The orginal topic of this thread, what to do about the abuse on pit bulls, which I agree is actually a problem with all dogs. There are lots of people fighting and supporting pit bulls, check out the forum I listed. Post these sentiments on there, you will find your excuses shot away one by one.
Look, nobody here advocates dog-fighting (well, there might be a couple, but they are in the EXTREME minority.) This board is not like PBF. Not everyone on here owns bullies. People are asking questions, and learning a lot. I dont see what is so wrong with some people saying that fighting dogs is the only way to find out if they are game or not, and other people disagreeing with it, or trying to come up with other ways. Instead of just joining here to reply to a single thread, take a look through the board. You will see that there are all kinds of people on here. Some knowledgeable, some wanting to learn more about bullies, and some who just dont know jack shiny about anything. And I have posted of pbf in the past. Its freaking boring talking about pits all day long, and giving Diane Jessup handjobs every time she posts something. -edited to add that I just want to clarify that I do not condone dog fighting OR matching. I love my dogs with all my heart, and it makes me just as ill as you when I see pics of dogs fought, etc.

Wow, I dont really know what to write. What is so important about your trip that you would go instead of staying AND LOOKING UNDER EVERY FREAKING ROCK for your dog????? Dont just contact orgs expecting them to find your dog, get your ass off the internet and this forum, and keep looking around. You are looking for apartments? Great, I am sure there will still be plenty there in the next week or 2 weeks, how about giving yourself a chance to find your dog first. Your gf has an appointment with an HR person for Home Depot? IF she already works for Home Depot, then it should not be a problem to reschedule. If she doesnt even work for HD and this is a job-interview, why doesnt she JUST GO BY HERSELF? Why you would even bring up Disneyland, or $150 baffles me.

CC, good point about redirected aggression. I have witnessed it numerous times (dogs trying to get to another dog through a fence, only to turn around and bite the other dog in their pack.) And to clarify for others, dog agression in no way determines if a dog has game. Take Dex for example. When he sees other dogs, his chest puffs out, the hair goes up, he growls, sometimes gives a lunge, etc. Due to some of his behaviors, I am pretty darn sure he is not game. Obviously, I dont really care either way. But just cause a dog is hot when he sees other dogs, it in no way is an indicator his/her gameness.

"]
Matching dogs is testing whether that dog will cur out and if it does, its not worth breeding because thats what the breed is all about: gameness. IMO, matching also can give you a better idea of whether or not that dog will bite a human, in which case, you dont breed the dog. theyre doing society a favor by doing this... unlike the idiots who fight for entertainment, pride, and money.
Some of this is true, and some of this is just regurgitated information. Do you honestly think that the majority of APBT breeders (responsible AND irresponsible) decide not to breed their dogs after they cur out due to the fact that someone might get bitten? I highly doubt it. They wouldnt breed the dog because it has no game. Far too often, the assumption is made that just cause a dog has game, it wont bite a human. Yes, a dog with game can be an absolutely wonderful pet. But, I want to see your average dogomaniac try to break up a dogfight between two game APBT's. I am sure a bunch of you would get the shiny bitten out of your arms. I am not saying that I have been involved with dog-fighting, because I have not. Hmmmmm I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Would you agree that the argument everyone makes about a "well-tempered, game" APBT never biting is somewhat over-exaggerated? I mean a well-bred Akita isnt a man-biter, as is the case with most other breeds, right? Honestly, I feel terrible about the future of the APBT. I see so many freaking bad apples out here, its nuts. Human-aggressive APBTs roaming around Hollywood are a dime a dozen.

If these a$$hats exerted as much effort in school as they did in their spamming forums, they would probably be super successful. Actually I take that back, what kind of a retard would spam a dog lovers board with pr0n? Tis guy needs to hire a new advertising firm.

Welcome to Dogo, from another Californian (I am assuming?) Kudos to you for taking in Libby and giving her the wonderful life she deserves.
How did you figure out she's a California? Do you have ESP? :hmmmm:
Well, San Clemente is a coastal town in Southern California. Bunny I assumed was as is beach-bunny. I could be wrong though. 0X

Do your dogs react to sounds on t.v.?
drjeffrock replied to JackieMaya's topic in Everything about dogs
Dexter broke an entertainment stand once. We were watching a dog show on tv, and they did an in-depth profile of Portugese Water Dogs. Dex jumped up from the couch, over the coffee table, and barreled into a entertainment stand.    Afterwards, it was leaning to a side, and standing up by a thread. Thank goodness it was a cheapo one. -
For some strange reason Asim thinks the hand puppets are real and he jumps at the screen. He attacks the TV and runs to my bedroom on the opposite side wall waiting for the puppets to come out... :stupid:
    Isnt it hilarious though? I swear I can just watch Dex doing that kind of stuff all day long. We live in an apartment, and when Dex hears the phone ring, then me say "Third Floor" he makes a b-line for the door and starts barking his head off. I was on the phone a few weeks ago, someone asked me what floor a buddy lived on in his new condo. I replied "third floor." And Dex started to go crazy. -

Yea, Dex is a freakin dumbarse. He growls and barks at the telly if there are dogs on it. Heck if it sounds like a dogs collar, he will give a bark or two. Our tv is thin and hangs on the wall, so he will run up to it when there is a dog on it. When the dog or animal is no longer on the tv, he runs into the bedroom behind. (The bedroom that shares the wall with the tv.)   I remember one time we were watching something, and a guy was pulling on some real heavy chain. Dex's head popped up, it was like he was thinking "DAYUM, that must be a big dog it is so loud." :D -
I also want 2 dogs not just one.
I might scratch Akitas off your list then. Greyhoundmama makes a good point. Akitas can be a whole lot of dog for a first-time owner. Then again, if you can find a foster/rescue adult that has a history of being good with other dogs, it might make it easier. Here is the MARS website, in case you are interested: http://www.akitas.org/

Jaci, you are right. And yes, the shedding is not year round with Kira either. But when she is shedding, good lord you better have a good vacuum and not mind spending 30 minutes a day brushing your dog for a few weeks.
-
An Akita would do the trick. They do well indoors, and will roll around like loons in the snow. Also, they are pretty much perfect guard dogs without any training necessary. Nobody is going to do anything bad to you with an Akita around. But, this comes at a price. Socialization is a must! A 100 lb. female who is not trained can be quite a handful. Oh, and did I mention that they shed? If you are looking for a loyal, brave dog that will be by your side no matter what, you might want to look into Akitas. There are a few Akita rescues I know of on the East coast, such as ARWNY, and Midwest Akita Rescue. I believe Midwest serves the MI area. These Akita rescues are fantastic. You could in essence adopt a fostered Akita and know if a) he gets along with other animals b) he gets along with children

I am new and I have some questions.
drjeffrock replied to White89SR5's topic in Everything about dogs
Hi, My name is Sam and my waife is Kelley. For the longest time she has wanted a dog and I really haven't wanted one, :agrue: but now I see that she will not be happy until she gets one so it looks like I will be getting a dog in the near future!! My wife was recently in contact with a Pomeranian breeder who has agreed to give us first pick out of an upcoming group of pups. My biggest concern is how with the pup act around my new born baby!! The baby is not due until November 22 and the dog wouldn't be ready to come home until about the same time? What are everyone thoughts on Pomeranians and new born babies? I would really appreciate evryones input or advice. Thank you in advance!!
Hi Sam, Welcome to the forum! We are glad to have you, even if you are not a dog lover from the get-go.  I am only kidding. Sam, there are pros and cons to raising a puppy and baby together. Obviously, the baby and dog will form a special, strong bond for many years to come. But... there are some drawbacks. Are you guys willing to deal with the added stress of potty-training a puppy, teaching him/her not to bark, or whatever the case is while tending to a newborn? Some dogs do not know how to react to newborns and their "weird" sounds. Vigilance and supervision are important. Just because a pom is not 100 lbs. doesnt mean you can leave your child unattended. In a hypothetical world, if I were to plan the timing of dogs and children, I think I would wait until the child reaches the age of 5 or so. My reasoning would probably be due to the stress of having a newborn. Another option that I highly recommend is to look into some rescue organizations. The reason this might appeal to you is two-fold: 1) You can get an adult dog and not have to worry about house-breaking, things of the sort, and more importantly... 2) You might be able to find a dog that is fostered with a baby, or has a known history of being fine with babies, toddlers, whatever the case. Remember, getting a puppy (even if its from a reputable breeder) does not guarantee that you will have a perfect, confident pet. It takes work such as socialization. Good luck either way, I am sure you guys will do fine. Just dont leave the dog and baby unattended and you guys will do great. -
Sounds like fun. I might be interested, although I have a 15 page paper due on the following Tuesday, so I better get cracking. :user:

Thus, all Australians are thieves.
Um, I never said all wild animals are happy in captivity. I just said they can be. When I said wild animals in responsible private hands can live happy lives, I was told this was only opinion, not fact. Thus, I go go out and find pics of wild animals in private hands who are happy. This automatically makes my original statement true, and not just opinion. Again, key word can. I never said they always are, I am merely defending the statement that is is possible for them to be happy as "pets."
LOL, I stand corrected. I didnt see the word "can" in that statement.
