here's a good site with info about bloat. It freaks the h*ll out of me too. Akitas are prone to bloat. http://www.globalspan.net/bloat.htm

Do most of you clip your dogs' toenails yourself?
drjeffrock replied to JackieMaya's topic in Everything about dogs
Christine and I first start off by clipping Kira's toenails, then we use a dremel. We are lucky that Dex's nails stay pretty short from grinding against concrete during walks. He cant stand the dremel and wont get anywhere near it! Here is a pic of Miss Kira showing that she has had enough of the dremel. She is pretty good, lets us do it without any problems. LOL, this day though she had enough. -
Look at that face!!! I swear that puppy could kill my parents and I would not be able to stay mad at him. He sure is a looker, a very big congrats!!

Well a big congratulations to Jackie. Now she can join Kira on Kipper's Hall of Fame, lol.

Ok, here is a close up pic... Doesnt it look like the teeth are waaay too close together? Geez, it almost looks like it just tears the fur to thin it out as opposed to just getting down to the undercoat. Kinda like those shedding blades, which are more trouble than they are worth imo.
-
Anybody heard of this or use it? I use one of those regular rake-type brushes for Kira when she is shedding. A couple people on other boards highly recommend these. Any input dogomaniacs? It sure doesnt look cheap. Dexter has an Avid chip. However... thank goodness my vet noticed this. When he was microchipped at the pound, they gave him the wrong tag that does not match up with his chip number. My vet happened to scan him for whatever reason, and noticed that the ID # of the chip did not match the ID # and registration info that I had. Had he got lost, they would have contacted the owner of some other dog that had been chipped the same day at the shelter. So, bottom line is... next time you go to your vet, have them scan your pet and make sure all the info matches up with the database.
Actually, the dog in the second test is a Colby bred dog... Which means it is VERY well bred. He is actually quite a good looking dog. You are all talking about the #16 dog, right?
Hi hmmmmmmm, it's been a while since I have seen you post. Hope all is well. Colby or not, I am def. not feeling that dog. JMHO but I have seen some colby-bred APBTs I was not impressed with. On the other hand, a lot of the COlby-bred pitties I have seen knocked my socks off, and were extremely impressive. Perhaps I might feel differently if I saw the dog as an adult (or some better pics,) but I doubt it. Glad to see you are still lurking around :)
i think the pit bull in the 2nd one is actually well bred, just not what people are use to seeing(cause people arent use to seeing well bred pit bulls..)
I 100% disagree. That APBT is poorly bred. When it comes to current perceptions of pitbulls, lots of people imagine blue, mastiff looking dogs.

Got it right on the first try with no problems. LOL, I guess when it's one of your favorite breeds it jumps right out at you. Here is another one that is a bit tougher, partly due to the fact that the APBT in this link looks pretty poorly-bred: http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html
It took me so many tries with that site I'm even embarassed to say it...
LOL, dont worry. I used that link in a presentation for a class once and offered to bring Starbucks in for the entire class as well as a pizza party on the last day in class if anyone got it right on the first try. Out of a class of 50, no one got it right except for my teacher who is a c@t lover and not into dogs. Go figure

Poor Pixie! It is strange watching them stumble around the house all stoned isnt it? Dex had an ear infection, and he would not let the vets flush his ear out. He kept shaking and not sitting still. They gave me a sedative pill and told me to reschedule and give it to him 1 hour before coming in. I gave him the pill, he went back in to the vet, I could tell there was going to be a problem. He didnt seem to be sedated at all. He still shook his head like crazy when they tried to investigate inside his ears. Mind you, he is very sensitive about his ears. He got cropped by his previous owner at a later age. So, the vet said "Sorry we cant help him, we need to put him under general anaesthesia to flush his ears." I said "no thanks" and left. 3 hours later he starts stumbling around the house, couldnt even walk straight. He looked like a total drunk, lol.

Oh dear. Meg certainly does not look happy. So sorry that you have to go through this Kat.

Be careful is all I can say. It takes a certain dog to be able to do protection work. I always thought that Presa's were leery of strangers to begin with. Akitas are somewhat similar in a sense that they usually dont start fawning over your guests. I have seen some people try to do schutzhund with their Akitas only to have disastrous results. Aside from that, schutzhund can be an excellent way to train, provided the dog is of great temperament. Good luck.

Funny thing about 'Ol Roy. I know a VERY well-respected Akita breeder that fed 'Ol Roy for the past 20+ years. Her akitas and danes have always been in excellent shape and healthy. I agree the ingredients are not good, but her dogs had no problem thriving on it. I just switched back from Eagle Pack holistic to Wellness Chicken.

I have seen a couple pits literally split their tails from this so-called "happy-tail" syndrome. In such an extreme case, I could understand docking a tail. However, cropping a mixed breeds ears is like those fools that put those big spoilers on their little Honda Civics... Its pointless, like a Honda Civic is fast enough to become airborne without that extra down-force.
Excellent post Jeff!!!!! I hate it when I see a Civic with the giant aluminum spoiler!!!! :cunao: :cunao: :cunao: :cunao: :cunao:
LOL, I have a couple friends in Garden Grove and its insane there. Every freaking Civic looks like a rolling discotheque. Dont get me wrong, I used to be deep in the import scene, but I just never understood certain things. Here's another, people who put those monster-tach shift lights on their cars. You know, the big huge tachometer on the left that lights up after you hit a certain rpm? I havve actually seen idiots put them on automatic cars.

If you got it from a "breeder" then you supported a back yard breeder.
With this comment do you imply that all breeders are back yard breeders? .
Anyone breeding Oripeis would certainly qualify in my book as a backyard breeder. The only thing that aggravates me is when people think that rescues are profiting from placing dogs. We usually charge people $150 to adopt an Akita. We are a not-for profit organization who is ALWAYS operating in the red. The money we charge basically allows us to not drown.
i'm against making vaccination laws stricter in general, because i want to have control over what goes into my dog's body and i would not appreciate being forced to do something that can harm my dog in the long run. if the law was limited to establishing immunity in puppies, fine, but people need to be aware that indiscriminate yearly vaccinating isn't a good thing at all. for a good reference on vaccinations, have a look at this site: http://www.critteradvocacy.org
I could not have said it better myself. My city cannot even enforce leash-laws, how are they going to go after people who dont vacc. theuir dogs? Legislation is def. not the answer.

Kira never really barks, its an Akita thing. She tends to aroooo. It kind of sounds like someone yoddeling. Dex has a pretty piercing bark. It def. hurts my ears. Since we are working on teaching him commands in French, he is starting to have a french-accent when he barks. It kind of sounds like "OUAF, OUAF" LOL, seriously though it really does sound like OUAF, and thats how french people imitate a dog barking. :)

Oh dear, I get sad thinking about deer. One time in Maryland, Kira was outside unsupervised and she actually chased down a young deer and killed it. Christine's parents have a huge backyard that leads to a state park. The deer was probably 150 lbs or so. It was quite a hectic scene, as Christine's dad was mowing the lawn and Kira walks up to Christine to come inside, shes covered in blood. Christine almost had a heart attack cause she thought there was a lawn mower accident. Christine was traumatized after seeing the young deer, meanwhile Kira was waltzing around proud of her accomplishment.

Rats, I missed it. I was at the uni for the fast few nights. So, it was Remy representing for the akitas? I have seen Remy on TV a few times, beautiful dog, but not really my cup of tea. So, did they actually show Remy in the ring, or did they cut to a commercial like they always do in the middle of the working breeds?
