OK my take. Dont shoot me. and by the way, Shara is from Canada, who's laws differ from mine. I'll give you my take on US laws. I personally dont believe that anyone should be allowed to adopt ANY dog (not just Pit's) without a competency test. This goes for buying from a breeder as well. A questionaire, on your personal knowledge about dogs. The guide dog societies require it. They "match" the dog to the owner. Lifestyle, living quarters, exercise availability. I had to take one to adopt Laurel, and go thru an extensive question and answer process. Some people will say that will make people stop wanting to adopt, but if the breeders required it as well it could work. unfortunately, it could require SOME govt intervention to make it happen, and that's the sticky part. I am NOT a big fan of govt intervention. but that's where I think the stand should be taken. laws enacted to require people to prove they can and WILL take good care of the dog. punishment if they do not. "match" the dog to the potential owner, in other words. I also firmly believe that all breeders should be licensed. And non-licensed people should be required to have their dogs neutered. I WONT budge there. This would cut down on a lot of BYB. less BYB means less dogs in shelters. the liscensed breeders would have to prove they are breeding to the best possible standards for the dog. health certs, etc. This COULD work, if the govt would stop being so lazy and trying to find the easy way out. that is what I have been fighting for, for years.

that made me cry. all those people, and that man, had a Guardian Angel that day, in the form of a dog that gave love to the unlovable. Perhaps the dog somehow sensed this man's depression (they're good at that) but also somehow knew he was not all bad. How do they do that? Most dogs dont befriend "bad" people, they tend to become defensive. Yet somehow THIS dog knew.... I apologize to the non-believers, but this only reaffirms my faith in God.

y'know, that's odd now you mention it. I've had them on me, but can never recall finding one on any of my dogs. BTW, the easiet way to remove them is with simple table salt. just sprinkle it on them, they curl up and fall off.

ok where it came from? I have no clue. but we often call Freebee "Fruitbat"...it just stuck....honest.... Laurel gets called "wimpster" alot (cuz she is.....) and the cat? Name is PushyCat, but gets called "woos" all the time, although he is braver than any of them....

I agree with some and not all of this. I dont agree with giving the GOVT more power, and never will. But I do think the shelters, the breeders, and the sellers, should voluntarily require tests, and "matches" for people who want to adopt dogs that the govt considers "dangerous". It should NOT be necessary, but to save these dogs and find them the best homes,. it should be done IMO. It does not have to be invasive, just a simple form to be filled out that someone with knowledge has to go over to approve the dog for that adoption. I had to do it to get Laurel. I did NOT object. I know they were trying to avoid her being returned AGAIN. They were more questioning in her adoption, because previous adopters found her not to their tastes. after filling out the form. when I adopted her, I had to fill it out and answer questions. "she bays! have you ever heard it it before?" "it's annoying..." "she is afraid of people, are you willing to take her out and socialze her with strangers?" "she needs to RUN!" "can you provide the means for that?"... (MAN! does she RUN!!!) apparently they didnt do that before, with her, because she was really afraid of people, and bays loudly and continuously, when she is afraid....she needed more work than most. They made sure they found someone who would do it, and report progress. I think, in a modified form, this should be done for adoptions,. for sales, to adopt/buy a dog at all. Where is the education going to come from if the sellers/adopters/shelters dont do it? just my take, for the good of the dogs...

Mei-Mei is absolutely correct. I was so concerned with getting her fed, and getting her blood sugar normal, that I forgot that. Thanks Mei. The first 8 weeks of their life is "reserved" for learning to be a dog. from mom. and siblings. After that, they need to be socialized with people, so they can be well rounded pupsters when they grow up. you have another dog there she can possibly learn doggie stuff from, and that's good. my hound is an excellent example. She was raised in a pack, hunted fox. The club frowns on contact with people, wants them to bond with the pack instead. so at 6 they retired her, with no people social skills. I have spent a year socializing her to people. your job will be easier. she's a puppy, she will socialize easier at this stage. but she needs "doggie" skills too. Your lab will probably help there, they tend to be laid back and sociable.

what country is that? those dogs look bred more to the standards I think they should be. The Goldens are "gold", and not yellow/white (except for the one that looked like a puppy). The labs have the bulk head and wide necks. They look to be bred for work more than for show. the rottie was beautiful. I liked the flatties too, and the springer. :D

here it wouldnt be safe to have one, and also, that would mean I would have to remove the storm door, which would make Chicago winters very unpleasant. but if you put it closer to the floor, it will probably make it easier for your pup to get out. step over it instead of hopping as it were. definitely a good din for brother!!

oh what a face.....he is a bit lean though. needs some poundage for a Saint.... I think the rescue society is a good idea. People looking specifically for a saint I think would go there first. isnt that kinda on the smaller side for a saint? I mean besides his leanness? I always thought they were bigger than that.

      I moo at cows too DL....and I howl during the neighborhood barkfests. It gets Laurel into bay mode which is only funny during a barkfest.... fortunately, my neighbors are just as bad. They woof at their dogs, some others howl too. we cant stop it, so we just join in....

the only mean rottie I ever met was owned by some macho enormous Dude with attitude....I often think the dog picks up the attitude of his owners. The guy was mean too. this was at the vet. Asked me what Free was...I said Lab X. he asks "waddya want a wimpy dog like that for?" with a mean sneer on his face. *sigh*   most of 'em are big slobbery babies. geez, even Free likes them usually, and that's saying alot....

Terra, I dont mean to seem rude, but that breeder that told you it was ok to take her home at 5 1/2 weeks is a nut case. I have never heard of a dog leaving it's mother before at the earliest 7 weeks. 8 is better. that week-2 week stretch is very important in the weaning process. mothers milk is higher in calories, and carries immunity from mother to pup. they need the extra carbs and calories to grow. This is a small dog, they grow faster than large dogs, so she needs her calories and vitamins and carbs now. Big dogs seem to grow faster, beause they get so much bigger as compared to a small dog, but they actually grow much slower. did you increase her carbs? and give her some rice? she doesnt need it with every meal, but I would say 3 out of six, every other one. you can make a big batch in advance, and then put some extra water in it and microwave it to soften it. rice holds water too, so that will help her take in some of the water she needs. are her legs still shaking? poor little girl. stupid breeder....you seem to be taking good care of her. I'm glad to see that. she'll be ok, you just gotta watch her to the 8 week period, then you will probably see some improvement.
