Max is very concerned about his naked leg full of stitches and a drainage tube as you can see here in this picture! [img]http://brenda.myphotos.cc/shavedleg.jpg[/img] Here is a blurry close-up of his incision and the tube. Yuck! Sorry it's so fuzzy; Mr. Max did not want me to snap this photo. I had just taken off the wrapping and he was feeling bad.. :( [img]http://brenda.myphotos.cc/shavedknee.jpg[/img] So, here's the scoop on Max's knee. It wasn't a torn ACL at all! He had a huge abcess that had encapsulated itself right beside the stifle joint but had not invaded it. The vet thinks he may have had something invasive like a thorn prick his leg deeply leaving a spot of infection that over time built up into this huge abcess or he thinks he may have had an old injury that somehow left debris in his leg and provided a source of infection once the leg became stressed from going up and down stairs for three weeks. :-? It took quite some time to clean it out according to the vet and there was a lot of debris in it. I wonder about that... At any rate, I heaved a big sigh of relief about Max not needing a repair of his ligament. But I am truly puzzled about the abcess and wonder how long it had been festering. It ballooned in the space of one day like he had done damage to the joint. Now he has to finish out his course of Deramaxx, plus he is on two Cephalexin capsules three times a day...until they are gone, and there are one hundred capsules. He has found a nice, quiet spot to lay down after a small bit of breakfast. I'm so glad to have him home. We have cancelled our trip to Greenfield Village over the fourth. We don't feel okay about leaving him under the circumstances... :(

Well, I'm relieved. I just got off the phone with the vet's office and Max is through his surgery and is doing just fine. I get to pick him up at 8:50 tomorrow morning!!! :D At that time I'll be able to find out exactly what they had to do to repair his stifle... His brother Ben misses him....he has been moping around all day. When I got back home after dropping Max for surgery Ben was so excited! He ran outside and loped up to the car and looked inside.....but....NO MAX! :o His tail drooped and he plodded back inside with me turned his nose up at his breakfast (unheard of!), and has been shooting accusing glances at me in between his naps. :roll:

Oooops! Naughty Rio! Trying to save them for a snack later?.... :(

He is a good boy to show you the mess on the rug. :D

I will never go socializing with other canines without my master. 51. I will not take my master back to that horrid SPCA; she says it is a Christmas party but I'm afraid she'll leave me there. 52. Today has been a difficult day, Marysmomma. I shouldn't have reacted so strongly to your post. I got some bad news (not related to doggies) this morning and was extra sensitive.. :cry: Normally I am very rational and slow to jump to conclusions. I think people have strong feelings about the issue because they feel passionately about it. So after reflecting upon it, I'm going to leave this discussion to others from now on. I think part of the issue for me is the gradual erosion of individual rights and freedom to make personal choices across our societies - this a huge concern; are those in charge of the rules effective in balancing laws for common good without stifling free choice? We are losing our sense of fair play and common sense! :(

Wow! Next time I will definately mind my own business. I feel like I've been put in a "down - stay"! :o I did read the entire article carefully. :-?

Ben already had his dignified name when we adopted him from the rescue organization out of Chicago. Max is named after Maxwell Smart in the OLD "Get Smart" spy spoof TV show from years ago. You know, the guy who talked into his shoe. Plus, I thought he just looked like "Max".
