1. ok guys? I dont see anywhere where DAL said she wanted a "teacup" dog, just a small one. Chi's Yorkshire's, Papillions, will fit in your purse. A big purse, yes, but still... anyone remember the ads for Rufus? the Zyrtec dog? he fit in a purse. a big purse, yes, but still a purse. and he was not a teacup dog... :o
2. I have read a number of threads that suggested using peroxide and water to clean my dogs ears. (Laurel is badly infected, but getting better) what solution? how much peroxide to how much water? thanks much. :)
3. papillion....papillion.....papillion....    that would be my choice of a small dog. But I dont think the size is really an issue Sharpei....I have two cats one a 4 lb. kitten, and they manage to stay out from under the dogs feet. The kitten is always underfoot, mine and the dogs, but she scoots by. And DO had a rottie and a Boston terrier. that's a big size difference, but the Boston got through it. Do you really think it's a big issue? I wouldnt have thought so, but I have never owned a small dog either....
4. HF, is there a possibility there is still sewage in the yard from the hurricanes? How fond are you of your grass? I would heavy duty bleach the Sh** out of it, and if it died, too bad.... poor Chico, and HF and Mr. HF!!! best of wishes to all of you. Hope everything turns out for the best....
5. where in Illinois Seij? That's my home stomping ground...and yes, wolf dogs are illegal here, although the vet suspected one of mine might have had some wolf in him, but looked the other way and treated him anyway. I think they try to overlook the rules unless its obvious that the animal may have aggression issues with the wolf part. I have heard that you can have them here, but you have to buy a yearly "wild animal" license, and its pricey. Theres a guy here not far from my house who owns siberian tigers.....
6. sent you Laurel. they are so cute!! I love her, despite her issues... 8)
7. luv u HF...and so will Peaches. Rocco sent her, I know that. what goes around, comes around. Rocco knew you were "her person" and sent her to you. He KNEW you could make her the lovingest dog on the planet. You will have a good time with her. I know it. **I KNOW*** how, I DONT know....
8. she IS sweet. She loves me entirely. Free is a "loner" type dog, not real lovey...Laurel is the lovey dog. wants petting, attention, head-in-lap stuff. Free loves me entirely, but in a more aloof way. I love both of them. and yes, I'm a glutton for punishment in the animal world. Except for Ford, all of mine were "unwanted" and due to end up in shelters or put down. I tend to take the "bad" ones, cuz no one else will. None of them are bad in my opinion, they just need a little more work. I am willing to do the work, and I usually end up with dogs that shine. :D
9. oh absolutely. Three times a year, because, as you know, my eyes are in imminent danger from this illness. I get the whole panel, dopey drops, blurry drops, sit in the office for a half hour afterwards so I wont drive. then the glaucoma tests. They scare the hell out of me, I tense up so they're wrong, and they have to keep re-doing them. I just cant bear the thought of something coming that close to my eyes....I had cataract surgery, and altho I was pretty out of it during it, I still cringed at the thought. No worry about ME putting drops in my eyes, I couldnt do it right when I had to take drops for the cornea scratch, and the cataracts...    My opthamalogist is great, very home town like. When I went in with the scratch, he asked "how did this happen" and I mumbled "mascara wand" and he smiled (trying not to laugh) and said "Just so you know, the mascara is supposed to go on the OUTSIDE...." with me he can do that. Weve been seeing each other a long time. Some people might have been offended by that, but I just cracked up and relaxed.
10.
Quote: The reason the thread got locked is because you were turning it into a circus with your endless pro-LOVE BUG posts. I started it as a discussion!
Sooooooo, according to her, "discussions" should never include an opposing side? we are all to agree no matter what? Maybe He/She is my ex-husband. He demanded that no one disagree with him, either... you can copy and paste this there if you want. with my full permissions... :o :o :o
11. gggrrrr....stupid pic site. *sigh* sorry. If yu right click on the ad, and then go to properties, then copy it into another browser the pic will show up.
12. I was reminded of this joke somewhere else, For those who havent heard it yet. A burglar broke into a house intending to rob it. As he was checking out the stereo and TV, he heard a voice say "Jesus is watching you". He froze, and looked around the room. Saw no one. Started unplugging the electronics and again heard "Jesus is watching you". This time he flipped on a flashlight and scoured the room. To his amazement, he found a parrot on a stand in the far corner. He walked over to the parrot and demanded "Did you say that?" and the parrot said "yes, I did". The burglar started to smile and said "what's your name?" the parrot replied "Moses". Now outright laughing the burglar asked "What kind of people name a parrot Moses?" and with almost a smirk, the parrot answered "The same people who named the 90-lb Rottweiler Jesus......" :D
13. I agree, but now for Devil's Advocate.... In this woman's case the dog was not just fat, but dangerously obese. Obviously obese. But most people (including myself til a few years ago) dont honestly realize when their dog is overweight. Free is a little overweight, although not obese, and I didnt realize it til a few years ago when the vet put a "proper vs. improper" weight chart up on the wall. with pictures. The pictures made the whole difference. Looking at that, I honestly would have said that a dog who's ribs showed a little when they turned, and who's waist was tucked in that tightly, was underweight!!   (I still always think "starved" when I see a healthy greyhound or whippet, even though I know better). Free has lost 4 of the 6 lbs of extra padding, and while not perfect, looks much better to the vet. I think she looks ok, and I think Laurel is too thin looking at her, but Doc disagrees and I'll go with that. I wouldnt have had I not seen that chart with pictures. Free did gain weight after being spayed, cuz I never cut down her food portions. Simple as that. Some of them dont need as much food after fixing, their metabolisms slow down, or they need a little more exercise. So yes, they can get "fat" after spaying, but not because of the spaying itself. My current vet (the lady doc, who I just love!) didnt spay Free. The head doctor of the clinic did, and he never once mentioned that she might need to eat less, or get more exercise. How often do the vets you know actually point that out? The lady doc did when I brought Laurel in, after telling her she had just ben spayed, she said "watch her diet, she's just right now but could gain weight easily." I said she looked a little thin, and she gave me that "look" (she can whither people with a look, and she's just a tiny thing) and said, as if she was reading my mind "she's a hound. her ribs are supposed to stick out a little like that when she turns" I asked how she knew I was thinking that, and she said "most people see ribs and think 'starving'. Not true in a dog." I just wonder, since the first doc said nothing about weight, how many people actually get educated about a dogs weight after neutering?
14. OG, dont worry. I never put anything like that in my eyes. I'm a diabetic. Any medication I take (even over the counter) has to be "approved" first, by my Endocrinologist and my Opthamologist. Especially if it has anything to do with my eyes, since blindness for me is a real possibility. I have scratched my cornea in the past, and that is so painful it's not even funny. the eye patch looked a little humorous though....   If I had to hear "Gaarrrrr, Matey.." one more time I was gonna kill somebody....   but anyway, I was laying on my side, one eye was pressed into the pillow and he was rubbing on the other. I know I am allergic to cats, this same thing happened when I first got my other one. It will go away over time and exposure. I am allowed by both doctors to take Benadryl for this. Claritin doesnt work for some reason, even the prescription strength. I will ask about Zyrtec. But not to worry. It's ok as long as I dont touch my eyes after petting her, and dont ler her rub on my face. HF -
15.
I do also have a ?. If they are bred outcrossed, how do they get the dog that they outcross to another? Are the dogs being outcrossed inbred, linebred or combos of both being crossed?
I dont know the answers to any of your questions. I am not involved in any kind a breeding, trialing or showing. What I answered was what the Hunt Club told me. So its possible the answers are not accurate, I wouldnt know (  ). From what I have gathered, there are a number of Foxhound Hunt Clubs around the Northern Illinois Area, and some in WI and Michigan. There are also quite a few in England as I understand it. I would assume they meet up and make breeding arrangements with each other, but I cant assure you of that. I have no papers for Laurel, although I have been told she is purebred. Maybe this will help. I didnt adopt her because of her breed. or her looks, or anything else. I was looking for a dog that would get along with Free, who is a very dominant "my-way-or-the-highway" bitch (no pun intended) and was having a very hard time finding one. I stumbled across a web shelter that had links to a foxhound rescue society. I looked at the pictures of the dogs, and the descriptions, and they seeme like they would be a good mix. Required another animal to be with them unless I was home all day since they are raised in packs. Good with kids and other small pets (I have cats too) etc. need fenced in yard. I had all the requirements, so I called and went to go see them. They "leaned" me towards meeting Laurel. She is not as pretty as most of the foxhounds you see (her pic is in my sig) and she has sad eyes and fear issues. and ear infections. I felt bad for her almost immediatley. She had been adopted out and returned, and I was getting the impression from these people that this was her last chance. Free liked her. she liked Free. I lost my heart to her and here she is. Has she been a lot of work? yes. Has she been worth it? Definitely. "that's my story and I'm stickin' to it"
16. Best of luck and drive carefully! hope tp hear from you soon! :D
17. "why, how, you picked the dog you got" with Free, she was a puppy doomed to shelter life ( a lot of her siblings ended up there) she's a "accidental" mix. Laurel? she is a retired hunter. The Clubs turn them over to rescue, to be adotpted. If not for the rescues, they would be put down once their "usefullness"to the Club is over. "how important was Pedigree, Blood Line, Breeding?" NOT AT ALL.
18. thank you Cassie. if you could, I would like the sugar recipe. I had to laugh at the other one. Barrington, IL. is a half hour away from me.... and you're in Canada. if you need anything from there, let me know. I'll go get it and ship it to you.
19.
I hope the home remedy fixes Laurel's ears up. Ear infections can be nasty and uncomfortable, I have seen many good natured dogs get very irratated and cross due to ear infections...they hurt. You should have Laurel's eyes and ears checked if you think there may be a problem. I will add though that I surprise my dogs all the time, if I approach from behind them and they have great hearing and vision. With Beau & Athena I walked up from the side of them and scared the heck out of them  It looked as though Beau was going to do the Freddy Flinstone run  I find with a dogs vision as a predator thier eyes face the front so there fore they focus on quick moving objects etc best from a frontal view. I have seen the most wonderfully sighted dogs not even notice a rabbit laying in front of them. The rabbits are wise enough to know that if the dog doesnt smell them that if they stay very still the dog probably won't notice them. Its when the rabbit moves and runs that the dog begins the chase. I also play hide and seek with Beau and Athena (my Newf's really suck at this game). If I stand real still and the wind is blowing away from the dogs...my dogs have a hard time spotting me...Athena has it figured out as she will go to ground and track me...Beau just kinda runs around mystified as to were I went...and most times I am standing right in front of him hiding in some bushes. Believe me, my dogs have the best of all the senses and I can still confuse them by working against the natural way they hunt.
her ear infection is horrible. the vet tried drops, flushes, etc. it never went away. she got people antibiotics and its slowly starting to drain out when she shakes her ears. My vet said its been there a long time (before I got her) and was never properly treated, so its deep seated. she suggested looking for a homeopathic remedy, although she would not suggest one. (the main doctor there is totally against home remedy. wants every dog brought in for a hiccup. I think she's afraid of him) so I wil try it. Her eyes have been checked, by myself and the vet. There is a loss of peripheral vision (vet says due to her age and previous life, she was a pack dog with other FH) she's 7 now. so she is sometimes easily scared and startled. even the kitten will scare her, when she jumps up out of the blue and goes into zoom mood. she is better since I have started this major fight against her ear infection.
20. I have come to the conclusion that Laurel's baying/growling problems are due to the fact that she doesnt see real well (peripheral is bad) and also doesnt hear real well (nasty ear infection, slowing clearing up) she startles at strange sounds and when people come in. Kyle came down today and pet her before she noticed he was there, and she was ok. I'm going to get the stuff today to try to naturally get rid of the infection. It's much better, but its not gone. thanks everyone. 8)
21. Ford likes to sleep with me in the morning. Usually she lays down by my side, but this morning she was doing the tail-waving-dance and rubbing all over my face. Inside of 10 minutes my eye (the one she was rubbing on) was swollen shut and itching. itching so bad I couldnt stand it. A cold washrag and some benadryl took care of the itching, but it was still somewhat swollen when my sons girlfriend came by. I had already explained to him. She said "Whats wrong with your eye?" and I said "Im allergic to Ford. She was rubbing on it". she likes Ford alot and said "Are you going to take her to a shelter?" she looked horrified at the thought. Kyle pipes up with "MY mom? are you nuts? she'll live on Benadryl if she has to..." and I cracked up, because that was exactly what I was thinking. Dont think it will be necessary, I just cant let her sleep near or rub on my face...
22. I didnt vote. I have two dogs. My Lab X is mostly lab, with some shepherd (we think) and GSP ( from her head shape and coat quality) and was a rescue (as a puppy). My Foxhound is a purebred, but field trialed, not show. The Hunt Club says they are mostly outcrossed, for hunting purposes, because in and line breeding is used mostly for show dogs, and they get better hunting results breeding two excellent hunters from different lines, etc. They also said this is not true of every dog, some are linebred, but not inbred. They tend to agree with me (with some hesitation) that inbreeding may well be responsible for many of the personality and aggression problems that we see in a lot of dogs today. They wouldnt be quoted on that however.
23.
China definately shows a dislike/mistrust toward men in general, loud people, blondes, overweight people, and anyone who is abnormally tall or short.
**sigh** China will never like me. I am blonde, somewhat pudgy, and short.... 8) the hat thing is actually documented. I dont know if its ever been explained. some dogs hate people in uniform, but I have always thought that was because of the mailman in the old days (or like my 140 yr old house) when the mail was delivered right to the door or mail slot. they seem to recognize a uniform and take that dislike to all people in uniform. which might explain why cops are so leery of dogs (the good ones, not the shoot-first-ask-later ones) I dont understand the hat thing tho. If the dog has never been frightened by someone in a hat, I dont know why seeing one upsets them so much... :o
24. really neat. where was this DAL? at a park or center or something?
25. I have actually heard people ask for that "nice flowery stuff" when they bring the dogs in for baths.   I prefer the smell of the clean dog, clean fur has a unique and comforting smell to it. Oh and Brighton's a husky mix, not malamute. I was thinking of Jarvis when I posted it. I have used herbal essence on my hair, I like the way it smells on me, but not on a dog, and they obviously dont like it so why do it? I thought the fresh weed cuttings would help get the flower smell out quickly, since they were still full of plant sap. So Brighton is no longer really "clean", but he's happier. Sara said she spent two hours brushing him afterwards. the way I understood it, perfume was invented to cover up body odor way long ago when bathing was not a common practice.....
