found this on a web sight is it true about female dogs???
courtnek replied to CKMILK's topic in Everything about dogs
I have never heard that either, however, there are known cases of aggressive females who dont stop being aggressive after spaying. they dont get worse, they just dont get better. there seems to be something called "bitch wars" between females, that doesnt happen among males, fixed or not. two females of the same approximate age/size, may square off and never give it up. it happens in packs as well. its especially prevelant, for some reason, among females from the same litter. in a pack it can actually become a fight, until a more dominant member (also usually female) breaks it up. My Lab mix Free is a good example of this. she is "Queen of the hill" in her opinion. Laurel is "peasantry", and among males that would be accepted. But Laurel, peasantry or not, will snap all over freebee when she gets out of line. as laid back and quiet as Laurel is, she will only tolerate so much. It's a girl thing..... -
bacteria tends to grow quicker on plastic bowls than on metal, as a general rule. My guess is this is a food bacteria of some sort, since the canines are touching the lip and thats where it starts. the bacteria is passing from the teeth to the lips. switchiing to metal bowls may help. if not switiching food may help as well.

my hound was adopted from a rescue society, not a shelter, who told me going in she had fear issues. she is not a fear biter, just a warner. she gets startled, bays and growls under her breath, but at the same time she is wagging her tail and hoping for the best. the best always happens, and although its been a slow process she is getting more socialized. My problem with Sue is not the test, and not the fact that the sheler has to use their best judgement to decide if they shoudl adopt or not, but thefact that she abuses the test to extremes. Every dog has its limits, and no dog, expecially in a strange place with strange people, smells and sounds, should be subjected to constant unending prodding when trying to eat. She pushes those dogs over acceptable limits while "testing" them. Hell, my Lab mix would bite her if prodded that way, and I can take anything I want away from her, and so can my son. She is abusing the test to make herself famous. It's all about Sue, not about the animals, in her eyes.

A questio for those of you with older dogs...
courtnek replied to Taurus and Jada's topic in Everything about dogs
T&J, this is NOT normal aging. Four is the prime of life, even in a big dog. Neutering would have calmed him down some, actually should have lessened any aggression he showed. should not have made him any less playful. Possibly there is an infection from the neutering? he needs to see a vet. -

the bite in question was an accidental head butting, not by the dog in question. Kids lip came in contact with dogs mouth, accidently during play. the dog in question was immediately sorry, and knew he had accidently overstepped his bounds. this was a situation where child tried to break up a dogfight. between two females who both want to lead. Thats why the decison has been made that the aggressor has to go. -
getting a new puppy please help me with what i need to get

Beasley..... Barbara Anne (I like the beach boys) Berkley    -
Beagles CAN be good apartment dogs, but I would NOT get a puppy. As mentioned, they do bay, the sound of which annoys people more than the average bark of a dog. But an older one, settled down, could work out. It would depend on the individual dog. I have a foxhound, and yes, she bays, but she is older (6) and only does it when someone comes to the door or she gets startled. It's an iffy proposition though, because you wont know until after you've brought him home. A retired greyhound is a good idea. They tend to be quiet. you have to consider your neighbors in any apartment with a dog.
I just think it's funny that your cat is alpha and plays favorites.
so do I. He's not so much "alpha" as he is "outta my way...."he rarely ever gets involved in their "doings", other than to demand to sleep somewhere they want to stand, like a warm windowsill. He generally ignores them. UNLESS they get in his space. Then he retaliates. He has never appeared to show favorites before. But Laurel leaves him alone (which is what he wants) where Freebee occasionally tries to start a spat. She always loses, so I dont know what she's hoping to gain, but that's Free....Pushy will simply whoop on her and run for it before she can react. He has his own room in the basement that they cant get into, because his food and litterbox are down there. He uses that to his escape advantage. Yesterday was a first. I have never seen him do that before, but I have never seen them line up for the water bowl before either. I wonder what they do while I'm not here all day?

I found this stuff called "instant dry shampoo" - you spray it on, rub it in with your fingers, wait a few minutes, then brush it out. they smellmuch better, but its not a bath and doesnt remove the essential oils. I bathe them both only twice a year. they need the skin oils to protect them from the elements, but Laurel gets "lanky" (musky hound smell) and needs a little extra. this works for me. :D
-
they do not get rid of fleas. they make them leave the dog, because the ultrasonic waves are an irritant to the flea. it doesnt kill them. they will simply nest in your furniture and carpets, and find a new host. including the dog once its turned off. Frontline or Advantage are a better solution. it kills the fleas and the egg larvae. dont waste your money. better spent at the vet, on a real solution.
-
actually, you get used to it. it doesnt bother me from Laurel anymore, I dont smell it. it makes my son nuts though, because his friends all point it out. I give her a "instant shampoo" spray bath, rub it in and brush it out and she smells much better. they shouldnt be bathed too often, like Labs, they need their skin oils to protect them from the elements.

oh Free's fine. just a nip reminder to keep her place. you have to understand Free, and why I think it's so funny. she is so FULL of herself. pompous, demanding, stands there looking like no one can touch her, then she gets whooped by the cat. she sets herself up for these things. she sulked for an hour afterwards, but wouldnt go near PushyCat. after all these years, she should know better. but no, not Free. She will always try to take every inch she can... she wants to be QUEEN. no doubt about it. she'd be dangerous as a human.... in a pack, she would be alpha female. AND ORDERING THE PACK MALE ALPHA AROUND....

get a hound, and you may change your tune about "dog smell"..."hound odor" is, well, not good. Beagles dont have it, but my Foxhound DEFINITELY does!!
Since when don't Beagles have that Hound smell! I thought my dog was just plain smelly until I fostered other Beagles. They all smell the same...before or after a bath they smell the same. Nice smelling shampoos are wasted on them! Glad you had a good time today courtnek.
I should have stated "some" beagles. You're right. I have seen beagle websites where they are advertised to be without hound smell. not sure how that's done though. maybe a specific breeding technique? dont know....
-
I read somewhere that the "smell" is actually encouraged, because the dog smells like a "wild" creature, not a dog. hence the musky smell. puts the prey off the track a little.
-
I have never heard that. I am new to Hounds, though, and learning alot. the "smell' Is a tarred, musky odor. I have read it is prominant in scent hounds, Whippets are sight hounds, like greyhounds. Most prominant in Bloodhounds, Coonhounds, Foxhounds (lucky me) Basset Hounds, SOME Beagles (dont know what the distinction is. maybe breeder?) but NOT in pharoah hounds (they are advertised as not having it) and ridgebacks. Those two may be sight hounds as well. I'm not sure. Maybe thats why they live outside in kennels so often. :D

       moral of the story - bring a 50 foot lead next time. I bring one whenever I take mine to the Fox River. They are not allowed off lead, but 50 ft gives them plenty of cruising room in the water.

FROM THE CAT!! PushyCat has taken a liking to Laurel. probably because shes so gentle, and doesnt bug him. both of them give way to Pushy, he rules the roost and that will not change. So Pushy was drinking from the water bowl (I have THREE bowls, they all insist on drinking from this one) and Laurel, although she has her own bowl, was waiting her turn behind Pushy. Freebee, not to be left out, came up and tried to push Laurel out of the way and "cut in line".... Pushy nailed her. Bit her on the nose, and hissed her (this cat is a sight to see when he's pissed) OUT OF THE ROOM. then stood "guard" while Laurel drank her fill. When she was done, Pushy raised his tail, lowered his fur, and simply pranced out of the room, allowing Free to drink (I dont think she was even thirsty, just wanted to get ahead of Laurel). I cant see, I am laughing so hard.... Oh Free, WHEN will you learn?

I like buff, those guys are ok, it's the Arnie types, the Mr. America's that I dont care for. Muscles should NOT be as big as watermelons, sorry.......   I also like to think that they EARNED those muscles. By hard work, at an extremely difficult and dangerous job. lugging all that gear around during a fire is bound to build some abs....I have GREAT respect for those people. and they're easy to look at, too... :evilbat:

X, I believe you have made the right choice. You have a "bitch wars" situation going on. Two females, neither of which will back down. It is actually more common than you might think. I cant tell you how many stories I have heard/read of males who can work it out, one will eventually take the back seat to the other, but females who will NOT budge. especially if they are similar in age and size. it happens in packs too. I guess the old expression "women have to work twice as hard as men for the same position" applies here as well.....I am sorry about Patti, and their inability to work it out. I have two females, but Laurel's basically a wimp, and still, even so, has snapped all over Free when she has overstepped her bounds. Free wont allow anyone but me to be dominant (and Kyle) and she would take on males as well. beat Alex into submission, and he outweighed her by 20 lbs.....it's sometimes funny to see little Laurel, so quiet and unassumingjust lose it and snap on her. They both respond when I stop them, but I wont allow Kyle to intervene, just for safeties sake. and he's 17. you'd just have to know Free. she's so FULL of herself that sometimes she needs a little "taking down". of course, their wars are all posturing and position seeking. I think in the long run, Patti maye happier as an only dog, especially since she's jealous of any attention you give the others. I am sorry this had to happen, but your son does come first, as you know. as mine would, if necessary. -
