oh I have nothing against cording. That Komondor, and the poodle in your picture are very pretty. But the dog Kat showed looks like it ran into those twisty brushing arms in a carwash. and dried that way...the head fur makes me think he had his head out the window on the drive home...

I'm sorry, but that dogs looks like it walked thru a carwash....what is the purpose of that coat? is it more waterproof? warmer? it's certainly not becoming, IMO... :o :o

thanks Matty. one other thing...Matty is right about not physically trying to stop a dispute. In the Chi's mind, you are a "lesser" trying to break up a rank dispute. In my years of breaking this behavior, I have found that stomping your foot HARD ont he floor (if not carpeted, even better) or smacking something hard on a hard surface if you dont have hard floors (like a bat against the doorframe) will startle them enough to stop. Then you step in between and stop the fight, without getting bitten. Standing above and in between will almost always make them stop. Then you send them to their respective "timeouts". You dont allow them access to each other. A baby gate will help here. in the meatime, you continue to train the Chi in pack rules. lavish reward for obedience, no priveledges AT ALL for disobedience.

its not normal behavior for most dogs, but it could be normal for a dog trying to climb the pack ropes. if she is being aggressive towards you, then she has gotten too big for her britches. NILIF, coupled with pack rules, might help you now. You need to demote her below you, and then let her work it out with the beagle. I have said this before, and gotten flack for it, but its always worked for me with a dog who thought he/she was above me on the rank scale. 1. Do not let her sleep on your bed or furniture. dont let either of them, until the pack rules have been worked out. 2. eat before you feed her, even if its only crackers. let her see you doing it. 3. do not feed her from the table. make her lay down in a different room (both of them actually) 4. do not let her enter doorways before you. In a dogs mind, the alpha leads. she should follow YOU. both dogs should, to get get good solid rules. 5. if you have an upstairs, dont let her sleep on the landing upstairs, looking down on you. Make her stay on your level. I have used all and even some of these things to stop dominant behavior in dogs. Once your Chi accepts her "lowered"position in your pack, you can reward her by letting her come up on the bed and couches, giving them treats, etc. but ONLY if they obey your comands to get down, or stop. sometimes these things have to be reinforced with a really headstrong dog.

Gold Coast Council Seize Quadriplegics Dog
courtnek replied to pitgal's topic in Everything about dogs
agreed, and that brings up a scary thought. What if someone decided Labs and Shepherds were "dangerous" dogs? Shepherds have crossed that line before, and been labeled as such. So what happens to the seeing eye dogs (many are labs, goldens and shepherds), and the police dogs, and the rescue dogs? do blind, deaf, and non-ambulatory people (like this gentleman) lose their assistance dogs? because somewhere else, a dog "like that" bit, injured or killed someone? BSL has to be stopped, for this reason alone.... absolute power corrupts absolutely..... -
Coastie, look at this from a different perspective and see what you think. Your "baby" is a beagle, a non-aggressive, pack type dog. Likes to be around other dogs. Likes people too. Unless a hunting scent draws him out, he's pretty laid back, although noisy (I have a Foxhound.noisy goes with the territory) enter the Chi. A more aggressive, persistant "I want my way" dog. The only position in the pack he wants his head dog (under you) and he sees no resistance from your beagle. Is your beagle resisting? or just ignoring, or going along with it? if he is ignoring/going along, he is content to let the Chi be head dog. The pack places have already been drawn, and finalized. The beagle gives over to a higher dog in the pack. Chi's are very aggressive about things like this, even in one dog homes. They need positive training to get around it. My foxhound gave over to Freebee, first day. Altho she can outrun the lab 10 times over, and compete with her in every trial, she backed down gracefully. It's a hound thing. they are natural pack animals, by breed, and they will back down to another dog they feel is the stronger leader. So even tho the beagle is your baby, you are upsetting the so far defined natural order, by showing her more attention (in the Chi's mind). Matty has the right idea. NILIF, applied consistently, and give the Chi the firsts. Once the natural order has settled down (in both their minds) the griping over attention will stop. I sincerely doubt you will ever be able to raise your beagle to a level above the Chi, they're too willing to back down in the hound societies. This is NOT a bad thing. The beagle wont feel left out, it appears he has already accepted the situation, unless his respoinse is different than what I understand. Once the heirarchy has been established, you can treat them both the same. If neither ones feels there place is threatened, neither will object to you lavishing your attention wherever you want. hope that helps some.

you can get baby gates that actually attach to the frame of the doorway, and can be opened like a regular door. much easier in my opinion.

drjeffrock, I have to crack up every time I see that sig. The smaller dog does NOT look happy about getting the ear cleaning...
I wonder what the percentage of Pit bulls are that were involved in attacks that were actually just misrepresented mutts/bully mixes...
actually, at least here in the states, more often than not. I just want to go screaming into the nite when I see news stories about "vicious Pit Bull attacks" when the dog is a boxer, or a Pit mix, or something completely not real Pit, like a Mastiff/Pit cross. From what I have read and been told, NO true Pit Bull weighs 90 lbs....the sad thing is, until coming here, and bothering to learn, I would have believed that those dogs were Pits. another funny cat story. My ex adopted a Manx (tailess cat, although this one has a "bob") and the lady who adopted him out runs a cat sanctuary and adoption service. She remembers adopting 3 out to a woman in the area, and then seeing ad's in the paper for "tailess linx's..." she took them back. One of them was the cat my ex adopted.

he's almost 18, but very stubborn. The really funny part (which PO'd him even more) was I took the bone out of his glass and handed it to her. YUMM! tastes like MILK!!    he filled himself a new glass, grumbling at Free the whole time...

OMG my kid hates me cuz I'm laughing my a$$ off right now. I have told him repeatedly not to eat his dinner on the couch. Too easy for the dogs to bother him, and nowhere to put his plate and glass if he has to get up. So, he has his milk glass on the floor, plate in his lap. Freebee picks up a piece of bone, about 2 inches around, and DROPS IT IN HIS GLASS!! He starts yelling, and I just cracked up. She stood there looking at him like "Isnt this COOL?" his yelling doesnt affect her, she's used to it.... SHE thought it was funny (and so did I)....

it is remotely possible that he could have SOME wolf in him, although from the photo you cant tell that. My hound has a narrow face and long jaw!! also, why was his paw still hurting? Did they take it to a vet and have it checked? was there no cast, bandage, any sign of being properly cared for? I feel very bad for the kid, but no one should approach a dog who is injured, and in pain. Even laid back dogs get upset when injured and handled. Thats why they always say never approach an injured dog, unless its muzzled. and they tell owners to try to outfit an emergency muzzle for the dog, like if it gets hit by a car...

ALL dogs are capable of defending themselves, they all have teeth. Whether that defense will meet with success depends alot on the size and temperament of the dog. Dogs love us. The majority would probably not try to defend. They dont expect (unless already accustomed to it) to be hurt by people. The commentator was an idiot, considering the history of Pit's. They were BRED to not defend themselves from a human.

I agree with DO. A large mousetrap, or even a cat trap baited would suit you better than poison. I'm very leery about it.
-
I had to double stack the baby gates to keep Free confined when she was a puppy. double stacked they can t get over them
-
oh yea, that's right. I forgot about that.... thanks again. :D

my bedroom is a wreck. There is a special pillow for the dogs (when they sleep on the bed), there are special "body pillows" on the floor, with sponge like bed toppers under them (nice and cushy)and blankets on top (nice and warm), the new kitten wants one. I have to find a place to put one for her, so she stops stealing the dogs. They also think they own the couch.... Laurel is sleeping on my bed right now. I keep telling her "you're NOT sleeping up here!!!!" but she does anyhow...
-
ok I understand. Alex wasnt in pain, so having me there made it easier. But if what they're doing will cause pain, or discomfort, its better to have them under. I'm sorry, Malamum... hope everything works out....
-
thanks Malamum!! :D
-
why do they need to put her under to take x-rays? just curioous. I had ex-rays taken of Alex, and they asked me to just hold his head and comfort him.... could you not do This? or is it not allowed? x-rays dont usually hurt in any way, the dog just needs to be comforted during the test.

I plan sometime soon to start using a laptop (work and other reasons) which has a different IP then this PC. Can I log on as me? and will I lose my "paws" with a different IP? I DONT WANT TO GIVE UP MY PAWS!!! I worked hard for them!!     let me know please. no rush.... 8)

yea, I gotta go with DO....I dont mind the look of cropped ears (although I personally would never do it. I'm a softy that way, nor would I dock a tail) but on this particular dog, the ears look completely out of place. Itty bitty ears on a big, saggy head. To me, it looks like the ears are deformed.... a head that big, IMO, should have big ears to go with it. JMHO... well cropped ears on a Dobie looks good. They never make the ears smaller than the general size of the head. But this dog looks...wrong....with those ears.... just me I guess....

me too K and Rowie (good to see you again by the way) I am especially resentful, since I tried so hard to help and defend him It still hurts....
