that's true...I forgot about spelunking, I had seen that once. But bats are the primary transmitters, since they carry it but never get it, so it really doesnt surprise me. and while it makes perfect sense now that you say it, it might never have occured to me to NOT try to help a choking cow....but I can see how it would be transmitted that way too. I tend to think of rabies as being a "carnivore" disease, although I know logically other animals can get it too. Can deer? I asked that in another post, but it trailed off elsewhere..... where does the word "spelunking" come from? -

I posted this before, there have been RARE cases of dogs who have been vacinnated, and still carried the virus. "Typhoid Mary's" as it were... the animal still needs to be bitten, howsever... -

Striped Skunk Mephitis mephitis Skunks are more well known to most Canadians by reputation than first-hand experience. The animal’s best known feature is, of course, its ability to discharge twin streams of musky fluid from the anal orifice. It does this with uncanny accuracy when it feels threatened. Skunks are primarily nocturnal and have few natural enemies, the chief being the great horned owl. Other carnivores avoid them unless desperate for food. There is a popular notion that skunks cannot eject their musk if they are lifted off the ground by the tail. This is untrue.
-
HF I was just thinking that!! that's too funny!! after the skunk has been trained to warn off dogs not responding to recall, then it could be trained to stop animal aggression too....Does a skunk even have natural enemies? I'll have to look that up....  sorry about your dog. My malamute mix got skunked twice (not from failing recall, the skink was in my yard. The irony was this dog had perfect recall) and I did the tomato juice wash too. that's just a RANCID smell....

OMG....how CUTE!! I need a REAL camera!!!
courtnek replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
the few pictures I have are in the "new addition" thread. -
I would go with the frontline, alchohol can work, but if the dog has sensitive skin it will burn and frighten it. I cant use rubbing alcohol on my skin. even if it's not broken it still burns some

dont let her drag a slip on leash around, even if your there. It's too easy to get caught on something, and the choking sensation will put her off leashes for a while. wait til you get her collar to let her drag a leash. as far as the size, my guideline has always been no more than 4 extra holes. It gives her room to grow. At some point she may need another collar, but you dont want to start with one thats too big.

this was completely preventable. While I feel for the people. having lost their child, at the same time I am very angry that COMMON SENSE did not take over. Letting a 6 month baby crawl on the floor in the kitchen while the dog is eating? A dog is NOT going to recognize a baby as a "more dominant" household member.....he is going to defend his food. God, why dont people get it? THEY ARE NOT PEOPLE IN FUR COATS!!! They are ANIMALS!!!!    :drinking: :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

film for the camera, and extra batteries for the flash will be purchased tomorrow, and pictures will be forthcoming. promise!!!!    -
CK once you get her home, and settled (the first day will take some settling in) put a small two foot leash on her with a leather or web collar, and let her drag it around after her. take it off when youre not going to be there, or at night. but when your watching her, just let her drag it around after her. this will get her used to haveing the leash on, while not being "controlled" by it. It makes leash training a lot easier.

I am sorry if i made it sound like Boxers are a bad dog. They are not. It was this boxer. I dont want anybody to think that. They are a loving breed. I just happend to get a bad bloodline i belive. And for the dog that breaks your fence have you ever met the dog?? Just make sure that the owner does pay for his dog breaking the fence.
It's alright I was just making conversation I know they aren't all bad. I am just mad at my stupid neighbor. I have been in contact with lots of boxers and love them. But I am nervous about this particular one.
if you are nervous, you need to report it. maybe if yu told this guy HE has to pay for the next fence repair,AND you have reported it to animal control, maybe he'll take notice.

I have been watching TV in my room, where normally Laurel lays on her bed on the floor, and Freebee lays in the doorway. (easier to trip over that way - lol) at one point, Laurel got up and left the room. I wasnt really paying attention. I came out to check the forum, and found her laying under my desk. VERY odd, she only lays there when I am sitting here. hmmm.... so I posted a few things, and realized, I hadnt seen or heard Ford for quite some time. (the new Kitty) I looked on the couch, upstairs, downstairs, my room , the bathroom, no Ford. I called on Freebee. (She has already learned "find Ford" - she's so small she could be hiding anywhere, Freebee sniffs her out and lets us know where she is) She went to my desk!! Laurel is laying under the desk, fast asleep. with Ford in between her front paws!! I am going to have to get film for my real camera with a flash. this is TOO CUTE!!!

CK did yu spend any time with her? determine temperament? socialability? People dont often tell the truth when they drop dogs off at the shelter..... Will they let you take her and your beagle pup out together, to get an idea how she reacts, and how they get on? maybe put her on a lead and take one of your kids, see how she reacts to children while under control? yu need to be careful. I know you feel for this pup, but you need to do the basic "troubleshooting" first, to determine if she would be good for your family, and your beagle pup.... -
Cripes, NO! she expected a 7 year old to remember to take his own medicine? and put on his own sunblock? My kid is 17 and needs to be reminded of things now and then. and the way your dog is acting makes me suspicious that she may be the old school "smack 'em when they misbehave" type... no, I wouldnt leave your son or dog with her again. And I would not recommend her to take in another child. She would need some serious parenting classes first. I take it the dad probably does most of the work with the stepson....

My Free is somewhat dog aggressive. By somewhat, I mean she will take literally NO crap from another dog. She has never started a fight, but has never backed down from one either. She will stand her ground, nape will come up, growl will come forth, and if the other dog doesnt back down she will snarl. She has never actually gotten in a fight with another dog. Most of the time, they back down from her. Once, she backed down on my command from a dog offleash who wouldnt back down from her, and I could see the beginnings of a nasty to-do in the offing. For that reason, she is not usually allowed off leash. I took her to a dog park with Laurel (who is so laid back she would back down from a strange cat) and kept her onleash while she checked out the area, and the other dogs. Laurel was running all over, and I did let Free go eventally because she showed no hostility to any other dog. She spent her time chasing Laurel around, like all other other dogs (Laurel is an x-hunter, foxhound, and runs like the wind. she would entice other dogs into chasing her, then outrun them for sheer sport) Free spent most of her time just trying to outrun Laurel. that was GOOD day. A couple of other times I took them, and couldnt let Free go. Some dog set her off. I dont trust her to not fight, so she stayed leashed. would I have her PTS? absolutely not. I love her immensely, and leashed she is no threat to another dog. Would I let someone unknowing about dogs adopt her? Absolutely not. She has a lot of weird quirks. It all depends on the owner, and the dog, I think.

the lady vet I go to is a class act. she takes the time to pet the dogs, and talk to them, and treat them every visit. When I tool Laurel, she had never seen her before, and she was used to Freebee, who doesnt like vet visits no matter how friendly the vet is. She treated Laurel, and coaxed her on the scale, and then raised it up. checked her all over, Laurel was cool about it, she's very meek anyhow. She wanted to check her teeth, and asked me "do you ever check her teeth"? which is something I teach all my dogs. I sit on the floor, and say loudly 'TOOTH CHECK!!!" and then open their mouths and touch their teeth and gums. then I treat them. I almost got bit by a dog trying to check his teeth, and this has become a standard procedure for me. same with feet. when they come in wet it's "FEET TIME!" and I make them sit while I wipe their feet with a towel and do each toe and in between the pads. so Laurel was cool. Free, on the other hand, doesnt want anyone to handle her but me, so when she's at the vet, I open her mouth, I present her feet, and the vet checks. She will flare up at shots as well, so I take her head, and put it Under my arm (kinda like a gentle headlock) and face off with her while she gets her shots. If I am staring her down, she will meekly obey. the CHILL command comes in handy here as well. So when the vet met Laurel, she was like "So do you need to get into postion with her?" and I said "no, she's a big baby" and the vet said "I LIKE this dog already!" and started laughing.
