I agree you should definitly report them. Even if Animal Control don't take the dog away maybe the people will be scared into treating the animal better. Like HF said if you call and nothing happens at least you know you tried.

Hey wait! Why does Hillside get them?! She likes DALMATIANS! I'm the one who like GSD's, so therefor I should get them! :D
-
Zebra has one too! :D http://www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?i=658

If it's something semi-healty I let him lick the bowl, fork, pate, spoon ect. I don't think it's gross, I have to wash the dishes anyways so what does it matter?

Oh my dog I can't breath! What a beautiful dog! I LOVE his marking and colouration. Can't wait till you get him so you can post more pics!

I'm so sorry Tammy. Please don't be so hard on yourself. You provided Smudgie with everything, food, a great home, and unconditional love. I know it's very hard right now but just think that he is running free at the Bridge right now happy and healty knowing that someone on earth loves him very much. ((((Hugs))))
To be honest, I hate feeling obligated to tip anybody. I do it to show appreciation for a job well done, not because I feel obligated. While we're on the subject, and this may raise some hackles, but I hate tip jars I see in places, grooming salons included. There's no way I'd do it.
Exactly! I don't ever feel obligated to give people my money unless they have done a good job. I didn't tip the groomer because she cut my dogs hair..I did it because she did a GOOD job cutting his hair. If she had done a bad job she wouldn't have gotten a dime. Oh yeah and about thoes tip jars? I hate them! As mean as it sounds, I purposly don't put tips in the jars. It seems to much like begging for a tip and some people think that they deserve tips just because some stupid jar is out even if they provide horrible service.

Today I got Zebra groomed. The cost was 65 for a haircut (no bath). When I went to pay I tipped the groomer 3 dollars. My mom was shocked when I did this. She said I shouldn't have done that, and I responded "Don't you tip when you get your hair cut?" and she said "Yes, but it's not the same." I thought it was proper, they are providing a service and if they do a good job should be rewarded for it. So does anyone else tip there groomer? Groomers do you think it's proper to tip?

I give 1 or 2 CC's of liquid pepto when Zebra is sick. Then he goes on a diet of baby food and white rice. It worked very well when zebra had very bloody stool and was throwing up.

Nope Jeff...definitly not in jeparody of being PTS. He's gone already. Was there 3 whole days and his owners came to pick him up. From what I understand he accidently got loose and was found as a stray. His owners found him and picked him up. I only got to see him once while I was there and was very sweet...well he was actually lazy and just laid there while I stood by his cage.

What/ what kind of organization(s) do you volunteer to? -Humane Society and SPCA (see signature link) Do you (other than volunteering) work outside the home, with a set schedule (8-5 M-F, shifts, etc)? -I go to school part time and am currently looking for a part time job. What do you do as a volunteer? -Lots, I socalize dogs. I take dogs out into the play yard. I help with the shy scared dogs that need special attention. I attend events for pets like 'Pictures with Santa"Paws". I do paperwork. I help fill envelopes when stuff needs to go out. I interact with the public every moment I am at the shelter and give appropriate information when needed. All that and more! And i've only been there for 2 and a half months! Do you see a lot of need for more volunteers? What would they need to do? -Absolutly! We always need volunteers. Volunteers are what make shelters work so smoothly. What kind of volunteer opportunities are there for those who must work 8-5 M-F? -At the HS I'm at they are very easy to work with. You "work" a minimum of 3 hours a week. M-F after 3:00pm is a time for students and people who work. Saturdays are usually only for people who work full time. Saturdays at the HS you can go on 'Mobile Adoption' units and help out with public activities. Plus there is always paperwork or other things needed to be done. Anything else you can think to tell me would be fantastic! -Like some people said, it can get depressing when you work with animals that are neglected and need homes. But it's such a rewarding thing to do, especally when you know you have helped an animal. I wouldn't trade volunteering for anything in the world...(ok i'd trade it so that every animal would have a forever home  ) Thanks!
The subject here is rescues and adoption days. I'm sure we've all been to the petstores on the weekends and seen the rescue dogs and c@ts lined up in the store or out front so people can look at them and maybe adopt them.
That's how I got my Zebby. A total 100% greedy impulse adopt.  I filled out an application, talked to the officer that was there, was asked a few questions. Paid for his adoption, neutering, microchip and was out in less then an hour. We picked him up at a vet hospital after his neuter a week and a half after that. Now this was a mobile adoption from a pound not a humane society. Now the Humane society I volenteer for does it totally differnt. They have a huge van that they do there mobile adoptions from. They take out all sorts of dogs and get the interest of the pubilc. It's not so much to adopt animals out but to educate people on the humane society. If people want to adopt they can fill out an application at the mobile site but still have to go down the the actual Humane Society and go through the entire interview process. From personal experience it seems that Humane societys are usually more strict in there adoption process where as city pounds are very leaniant in there process. I can't realy say that the idea of having adoptions at Petsmart, Petco or any other retail place is a bad idea or that I'm against it since I did get Zebra from one, but I think it's probabaly a good idea that has a few bugs (or a lot) that need to be worked out.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking back today about what could have casued his fear and I think I might have figured it out. About a month and a half ago there was a LOT of fireworks that went off at this football field about 3 blocks away (stupid homecoming! :x ). Zebra was terrified that night and I had a hard time calming him down. I think that must have started the fear in him. I just didn't put 2 and 2 together since he was scared in the house. He is also afraid of loud cars/trucks/motorcycles when we go out so I'm sure that it's not helping him when he hears this stuff. I'm going to do like you all said and slowly start to desensitize him again. We have a gated porch so I can take him out and just sit with him untill he starts getting use to all the sounds and sights again. And I'm going to look in to Rescue Remedy too. I know Court and a few others use/used it but how long does it generally take to start working?

Zebra has been acting very..odd..lately. He is very scared to go outside. I guess this started about a month ago but untill resently hasn't been a big problem. This morning I took him out so he could do his buisness and I literally had to drag him out of the house to go outside. I kept saying in a happy, upbeat tone "Come on lets go out! Wanna go outside?!" He use to LOVE going out and playing and going for walks. Now he refuses. Once I actually get him outside and on the lawn he will see a car or a person and his tail will go down, ears back and his butt will drop very low. Then he will take off and run to the back door and scratch to get back inside. I just don't get it! Nothing tramatizing has happend to him outside that I know of, I'm always out with him so it's not like something could have happend that I didn't know about. This is becoming a HUGE problem to the point that he will only poop and pee on newspaper that I have to put down in our laundry room. I know, I know..it's so gross but he just won't go out anymore. I've tried to take him out and give him treats when he is being good. I've forced him to sit out there and watch cars pass by and people walk down the street. I never yell when he wants to come inside, I try to make his outside time as fun and exciting as possible. So any ideas on what to do or why he has gotten like this? I don't want to force him to go out anymore because it seems to be making things worse. I've also tried to take the newspaper away so he won't pee/poo inside...I thought that it would force him to do his buisness outside, but no. He will hold it in all day..and I mean ALL day and he still refused to go outside. Today alone he held everything in for over 15 hours! :-? I dunno what to do!

For Carin...a list of my dogs (Other please join in)
StarFox replied to a topic in Everything about dogs
Holy Mr. Potato Head some of you have tons of animals! Sheesh I pale in comparison. Zebra-A 2 year brindle Golden/GSD mix. Adopted from North L.A Pound on a whim while at petsmart. Is a part robot with all the metal plates and pins in his hip. Also has a bad attitude and thinks he is alpha. Nibbles-A 3 year old black/violet/grey rabbit. Came to us the day after my dad's best friend died. Some stranger came to our door late one night and said he "found" the little rabbit on our lawn. We kept her. She is our miriacle bun. -
Zebra is only off leash in the house. Everytime he steps one paw outside he is on a leash. It's kinda sad but we don't have a fenced in yard and we live on a busy street. When he goes out he is usually on a 30 ft. leash so he does get to move around where he wants to. I can't wait till we move (hopefully soon) and get a house with a yard for zeb. :D

This year I've decided to take Zebra to see a groomer for the first time. He's getting a little shaggy
Starfox, Im sure your dog wont consider this a gift  its almost comparable to someone takin you to the dentist for a teeth cleaning for an X-mas gift.
Very true Matty. So I guess it's not so much a present for him then for me. Oh well I guess that means I can buy him more stuff then if he gets upset.

Well of course I always get Zebra and Nibbles something for Christmas. This year I've decided to take Zebra to see a groomer for the first time. He's getting a little shaggy. I also am getting him some treats and this: A plush T-bone steak that smells like meat. YUM! I'm sure I'll end up spending more on Zeb then anyone else this year. So what do you plan on getting your dog this Christmas?

Food Aggersion Grounds for Being PTS?
StarFox replied to Sharpeigirl's topic in Everything about dogs
Well I can kinda see both sides. It's not fair that food agressive/shy/etc dogs get put down. But it is a reality. I hate to say it but it's almost a necessary evil. Trust me if shelters had the money, time, staff, funding, and support to rehabilitate dogs with behaviour problems they would. No one likes to kill dogs that have a small problem but they have to think about the "big" picture more then the emotional side. Speaking just from experience, our shelter gets 10-20 dogs in a day. Now with 80+ dogs that are already in there it gets full fast. So yes we are going to put down the dogs that arn't in tip top behavioural condition. But we do work with some dogs. We have a "dot" system. Blue dot=perfect, 100% on his tests; Green= good but not perfect, 90% passes his test; Orange=Shy, fearful, 80% passed the test. The "oranges" we do work with, there is a group of people (myself included) that are only allowed into there cages to socalize them and try to bring them up to a green or blue dot. We try very hard to work with all the animals but considering how many animals come in a day it literally is impossible to help every one. It is also a HUGE liablilty to adopt out a dog with agression problems of any sort. And considering that 70% of our adoptees have children we can not in good conscience put an agressive dog with children. As much as I hate knowing that so many dogs are put down i'd much rather have them have a happy last few days in a shelter, getting fed every day, having a nice warm bed to sleep on, and getting attention then having the dog die on the streets. -
Oh boy today I got to deal with, not one, but TWO morons at the shelter! Oh what fun! :-? The first was a woman who came up to me while I was putting SOXY a pit bull back into her kennel. She comes up to me and says "Oh you have so many pit bulls here at the shelter, why do you have so many? It's because they are mean and they get agressive and nobody wants them, huh?" I must have had this WTF? are you talking about look on my face i swear. So I told her "No actually we get so many in here people people don't spay and neuter there dogs. We also get them because people THINK that they are mean and agressive. I haven't meet one agressive pit here, they are the freindliest breed as a whole that I have meet so far. If I could take them all home I would.". Then she says "Oh so they are nice?". :wallbash: Before I could say anything this little girl runs up to the woman and says "Miss. Jones they have bunnies here!". That's when I relized that the woman was a First grade TEACHER that was on a feild trip with her class. :shocked!: Good to know that she is teaching the future of america. :( The second moron..I mean person I came across was a woman looking for a second dog. She asked if we had any medium mixed dogs (uhh only about 20!). So I pointed her to a small rotti X. And she goes "Oh no! Rotties will turn on you! Plus my boyfreind won't let me have a rottie since they are so mean. Don't you think that's weird that he won't let me have one since we have a pit mix and you know how they are!" :o I told her that "Any dog can turn if it isn't treated right. And rotties don't "turn" on there masters, neither do pits." Honestly where do these people come from! Sheesh! I'd like to hit some of them upside the head with a nylabone! Anyways here is SOXY the evil pitty! Unfortunatly she has been at the shelter since I have started volenteering there. I hope she finds a home soon. :( And the rottie-

Yup Zebby steals my undies all the time. He always manages to dig to the bottom of the hamper and pulls them out. Thankfully he dosn't rip them or chew them up. He just lies on top of them.
It was also ALWAYS a thong!
Same here DO!!

Narrowed it down to 2 breeders - your oppinions please?
StarFox replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
Ok I usually don't get into the middle of things like this but I read every post and I have to comment. Aroura I find your posts, especially your last two extremely rude. I am especially appalled by the way you have responded to Kiwi and Newfie. They did nothing but try and guide you in the right direction and give you valuable advice. No one on this site was rude to you but legitimate questions were asked about comments you made about making money off your dog.
I don't get it, there are plenty of breeders on this forum who aren't questioned, and here I am trying to do all that I can to better the breed (including considering an import) and you're all questioning my motives?
The breeders on this forum HAVE been questioned and have proven time and time again that they are responsible breeders. Also you can back pedal all you want on the money issue but the fact is that you did state very clearly that you expected to get back the money that you spend on your dog by breeding.
PLUS - That will mean I can get him docked!!! Apparently it doesn't cost that much for importing from NZ, a girl at training was telling me today that her Danes breeder was importing from NZ and it was only $1000 for the importing, plus $500 aus for a good dog, so I'm thinking that a Boxer would be less? Plus if he turns out as gorgeous as his dad he is sure to make the money back in stud fees!!!!

Well I wouldn't be buying a dog to make money, but if I went through the effort to get the best dog from the best lines and spend hundreds on going to shows etc to make some money from studding would be a nice reward. Of course I would only stud to approved bitches etc but I don't see any problem in studding out a good dog from good lines to improve the breed and getting money for it.
Those are you direct quotes taken from page 2. I think that questions would be raised if any breeder on here thought that they could make some money by studding out there dog. The thing that (almost) everyone is trying to tell you is that you will not make money studding your dog. I don't exactly think Kiwi and Newfi are rolling in the dough by breeding, do you? Breeding is about bettering the breed and it's a labor of love for those who do it. It's not about the money, you've been here long enough and should know that. No one told you you can't stud your dog. People told you the reality and you didn't like it. No one on here has been a snob but you. You asked for opinions and were not happy with the answers and got indignant about it.
I used to enjoy it here, but certain people have made it a place where I'd prefer not be a part of
Remember this forum is what YOU make of it. -
Wha! That is so werid! :o I can kinda see people doing that with there dogs but I'm not so sure about people! I don't think I would like gramps made into a necklace. No thanks.

Hmm Cairn does your dog chase his tail to the point that he ignores commands and only focuses on chasing his tail? Does it seem like an obsessive thing or is he just playing?
