I agree with courtnek, she is definitely testing you. It's the whole give an inch and they take a mile thing. Just stick to the alpha rules and be consistent. Unfortunately if you let her get away with something once she will remember and try it again and again. If you keep at it while she is young so she fully understands her place she shouldn't try it on when she gets older.

My dog has a fetish for socks as well. I don't know that there is much you can do other than remove the temptation.

Now, "the dog turned off the alarm" can be added to the "the dog ate my homework" it could go something like Sorry I'm late the dog turned off my alarm - ah no I don't have my homework either as the dog ate it :o

Tick-o-Mania! Heat, and my grandfather...
Malamum replied to Rowie-the-Pooh's topic in Everything about dogs
Wow Bahrain sounds interesting. I don't know why but I just assumed you were from the US. NO!! you are not a bad owner at all. Rowie sounds like she is VERY loved. In regards to the ticks I would just order as much stuff as I could on-line and buy a fair bit in one go so you don't have to pay too much in shipping costs. -
ohh Lily has a boyfriend :iloveyou: That really is good news and Lily got along with him so well. It's great when things just seem to go right all of a sudden.

Since we had a break in the rain, I just took Indy out for a quick walk. We went past a house that has a golden retriever in their fenced in front yard - however it's not a solid fence so the dogs can see each other. When we were about 30 metres away the golden started barking and running up to the fence. Indy started to strain on the leash but obviously didn't think we were close enough to warrant his normal lunging and crazy behaviour just yet. So at this stage I told him to sit and didn't move again till he was sitting calmly looking at me. We then took about another 2 steps before he started to pull again so again we stopped and I told him to sit. It took us about 5 minutes to cover 10 meters as I made him stop and sit as soon as he started to strain towards the other dog. By the time we were directly in front of the yard with the dog he was very good (I had made him stop and sit about 15 times by this stage) and he just walked past with me. He had his head turned towards the other dog the whole time and was whimpering a little but in all I was VERY pleased with him. I know we still have a long way to go and I’m sure he will play up the very next time we see another dog but if I keep working with him hopefully he will calm down around other dogs. I am also hoping that as he gets a bit older he wont be so excitable.

Maya (my "special needs child") is under control!
Malamum replied to JackieMaya's topic in Everything about dogs
Hang in there. It sounds as though you are on top of things, though making the fence higher sounds like a good idea. We went for a 6ft timber pailing fence. There is no way on earth Indy is getting over that. :D -

Please don't start talking about the price of your dog food in the US or the UK or you will make me cry  . A 15kg bag of Innova costs me $150.00 :o and the Euk was $100.00. I'd rather pay the extra $50.00 and get a much better food.

Thanks Pumkin, I'll look into the Zinc. The vet seems to think it was the weather that set it off. She said he probably had a small scratch which normally would just heal quickly however since we have had so much rain it just couln't dry out like it normally would.

BK and Malamum re. spastic dogs (and anyone else too:)
Malamum replied to Marble's topic in Everything about dogs
Marble and Shannon I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'll describe Indy's behaviour patters around other dogs. 1. If he is at home either inside or outside he is not one to bark or carry on as other dogs go past outside. He will go to the window or screen door or gate to try to look at them and maybe give a small woo woo - nothing significant though. 2. When we are walking I dread seeing other dogs. Sometimes his hackles go up but he always jumps around yep standing on back paws, front paws in the air, barking, growling and generally just going ballistic. You would think from the carry on that he wants to kill the other dog. When he does this, I make him sit and I pretty much have to physically put him in that position and try to make him look and focus on me and not the other dog. Again I physically have to put my hand under his muzzle and tilt his head up to start with then I wait till the other dog has gone and he is just calmly sitting and looking at me (of his own accord) before we move on. Shannon - I use a halter on Indy too and it really does help - on a flat collar he would just pull me off my feet. On the halter although he still goes crazy I can control him much better. He is coming up on 50kg so there is only about 10kg between us and boy is he strong. Most other people walking their dogs look at me like I have a crazy beast, I even got a head shake and a tsk tsk the other day  I have had some people that say lets let them say hello we do so carefully and then Indy is fine he just wants to do the sniffing saying hello thing. Though he is very dominant - he will never submit to another dog so I have to be very careful. If the other dog submits then Indy just loves to play however if the other dog gets annoyed at his dominance (head on top of theirs, putting his paw on them) and snaps at him then it would be on for young and old. So I don't take him to the dog park any more. 3. At dog training. When we first get there he gets very excited pulls, jumps around and woo woo's a lot. Not really growling and barking like he does when we are walking - maybe he knows he gets to socialise at training :niewiem: I try to get there early so we are one of the first there and then pick a spot to stand with him till the classes are ready to start - it's too hard walking him into the area if it is already packed with dogs. The 10 minutes before classes start are considered general socialisation time. I normally just stand in one spot, tell Indy to sit and try to keep his focus on me (by bribing him with food). When people come up with their dogs to say hello the dogs do their sniffing etc... though I keep a very close eye on the other dogs to see how they are going to react to his dominance and then take Indy away before they get annoyed if they are not obviously submissive. Once classed start he is usually very good focuses on me, does what he is told and forgets about the other dogs. HOWEVER last week was a nightmare... it was raining so we were all wet and cold and I guess the rain hyped him up a bit and he just would not concentrate. He just kept wanting the bug the other dogs - he got so bad I ended up taking him out of the class and we just watched for the last 10 minutes. I was so annoyed at him. :x Oops sorry for the long post; kind of got carried away. But I wanted to outline his behaviour because if anyone has any tips on how I can better react when he is going berserk then I am all ears. -

Boomer had a "hello"with A PORCUPINE!(Pics)
Malamum replied to Holz_Boomer's topic in Everything about dogs
I hope Boomer is feeling much better. Shannon I remember watching that movie and I have never cried so hard in all my life (yes I tend to have a habit of crying at Disney movies  ) I got soooo upset at the end when I thought the Golden Retreiver didn't make it with the others and then there he was and I just blubbered even more  -
Do your dogs have a favourite blanket, bed etc.
Malamum replied to marion's topic in Everything about dogs
Dogpaddle, Indy is the same. I feel like I am being mean and neglecting him by having him just sleep on the tiles, but it's all he wants to do  -
MY PUPPY IS EXPECTED TO BE BORN WITHING 24 HOURS!!!
Malamum replied to Crested's topic in Everything about dogs
Getting very impatient here!!! How are those puppies going? -
Unfortunately dogs with thick coats can be prone to them and I think Indy is just going to be one of those dogs that is. This is the second one he has had. It's been raining here non stop for 5 days so I think that contributed to it. The vet had to sedate him to shave and clean the area (about 20 x 10 cm), she gave him an anti-inflammatory injection and we have oral antibiotics to give him and also cream to apply. The shaving of the fur really helps, as it starts to dry out and scab over in a day or so and then the scab should be gone in about another week. Then we just have to wait for is beautiful fur to grow back. He looks a bit like a plucked chicken :(

Horsefeathers, that is a very striking picture. Although I don't personally find it overly attractive I do have to say it's very impressive looking. Though I kind of feel sorry for the male poodles. The picture makes me think of a snooty rich lady wearing a fur hat and wearing ankle boots and a muff.

Just got home from the vet - Indy has a hot spot :( The poor baby is so unhappy and a BIG area of his fur on the back of his neck has been shaved. My poor little baby. I just hate seeing him so uncomfortable. :( :( :(
