what age is too late to crop my APBT?
imported_nea replied to ebkelsey's topic in Amstaffs & Pit Bulls
I hope all the people who are against having dog's ears cropped are against women and even some men having their ears pierced. If you ask me most people do both for the same reason, which is cosmetic. I have heard better reasoning for a dog to have their ears cropped than for a person to have theirs pierced. Eric
But when a human pierces their ear they decide to do it. If a parent forced their kid to pierce their ears that would be wrong I think. I doubt that a dog wants its ears cropped. Actually I doubt they even think about it much... But anyway cropping a dogs ears, thats a decision us humans make for them, and unlike some things like making them stay on a lead around trafic and stuff like that that they might not enjoy it isn't something that will cause them to have a longer, healthier, better lives. It is, as you said, for cosmetic reasons. That said I don't have much of an oppinion on cropping/docking since its illegal here and I haven't been confronted with it. :) -
None of the dogs I've know have had that interesting names. Except for Polly who was nicknamed Sausage (she was fat and brown). But I did know a cat named Squish, which is probably my alltime favorite name. Strangely enough she started out as Athena... How my cousins could have gotten Squish from that i dont know. :o Dim-Dim/Big Golden/Fat Cat was known originally as Jouripidies, whoever thats spelled. I've named all my guinea pigs after edible stuff- Marmelade/Marmey, Martizpan/Martsie, Brownie/Pum, Twizzler Twix/Tizzy/TizzleWizzleWasAWeasel, and Rusty-Skittle/Tubby, Little Loudmouth. :-? I guess one of my mice has a strangeish name, Boot.

Flatcoated Retriver Pros: super affectionate, enthusiastic, intelligent, eager to please, easily trained, can be used for most everything, active outdoors but realatively (sp?) couchpotatoish indoors, loves everyone both dogs and humans, beautiful, doesn't shed much, good with small pets, easily motivated, not very barky, charming. Cons: Jumpy, licky, sometimes overwhelmingly exhuberant, needs lots of mental stimulation (not necissarily a con), food crazy, easily excited, need lots of passivity training, hardly any fur (could be a pro but I like grooming :-? ), a bit stubborn.

My aunt has one, Morga. :) They are wonderful dogs, so sweet and gentle. :D But drooly! I don't know how much drool I've consumed while staying at my aunts because Morga has this habit of putting her humungous head in your lap and drool there over the plate of food. :o  Here is a picture of Morga: And to show how huge she is, here is a picture of her with Leah as an 8 week old beagle puppy; And Morga being stately and dignified. She does that well! :) I know I only said one picture... I don't know anything about dominance or anything, but if you aren't having problems with dominance then let him be a dog and sniff! :) It seems to me that most everything dogs to someone has said can cause a dog to think he is the "alpha" or be dominant. Once I read that someone suggested taking a spray bottle with their own pee and spray it on top of the dogs outside! :o Not letting a dog sniff isn't that extreem of course. :)

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement! :) Today it went SO much better than last week! Before we started I decided to enjoy myself. My dog maybe isn't as well trained as the others, but he is still the best. And heck, he is 8 months old while they are like 2 years! Of course he isn't going to do as well as them. But that doesn't mean he can pay absaloutly no attention to me either... :-? It went really well today. Only 3 dogs including Web were there so that might have made a difference, and I had pig's heart instead of "yucky" Frolics, and last weekend we went to train there so he was more used to the surroundings, but I think it was in a large part because I was having a good time. I was able to ignore his less good stuff, and when he did right, which he did do MANY times :D he knew how proud I was of him. And the trainer praised him a couple of times too! :) He likes her alot. I can't figure out if its because she's a dog person or if its because she always has hotdog with her... I feel really inspired to train him lots now! The thing tahts our "homework" is to stop dead in his tracks. He allready knows it (sort of :P ) when he is in front of me, but since this is training for competitive obedience he has to do it while heeling and do it more exact than normal, so we're doing a new command for it. She showed how to teach it and its during play sessions so he'll really enjoy that! :) Training my dog must be the most fun thing there is when it goes pretty well, and one of the most frustrating when it doesn't go right. I think it'll keep going better now that I have tried to change my attitude some. He is such a smart, good dog.

I can't seem to put my face anywhere near Web without him licking my whole face. It doesn't bother me (excepet in the mornings when I'm trying to sleep :-? ) because I can' always move my face if he gets annoying. But is it normal for him to lick so much? How much do your dogs lick you? :)
I personally would never buy a dog from a breeder who had a website or advertised on the internet. Most of these people are very shady.
Alot of good breeder have websites, my (well, Web's  ) breeder does, as does Web's father's owner/breeder, and they are both fantastic. I've seen alot of other good, serious breeders websites too. Not that it has anythign to do with this thread really but I wanted to point out that not eveyrone who uses the interenet to advertise or inform about their kennel is shady. :)

I hadn't thought about that he would pick up my frustration... stupid me. I guess I'll just have to laugh it off when he missbehaves. He doens't get to play with other dogs much, mainly because I don't know anyone with dogs. Sometimes he gets to play with someone if we meet a nice dog on a walk or something. Before he got to greet almost every dog we met too, but I've stopped letting him do that unless he can behave a little bit calmly first. But he gets so excited around other dogs. The 4 D's thing makes lots of sense, I'm going to have to remember it. :)

Today me and Web went to our first Competitive Obedience traing class. He was so very bad! :( Last week during Everyday Obedience 2 he missbehaved too, but that day had been different and he was a bit stressed from that, so he had a reason. Today was JUST like any other day! He kept whimpering/whining because he didn't want to sit still, he determinedly did NOT look at me when I asked him too, he refused to heel, he would not stay seated, when I called him he came running towards me with full speed but then kept running and sniffing around. I don't need him/want him to mechanically obey every single thing I ask him to do, but this is getting rediculous. The thing that gets me is that he KNOWS the stuff! I train him everyday, often outside on the fields nowadays. He does well. This week he's learned not to pull on the leash, to "stick close", and heel better. He was even able to heel nicely offleash when a man jogged past the other day, and take an hours walk without pulling. I'm so proud of him. I've been taking him downtown some too, and he SHINES with goodness! He can sit calmly as people talk to me/him, walk on a loose lead close to me, sit by while I feed the ducks, settle down if I stop. But as soon as we get in the company of the other dogs he transforms into a BRAT. :-? I'm not that embarrased by him because the people there are other dogpeople, and like I said I don't need him to be at the top of his class or do everything right, but SOME cooperation would be nice! There have been horses in the place this class takes place, could that be a big reason why is is so terrilbe there? He always wants to have his nose to the ground and eat the poop that didn't get cleaned up. But could it also be that he's hit his "teenage" stage and is purposely being a bit troublesome? He'll be 8 months old tomorrow... It would be nice to have something more to "blame" his annoying behavior on than just his training... Still this weekend we are basically going to move to the dog training areas... :evilbat: A funny thing though- he knew I was a bit preturbed with him, so in the car on the way home he weasled his way into the front seat to my lap and lay there and slept, after cleaning my face carefully. He's a little charmer and I cna't get (that) angry at him. And he takes advantage of that! :) But seriously, who couldn't resist this face

Here in Sweden to become a champion flatties have to have passed a (several??) hunting tests (if thats what its called?), in addition to the stuff they need from the conformation shows. I like that they have to do that. Labs and goldens here are so very devided into the "show" and "hunting" strains, which is one of the reasons I got a flattie in the first place- I wanted an active dog, but not one that I would HAVE to hunt with like some of the labs here are. I think its good that they have to prove themselves some beyond how they look and act in a show ring, its not that hard and keeps the dogs more versetial and closer to what they were supposed to be like when they were created.

Licking... soothing or annoying?
imported_nea replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Everything about dogs
I'm one of those knobheads... I have a hard time sleeping without my dog's licking, guinea pig's fighting/chewing hay/talking, and mice's squeaking. :P -
Dumb questions about your dog from the general public
imported_nea replied to Queen Bitch's topic in Everything about dogs
Funny Nea, I'd think that you'd get "Is he a black Golden Retriever?" I actually heard that at the dog show I was at this summer. The sporting group was up and some woman pointed and said " Oh look honey it's a black Golden. We should get one." This was as the dog was standing next to the sign that said "Flat Coated Retriever."
:o Its hard to believe someone could be that stupid! Or perhaps blind? :-? So far no ones thought he was a black golden... But its probably just a matter of time  . This doens't have anything to do with the topic, but are there black golden retrievers like there are yellow flatties? -
Dumb questions about your dog from the general public
imported_nea replied to Queen Bitch's topic in Everything about dogs
 People can really be stupid! :o So far no one has said anything too totally inacurate about Web, but a did neighbor say "He's a labrador, isn't he?" He looks nothing like a lab! :-? -
What do you think is too long to leave a dog along? How many hours? What I've gone on is the 1 hour per month or age but not longer than 8 hours thing that I've read somewhere. I've been getting blasted for leaveing Web, who turns 8 months old on March 11th, alone for 6/7 hours a day. According to them, leaving a dog for more than 6 hours is animal abuse and that I leave my dog for that long is cruel and is a sign that I shouldn't have a dog. :-? Web does occasionally have an accident in his pen, but thats if he hasn't done his "buisness" in the morning. When he has done it he has no problems waiting untill I come home to go to the bathroom. Webby doesn't seem a bit unhappy to me, in fact he seems like a perfectly happy, well adjusted dog. And personally I think Swedes in general are a bit closeminded about dog raising/training/stuff. For example trying new things like haltis, crates, things like that, and they seem to think dogs can't handle being alone at all almost. But still I'd like to make sure. Is leaving him Web, and dogs in general, for 6-7-8 hours a day really bad? Or is it allright? I know I can count on you guys to be honest and objective, and I trust your judgement. :)

A few days ago at about 2AM I was trying to sleep which was proving hard between the sqeak of Toki the mouse running on the wheel and Webby snoring, when I had this strange idea. Could dogs use wheels like those that mice, hamsters, etc. have? Bigger of course but the same general design and all. Would they use them? Could it hurt their backs? I'm not actually going to make one for my dog but I can't shake the thought. It would look kind of fun I think...

He is cute. But way to small, I think Web is too small and he must be about 50 times bigger than that puppy. :-? I wonder why he stopped growing at 4 weeks age? I knew a cat once who's growth was stunted because he had been abandoned by his mother outside when the kittens were young. He was the only one alive when he was found. I'm not sure how old he was but never got bigger... I think he was about the same size of that dog. :)

:( Poor Spot. Poor Barney too, it must be hard on him to loose his friend. :(
