URGENT !!! I NEED YOUR HELP!
__crazy_canine__ replied to Taurus and Jada's topic in Everything about dogs
My letter....
To Whom It May Concern, I am writing as the voice of my friends who dont have one. On the subject of breed bans, which I have learned the city of London is considering, I'd just like to point out some things. People do illegal things everyday but its the "bad" people who go against the law, don't you think these "bad" people will still own pit bulls? If they find it to be more trouble than thought wont they just move on to another breed? Then that breed too will be banned and this will keep continuing until just about every "dangerous" breed is banned. There should be more laws against animal abuse and laws on who can keep pets rather than banning certain breeds, which in the end only punishes the dogs and it's owners. Just my opinion which, I happen to know, many others share. Angela Isek, Plano, Texas
Hope I didnt say anything wrong in there.... thats why I dont like writing letters. :-? -
Montel Williams show on dangerous dogs
__crazy_canine__ replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Everything about dogs
She obviously knew nothing about the breed if she bought them for protection...
Well if it was for protection against people then yeah I agree with you (because they are friendly with almost all people) but I guess I shouldve said protection against wolves and bears. They were on large land and I guess it was really rural so they didnt want wildlife near their land. :-? Im just happy that they had an animal control officer on the show because at least she stuck up for people like us on Dogo and said that BSL is bad. YAY! So I guess thats better than Montel saying its good without any complaints so the people watching will think hes right. The whole show was almost completely one-sided. The breeds they talked about are all vicious and shouldnt be owned by people!   -
Montel Williams show on dangerous dogs
__crazy_canine__ replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Everything about dogs
To finish off the pit bull thing for Tammy, heres the rest of the story... not much just more of the womans opinion. She said how she onwed the dogs for protection, thats why she got them. IMO, thats not a good reason to get a dog, you should also want it for companionship. She said her kids played with the pits and everything seemed fine. She also said her life and her family's life was ruined by those dogs and she told everyone in the audience to never buy one of these dogs! I dont think she was very responsible to have THREE pit bulls in one household in the first place, or have them loose on her property. -
Montel Williams show on dangerous dogs
__crazy_canine__ replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Everything about dogs
With the whole wolf dog thing, this girl (4 years) and her brother went outside to play for the first time without their parents. A neighbor had a wolf dog who the mom said was hlaf wolf, half husky and half shepherd (three halves in there  ) Apparently while the mom was making lunch, the attack started and then she went to check on them and her daughter was swinging around in the mouth of this dog. They said she looked like a ragdoll being swung around. The girl had 3 1.2 feet of scars. She had to have 6 surgeries total and still needs at least 2 more. Ill post more later... -
Like you said Shannon, Bullmastiffs come from bulldogs. What an idiot. I bet shes never met a Bullmastiff before so how can she judge?!? :x

Interesting (and sad) story - Viscious Bichons??
__crazy_canine__ replied to ferky1's topic in Reading room
Thank you, Dee! You got to it before me... pits are NEVER given a chance but yet this dog after THREE bites is still being determined whether or not its going to be PTS!!! :x And Cairn6 I HIGHLY doubt this dog was provoked THREE times!!! Come on now! And its not fair to be putting down pit bull people on here! I dont like MOST small dogs either to be honest and it is mostly because of the owners. Im sorry if youre offended by my OPINION but thats all it is, my thought. Lets face it a lot of small dogs get away with lots of things just because of their size. Let me make it clear that I know its all because of IRRESPONSIBLE owners, I DO know that, so dont throw that in my face. This situation, like with most dog bites, couldve been avoided!!! Thats all I was going to say in the first place but then I saw the other posts... couldnt help myself. I need to get some self-control sometime... -

Wow Cassie! :o Thats great and thank you! :D -
Actually this time I decided to do them all from an older rescuer whos dogs sometimes go to Straydog's Adoption Day. ------- Im Jordan, a young female American Staffordshire Terrier mix. Jordan was found running the street. Now that she is safe and sound in her foster home, she spends her time playing with the other doggies there, which she really enjoys. She has already told us that she must have at least one other dog for companionship in her forever home. DOB 7/02. CALL 214-688-5585. $110 adoption donation. -------- Im Brittany, a young female American Staffordshire Terrier mix. dob 3/2001. $110 adoption donation. -------- Im Snow, a young male American Staffordshire Terrier mix. At 6 weeks of age, some mean-spirited person poked Snow's eye out and now he has only one. Even so, he has forgiven that person (as our canine friends are prone to do) and is friendly and outgoing. Who in the human world wouldn't carry a grudge after that? He gets along fine with other dogs but would also do well on his own because he loves lots of attention, and that way he would get it all. He likes to play but he is very much a houseboy. Please find it in your heart to overlook Snow's disfigurement, and give him a wonderful home where he is treated with the love and kindness not shown to him previously. DOB 7/02. CALL 214-688-5585. $110 adoption donation. -------- Im Dolores, a young female American Stsffordshire Terrier mix. Dolores has a unique characteristic in that she has one blue eye and one brown one. It makes for a very interesting look. She would like a playmate, as long as it isn't a cat! DOB: 4/01. Call 214-688-5585 for more information. $110 adoption donation. -------- And another one who isnt a pit but I just had to put because he is so sweet! I met him last week at Adoption Day. Im Ripley, even though Im labeled on the site as a boxer mix, my friend thinks Im a Great Dane/lab mix and Im a young male. $110 adoption donation. DOB 9/2003. ------- Oh and Smokey.... Im not sure if he got adopted yet but here he is anyway! (sry for the bad quality pic I didnt take it and it was the only good one I could find!) Im Smokey, a young male pit bull mix. Hes a beautiful blue brindle color and has so much energy! He loves to play with other dogs. He is a little bit dog aggressive but only to some males (and its mostly only other pits). Hes really sweet and loves attention. -------

What products would you say every dog needs? Things in case of emergencies? What are the best products? ...and cheapest? Im asking so I can be prepared if I ever do get a dog/puppy. I know monthly heartworm treatment or that 6-month vaccine, but I heard somewhere that can cause health problems for certain dogs? Toothpaste products? I know a lot of people dont brush their dogs teeth but anyone know any good kinds? What about age to be spayed/neutered? I know you SHOULD have it done before or around 6 months but I also heard somewhere it can be done as early as 8 weeks! :o That seems REALLY young! How often should dogs go to the vets to get a check-up? How often do their nails need to be clipped? ...bathed? ...brushed? (I know it depends on the breed) What are common illnesses for dogs and what are the symptoms? What should puppies be introduced to and at what age? (like new things that can be scary for them) What is the normal age for a dog to be potty-trained? Is there such a thing as too young for training? I think this should be a sticky because this is key information in owning a dog. A lot of this I do know already but Im not sure if Im totally correct. Any help on this would be great. I want to be completely prepared when I get a dog ...even if it will be about 8 years before I do. Anything else anyone can think of besides what I put would be great! Im writing all of this down at home in my notebook too!

My heart is broke, the girls are fighting again.
__crazy_canine__ replied to xavierandrea's topic in Everything about dogs
JC, ok yes it was her fault for not sperating them but dont you think she feels bad enough already?!? Back off a little bit... she needs some support right now not bashing, even if it is truthful. Sorry xavierandrea but she does have a point. :( -

Well, Im sorry it ended up this way. My best wishes to you and your family and I hope Patti has a good time before she goes. :( -
.... Shelter Needs Help! .......
__crazy_canine__ replied to __crazy_canine__'s topic in Dogs in need
Thank you very much DAL. The thank you letters and newsletter thing though Im not sure about... Im pretty sure they print those out themselves because Bill's old work funds free printing or something like that if I remember correctly ... but if you could, you can always try to write to dog food/supply companies to see if theyd be willing to donate! I might PM you if you want to do anything still. Again thanks! Ok so let me make it clear just what I might do and what yall can do if you really want to. -write to companies about making donations of money, food, and dog supplies -write to newspapers and mention Straydog and their website -get people to donate (paypal is a good way) Basically just make people aware of Straydog. Most of the work needs to be done AT the shelter so we cant help with that. :( The newsletters and thank yous we cant help with (well I could if I go out to the shelter but I have no way of getting there.) Sorry I didnt make it clear just WHAT and what NOT you all can help with. I often leave out major details in my posts!  -
.... Shelter Needs Help! .......
__crazy_canine__ replied to __crazy_canine__'s topic in Dogs in need
Yeah, that would probably be really good. I think anything close to the subject of shelters and rescues, or a pets chance at life would be good. Any information you guys need about the shelter I can tell you. I mean I guess it would be hard to write anything about them since you dont know what theyre about. -
.... Shelter Needs Help! .......
__crazy_canine__ replied to __crazy_canine__'s topic in Dogs in need
Thanks yall, but thats the thing... Im not sure what they want written. I think they just want mention to get their donations up. So.... I guess just any articles about animals could have them mentioned. Im not sure if that helps at all or if you still would want to write and what your topic would be. *shrugs* But Im glad you all want to help, thats for sure!! Also, I want to do a fund raiser for them but Im not sure where to start. Any ideas for that? -
We've got to do something to raise enough money to hire enough people The dog work is getting done. This includes feeding, vet visits, walks to (and play time in) the park, continuous kennel cleaning and special daily caregiving for each and every dog (including brushing, checking for ticks, hugging, petting and sweet talking). The dogs are happy, clean, healthy (or getting healthy), and they all know they are loved by everybody here at Straydog. We don't need to hire more employees to do the "dog work." We've got a great crew. We're covered. We even do all the mowing and weed eating ourselves now, saving what used to cost us $365 per week having an outside mowing crew do that work. Right now enough donations are trickling in to keep us about three weeks ahead, which is not a very big cushion, but at least we keep going as we always have (and always will ... somehow). The tremendous amount of office work is what's not getting done We need: (1) At least one full-time person searching for and writing requests for grants and doing the paperwork for the matching gift programs that many of our contributors are taking advantage of; (2) At least one full-time person acknowledging contributions with thank-you letters and "in memory of" letters, which we're way behind on now because we have no time; (3) A full-time person writing letters of request for donations to dog food companies and other companies selling dog supplies; (4) A full-time person who would spend all his or her time writing about Straydog to newspapers and magazines, calling into talk radio and TV shows when the topic has anything to do with homeless animals, mentioning www.straydog.org, etc.. (5) A full-time computer/Internet tech (an IT person)--our webcams have been working only sporadically for the last couple of weeks, and I can't fix them, and my son, Joe, can only get down here for a few hours every Sunday afternoon. Joe fixed them this past Sunday afternoon, but they're on the blink again! The PC that runs our satellite Internet hook up is filled with viruses that have slowed it down to a crawl. Joe's trying to locate another used ("free") PC, which should fix the webcams also. People call in and email in suggestions all the time Please go for it, I keep answering them. I'm so busy from five a.m. till 10 p.m. seven days a week (except for my Saturday two-hour lunch date with my 95-year-old father) that I'm just barely able to keep the "show" running. We really do appreciate everyone's ideas and suggestions for raising money and making Straydog a better place, but with an office staff of none, we're scrambling each and every day just to get through each every day.
Ok so I know you all cant work at the shelter lol but does anyone have a computer to donate, or writing skills to write to places? I want to help with this so I might write to the Dallas News but I would have to think about what exactly to write about. Straydog has been in the news before so I want something fresh. I mean I feel great because if you go to the website, http://www.straydog.org Im the one who got them that search engine. Im so proud. I guess most of you wont be able to help much because youre not from around here. I suppose you could always write to dog food companies if you really do want to help us out! Thanks even if you dont help. Suggestions for what I can do would be great. I need to come up with a topic for a news article if I decide to write. Again thanks everyone!!!! :D

See the problem is when people get dogs but arent "dog-people." In other words raised, a dog is just a dog, an animal and nothing else. Thats when people think its ok to do what they want with the dog because its property. Sometimes thats not the case but the people just arent ready for what they thought would be "easy." Makes me mad sure but even more than that, sad.
