well, we're back. the 14.00 I was quoted was just for rabies. the full panel is 40.00, but that's ok. that's still a lot less than the vets office. I couldnt get Ford's rabies yet - she has to be 16 weeks, and she's not yet. Still, at 84.00 (theres an additional 8.00 charge for Kane County, because the law here has mandated they have to give you the tag as soon as their vac'd, instead of waiting for it in the mail) it's still a third less then the vet, and the vet there did a minor checkup on both of them. Checked ears, and teeth, felt along the legs and hindquarters. all in all it was a good experience. the wait wasnt too much longer than I do at the vet anyway. maybe 15 minutes more, and its more entertaining cuz there's things in the store to look at. Free was SOOOOO good. (for her anyway, around other dogs) she barked a few times, but never growled, and mostly she barked at dogs that started growling or barking at her. DO, I saw **4** Boston Terriers there!! (one of them was growling at Free - lol) One lady there had a baby dachsund, and Free couldnt understand it at all. The lady was holding him the whole time, and he kept growling at her, and she kept turning her head like "what is WRONG with you?????" it was really funny. for the smaller dogs and cats, the staff would bring you a shopping cart to put them in. I would never have thought of that, I put Ford in one. Made waiting in line a lot easier. Then they let you take them out to the cars in the carts, which was nice. I couldve put Free in one, they're that big, but at 65 lbs I doubt I could lift her up that far. Someone asked me if I wanted to breed Free. No, she's fixed, and she's a mix, not a purebred. She was disappointed, said her lab mix male and her would make cute puppies.... Before I took this womans head off the staff guy who was doing the paperwork looked up at her and said "we offer discount neutering too...." and went into all the reasons why she should get him done. They have affiliations with different vet clinics (PAWS was one of them). Saved me the trouble and he was much nicer about it than I would have been.... Now for a question. It's been 14/15 years since I had a kitten get their shots. Are they normally kinda lethargic afterwards? :fadein:

Oh WHAT a FACE!! no wonder you kept him, he's soooooo cute!!
-
Sizzle, I had to do a triple-take on that pic. Because of where you're holding the leash, it looks like you're holding the dog by her ear!!   :o

They open at 2:30 CDT so it will be later before I can let you know. I agree the vet costs are astronomical, but I never realized how much so before checking this out. If there was something actually wrong with them I would not hesitate to take them to my regular vet, believe me. But since this is just shots, I want to try it out. HF, I could give them the shots easily, except of course, rabies. It would be easier on Free anyway, since I always have to hold her when she gets her vacs. I bet the heartworm meds are cheaper too. AND I have a petco card, since I shop there so much. I wonder if the discount applies to the shots as well? probably not. I'll call the vet on Monday and see what she thinks about my vac'sing them.... thanks everyone 8)

oh HF.......I'm sooooo sorry. You cared so much for him, he was happy with you and your gang. RIP Rocco.....farewell.

well, I tried to post this earlier. My son revved up the welder in the garage and the circuit blew...I have checked with other vets, and the prices are pretty much the same. I live in a city environment. Petco is the cheapest. My Ex decided to stop paying his child support (for which I am taking him to court, but that will take months to work out) and the dogs need their shots NOW. So I guess I'm gonna go tomorrow and see what happens....
-
sorry. that should have said "northwest", not "northeast"...I swear sometimes I am directionally illiterate....
-
I see where you're coming from Cassie. Around here, except in the northeast, there is very little paper milling. In my neck of the woods, most of the wooded area is actually forest preserve. It is never milled, and if they use pesticides at all it would be to protect the trees from being destroyed by some bug. Most of them are left alone. To grow and die in a natural environment. So while I would check into it, the odds are good that the heart and liver from wild deer here have not been "poisoned"...although now that I think of it, in past years they have sprayed the areas near the parks (people areas) with mosquito repellant, so that might need looking into.

frozen rags or old frozen towels worked well for me. I used ice too, but yours seem to like things soft (Freebee likes soft chewies too) and this worked for the teething phase. When caught chewing on something wrong, I used "bad" and then handed her a frozen towel. (People would look in my freezer and go "WTF?") :o
I feel very sorry for both the owners...this is a sad day all round..
Its like the misconception of Collies being like Lassie,
I may of mentioned this before but when I was small a girl at my school was missing for a while and it turned out that she had more than half her ear bitten off by the "lassie" dog at her house... :(
same with Labs, and Goldens and other dogs known to be "good with children"....a dog is only as good as it's training. Most people dont realize that the actors in "Lassie" never handled the dog, there was a trainer offset that issued all of Lassies commands. Same with the Dalmatian's.... this was a bad situation for everyone. I too think there must have been other issues with the Pit, but who knows? Maybe the JRT's just aggravated him enough to set him off, maybe fence running and such. The two Chi's next door aggravate the hell out of Free, Laurel couldnt care less, but they entice Free to chase and bark through the fence all the time. I am glad she has the other dog on a runner. poor things....all of them.

Freebee and Ford need their shots. when I took Pushy and Laurel in for theirs, it was 230.00 total, which included a nail clipping for Laurel. The shots at the vet always seem really expensive, so I thought I would look into Petco. They have a vet come in every Sunday to do vacs. I called and asked about the price, and its only $14.00 per pet! and $15.00 dollars for the nail clipping..... Now the downside of Petco is that it's first come, first served, no appointments. so I might have to wait, but the price difference is amazing....I am curious to know if anyone has ever done this and how it went. thanks

This has also happened to us too, izzy. Don't feel like a bad owner!! K got out about 6 months ago because a neighbourhood kid let her out (we haven't found out who as of yet...) She was missing for 5 hours before she trotted home, unharmed, and with a happy-go-lucky look on her face. What I'm saying here is that they usually know their way home. Thank Dog!
Geez I HATE it when K gets loose. I'm very glad that you found Tabatha Izzy. SHe will be one spoiled little girl. ( As she should be.)
      I am SOOOOO glad you found her. Too bad about the leg, is it going to be major surgery or do they have to install rods? I am glad she is back home and that wife is happy again. It's because of the kids here that I dont leave mine outside when I'm not home, although in the summer they would love it. Let us know how she gets on ok?

Northwest Kane. Lots of forest preserves, wildlife, close to the fox river, more wildlife.....although Elgin is a city by population standards, its also very wooded in many places. so foxes, skunks, possums, squirrels, etc. They take their rabies vacs very seriously.

The County I live in requires annually. They can, and will, take the dog away from you and impose heavy fines if its not done. I was late getting Pushy done, and they sent me a court notice, and I had to pay a fine. He's the least likely to ever get rabies, since he is only outdoors during the day when I'm here, and he never leaves the yard....

my ex is 6' 2"...exactly a foot taller than me. My mom made me wear these stupid 4 inch spiked heels for the wedding, so I wouldnt look so short. I ditched them right after the ceremony, and had the pictures taken on the stairs so I could stand a step above him and lay the train (or is that trane?) out in front of me to hide my feet. hmmm.....come to think of it, those were the only shoes my old dog ever chewed up. Think he knew something?

pick a date!! it has to be in a weekend, since I work full time, but I;ll meet you somewhere and Laurel and Divian can meet. (in the afternoon, please, morning doesnt agree with me!!  ) Laurel is SOO gentle. she would have NO issues with Divina, I'll bring Free too, but keep her close to me. once she is settled, she'll be fine too.
-
that depends on the dog. Generally, from what I have been told, they dispose of the vital organs (liver, heart, etc) and use the meat muscle for cooking. BUT!! some dogs dont do well eating vital organs. Youd have to test in very small quantities to see how the dog reacts.

I am sorry about the diffuclty seeing the pics. DO is right, for some reason they need to be posted into a seperate URL first (gggrrrr) Do, it's funny you should say that (and I LOVED hearing it) most AF officinados think Laurel is ugly, by AF standards. The dark circles around her eyes make her look sad. She is "old-looking" having spent 6 years hunting and has the grey hairs to prove it. and the scars. **I** think she's beautiful. thanks that you do, too... 8)

Ok now for the nutritional choice that isnt popular. my foxhound had atrocious gas when I got her. They were feeding her science diet, and Iams, and all kinds of mixes of dry food to correct. I now feed her Purina Lamb and Rice. mixed in with people food, rice, vegetables, dinner leftovers. sometimes canned food. no more gas. I would (personally) give her boiled rice, and see what happens. if no gas, then try the purina mixed with rice. slowly add other foods. I know a lot of people will say Purina is no good, but my dogs thrive on it. and it seems easy on Laurel's stomach. Freebee is a shark and could probably eat license plates, but Laurel's stomach is a whole lot more sensitive....
-
what she also failed to notice was that she was WALKING HER DOG...APBT's can be very dog aggressive. Would this Pit have attacked her? probably not. My guess is it was interested in the other dog, for unknown reasons. PETA and ALF use whatever means they can (inlcuding targeting small children) to try and get THEIR point across. Whether you want to hear it or not appears to be irrelevant...

I remember reading somewhere that bad people smell "bad" to dogs. I dont know how exactly to explain that, but there is some pheremone or something that exudes from people who are about to do something bad. Fear maybe? or adrenaline? no one really knows. But I would think it's similar to dogs who can smell out oncoming epileptic attacks, heart failure, and cancer. We cant smell any of those things. Somehow, they can. I saw a story on Animal Planet about a guy who lived near a park, and he would walk the dogs through this park. On one occasion, one dog suddenly sat down and refused to move one inch farther. He had no idea why, but the dog was adamant, he wasnt going. So he turned around and went home. He walked in his house, and suddenly collapsed from a stroke. The dog actually went and got the phone (cordless) and dropped it by his hand. He was able to call 911, although he couldnt talk the address comes up automatically on their caller id, and since he couldnt talk they sent an ambulance and took him to the hospital. How did the dog know this was going to happen? and that he had to take his owner home? How do they know? the only answer (and all speculation) is that they can somehow smell changes in the person. Something gets exuded that we cant detect, but they can. Dogs are now being trained to use that ability to detect insulin reactions, strokes, epileptic attacks and cancer. Who would have thought, back in the days when wolves decided to be our companions through life, that this would be one of hundreds of other benefits? Thats why I think if your dog ever thought you were being threatened (especially being a shep, they have natural guard dog instinct) that you would be protected. 8)
Cournek has had her foxhound called a pit (a viscous one at that, I believe)... of course, the guy was drunk... but still...
yes, this did happen. My AF was a Pit Bull to this guy, why I dont know. You see Laurel all the time in my sig...the colors? the coat? who knows.. but it makes me think that all Pit reports are not Pits..

if they can, get this dog to an emergency vet.
-
I agree with all of the above, call the police and report the bastard. However, realize this... dogs know the difference between a real threat, and someone just bitching because they want to bitch. Your shep may not have responded, because he could sense there was no real threat. yelling isnt necesarily a threat to them, unless they have been guard trained. thats training, not instinct. instinct lets them rely on senses we dont understand. Mine have reacted to a little guy who appeared harmless, who ended up being an escaped mental patient. Would I have thought this man was dangerous? he was posing as an AC officer. I would have let him in, I had nothing to hide. the doG, however, said NO!! their body language said "you come in this house, and I WILL HURT YOU". they realized this was not a "normal" situation. they responded. I didnt let him in called the police. eventaully he was caught and returned to the facility. sometimes, you gotta go with their instincts.
