pod. That being said, I would NEVER leave them alone together. Uday, please reconsider leaving your dog alone with other dogs. All it takes is a funny look, both of the dogs trying to drink water at the same time, whatever. Fights can and do happen, and I am sure that you would not want to come home to a pic of what K posted. Had a similar situation on another forum a while ago. A noob pit owner said he did not think it was a big deal to leave pits together alone. Two weeks after posting that, he said he took it back. His "breeder" left two bitches alone (one was pregnant) along with a male and the breeder came home to 2 dead dogs and one seriously injured one. DO NOT EVER TRUST YOUR DOG NOT TO FIGHT WITH ANOTHER DOG!

Yup, Dex can clear a room out with his farts. Its so funny, cause he will let one go, then he turns and checks out his bum kind of like "Where did that come from??" Hahaha, his favorite place to rip one is in our elevator. I cant tell you how many times I have gotten out of the elevator as someone is getting in. They probably think its me  Kira is very lady like, and will let out an occasional belch, but she doesnt fart anywhere near as much as Dexter.

Hahaha, I def. understand where you are coming from. We feed the dogs at 6:30 every night, and they start getting rather ornery if 6:30 passes w/out dinner. Dex is a total ham. God forbid that we feed Kira while he is in his kennel, he will whine and yodel til its his turn to eat. On a side note, Dex has just learned what "dinner" means. It is his new favorite word

A pretty yucky question for small dog owners...

:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o Talk about Murphy's Law taking effect!!!!!! Kira just "shmeckled" for the first time today, aside from the normal drips after poo. I could not believe it, never in 7 years has she let them go. I thought it was Dex, the usual suspect. But it didnt take long to find out it was Kira. Oh boy, I dont think expressing her glands will be as easy as Dexter. Not that she would bite, but I know she is gonna wriggle around like crazy and freak out. Maybe its time to do the switch over to RMB and such. I still worry a little about intestinal problems from not chewing the bones up before swallowing. Stay tuned for an update... -
Very cute. The vid worked from me. Yay Scoobie! :bday:

By the way, some pitbulls are GENETICALLY PREDISPOSED to have temperament issues
Would you care to cite the SCIENCE for that as your nickname implies at least some sort of degree?
I dont feel the need to quote any "science." I have been around plenty of APBT's in the past 27 years to know this from observation, NOT from reading some study or from word of mouth. (Like your statement in the other thread about talking to doberman owners.) Dont believe everything you read, or every owner you talk to. I prefer to rely on empirical evidence than something somebody says.
Ok I really think this topic should be locked.
I agree, here's my vote.
A pretty yucky question for small dog owners...
drjeffrock replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
Ha, I even have a name for it, the process of "de-shmeckling." I just made up the word as I thought it sounded kinda right. He is such a dirty boy, he never cleans himself  . The only time he ever licks his bum is after he shmeckels. Sorry if I am grossing anyone out. -
Good advice! If Dex is in the process of chewing a sock (or about to pick up a sock) I will just grab whatever is closest to me and act very interested in it. Dex immediately has to come over to see what is so interesting  and forgets all about the sock. I still think that certain dogs can benefit from a correction every so often (water from squirt gun, etc.) but it must be done at the right time or it is useless.

Hi Eileen- I never replied to your questions on your intro thread. So, I have a 7 year old Akita named Kira, and a 1.5 year old American Pit Bull terrier (APBT) named Dexter. Yes my girlfriend and I are psychos who like to bake our dogs birthday cakes :stupid: Ok, now to the problem at hand. Dexter is a chewer also. It doesnt matter if its shoes, socks, panties, whatever. The only real success I have at getting him to stop this behavior is to make sure he is well-exercised. When I take him on strenuous hikes, he doesnt have the energy to misbehave. Working him out makes a HUGE difference in his behavior. Wish I had more advice, but thats it.
all you had to do was inform him that the ONLY way pit bulls etc get mean are because their owners make them that way. Or that "to those of us who love xxxxxxbreedhere they are the most beautiful dogs! We find other breeds sortof unpretty compared! But please dont say it that way its sortof insultin". Instead you all went off on attacks, tirades and idiocy. If you want to educate people about animals, dogs in particular, you should consider that it might be much easier if you dont equate them with hitler for not using the sites particular politically correct speech.
Hi Charles, and welcome to the forum. Sorry, but I find the attack, idiocy and tirades started with the original post. I dont feel bad about anyones replies in this thread. Had rabidpoodle stated her question more properly, I can assure you that the responses would be different too.By the way, some pitbulls are GENETICALLY PREDISPOSED to have temperament issues, its not always the owner who makes them mean. Although 8 times out of 10 it problems do arise from lack of socialization (or abuse/neglect/etc,) it would be foolish to overlook the breeding of dogs that have no business being bred. I hope you stick around. We are all good people, and there is a heck of a lot of knowledgeable people and good advice to be gained. -Jeff
Have you tried contacting a holistic vet to help you with this problem??? I find some times they can recommend deitary changes and supplements which will help out with anal gland problems.
YOu know, I have been looking for a holistic vet for sometime, with no luck yet  Hehehe, TDG prepare yourself for a PM from me  My poor vet. THe first time I saw that Dex was having problems (scooting around, etc.) I took him to the vet to show me how to empty them from the inside. One thing leads to another and SQUIRT! All over his shirt  It is quite the scene if anyone were to witness Christine and I emptying his sacs. I hop in the bathtub with Dex and hold him by his neck/collar. I convinced Christine to do the actual insertion. After all, Dex is sooooo strong and she needs me to hold him for dear life  Hehe, I dunno how I weasled her into doing it. I am holding him and asking her "Did you get it? Did you get one side? Did you get both sides?" She started yelling at me "SHUT UP!! YOu will know when they are done." LOL, she was right. THe first time she did it, she got one side done, and she couldnt take it. She ran out of the bathroom leaving me and Dex in the tub as the smell was just sitting there (as our bathroom and shower are enclosed in glass doors.) I was hollering "Baby be strong. Come back!" It was really funny. Now, we are much more proficient at getting it done. -

Good point Cassie, quite often a change in diet can help solve the problem. Unfortunately thats not the case for poor Dex  -
This is insane. I can see me now telling the butcher, 'Yep, gonna eat those bones myself! Give me those yummy bones please. The bigger the better, give my teeth a real workout, won't even have to brush as often!' .
LOL, I was thinking the same thing. Just pretend you are some crazy carnivore. :evilbat: One would think that the legislators time could be better spent on other issues. :stupid:

A pretty yucky question for small dog owners...
drjeffrock replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
Ah yes! The topic of anal glands. The color can differ from a creamy white paste, to a filthy brownish/black liquid. I think that anal gland juice should be used as chemical warfare, I cant think of anything more putrid smelling. :boom: Dex constantly has anal gland problems, I have to empty his sacs out every couple weeks, otherwise he lets it go on the couch, floor, Christine's sweatpants, etc. I have found it to be much, much easier when you do it from the inside (meaning you stick your finger in the bum.) I have considered the surgery to remove them, however I dont think it would be wise of me to risk incontinence unless his health is in jeopardy. Any of you guys have any recommendations of cleaning products to help remove the juices? -
It is important to keep your dog guessing. I would not treat every single time your pooch does something right. Basically, my opinion is that when it comes to rewarding, you should give the lowest valued treat that will work the majority of the time. This could be a pat on the head, scratching or a little treat. However, that being said sometimes Dex gets the mother of all treats (a cut up hotdog or some boiled chicken.) I do this to keep him guessing, wondering whats coming next. Sometimes he gets a pat on the head and a "good boy", other times he gets a cut up hotdog, and still other times he gets to play with his rope or another toy. Still other times he just gets an ear to ear grin from me. In a sense, my reaction to him can be a reward sometimes. Oppositely, if I am displeased with something he does, I can just frown, grunt and shake my head sometimes w/out a physical correction.

I vote to ban him too. It is pretty obvious that RNP has no intentions of explaining what's going on (not that he is obligated to.) What angers most of us here is that he has been full of isht. He has talked, and talked and talked about bettering the APBT breed and this and that and this and that. I personally cannot stand liars. If you wanna be a BYB and stud your dog, thats your choice. There is no law here saying that you cant do so. I love the broad spectrum of people that post on here. Lots of great info, and lots of cool people from all over the world. If someone had a personal vendetta against me, and all this was going down, you guys would be the first to hear my story. I would do ANYTHING I had to do to show you guys that it was simply not true. Sorry to any mods who feel burned about this whole situation. Please dont leave over something as silly as his lies. You guys do a great job of running the board. So, I vote to ban him. I dont care, and dont want to hear any more explanations of what happened. What he is doing goes on all throughout the world, however to deceive people about it and flat out lie to them is a just as big an offense in my opinion.
