When we speak from personal experience, we are sharing from the heart. We are speaking (here) of a subject that we are passionate about (our dogs). We are adamant when we want to prevent someone else from being exposed to the heartbreak we (I mean Hobbit and Horsefeathers) have encountered. Scientific explanations aside, we love our dogs and want to protect them in the best way that we can. For some, that means a raw diet becuase that is what makes sense based on our experience. For others, a kibble, for one or more of many possible reasons. Our personalities also come into play here; some of us are more research-oriented. Some prefer the "tried-and true". Some want to come on the forum and be spoon-fed a "black and white" answer. There isn't one. Some of us have a science background; others get the deer-in-the-headlights look at some of the ingredients listed on the back of a dogfood bag. I know that, in the case of my dogs, they have always been very healthy. Changing their diet was never an issue, until I came on this board and learned about ingredients in their kibble. I did change kibbles. I have not yet gone to BARF (JCB in all your slights of me, you have yet to ask me what I feed my dogs. You have assumed that I BARF when I do not.). For one thing, I haven't found a place locally to get bones. Also, I am still sifting through all this info....salmonella....e coli.....yes they can....no they can't.... and when I get to my decision I will be very, very sure of what I am doing. As far as the illnesses, I can tell you one thing from my own experience. I have had both e coli and another illness.....darned if the name has escaped me but it is usually only found in kids under age 5.....both times I was REALLY REALLY REALLY SICK. Both times I was told that I had most likely picked it up AT THE POOL(on vacation) OR IN THE RESTROOM (beside the pool) where people changed their kids diapers. ewwwww. As an almost obsessive handwasher, this was quite a surprise. But both times I had observed mothers changing their kids diapers outside on a lounge chair, in a not-so-clean manner, if you get my drift. So you see where I am headed...based on MY experience, I would not want to feed my dogs something that would give them such a debilitating illness....hence we are still on kibble. Whew.....such a long-winded way to say, could we please respect others' opinions, and lets not have an argument, and germs CAN and DO show up where they are not supposed to. And HF, I really like you....at least what I know of you  and I enjoy your posts. But that gd word really really bothers me so could we leave it out? Thanks!!!!!!!

How much of the time are your dogs outside? Mine have a new fence, so they can go out and play. They don't want to! Last night the Corgis were in for TWELVE hours, yet when I took them out they didn't even go pee; they sat at the gate waiting to come back in???? If I ~make~ them stay out, eventually they run/play/wrestle. They don't really do this inside; they're more likely to growl at each other, and lay around the house. The other half of the story is, my neighbors (the ones who stole my fence in the first place, and then lied for months saying they'd put one up) HATE the dogs being out in the yard. The lady yelled at me that they had barked (that day they did bark, the two times they were out, around 9 am and 2 pm) . The couple yells at the dogs out there, so of course the dogs "yell" back. Today a delivery guy walked back there, he could see me at the gate, and no one barked at all! Hope the neighbors were watching then! Well I just typed a very babbly story and erased it (K!!!) The bottom line is, it seems like the neighbors hate the dogs, and the dogs prefer indoors. But are they as healthy and will they get enough exercise, being herding dogs?????
I am beginning to wonder why everyone is looking for ways to distract other's attention from the topic? :-? Atleast, that's the way it seems!
Why are you?
Believe me...I feel pretty "Hammered" here!
And how often are you the one doing the hammering? You come blasting in here yelling at everyone, and expect them to respect you?????
I do have to ask (corgilady) why a vet would do this: " I believe he may feel that as a veterinarian, he should not recommend BARF for liability reasons."
Can you really not figure this out??????? If you want everyone here to "be nice" to you, then BE NICE. I believe the opinions run the gamut on this forum; there are people here who: are strong barf advocates, are so-so about the subject, believe it is "good"(meaning healthy) but still feed a commercial diet because it's easier or cheaper, and don't believe in barf at all. if you want our OPINIONS on the subject, why don't you do a poll? If you want research, do your own. And if you want to be treated like everybody's little darling.....then act like one. And great sleuthing, Mei-Mei; I still think the appearance of the other jb and this one is not a coincidence.
The best though is when the same dog mysteriously CHANGES his breed while in the shelter.
Yes and....when I got MY dog at the shelter, first he was a female and then he was listed as both!!!! :o He is a .....he. :D
It would be interesting to find out if, after WWII, the Puppy "Farmers" were subsidized by the USDA for raising puppies.
:o

Rowie, it is the site for my local shelter. Look at http://www.petfinder.org :D

 Somehow I knew I would be sorry I asked! I used to do Chow Rescue....could tell you some heartbreaking pregnant dog stories....
I once opened a can of string beans and there, on the top for God and everyone to see, was a Katydid!!
So did God stop eating his veggies? Ok ok my dad no longer eats the very bottom of an ice cream cone becuz when he was a kid there was a COCKROACH in there! ugh! Seriously....and back on topic  ... Romancing the Bone is too general to be taken as research. Strombeck is of course biased and does not address both pov's, just speaks from his side....so that leaves Belfield, who has written numerous articles about healthy diets for pets, and has a graphically detailed article ON HIS WEBSITE (http://www.belfield.com/article3.html) about the (terrible) ingredients in commercial dogfoods, yet stops short of recommending the BARF diet. I believe he may feel that as a veterinarian, he should not recommend BARF for liability reasons. I would say the "research" has just begun.
....did you know that in your lifetime you will swallow 10 spiders in your sleep?? so do you stop sleeping???
:o Well I might after THAT!
-
Deep.....not to be rude but you reaaaallllly need a new picture hon. :)
-
They are cheap entertainment, but it would sure be better if they could actually list the correct breed --- because someone may be looking for a puppy just like that and would not even consider looking at it because the breed is listed wrong.
Well exactly....or you could be like me and try to get a certain breed BECAUSE YOU WANT THAT BREED, and end up with something completely different <covering dogs ears as I speak>.
-
IAND this is so off the topic, but --- well never mind, it's just too sad to even bring up.
WHAT?????? YOUR PUBLIC DEMANDS TO KNOW!!!

Oh look!!!! Now ~those~ are cuties!!!!
Not saying anything about anyone....I would love to know who on earth decides what breeds the animals in shelters are....Sometimes when I am looking I just beat my head on the desk and scream :o ! I feel unless they have the mother or the father there or some REAL markings how do they know half this or that!! Like 1/2 Dalmation that has chow hair and dobie colors....I just do not get it....And if they do not know.....It's half Lab! Okay sorry venting!!!
hehe. I know what you mean Jacsmom. I was actually looking on that site to see what Corgis were out there. Right now my computer is extreeeemellllyyyyyy slow, and it thinks I should be moving the mouse to get it to load the site (? :o ??). So I click on a dog, wiggle the mouse awhile, waaaaaaiiiitttttt, and ....bingo.....the "corgi" is a lab or a gsd or anything else you can think of that has NO RESEMBLANCE to a Corgi. Sheesh. Did we lose our eye-rolling emoticon? Oh by the way.....last night I was directing the choir....and I realized: YOU KNOW YOU'VE SPENT TOO MUCH TIME ON THE COMPUTER WHEN THE MUSIC SAYS "WITH EMOTION" AND YOU THINK IT SAYS "WITH EMOTICON"!!!!

:o These puppies are at the shelter....they say they are eng. bulldog/rat terrier mixes? What in the world would that look like? Do they LOOK like bulldog mixes to you??? http://kobie.petfinder.org/TN11.1120427.jpg

MalloMar, You will need the rake-like brush as well as the pin-like brush. As a matter of fact I bought nearly every brush on the market when I had a chow, trying to find the best one. I even tried a cat brush! Also, don't ever let well-meaning friends talk you into shaving off the coat. Chows are double-coated and eventually you will ruin the coat if you shave it. Good luck! :)
Corgilady, I can relate. My rott is VERY perceptive to what I want him to do. If he doesn't know what it is initially, he works hard to figure it out, and generally doesn't forget it. My maltese on the other hand, is very in tune to what HE wants to do. He's taken a lot more work, and still isn't where I want him to be in behavior. And he still jumps on everyone. 7 jumping lbs. I can handle; 70?! no way
I know what you mean Jamie! My bigger dog is actually the "easier" jumper. I have been having knee trouble for a couple of weeks and decided to stop walking for awhile. WELLLLL turns out that the Corgis (who never EVER jumped until the BC arrived on the scene) jump and hit me in the side of the left knee, every time. Toby is such a porker that he HURTS and I think that is what's up with the knee!
-
Oh but he's so cuuuuuute. (that's what people say to me about my newest little terror. Just thought I would pass it on.) he's adorable....just look how he poses for the camera. I voted to rip up the carpet and put a mop in every room. That's what I have decided to do. Are you sure you aren't out there showing him how to pee outside????Maybe it's a little scarey! Have you carried the paper towels out that you cleaned the pee up with, so he gets the scent out there? Good luck!!!!!!!!! These things can be hard to figure out....
This worked well, and very fast for me. Every time the dog goes to jump on you, without saying a word, fold your arms across your chest and turn your back to the dog. He will probably come around to face you, and try again. Repeat your actions. As SOON as he stops and sits (which he probably will do) give him the attention he is looking for.
This did not work at all for us. :( We tried and tried. When we turned our backs, he just jumped on our back. Of course he also would *never* stop and sit! Guess they're all different, just like children.

 Yeah just stay here with the lowlies. At least we have a lot of fun.....
