1.       that's too funny.... but making a big fuss from the other side of the door is exactly what you want them to do. Like you said, the burglar will have second thoughts of "Is this worth it?" - and will probably decide it isnt. Now I'm talking a common burglar. If there is something in your house he REALLY wants, no dog will stop him. He'll just take the dog out. But for the average break in, yes, a noisy barking dog is good protection
2.
Where can I purchase glycerin? I'd like to try that shampoo for my dogs.
Most pharmacies carry glycerin
3. check with the police. If the dog has been reported for attacking/biting before, there will be a police record on it
4. you'd be surprised at what they'll do...they seem to know the difference between people you want in, and people you dont...of course, I hope you never have to find out. The Chief meant that most burglars (unless you are collecting picasso's, or rembrandts, or exotic jewelry) will pass by a house with a dog, rather than attempt to break in it, because thedog(s) get so noisy it may alert someone to the burglar's presence. Not worht the risk. I dont think he was intending to imply that your dog should attack anyone, just scare them off....
5. NO?? Canada sounds much more reasonable then us..
6. not with the same bitch. to keep the lines pure, and less chance of disease, there shoud be a good line of genetic diversity. I dont believe in line breeding, I will get flamed for that, but you cant beat genetics. The gene pool has to be great enough enough for diversity, to keep the line healthy. The smaller the gene pool, the more genetic problems you encounter.
7. OK I'm going to soapbox. ANY dog can be BAD, and ANY dog can be GOOD...It all depends on the owners. I have personally "broken" quite a few dogs of bad dominance behaviour, where they got above themselves and thought they were running the show....these are the types of dogs that cause problems, for groomers, vets, etc. A dog comfortable with his position in the pack, will look to his alpha for how he should behave around others. Chows, Akita's Shepherds, Rotties, Dobies, they are ALL guarding breeds. How they behave with others depends on how their owners rais, treat and TRAIN them. TRAIN is the key word here. My Freebee knows she is submissive to ME at all times. Take her to the vet, and she will get hyper and growl, if not controlled. The vet is not "part of her pack". I only have to tell her to "CHILL! NOW!" and she will. She has been told by her alpha to accept the stranger. WHETHER SHE LIKES IT OR NOT. These dogs need a strong hand, a dominant hand, to make them tow the line. Freebe is not a guarding breed, just full of herself. Guarding breeds need a STRONG alpha in their lives. And some people sinply should NOT own them. They dont have the force of will necessary to make them behave. (Laurel's a wimp! the vet loves her - )
8. I feel left out!! I dont own any "obvious" bad dogs (although most people would think twice on approaching Freebee in "one of her moods"...) I DONT get a decoder ring or secret handshake!!      8) 8)
9.
So Bully lovers, listen up. I can now join you in the ranks of a "bad dog" owner. I just need to learn the secret handshake and where to pay my membership dues and I'll need my secret decoder ring. *snicker*
show up with Rocco in the car..the "vicious doberman" in a wheelchair may make her change her tune....kill them with kindness (and obvious learning) yep....
10. a fellow "parrot head". eh?
11. andyou would be right! I was listening to "5:00 somewhere " when I posted that. thank you for the correction
12. I;m SOOOOOOO glad India is home!! A long while ago my Golden escaped, and I dreaded getting the call saying that he had been hit by a car. I searched and searched, and couldnt find him. Then, the phone rang. He was at the local animal shelters, some constructin workers had coaxed him off the road and taken him in. He was so filthy I didnt even recognize him, and he was found 6 miles from home... It's SOOOO good to know India is back with you. That's a heart stopper...  Hopefully, Buddy will turn up too...hugs and prayers to you
13. just sucks, doesnt it? when the innocent become victims, and the criminals have more rights, there is a MAJOR revamping of the justice system needing to be done. These people were BREAKING THE LAW.....serves you right for falling through the stairs... I always liked this tune: "We'll raise up our voice against evil forces, singing 'Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses..." Willie Nelson and Alan Jackson, after punishing the 'bad guys"...
14. I like the arm and hammer stuff too. There are thousands of good uses for baking soda....even pouring an old box down the drain makes the kitchen smell good. especially if you have a garbage disposal. I find dehumids work the best. Here in Chicago, summers are brutally humid. (and winters brutally dry, you cant win. I alternate between humdifiers and dehumidifiers...lol)
15. anything taken, ingested, used in excess is bad for you. That was my point. I can only drink things with aspartamine, because I am a diabetic. I will not be drinking a hundred cans of diet coke, or a gallon of sweet-n-low, every day ever. The Gulf War vets have many other issues besides aspartamine, and in my opinion, nutritionists are often quite unrealistic since they want people to eat mostly only "natural"...which is impossible for most people. I have had nutritionists for years, since myself and my son are both diabetic. They frown on canned vegetables, pre-prepared box meals, chinese food, beef, etc....I'm sorry, but I cant live on tofu.... Moderation is the key, for everything. even too much exercise is bad for you.
16. I use a swiffer wetjet and checked the chemical labels. There is amonia, which can be toxic to animals, but only in large quantities. There was a tale about Frebreeze being bad for animals too, which ended up being another urban myth. Besides, the wetjet cleaning solution dries almost immediately. And getting it ont he bottom of a food dish sitting on the floor is unlikely to cause a poisoning, unless the dog is chewing destructively on the dish. Thank you for the warning though. You never know when these things ARE true..... :)
17. we need the whole story.... If it's an assistance dog of any kind, legally they have no case. Assistance dogs are legally allowed everywhere, even restaurants. If you are an epileptic, blind, deaf, or have any medical reason to need the dog, they homeowners board cant make yu get rid of it. Contact a lawyer for more details, but this is a case you can probably win.
18. "beware of Dog" can and has gotten people sued in the past...why, I dont know. It's just ludicrous, like suing someone for falling through their stairs while ROBBING THEIR HOUSE!!!! gggrrrr..... Did that suit ever get won> I would hope not. You cant stop someone from filing a lawsuit, but I hope the judge laughed him out of the courtroom.... I have been told by the police here that the best warning sign is one like "Lab on Premises", or whatever type of dog you have....that alerts people that you have a dog, without giving a connation that the dog is mean.
19. and I will agree with that..and I will also say that the average dog owner should NOT own a wolf mix...they are NOT dogs and have to be treated differently......even in "small content"...Mine was "small content", just happened to have the teeth...and was a problem child from day one. I had to institute pack rules with him, severly inforced, to get him to behave. **I KNOW**how to do that. most people DO NOT!!@!@ THESE ARE NOT DOGS FOR EVERYONE...
20. my point exactly - "sweet-n-low" is Aspartamine...
21. another police chief (cant remember his name) here in Chicago, was giving tips in the best things you can do to protect your house when you're not there. At the end, there were two bully dogs barking up a storm behind a fence, because they were there...and he said "THIS cant be beat...dogs are noisy, most prowlers wont want to deal with them...." WOO HOO!! we've known that for a long time..... 8)
22. I watched a show, called "Miracle Dogs", about a puppy that kept escaping from its owner, who was a full time nurse, and not home alot. He kept showing up at a lady's house who worked from home, so was home all day. After being returned twice, the nurse finally brought him back and asked if she would like to keep him. The nurse wasnt home enough to care for a puppy (Lab puppy, cute as a dickens, all fluffy). She took him in. After he grew up, for some reason he started jumping on her and pawing at her left breast. When she pushed him down and ignored him, he nipped her there. For some reasonl she decided to have a mammogram done, (she was a medical transcriber for cancer patients) and yes, she had a tumor. It was SOOOO tiny they were able to remove it, with no repurcussions, and even remove the lymph nodes before they became infected. She is fine now. This dog was never "trained" to sense, although dogs can be. It gave me deep thoughts. Did the dog keep escaping to her for a reason? Was it coincidence? With all of that, I have to say this: I would like to FORCE PETA to sit down and watch this story. Dogs shouldnot be pets? Should not be kept by people? I wonder how often, undocumented, that wolves and wild dogs discovered things wrong with people in the history of the world, and there just wasnt the means to prove it? or do anything about it? THIS dog came to her...she didnt seek it out...and it saved her life.
23.
Teeth: long, curved...large in proportion to dog teeth
From you own article....that's pretty much exactly what I said. A wolf/wolf mixes teeth curve under more than a dogs...The canines on most dogs go straight down. And maybe most vets dont realize that, but mine happened to.
24. the similarities between dogs and mice and not nearly a large as the differences. Mice metabolism is faster...growth rate is faster, reproductive capability is faster....also, the tests themselves dont always lend themselves to accuracy because of the size of the testee's.... Yes. mice have gotten cancer from a lot of things that were tested on them. Because the labs want to make the results show up asap...so the poor little mouse is injested, injected, sprayed, whatever, with a huge quantity of the testing material. In my opinon this skews the data, and the test is worthless. When aspartamine was first introduced (nutra-sweet) it was tested on rats. To the equivalent of 100 cans of diet coke a day. No human being should ever drink that much of anything a day, even water. So yes, the rats got cancer. The rats died (probably from kidney failure!) and the naysayers were saying "it's bad for you..." Had they waited, and fed these rats, even a six pack a day, (rat equivalent) any kind of notable results would take forever to appear. THAT is the problem with rat testing...by trying to force the bad/good news, the tests in themselves became skewed, and worthless. I've been alive 47 years. I have been told/read/informed 6 different times that coffee is bad for you/good for you/bad for you/good for you...same with wine, and chocolate.... I have never heard of any bad affects with frontline. It is a checmical, like any flea and tick treatment, so the possibility is always there. But I dont think I would rely on rat testing to find out.
25. You can also get de-humidifiers for the room. Some are expensive, some arent...I have window air conditioners upstairs with de-hunids built in, but I have a stand alone unit as well for the basement in the summer. If you want to sleep down there, it's always cool, without air conditioners, with the de-humids going....
