1. Kiger - I thought the thread was pretty good for a thread on RR's. Somebody already had told that person to have that dog checked out so I didn't feel the need to jump on them again. I did post to the topic since even the RR owners didn't really have the facts completely, although I ended up posting it twice and I can't edit the second one to say opps.
  2. :D Good luck Doc, she's real Pretty.

roo wrote: What breed or breeds do you have TIFA? And what country are you in? Eurasier, and Finland.
Please educate us on your breed and it's problems, regardless of whether or not there genetic, before you question ours. Are you a breeder, exhibitor or fancier? What is the main health problem that you see in your breed? How is your breed's club/breeders trying to eliminate this problem? Give us some education background please! Where do your "statistics" come from, how many sources? Why have you not researched this topic to develop a basis for your argument? particularly the breeds that you brought into the discussion; ie. English & French Bulldogs.
  6. :-? That's what I've always thought. I feel so sorry for that baby, if daddy is that ignorant or mean. I don't think he should have pinched the babies ear, but if he was going to do it he should have done it only if the baby didn't obey. I wonder if he would spank his two legged children after they obeyed him.
  7. :D   That was great and so very true.
  8. Yes, it's the Basenji. Wow that was an easy trivia question.

    Sick breeding

    :-?
No intention to bash a breed, just used it as an example. A lot of breeds have problems because they have been bred to extreme. I think you are being a bit too optimistic about responsible breeders trying to stck with the original breed standards. Not at all being optimistic, just noting that every breed has their share of problems and that there are good breeders out there that really do strive to maintain true standard, even temperment.Even breeds clubs don't usually pay much attention to the matter. Show judges rarely touch the subject. Are you referring to U.S. breed clubs or the ones in your country? We see again and again how the "extreme" types win at Westminster. If there are dog breeders who breed for the original dogs, they are working at the sidelines of the "elite" dog fancy, not at the top.
Again the whole society of dog breeders has it's problems and I do not disagree with you on the fact that there are alot of irresponsible breeders (whether they are in it for prestige or money) in the show dog world, but your original statements pertained to why were people breeding the English Bulldog with it's stigmatism of having breathing problems and my comment was that you needed to research your observations with the truly reputable breeders that are breeding the correct standard before jumping to conclusions that this breed should not be bred. Your opening post can very well be construed as a disdain for the English Bulldog breed and not as an example of the dog society in general.
Warning: this is a long rant that might upset someone. This stuff has been talked about before, I just don’t think it’s been talked about enough. Please don’t start throwing personal threats and flaming me, I’m not trying to point fingers, just want to express an opinion.
I assume you have been lurking here for quite some time if you feel we have discussed this topic and it is unfinished.
But you get me all wrong. I'm not here to bash a breed, I'm giving criticism on breeders of certain breeds.
Then I would like to ask why you picked the English Bulldog and not the GSD, or the BC both of which have a reputation for having just as many problems as the EB. You barely touched on other breeds in your original post. Tia, If you have a problem with the breeding practices of reputable breeders what would be your solution to fixing these breeds and take them back to their original standards?

    :-? Tia wrote:
That's my point: a breeder can be considered completely reputable in the dog community, even if she's purposely breeding for physical features that can cause suffering to animals. Nobody's doing anything about it because it's the "norm". A breeder of white Dobermanns gets to be called a backyard breeder. a bulldog breeder gets a pat in the back even if her dogs would be a lot sicker.
That's my point, you should actually research a breed, yourself, throughly with respectable breeders before pointing out it's faults. I understand that the English Bulldog has somewhat of a reputation of being a breed stricken with a lot breathing problems, just like the GSD and HD, we could go through the whole list of breeds and point out the health problems each one is plagued with but without hands on research from a reputable breeder breeding for true breed perservation one shouldn't pick on a particular breed. As I pointed out the truly responsibe breeders breeder for preservation are in the minority and without proper public education will probably remain so.

    Sick breeding

:-? First - Welcome to the Forum. Second - May I point out that your English grammer/spelling is rather well for someone who does not use it as a first language. Third - You make some very valid points, although I think the key argument is Responsible breeders. Unfortunately there are pure-bred show breeders that are in it for the prestige or money. There are Irresposible BYB/millers in it for the money. There are Responsible breeders out there trying to better the breed and get back to the original standards, unfortunately these breeders are rare and usually in the minority. People have their own personal motives for breeding dogs & other animals and unfortunately most of the time it is not the right motive. I believe that the key to preserving any breed is in the education of the general public who is willing to purchase that breed. Proper education can reduce the number of bad/irresponsible breeders but will most likely not eradicate them. Last - I understand your example of the English Bulldog, although I get the impression that you would not have a problem with seeing this breed extinct. There are responsible/respectable breeders of this breed, again unfortunately they are in the minority. I would suggest you contact these breeders and do an essay on this breed before you start bashing it.

  13. :-?
I am also concerned (as you all know) with people buying certain breeds of dogs because "they are SOOOO good with kids!!" - They're NOT, unless trained properly and dominated properly. I sent a message to that guy about wanting a Golden with just that warning. People buy labs for the same reason, and then cant understand why the dog bit their kid when it slept on the beds, everyone waited on it hand and foot and it was never made to understand that it was not the Alpha in the household. Dogs are ANIMALS! As much as we love them, we have to understand that. Most of us do, but the novice dog owner is in for a shock if he buys a dog according to "Breed Standards" and it attacks his kid.....
I agree with this, RR's are one of those breeds, absolutely great with children, IF they are trained properly, you can not allow any dog regardless of their ancestry to believe that it is Alpha. However, talking to a responsible breeder first will educate the buyer about the pro's/con's of owning a dog, any dog. A truly responsible breeder will be able to help the buyer decide if a pure-bred is what they really want or would they be just as happy with a rescue or shelter pup.

    Spot's Stew

 Wow, this stew, homemade or store-bought sounds great! Love the yogurt container idea, I never thought about using them for that. I mix wet food with dry food for my babies, but don't really like using store bought canned food, I prefer to feed them real stuff with their kibble. What would you say the freezer life is and what are the best veggie's to use, does anyone ever use beef instead of chicken (although tweedle-dee & tweedle-dum prefer chicken.) Has anyone ever heard of Eagle Natural, I've been using this since the pups were 4 weeks old. I have never had any problems with it but have noticed that noone has ever mentioned it and was wondering why.
  17. I don't have a problem with someone wanting to adopt/rescue a pup from a shelter. IMO, if someone wants a average dog, no pedigree required then the local animal shelter or rescue is a perfect place to adopt a family companion. These pups can make excellent companions and are not always ridden with health issues or temperment problems, and can often be more loyal than a pure-breed. However if someone has a need, whatever it may be, to own a full-blooded pedigreed dog then they definately should look for a reputable breeder and make sure that their are no health issues and quarantees, you get it the whole works. If your going to buy from a breeder make sure that they are in it for the love of the breed and not anything else; otherwise you may have been better off buying that puppy in the window.
  18. :D My IG thinks she can swim, she has no body fat to keep her afloat but she tries with all her might. On the other hand, Sally and Rocco sail like canoes, love every bit of it. Sally has always followed me whereever I go, regardless. Rocco wouldn't get in the water until a friend of mine walked out to where it was just above his head and let him go. I was standing right beside him and he was so glad to see me, now I wish I could keep him on the beach when I decide to float on a raft.
  19. typically pronounced (vwah-lah) means the sames a Ta-dah, an exclamatory statement indicating that something or someone is/has finished a task or project. ex. The magician waved his wand over his hat and wallah the scraf was turned into a rabbit. Hope that helps K.
  20. Marion said:
My dogs eat people food all the time. I have to do a big shop this week as their freezer is running low.
What a lovely shine on your girls. I bet they are as healthy as ever and not a complaint to be had. I know that my babies are quite content on their food choices, although not as luxurious as Ruby & Rosies, they get tons of people food and I wouldn't have it any other way.
  21. :-? :o Courtnek please don't rub your eyes after working the your flower beds. Please, please wear gloves till you know your yard is clean.
  22. Here's another cute story about dogs and babies. A friend of mine brought her little girl (age 4) to the lake, we were all sitting around talking while her daughter was petting my Italian Greyhound. We were not really paying a whole lot of attention to them when we noticed that they were french kissing, both of them had their tongues out and were licking each other, it was so cute we just had to laugh. Another cute story: My mom had a German Shepard and an Afghan Hound while she was keeping my cat Pumpkin (no pet clause at Apt). Pumpkin would run up to the AH swat him in the face and then run and hide under the GS. (Pumpkin grew up with the shepard). It was so funny, the AH couldn't do a thing about it.
  23. I'll :drinking: to that. Congratulations.
  24.     I know this hurts and that you will try to blame yourself, but I want you to remember that you have been a good momma to Hazel. She has been very roller coaster with her temperment and that could very well be an indication of a chemical instability. You should remember her and realize that she will be happy and healthy at the Rainbow Bridge. Do not blame yourself, you did not fail as a momma; you were the best momma Hazel could have ever gotten. My heart aches for you and Hazel and my shoulder is here to cry on.
  25. :D Just wondering if you found anything out about the fungicide or if you were going to do the bleach soak? Oh and how has Pussycat and Freebee been getting along?
