it seems like all the black dog owners around here (including me  ) have red collars on their dogs. Free's however, has her name imprinted on the collar itself in big black letters, with her phone number. You can see the print (even if you cant read it) from pretty far away. It's obvious something is printed on the collar. I havent seen any other black lab dogs around here with one of thsoe collars. I have a blue one for Laurel as well. The laws around here are pretty stringent about rabies tags. so I never let mine outside without their collars on, in case they somehow get out. Just wait and see how the other neighbors react. If she doesnt stop griping, get Kevins sister to tell her what really went on. Some people just dont like dogs, and go out of their way to make an issue out of it. Unfortunately, black dogs and Pits seem to get the most of the flack.

While I agree with some of the "pack rules" methods of training (and not for all dogs, either. Some never need it. Others require a stronger owner/hand in the situation) this is not something new. It's a training method that has been around for decades. Pack training is very similar to NILIF, in a lot of ways. You, the owner (or Alpha, however you want to look at it) assures the dog obeys before "earning" anything, the same way a pack lead rewards for obedience and excellence from the other pack members. It does not require punishment, and unless challenged, the pack lead rarely ever punishes anybody. He has underlings to keep the pack members in line, if necessary. Its usually only in the lower ranks that squabbling goes on, and its also more show than anything else. Also, in a pack the wolves reach a level of adult maturity. It is believed that our dogs never make it past the wolves version of adolescence. They remain "children" their whole lives. So pack training, and NILIF, works very well for them. Most of us are Alpha's without realizing it. We expect the dogs to act in a certain manner, and if we teach them what they need to know, and reward them for it, they will do it. Of course, dogs are individuals as well. Depending on breed, there may be some things they dont learn as quickly, or as voluntarily, as others. You have to take the whole dog into consideration, like what it was initially bred for for example. We cant remove their breeding characteristics, but with patience we can usually work around them.

I couldnt find anything that said that, but I did find a site that said that dogs whiskers, like cats, are very sensitive and help them in hunting and playing.

If it's a pound it could well be receiving govt. funding, in which case you can call the Mayor, the city council and the governor's office with your concerns if the pound itself wont help you. It may well be a matter of limited funding being available to repair the kennels. DO you have any friends, or are you yourself, any good with home repairs? That fence can be fixed fairly easily with chicken wire and chicken wire posts. as a workaround, not as permanent fencing, but at least the dogs head wont get stuck in it. Maybe start a fundraiser? There's a number of things you can do to try to help. And thanks for wanting to help!

unless your dogs running a triathalon every day, never go by what it says on the bag!! Laurel is 65 lbs and gets 2 1/2 cups a day, 1& 1 1/2 twice a day. Freebee is 75 lbs and gets 2 a day. The evening meal is mixed with a small amount of canned, or leftovers. Laurel's metabolism seems higher than Free's, so she eats more even tho she weighs less. then there is the milk bones as treats, and the mooching they both do off my son. The dog usually ends up getting more food than you think, without our even realizing it. 8)

I would try to get Kevin's sister to come over and confront her with the evidence. You are very correct that black lab dogs look very similar. Free has been blamed for similar things when she had never left the house/yard. There seems to be a lot of black lab dogs around here, and I think one is allowed to roam. I see it every once in a while, and it does look alot like Free (she's a mix). I think just to be safe I would also call animal control, and tell them what happened and that it wasnt your dog. Also explain to the neighbors that you were out of town, how would the dog have eaten in that time, and does she look haggard, or thin, or like she's been out all the time?

awww....Marley looks like PushyCat...same coloring. same lack of fear. I think the whole "dogs hate cats" thing is overrated. Dogs chase cats outside because they run. They'll chase anything that runs. But bring the kitty in, and then its different. My dogs are both scared of PC...and they tolerate Ford just fine, as obnoxious a kitten as she is. She eats out of their bowls!!
she told her to check my references which came back "A-1". I'm assuming that is a good thing!
either that's an excellent rating, or they're really into steak sauce....    (sorry, couldnt resist) You will get Tater. With a rating like that, and all the interest you've shown, they'd be foolish to pass you up. He's really a sweetie! 8)

       or a foxhound. the white hairs are on every piece of clothes I own. They blend into the floor, unlike Free's black hair... 8)

they can be trained, but it takes a long time and a lot of perseverence. PC is trained, but it took almost 2 summers. He doesnt want out in the winter. I would go outside with him, put him on the porch, tell him YARD (the command to stay on the property) and as soon as he left the property I would pick him up and say NO loudly, then put him back inside. He learned, after a long time. to stay in the yard, back or front. Now all he does is sun on the porch. He is actually better trained about than the dogs, I dont let them out front. Ford is a kitten, and wants to explore. PC wont let her leave the porch. She has learned very quickly to not disobey him, which I think is funny because the dogs dont either. So I think she'll get trained faster than he was. The kids are in and out of the house all the time, and not as vigilant as I am about watching Ford. She will do a screaming run out the door if she gets the chance. So I am training her to stay around the property.

well, Ford is an escapist. Kyle is a teenager who thinks she should be letout. I disagree. "let out" if they will stay on the property is one thing. "let out"to roam is another entirely. So Ford is being trained to stay on her territory. My back yard, and the front yard up to a certain feet limit. I traine PushyCat to stay here, I WILL train Ford. She has been good so far, does not run off, stays in the perimiters, but I'm always there. PushyCat and her wrer out front, on the porch, and she stayed put. I think PC will be a great help with this. He wont let her leave, and she doesnt if he is there. She wants to wander if he isnt....

do you have any pine trees near you? with the stupid stinging "get-stuck-in-everything" needles? (like xmas trees) cut off a section of needles about 4 inches wide and deep. about 5 of them. place them in boiling water and let them boil. The oil in the needles will come to the top. you will smell pine. when the smell is at its strongest, use a skim to pull the oil out. Put in a bottle, or the swiffer cannister. add hot water until it smells like a christmas tree. not too strong, not too weak. spray on surfaces and wipe away. It has amazing qualities for cleaning. the water has to dillute it enough to make it more liquid than oil, but it can literally clean anything. even grease on the stove, and crayon on the walls. it is not a disinfectant though, so toilet cleaning wont work. I clean my hardwood floors with it all the time. And the tiles in the kitchen and bathroom.

*sigh*...well, I spent all day driving to pharmacies and looking for the Gentian Violet. Nada. Finally came home and searched the walgreens website. I had been at walgreens already, thats where I got the isopropyl alcohol and the boric acid. They had a listing for gentian violet powder, so I called the Walgreens near my house and asked if they maybe had it in liquid. She searched, and said "yes, it's in the Spanish aisle." *sigh* why didnt I just ask the pharmacist while I was there? Anyway, I'm going over there later to get it. I would never have thought of the Spanish aisle, since I dont speak or read Spanish....The lady on the phone was pretty funny. She asked "out of curiosity, what are you going to do with it?" and I said "make an earwash for my dog" and she says "Blue Power treatment, eh?" ARRGGHHHHH..... maybe I shoulda just called and said "I need ingredients for Blue Power Treatment......"
