Shara, repeat after me... Parlez en Englais, sil vous plait. Je ne parle pas Francais... (pronounced: parlay un unglay, see voo play. shuh nuh parl pah fronsay) (close enough!) translatoin - please speak in english - I dont speak french. I have clients in quebec. I find that if you at least try to speak their language, if only to tell them you DONT speak it, they are much more cooperative about it. there are nuances that cant be properly pronounced in english. but that sentence will get your point across... :D

Divine, you took the words right outta my mouth!! the leg shaking is an adverse glucose reaction. when the blood sugar gets too low, the extremities start to shake, and the person/animal gets confused. (I am an insulin dependent diabetic). I recognized the symptoms immediately. You need to take your little Chi up to six meals a day. Also, watch for "spastic" movements. walking backwards, head shaking, limb shaking, extreme lethargy. sleepiness. little urination. all are signs of low blood sugar. the poor little thing needs more food calories. Not your fault, that dog is too young to be away from mom, but now you have to make up the difference. for a short time, up to about 8 weeks, a high carb diet might work better. soften the food with a little milk. Cow milk isnt really good for dogs, but since moms milk is not available, this may help some. it will raise the carb and protein levels a little until he gets a little older. carbs burn fast, protein burns slower. he needs both. 6 meals a day right now is a must. for a little extra carbs, add steamed or boiled white rice. nice and soft. I think you'll find that helps. best of luck with him!!

"Oh I WISH I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener, that is what I'd TRULY like to be, OH OH...cuz IF I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener, EVERYONE would be in love with me!!!!" well, it's dog related...Hot dogs maybe, but dog related....            -
to an extent, I believe in that. I have often stated that breeding "only" for looks, or "conformation" is bad for the dog. You can only rein in the gene pool so far before you have auto-immune deficiencies, disease, and a weaker gene pool. I am one who believes that all show dogs should be able to show that they can "do" what they were originally bred to do. Herd Sheep, guard, hunt fox, retrieve fowl, pull sleds. I think if that was required (and as far as I know in the U.S. it is not) the breeders would be forced to vary the gene pool more, to get the desired "working" traits. Now, with Lap dogs, I dont know how that would go. But Dachsunds, beagles and bassett hounds should be able to show they can hunt. Foxhounds should be clocked at a normal speed for chasing fox (whatever that is, mine is field trialed, no good for show) Sled dogs should be able to pull. My lab mix retrieves better than most show dogs (after talking to show dog owners of labs, she also points, she's part pointer. Never been trained) my foxhound runs like the wind. (as seen in the pictures) both of them are extremely healthy and have no issues with genetic defects (yet). I dont like the current slope in the GSD's back, the narrowing of the head in the lab (lab's heads should be wide and diffuse, and their necks should look like cannons on their shoulders, for pulling fish nets to shore), or the almost white tones of the Golden Retriever. Goldens should be "Golden"... I think the narrowing of the gene pool is harming them. You cant be a physically strong individual if everyone has the same set of genes. a Small set of genes...the British and French Royalty tried it, and ended up with hemophilia and various other auto-immune diseases.

I have Allstate. I checked, although admittingly a long time ago, and the policy was that (here) if your dog failed the "3 strike" law in this town, and was classified as a dangerous dog, they would hugely raise your rates, or make you get rid of the dog. first strike is the dog bites, causing injury. the dog them becomes a "potentially dangerous dog". if it bites again, even without serious inury, it is labelled as a "dangerous dog" and is required to be completely contained and walked with a muzzle. If it bites a third time, you go to court. and the dog can be put down. Allstate's policy here was that if the dog bites a second time, your rates go thru the roof. or you get rid of the dog. If even on the first strike (due to city law) if the dogs seriously mauls or kills anyone, it is automatically classified as a dangerous dog, and the rates go up or you get rid of the dog. I'll have to check with my agent tomorrow to see if the policy has changed. It may depend on area of the country, and if BSL is closd to being enforced.

Just FYI...bassets, beagles and dachsunds were bred to hunt to the ground. both bassets and beagles hunt rabbits, dachsunds were bred for vermin. They needed those long bodies and short little legs to slither thru holes too big for other dogs. they werent intended to look "freaky", their form serves a real purpose. My foxhound has long legs, knobby knees, huge hocs, feet like a cat, and dewclaws. A foxhounds footprint is sometimes mistaken as a big cats. her feet are much bigger than the average dogs her size. My lab is physically larger, but has smaller feet, and no dew claws. so reasons: (from the hunt club) 1. Long legs, longer than normal for a dog her size....to empower her to run. this dog runs so fast that she blurs on a still camera. Her legs come together like a big cats, rather than like the average dogs. 2. knobby knees....her knee bones and cartilage are larger than the average dog, because she is putting all of her weight on them in the all-out sprint. 3. huge hocs. Same reason. Her ankles are larger to help support the intense amount of pressure being put on her feet during the run. 4. feet like a cats. her pads are larger and more spread out, to gain the most traction she can for the sprint. 5. Dew claws. For turn-on-a-dime stability, the dews will grab the earth and hold on so she doesnt slide. fox run very fast. in order for a foxhound to catch up with them, they need all of the above. same with the bassets, and the beagles and the dachsunds. that shape was for a reason, not just looks.

and I WISH my dogs would go down a slide with a bunch of kids. It looks like great fun. Dogs were meant to be with people, children especially. If they have been socialized well enough, and trained well enough, there are usually no mishaps. we are way too much of a "lawsuit society"...and the media has helped promote that beyond what I consider reasonable. When I was a kid, if I went down a slide with a dog and got scratched, I went home, put bactine on it and a bandage, and got lectured from mom about not doing stupid things. SHE wouldnt have sued the owner, **I** made the decision. I have never been bitten. but I have been scratched by peoples cats. Her response? "Stay away from the cat then..." The legal justice system has contributed MIGHTILY to this bullshit. NO ONE should be allowed to sue for a scratch. My mom was bitten by a pekignese. She didnt sue the owner, she just made pre-arrangements to have the dog put away if she was coming by. She DIDNT like animals, but she knew that they were animals and other people liked to have them. If the stupid frivolous lawsuits, like being scratched on a slide by a dog, were not allowed, then maybe some real thought could go into laws about people who own aggressive dogs and dont control them, dont train them. dont socialize them. To me, it seems that everyone here appears to understand their dogs, and what they can do. Not all Pit's are aggressive, nor or Rotts, or Dobies, or Shepherds. Not all Goldens and Labs are nice. Dogs are individuals, like people. They should never be classified as "that kind of dog". That's what I personally have been fighting. I also will NEVER give the govt any more power than they already have. They already have WAY TOO MUCH as it is. I own guns, Prim. Will I let the govt take them away? Never. I have never broken the law with them, they are kept safely locked seperate from the ammunition, and they are also trigger locked. Pit's are the same thing basically. People have a right to own them, providing they realize their potential and act and treat accordingly. we cant allow the govt to decide what we can and cannot do, to insure their next election or stop the law-suiting idiots from taking control.
***************** Can you clarify your thoughts for me, Courtnek? Because you seem to be saying some kind of contradictory things. On the one hand, you are claiming that people are lawsuit crazy and prone to filing lawsuits for nothing. On the other, you are saying you wish that your dogs would go down slides with kids they don't know and whom you don't know. Why? At the very least, you know that the PARENTS of those kids are irresponsible if they let their kids go down a slide with your dog (whom they DON'T KNOW). Why would you subject your dog to the possibility of the problems that irresponsible parents predictably could cause if some tiny thing (even a toenail scratch, as we discussed) went wrong? And then there is the constant mantra of pit bull people to "punish the deed, not the breed." But, hey, punishing the deed is EXACTLY what civil lawsuits are about. Of course none of us want our dogs to be accused of biting people when they really didn't, but guess what? A LOT of people whose dogs actually DO bite other people find it convenient to deny that it happened, and we have courts to sort out (to the best of their ability, which may be imperfect) what really happened. Do you have a better alternative? Do you think we shouldn't "punish the deed" unless the owner agrees that his/her dog bit somebody? Or maybe we shouldn't "punish the deed" at all? primrose primrose
no in this situation we shouldnt. Running down a slide is inherent with its own dangers, Parents should all know that. If there is a dog involved, parents should accept that too. If the dgo scrathes, so be it. Shit happens on a slide, with o9r without dogs involved. PEOPLE ANEED TO GET OVER THEIR LAWSUIT MENTALITIES!!! Kids get hurt on slides, with or without dogs. GET OVER IT!! or dont let your kids play on slides. Doesnt kill them to get hurt once in a while. ITS PART OF GROWING UP!! GET OVER IT!!! -
Free was rescued as a puppy, from a "mis-mating" that wasnt supposed to happen. Her onwer wanted to sell her as a "purebred" German Shepherd (with FLOPPY ears?) and once I pointed that out, she gave her to me for free, Hence her name. I found out later that the ones that did not get adopted were given over to the shelter...(GRRRRR!!!!!!!) Laurel was a field trialed Foxhound. Once retired, either the rescues adopt them, or they get put down (kinda like Greyhounds) Laurel the Foxhound Freebee, the Lab Mix. Christmas is Coming… Christmas is coming, it's that time of year, where everyone offers each other good cheer. Where presents are opened from under the tree, Children are smiling, and people are happy... But not far away, in 'most every space, are pets gotten rid of, unwanted, displaced. Their sad little faces stare out from a crate, They don't understand why their owners are late. They don't understand why they're in here at all, they patiently wait for their people to call. The call doesn't come, as the lights are shut down, They don't understand, they just want to go home. So this year for Christmas my wishes will be that each of these creatures will get to be free. To go home with someone who'll love them at last, and give them a chance to forget their sad past. And me, as I write this, I look at my two... the scared silly Foxhound, my Lab/Pointer too. And I think of how lonely my own life would be, If for some reason they were gone from me. I give them both hugs and then call the old cat... who of course doesn't answer, gee, imagine that! I tell them I love them, and I always will. I'll feed them, and keep them, from winters cold chill. and I promise them that they will never perceive the inside of a shelter on MY Christmas Eve!! It is copyrighted, since I gave permission for the area shelters to use it, and they said I should so it wouldnt be sold without my permission. You are all welcome to use it if you want. Geez..what a lot of work for a simple poem. But I didnt want to see it popping up on Christmas Cards without my knowing about it.    Not that it would, it's not that great, but oh well...

The majority of the Pit owners here are aware of the risks, and the responsibility. They all agree that the potential is there for possible dog aggression, but these Pits also all appear to get along fine. OUR BOARD HAS A LOT of responsible Pit owners, even if you disagree. And yes, my dogs have escaped. There is always that opportunity. The odds are good they will never bite anyone, but you never know either. You cant lock these dogs up in glass bubbles and never let them see the light of day. You just have to watch them a little more carefully than some other dogs. and I WISH my dogs would go down a slide with a bunch of kids. It looks like great fun. one picture is worth a thousand words. Show them pictures of overcrowded shelters, kennels. explain that these dogs may never find homes, some shelters are required to put them down after a certain amount of time. explain that a lot of these dogs came from just such a mating. explain that what will calm his dog down the most is to have it neutered, not to let it breed. you can use my Christmas Poem if you like, in conjunction with the pictures. best of luck to you.

a true "spay" is a complete hysterectomy. removoval of all the sexual organs. gone. surgery. I have heard of some vets giving tubal ligations instead, because it's cheaper, but it's not a true spay and the dog could still get pregnant. Happens with people too. I would find out what the vet charged you. and exactly what he did.

I got that quote from a book by John Fisher, a behaviorist, who I believe got it from a geneticist. Not all wolves look the same, by any means, and it was not to say the animal would become a wolf, but rather look more like one. The ears would be erect, the coat would be doubled and somewhat weather resistant, the snout would be long, like a shepherds. Now this would be a genetic mixing of ALL kinds of today's dogs, not just a few. All of our dogs originated from the wolf. His point was if we mixed them all up together again, the eventual result would look like a wolf. not BE a wolf. That would again take a long evolutionary trail.

Free lays with her back legs splayed behind her, and her front paws turned UNDER...I tried to imitate it, it hurt like hell...our hands were not meant to be turned completely under while we sleep. They seem to like it though...

I am watching a show I really like - Sue Thomas, F.BEye..about a deaf woman who works for the FBI and has a guide dog for the deaf. the theme song is a country tune. dont know the real name   but it talks about "Rosemary's granddaugther"... I was singing it when it came on...Freebee started singing along, and Laurel started to bay in time...I was cracking up. I guess THEY like my singing..

she's VERY pretty, but she looks kinda, well, grumpy....I guess I'm used to the famous smile from this breed. Hope to see pics with that Cheshire smile once she settles in!!

most of the time they dont. I have, in the past, sometimes gotten emails back from reporters who want to argue their point, and actually, after various posts, got her to admit that maybe her outlook was biased. to me, that's a win. I hope they respond as well, but I'm not holding my breath.

For a Christian Organization, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Pit Bull's do not have ":blood lust" after people. They were originally bred to be guaranteed to NOT hurt people. You had a bad experience with one, so they ALL are to be condemned? What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? A child down the street from here lost half his face to a Golden Retriever. So I guess we should condemn them all as well. Or all Lab's, because mine doesnt like strangers, or all Cockers, because they sometimes suffer from rage syndrome. Or all shepherds, because they are guard dogs.... Get over it. You cant condemn a whole breed on the actions of one, or a few. You should be ashamed of yourselves for throwing more fire on the already over-heated debate on Pit Bull, and aggressive dog legislation. I would have thought you, at least, in the spirit of harmony with God, would have researched before writing. These are God's creatures, as well. A very disappointed reader, Katy Courtney Elgin, IL.

I dont have my own website. but theres pictures out there verywhere...     just a flag clarification. the "English" Flag is the Flag of England. The American Flag is the U.S. flag. Even tho both countries speak english as their national language, it is two different flags. Hope that helps some. :D

the dogs got a smaller level of kibble then usual
that means you don't feed a home made diet exclusively tho, so you still have somewhat of a balance in there that isn't present as soon as someone feeds nothing but homemade food, regardless if it's raw or cooked. for example, take the concentration of different food types into consideration. a pound of dry dog food consists of about 85-90% dry matter, a pound of roasted chicken meat is only about 32% dry matter, fruits, veggies and prepared grains even less. feeding at least some fresh food in addition to kibble is always a good idea tho, it should just be within reason and no junk food. :)
thank you. that was my point. I personally dont think that dogs suffer eating kibble. I feed less on a "big" leftovers day, only for weight reasons. this was a big "leftovers"night. I dont think kibble is bad, but you have to make sure that ALL of the nutrients are there. thye dont have to be raw, they dont have to be kibble, they have to be a mixture of both. that's my opinion. None of my dogs have ever been malnourished. all of them have lived full lives, to old age, for their breeds.
-
OK MY dogs dinner, as I have fed all of them for 30 years, never with a problem. I made a roasted stuffed chicken. with steamed vegetables, the stuffing and macaroni and cheese. My son doesnt like stuffing. the dogs got a smaller level of kibble then usual, the roasted chickenthe veggies, and the macaroni (I dont see any real food value in the stuffing for a dog, or people for that matter. but it tastes good). some people willsay that' wrong. I have fed my dogshome-cooked leftovers for 30 years and never had a problem. comments? not trying to start a debate, just curious. also, there was, and always is, garlic in my vegetables. minced garlic.
