I THINK we're getting a dog!!!!!:)

Well. Ok. So. I'm happy! :banan: My mom called the Terv breeder today... she wasn't home. The other person who she talked to said that she'd call bakc before 10. It was 10.02 and I'd given up hope. And then a MIRACLE happened! she called! So I started gorging on cookies and staring at the computer screen, not seeing anything trying to overhear what was going on over the phone. It seemed like ages. :o Then my mom appeared out of the doorway... I was scared that the worst had happeened. But NO! :D And THATS the melodramatic version! No, but seriously, it went pretty good and hopefully I'll be able to go visit this weekend, or week. I need my dad to drive me, and until 3 weeks ago I had refused to see him for a year. Dumb, yes, but things are ok wiht us now. He LOVES dogs, and they always like him too, which is something really great about my dad. I think he'll want to drive me, and he can help me lots with a dog. There are two pups left, Embla and Elliot. In the pictures I've seen they are the cutest of the litter! :) They have grown up with rabbits, which for me is fantastic since I have small animals too. So I'm hoping it'll all go well. And if it doesnt, it doesnt. Thats that. But I have fallen in love with the breed, and I don't think I could find a better breeder who charges a realistic price ($600 about). IF it were to be the right pup, then it would be going to a show in November that she's signed it up for! Now THAT would be fun! :) -
No, she does not look like a pit bull! She does look awfully cute though! :)
-
Looking forward to them! :D

I'm going to go check out the keeshond breeders now! One good thing about being home sick is that I can spend HOURS on internet doing dog reaserch! :) And yesterday I found out that I have access to someone who is very knowlegable with dogs! :) -

Well, K you're like the expert on them, and if you don't think it would be a good idea then I won't do it. Thanks for helping me decide. :) But she is so cute! I got a picture. :( I hope she gets the perfect home for her though! My list of "somday dogs" is getting very long... If I get a new dog every 10 years, so I'll always have 1 or 2 dogs, then I need to live for another 110 years! :o -

Well, I have a kind of urgent question now. I just got a phone call from someone with a puppy. AmStaff Pit Bull mix. I have always thought that they seem like nice breeds. I don't know if I am suited to one though. PLEASE advise me!!! The person I talked to seemed nice (except for calling at 10.30! Didn't bother me, but it did bother my mom  ) He said he would like to keep contact with the puppy to make sure she is happy. I asked if the parents have had all the health tests, and they have. So I think the person seems ok. He said the puppy, who is 10 weeks old, is really nice and cute and friendly and all. Has all shots and stuff except for one which she will get in 2 weeks. Of course before I'd say yes to buying her, I'd have to meet the puppy, mom dog, and person. But what I'm wondering about now is if you think I could handle a dog of that mix. -

My mom has made it clear that she wants a dog that will be able to settle down some. From what I know of Tahoe, who is a border collie, that won't really be that much. And Tahoe is an outdoor dog (well, she is supposed to be. She can open the door though :evilbat: ) so she runs lots. I guess I really WILL have to wait... :( Oh well. Thanks for the help though! :) Even if I cna't do it I'm glad I found out stuff about it, so I won't go thinking that I could have maybe gotten one.. Are you sure a trevuren wouldn't work? I'd be giving pretty much exercise, and stuff. The breeder I contacted seems really good, the price isn't outrageous, but its a real breeder who seems good. From what I've found out about the breed, it seems really nice too. I read somehwere on internet today that they often get along well with other small pets. And that they're playful and smart. And they have a coat that needs grooming! I LOVE grooming dogs! :) -

I know I've heard some people suggest books before, but I can't remember where. I'm giong to buy a few (or at leeast one or two  ) dog books now soon. What are the best ones? I want at leats one training book. I thinhk someone said sometime that "So your dogs not Lassie" or something like that was good. I'm looking at it at Amazon now. It does seem good. But I also know that once someone posted something about a horrid book, but it had gotten good reveiws from people still. So I was wondering, what books that you have/know of are the most usefull?

The Canaan seems nice Aroura! :) I doubt I'd be able to find one here though. :( A corgi would be nice, but they're too small. :) A Golden Lab would be nice. It seems like a great combintation! :) One thing I just thought of, would a dog with a short coat like a lab or something be cold in the winter? It can get pretty cold here somtimes, but not that often. could clothers solve that problem? -
Oh, I WANT ONE!!!!

Thanks! :) I checked out almost all the aussie breeders in Sweden, and none of them seem to have puppies until 2004. I really don't want to wait that long. Somday I want an Austrailian Shepard, but its not the only breed I like and my mom might let me get a dog now, before I have a week off school. So I guess I'll be getting a lab, or other retreiver type dog. I'm looking at adds now, to see what I find. Thank you all for the help! :) -
I'm happy you're back!!! :D

imported_nea replied to imported_nea's topic in Everything about dogs
I think we have both breeds, but they aren't so common. But I'm sure I could find a breeder somewhere. My favorite breed that I haven't known a dog of is the Australian Shepard, from all I've read they seem like wondrous dogs that I'd love. If you think they'd be able to be happy living in an appartment, then I think thats what I want to get! :D I'd love to have a border collie, and Annushka said she knows people who do have them in an appartment, but I might almost rather have an aussie. Now what would be nice would be to have an australian shepard/border collie/papillion mix! Thanks for all the help I've gotten!!! :) -
Pity you don't neccessarilly want a little dog, because a Papillon would be perfect!!! Actually they are like a big dog in a little package, not yippy, very affectionate and are the most trainable and best agility dogs of all the toy breeds! They are also unique, don't need to be clipped ever and only need a quick brush once a week. Don't shed much either as they have no under coat. They are the type of dog you walk down the street with and they turn heads, plus, although they look all upper class they are great bush dogs, they can adapt to almost anything. And I can guarentee you'll fall madly in love with it!!! They are the best cuddlers and are so quick to learn things! Sociable and friendly with strangers, adventurous and not shy to explore new people and places. As far as health goes they are one of the healthiest little breeds also. Great dogs, I am biased but I also know what its like to own one and I can assure you its a pleasure. I've never been a little dog person, but I think it was the temprement of the papillon as well as trainability, intellegence, sociability etc that drew me to them. They are "a big dog persons little dog" if that makes any sence, a big dog in a small package. Most people havn't hear of them so I tell them that they are like a border collie, only smaller - and seeing as thats what you like you might want to check out your options!!! Oh, plus Montie has a few Swedish champions in his bloodlines so you may even find a relative of his! Otherwise I would probably say a schnauzer
Seeing pictures and hearing about Montie has actually made me think that papillons seem like the nicest small dog! :) And someday I'd like to have one. But for my "childhood" dog I really want a bigger one. Just a preference thing, I guess. I get along better with bigger dogs usually, and have alot more experience with them. :) -
Guess what? I have Montie photos!!!!

I LOVE herding dogs! :D I think thats my favorite group. I know someone who has a corgi too, and its adorable. It really is a big dog on short legs. I wish its legs were just a bit longer. I'm so scared I'd step on a little dog. I know thats dumb, but its true. Even with Birk (an english cocker spaniel) I was scared to step on him. Brittanys seem nice too! :) -

How about a Newfoundland? It says they do ok in appartments. And they seem like nice dogs too. Although I doubt my mom would be thrilled with a huge, hairy, slobbery breed. :( -

When I was reading about the American Eskimo dog, it mentioned the Samoyed, which is also a breed I love, I knew a super dog Samoyed a while ago. It says they do ok in appartments too. But also "Samoyeds should not be trusted with small non-canine pets" :( To bad. :( -

They seem like nice dogs!:) It says they love to bark, which isn't so good for an appartment. But maybe that can be trained away. Thanks for the idea! :) -

Congrats! Hope you ARE able to get a pup/dog. That said, I think A Border Collie would be the WORST possible choice. Since the breed really doesn't seem to matter that much, how about checking at the shelters?
Well, in Sweden there is only one dog shelter, and they handle only about 400 dogs every year, most of them which are just lost. And there are more people willing to adopt than there are dogs. Also, they don't let you choose your own dog. Some dogs I just can't "connect" to somehow, I can't bond with them as strongly as with some others. And so I want to be able to choose my own too. :)
Well not being able to choose your own would be a VERY good reason to stay away from the shelter. :D What about a smaller dog. Not a toy or terrier, just something a ittle smaller than a Lab sized dog? My reason for saying this is, if the weather is bad, it is a LOT easier to exercise a smaller dog in an apartment. (And a lot less likely to break something :o .) What is the weather like where you live? Does it rain or snow much?
It does rain (well, drizzle) alot. And it can be snowy. But I love the snow, and I'm used to rain. The only thing I don't like about rain is that the snails come out. So during really rainy days I'd most liley take running type walks on sidewalks where there aren't any snails, and slow walks with careful looking of where I step in the woods. But I don't think it would be that much of a problem. :) But I do need to teach the pup that the aquarium in NOT to be leaped on. If there is a smaller type dog that acts like a big dog, then that would be great. But I don't know of any breeds that I really like that is much smaller. Do you? Its worth lookin into. :) HAve to go through my dog book more! :) -
