Better safe than sorry. Ahhh, the old 6th sense that some people don't believe in. I always listen to that inner voice....I just wish it would speak a little more loudly concerning winning lotto numbers!
I hadn't heard of problems with these drugs. What are the risks? Do you have link to some good info about this? Thanks, James
Yes, the most prevelant side effect is gastrointestinal ulceration, bleeding and general upset. Death has occured using Rimadyl. There are too many links to post. Just use the search bar and put: Rimadyl (Carprofen) or Etogesic (Etodolac) in and you'll see several good sites to visit.

Jacsmom --- if Jac was prescribed post-op pain med's, what were you given? HF --- was the dog that had the hip surgery prescribed any post op med's? The Tech called --- FINALLY --- and said Guy would be on Rimadyl for pain. I tried to be as calm as possible when I told her not in this lifetime would my boy be on Rimadyl because of the possibilities of fatal side effects. Yes, I was nice, calm and tried to keep my voice as pleasant as possible. She said, "well if the doctor had any concerns with Rimadyl then he wouldn't prescribe them". :o Ma'am you do not understand, so let me restate my stance on this -- I do NOT want Guy prescribed Rimadyl or Etogestic. I will be calling tomorrow, again and reinterating this to the doctor. Any suggestions on post op pain med's?
Yeah those words are always great huh!! Well look on the bright side... He is breathing, out of surgery ...and coming home Friday where YOU yourself can take care of him...and your ulcers! Surprised you did not asked if the Vet Tech knew exactly his weigh and how to admin. pain meds and antibiotics! (or did you??) I will say that when Jacs pin was in he did not use his leg but hopped around because it was uncomfortable and his bones were still growing (even if the vet said they were not  He grew 1 " taller with the pin in)..once it was out he used it more and uses it more everyday... I do not know if the halo will effect Guy in the same way but it might be worth asking about... You are very welcome and give Guy loads of hugs!! :D Hey a Pug will give him something to look at!!
I will be sleeping on a pallet on the floor with him when he comes home. I KNOW the halo has to be painful, because there are wires criss crossed into and out of the bone holding the halo in place. I'm talking about holes drilled thru the bone, then wire threaded thru it to hold the halo in place. I kept telling the Dr that he will grow more --- he doesn't think he will --- HE WILL, he is ONLY 7 months old and every other Kelpie that we've had has not stopped growing until they were over a year old. But, he asured me that he has allowed for more growth. Okey dokey. LOL --- yes, I did ask if the Tech weighed him. The Dr laughed. AND I asked if there was a restroom in Guy's room --- dead silence! I continued by saying, so ..... who will watch him while she takes a break? He said there are several Tech's in the intensive care unit. I think I will be making the 2 hour trip to check on my Guy-boy on Wednesday.

Just a nosey question -- --: Is your website a regular one or one of the premium ones? AND are you happy with geocities?

I called after 1pm, they were still in surgery. I was like Bart Simpson....is he out yet, .... is he out yet, ..... is he out, yet..... The vet finally called a little while ago and said he was out of surgery, "seemed" okay, surgery went well "he hopes", and he just pulled the tube out and he is "able" to breath on his own. The vet tech will be calling us to talk about "some things" after 6pm. She is staying with Guy all night to administer pain medications and antibiotics. Tomorrow, they will be seeing if he can "still use" the leg. ( :o ) Isn't it amazing the "little" words that we pick up on and WORRY about it? "Seemed", "he hopes", "able", "some things", "still use" --- NOT what I wanted to hear, but at least it wasn't bad news. So, whew....he made it thru surgery and will be in intensive care until he uses the leg. Then he goes to intermediate care (someone with him all the time, but no pain med's). Then he goes to general care....then home!! IT'S AFTER 6PM AND SHE HASN'T CALLED!! I'm going to have ulcers or be insane before this is over. I'll tell you guys something, I've been about as useless as a hen on pump handle today worrying about the boy.

Gigi, you can look at her face and see that she is happy. Yeah, she's happy.
 GOD created Pit Bulls, do you think he made a mistake. Game dogs don't quit, game owners don't quit either. Kevin, Layla and Skydog
Ummmm, actually they are a "man" made creation from various infusions of dogs. Not trying to start an argument, but they are a man-made for a very specific reason in mind and thus were bred for many, many generations for that purpose.

   I think she was just raised as a "show" dog and was for that purpose, not saying she wasn't loved. She just had a purpose and it was to be still and act right in the show ring, so she learned to be all business all the time. She just doesn't know, because she was never taught how to play (just guessing). She doesn't know you aren't supposed to destroy the fuzzy things. Now, they are no big deal, so the toys are safe. We have a male Heeler that was raised in a kennel his entire life. The lady was "throwing him away" because he was getting some age on him and could no longer "make money". And she was raising Malamutes and Husky's -- anyway.....he has NO idea how to play. All he wants to do is be petted because for the first 7 years of his life he was in a pen by himself. He gets along with the girls, but not the boys --- not even the neutered males. We just work around it and he's pretty happy hanging out with the girls and learning how to play without getting defensive. He won't play with us, yet. He gets afraid and just doesn't understand what it all means (yet---we're working on making him more confortable).
The other 3 pics of her didn't show up for me... :( Pit only has one "t" in it, not two... and some pit bull owners get a little "disturbed" when people put two in it. I think it stems from the way "pitt" is usually used by ignorant people who also think that pit bulls' jaws lock and that they have 2 sets of teeth  Not saying you think that, but that's the general impression I've gotten from most people:roll:
Goo -- is thatt a pitt-peeve of yourrs! Glad I'm out of smacking range. 8) Just like "healer" is a peeve of mine. :-?

In reference to deafness: Congenital deafness in dogs (or other animals) can be acquired [caused by intrauterine infections, ototoxic drugs like gentamicin, liver disorders, or other toxic exposures before or soon after birth] or inherited. Inherited deafness can be caused by a gene defect that is autosomal dominant, recessive, sex-linked, or may involve multiple genes. It is usually impossible to determine the cause of congenital deafness unless a clear problem has been observed in the breed or carefully planned breedings are performed. The deafness, which usually develops in the first few weeks after birth while the ear canal is still closed, usually results from the degeneration of part of the blood supply to the cochlea (the stria vascularis). The nerve cells of the cochlea subsequently die and permanent deafness results. The cause of the vascular degeneration is not known, but appears to be associated with the absence of pigment producing cells (melanocytes) in the blood vessels, related to the merle and piebald gene. The function of these cells is not known but appears to be critical for survival of the stria.

Mmmmm, my mouth is watering. :o ....for the bologna, that is. No word yet. It's lunch time. I'll be ringing them at 1:01 today to see how he's doing. Sakari has looked all over the house for him :( . They are big time play, nap and hanging out buddies.

Yep Connie....Friday for me and Thursday for Horsefeathers.

You know you and Perry have my well wishes, 10-fold!
Sorry folks, but I chain my dogs- it's been my experience with northern breeds that they detest being kenneled as they will pace endlessly, and try to chew their way out of a kennel causing serious injury to their mouths. If anyone has seen captive wolves they'll do the same thing. As far as exercise, we are currently running about 125 miles a week and I spend at least 8 hours a day in direct contact with my dogs. (I currently have 12, and one 4 lb Pomeranian!) And yes I agree- to see a "family pet" simply chained up alone is a pathetic sight.
Is the Pom your lead dog??  (hope you know that I'm kidding)

 you're babies are growing up! Seriously, are they just tired of the bunny toy? I'm sure she is happy, maybe she just thinks she's too mature for all that nonsense. Did you play with her when she was little or just cuddle her? If you cuddled with her -- she actually may not "know" how to play with you.
Hmmmm, Caramel Delights. Drool, drool....oh, sorry Hobbit!
"Drool Delights"? Yummy....... where is that puking emoticon?

OUCH --- just looked at the horses (forgot to look the last time). A little pricey for an unproven (a prospect) filly or colt.

no matter how much grief they give the cat it does not magically disappear!
Well, you know how they always say that it gets worse before it gets better. While things are tough now, keep in mind that it WILL get better. Guy is still in my thoughts and you go get some rest. Trust me... I know exactly how you feel and there can't be any worse feeling in the world than that of absolute helplessness and feeling totally powerless.
Yes, I know exactly how you feel. You see the train wreck coming, but are powerless to stop it. When is Perry scheduled for his surgery?
-
 I forgot to mention, his surgery is in the morning. I will be glued to the phone. The surgeon said he'd call the minute he was out of surgery. He should be able to come home on Friday. They will also be repairing his elbow, which was slowing being dislocated. He'll take post-surgery x-rays (now called "Radio-graphs"), then more before he is released. We'll have to take him back once a week for the next 2 months. I think I asked him several times, without realizing it, if there was any other proceedure that could be done, besides this one. Yes, break both bones and then plate them, BUT --- the leg would be 1 inch shorter and he may have problems because of it. I'm just dreading the halo, I guess. It will be all bandaged up, as to ensure that it doesn't get caught on anything. OUCH. I guess we better stock up on bitter apple to keep him from chewing on the bandages! The bandage will have a "flap or window" were we use a wrench (YES a wrench) to turn the screws 2X's a day). I don't drink (really, I don't), but after this......I might start!! :drinking:

Roo, I have seen the same thing in the US (short legged and the more leggier).
