yea Shara, I think that's correct. the salt gets in and sucks up the water and then the leech dies, something like that. Ticks (here at least, not sure about Canada) carry Lyme disease, which can be very dibilitating if not caught and treated in time. it is often mistaken for arthritis. it requires massive antibiotics to treat. it's common here, because we have a lot of deer, so a lot of deer ticks. I think Lyme has been found to be mostly from deer ticks.

Mei is absolutely correct. It depends on the area of the country, their civil code, whether there is BSL in action, whehter Sams dog was loose on his own property, or wandered off to the property of the dog that killed him. Sam, I am sorry for your loss, but all of the above will be what determines (with a lawyers help) what the eventual recompense, if any, would be. Also if there are leash laws in your area, if your dog was loose the odds are good the case means nothing, since you would be in violation of the local leash law. You need to confirm all this with a lawyer in your area familar with civil code on dogs. and no, Primmy, I am not a law graduate. My father was a judge, and taught me alot about it growing up. even without a law degree, I can tell you the laws in every area of the country are different. Civil code is up to the area, not the feds.

ooohhh!! ooohhhh! I got a really stoopit one today!!! I took Freebee and Laurel down to the park by the river. Theres a bike trail and forest land and the river and all. It's a really pretty place. BUT its not a dog park, the animals have to be on leash because of incidents with dogs chasing joggers and bicyclists. but that's ok, I dont mind. I had them on their long long leashes, with their harnesses, and they were merrily trotting along checking thngs out. ok first a little history. Laurel has multiple scars on her head, neck and legs, from 6 years of hunting in heavy brush, and living in a pack. Not bad scars, little teeth and brush dings, tree branch pokes, that kind of thing. so, walking along, some guy walks up and says "what kinda dog is the multicolored one?" "Foxhound" "was it fought, or used as bait?" "neither, the scars are from hunting." "what'd it hunt" (Now, did I NOT just say FOXhound?) "fox" "Oh well, theres fox here at the river. Let it go I want to see it catch one" :o :o :o :o :o "no, sir, the hounds dont 'catch' the fox. they trap it and lead the hunter to it. The hunter then shoots it from horseback" "why from horseback?" "because the hounds run faster than a human could follow on foot" "well, let it go. I want to see it run like that". "Dude, I am not letting her go. she has to be on a leash, and I dont have a horse and dont want to spend the day trying to find her" "Oh, well then I dont believe any of it" (exit, stage left....) :drinking: :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

oh yea, and mine all hold title for being the most "aggravating during a neighborhood barkfest" since neither if them will shut up long after all the other dogs have stopped. And Laurel's bay in those circumstances, long, drawn out and very annoying, always gets first place.

The horror continues...............
both times were people who thought they could teach me by throwing me in the deep end
GOD how I hate people like that. I know they always tell you, for instance, if yu fall of a horse the best way to avoid the fear is to get right back on, but you got on the horse VOLUNTARILY in the first place!!! being thrown in a pool is not going to teach someone to swim, or get them over their fear of water. ***smacks these people upside the head*** Leeches, while extremely gross, dont bother me nearly as much as ticks. I learned the table salt trick at a cabin we were staying at. The Leech is nothing but a big absorbant ball. As soon as the salt hits it it dies. Never had seen one before, and tried to pull it off. MAN did that hurt. The guy who owned the cabin told me about the salt. This was in Michigan, I think. I was a kid and my parents rented the cabin for the summer. Ticks on the other hand, are harder to remove (thanks for the pad suggestion. I will definitely get some) and they are known to carry disease, which I have never heard about leeches. yuk.... interesting piece of trivia. Long before modern medicine people used to use leeches as blood disorder treatment. They thought that there was something bad in the persons blood and the leeches would suck it out. like on snakebite, if they got to it right away. Sometimes it actually worked! or at least, appeared to.... :D

I maybe 1/3 soaked a cotton ball and rubbed it on both feet. You could definitely smell her feet from far away. This morning I gave her her tablet and used a lot less and a paper towel instead of a cotton ball. Dont know if it was related or not, but I had a severe insulin reaction last night and ended up in the hospital for about an hour. the extract was pretty heavy on my hands since it soaked thru the cotton ball. My blood sugar was normal, but I didnt come out of it until they had administered glucose. Much higher levels than normal, so I may have been stimulated as well. I am monitoring myself today as well as her. If it happens again we may need to put out a warning to diabetics and diabetic dogs. It could also have been a coincidence, but I am not a big believer in them.

OMD!! HOW LONG DOES THE PEPPERMINT LAST? I'm thinking its definitely a stimulant..and she's over stimulated. Maybe a little less extract next time....she is following Kyle around, leaping in my lap. walked right up to him many times out in the kitchen. MUCH more outgoing towards him.waggin her tail gung ho...this is amazing. I've n ever seen her this outgoing...she's HYPER!! the real test will be when his friends come over. that's where the real fear has always been....I think I need to use a LOT less extract on her feet.... :o :o :o :o :o

GOOD JOB!! WOO HOO!!

awwww.....what a sweetheart. such a face!!!    Mei, thanks. I didnt know yu could give a dog karo syrup....

well, there is a difference...she never barked at the door. or outside noises. only when the door was opened and someone came in. then she would growl, bay and hide under the desk. now she is barking at the window at outside noises. like a regular dog. is that progress? not hiding under the desk. barking at outside sounds like most dogs. never did that before. not hiding. seems more confident. could this be a good thing? its different. seems better. seems more confident. guess I wont know till people come in. she is sleeping on the couch, instead of under the desk. usually, if no one is here, she sleeps under the desk and makes no noise, no matter whats going on outside.
-
if she goes outside, do I need to re-do her paws? I'm sure it will come off in the grass...
-
well, I'm trying it. I gave Laurel 3 mg of Melotonin, and wiped some pepperment extract on her paws. man, that stuff smells STRONG!! maybe this is aroma therapy, far enough away that it doesnt bring tears to her eyes.... I only did the front paws, do I need to do all? she pills really nicely, thank Dog.... You gotta have a battle with Free to get her to take pills...Laurel was cool. Put the pill as close to the back of her mouth as possible without scaring her and rubbed her throat. she swallowed right away, no prob. hope this works. well, Kyle always complains about her "hound smell"....now she smells like Peppermints!!

she's been giving her nutrical, and a little milk, because milk offers both high carbs and protein at the same time. I sugested it. she needs both. She was taken from her mother at 5 1/2 weeks and has shown typical low blood sugar issues. shaking, low water intake, low urination. I did say at the beginning some dogs dont tolerate cows milk well. I also suggested rice, both for carbs and water intake. the milk isnt working out, so I'm thinking the rice and the nutrical may be the best way to go.
-
she's been mixing (hopefully) a small amount of cows milk with her food. at my suggestion, she has blood sugar issues. we were hoping to stabilize her blood sugar this way. I knew it was a risk...but maybe worth a try. apparently, didnt work. sorry, Terra. maybe the rice would work better... she has low blood sugar issues.
-
I was the one that suggested milk, but some dogs dont handle cow milk well. You may be better just using the rice for a while... hope my suggestion didnt make her sick...
Ding dong, the jerk is gone! woo hoo! It truly amazes me how long some employers will put up with crappy employees. I saw many such cases in my previous job, until the person did something over the top, they were 'tolerated'. Too many danged people looking for work who are truly willing to learn and work, why put up with lazy, shiftless, untrustworthy idiots?
bottom line? because the lazy, shiftless, ambulance chasing lawyers will start up a lawsuit about it. ESPECIALLY if he's really stupid..."economically/mentally/emotionally/educationally challeneged man FIRED from vet clinic FOR NO GOOD REASON." something along those lines.... employers have to have a file 9 inches thick, with multiple, repeated, offenses before they can fire someone, or they get sued....   GLAD he did something just stupid enough to allow them to fire him. If he stole drugs, which I suspect he may have, he has no case. 8)

will it work for a dog that's afraid of people? it's not just noise, it's strangers. The melatonin says it's specific for noise. She defecates when she gets scared and makes a mess. she's good while I'm here, but while I'm at work she's as terrified as ever. the kids swear they arent bothering her, just sometimes something sets her off and she runs downstairs and goes on the steps. My son is furious. It embarasses him, especially since he doesnt allow anyone to bother her or touch her.
-
and I agree with all of that. NOTHING will stop it completely. However, the majority of people obey the existing laws. I will go with the majority of them obeying this one. MOST people obey existing laws, our country would be in anarchy if not so. there are always exceptions....

Izzy, THANK YOU!! you are a godsend to the puppy world. that face is irresistable. hope your friend falls in love....

I can take the bowls away from both of my dogs while they are eating. dog food. people food is a little harder. If Free gets something, she will cart it off to the living room and give you that "look" if yu try to take it back. I quick snap on the muzzle will make her give it up. Once I had to pry her jaws open, she had a t-bone she didnt want to part with. I never had that issue with Laurel until tonight. she stole a chicken breast bone (DAMN countersurfer!!) and I had to get it back because of the danger of chicken bones. she crawled under my desk with it, and I had to go after it. I was concerned, both because she could choke, and could bite. but she showed her colors. I said drop it, she didnt, I pried her jaws open and took it. she never even lifted a lip. (Free is not so gregarious) and then I rewarded her with some chicken meat for being cooperative. one less worry. yu never know what they'll do til it comes up and yu have to do it.

***just minding my own business, looking away, whistling, and thinking**** still havent got Mayberry RFD down (The Andy Griffin Show) but working on it. what goes around, comes around..... no pressure. but at some point,. this dog may do something for you you did not expect, if you keep him. If you find him a home, the aura of the good deed stays with you. remember that. either way, you did a wonderful thing. you saved him. what goes around, comes around.
