1. It's very nicely done, but it doesnt look like Jetta. What kind of dog is it? It looks familiar but I just cant place it....
2.
Quote: have lots of kids
that WAS rhetorical y'know. THANKS HF, for CARING... and thats NOT rhetorical... I meant it when I said there should be more people like you in the world..that kind of caring, and commitment, would do the wold a lot of good. DONT downplay yourself, by any means...
3. HF....if I could reach through the web and both hug and kiss you I would!!! (hope your hubby doesnt mind, I'm sorta touchy feeley)   I know you want to help, but please be sure you can do this, it will be alot of work. and if you DO do it...I LOVE YOU!!! you are a saint...and should be touchy-feeley-hugged-kissed-whatever" for ALL the wonderful things you do! the world needs more people like you - have lots of kids...(just kidding)
4. awww... he's beautiful!! he has a full tail too....It looks like a commerical where they make the dogs ears stand up when he's surprised...what a cutie... :D :D
5. BSL can be insurance company driven - some insurers do not require extra insurance, some do, and also, it depends on area of the country. My insurer has no laws regarding this, because BSL has been shot down here, by the city council. In area's where the laws have adopted BSL, the insurers can then require extra insurance for those types of dogs. Remember the bottom line here - insurance companies are a BUSINESS. They are out to make money. How to combat it? Letters are good, but you have to send them to the right people. Firing off a squall to "Letters to the Editor" may get you nowhere..he could easily just ignore it. But things like "Ann Landers", "Seven On Your Side", and particular journalists themselves, can sometimes bring results. Flyers in front of Petco, taking your APBT's to meet people, interaction with the "little people" (that's us) can often turn the tables on things like BSL..Most people accept what the government does because they dont know any better, or because the media has taught them what to believe....dont think for a minute the media doesnt get hand outs from the politicians... You show them the law is wrong, gather up the numbers necessary to affect the next vote, and your chances of success improve remarkably. Especially in an election year....
6. while I agree with a lot of what Dr. Bragg has said, I also disagree with a lot of it. Genetically, he is correct. "Closing the studbook", for people or animals, is an accident waiting for a place to happen. Genetic diversity is what makes mixes somewhat stronger. People and animals. However, natural selection no longer has its place in the decision...in the wild, genetically inferior animals, and usually their offspring, would die. Therfore, no more inferior offspring. Survival of the fittest is nature's Law. A wolf with hip dysplacia would be left to die, or killed outright by the pack. This insured that only the genetically strong would survive, and mate. However, when man first started breeding dogs, it was for a specific purpose. That purpose was NOT to stand at Crufts and collect a BOB cup! Herders had stamina, strength, fur that could withstand the weather, the "Stare" that Bordie Collies are so famous for....they bred these animals to do a task....If the Tri-tone-coloring wasnt perfect, they didnt care. The dog had to work. Lab's were bred crossing Newf's with (they think) another water dog from Labrador. The purpose was to design a smaller, more compact, less furry dog who's coat could withstand the cold newfoundland water, who's neck and chest was strong enough to drag fish nets to shore, and who's coat would dry out quickly. they were ALL black... When the dog was moved to England for breeding, every once in a while a bitch would throw a yellow...so some recessive gene for yellow coloring was there. They started breeding for it. But the dogs were still working - their purpose was to retrieve waterfowl after the hunter shot them. Nowadays, very few of our working dogs "work", herding dogs dont "herd", retrievers arent out in the fields bringing back goose and duck....the majority of Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies will never run the Iditarod, or even pull a sled... yet the fanciers wanted to keep them pure. At some point, the dog show was invented, and in my opinion, that's when it all went to hell.... Breeders are now breeding for "conformation"...not for "trial"...and heres the best example I can give you. My Foxhound is "field bred", not "show bred"...The breed has been split into two different categories!!!! She could run circles around, leap over, and leave a show Foxhound in the dust.... but she's not "pretty"....Her heads not "wide enough", her tail doesnt spin out perfectly (it's kinked, from hunting), she has her dewclaws still... not conformation, no good in a show. Their original purpose is no longer being bred for. They are doing genetic plastic surgery on these dogs, to make them "show-worthy", even if they cant do what they were bred for anymore....
7. OH MY!!! sorry, couldnt resist..truth is, most places you cant buy "exotic" pets without a wild animals license...these would all fit that category. If they are found to be selling to people without the licenses, they could be in deep doo doo...so there must be a loophole. disgusting.
8. we love you Holz...and we're here for you!! Sometimes, just sometimes, friends show up in the most unusual places...
9. DONE!! damn stupid media.... Your article about people buying purebred puppies and then breeding them is totally irresponsible. The average income tax refund is $300.00...you cant GET a decent purebred dog at that price. Not without health issues, not without temperament issues, not with ISSUES!!! and then encouraging people to breed them? for a "nice little profit?" these are LIVING CREATURES!! breeding takes years of learning, health checks, generations of dogs to make sure the dog is not temperamentally unstable, and physically unhealthy...You are CONTRIBUTING to the shelters you tell these people NOT to adopt dogs from. PLEASE retract that article. The last thing we need is more back-yard breeders, putting more poor defensless and unhappy dogs in animal shelters....mine are both rescues, one from a from shelter. They are the best dogs you could have.... Katy Courtney Elgin, IL.
10. the average income tax refund (around 300.00) is not enough to buy a purebred dog of any quality....this is SOOOO BAD....
11. some dogs just DONT get along, and never will. It doesnt mean she is dog aggressive, she just doesnt like your other dogs. You have all read my posts...I thought Freebee was somewhat dog aggressive, until I took her with Laurel to visit her rescuers and the Hunt Club. She played with Foxhounds all day, not one incident...a few growls, but that's it. Yet I went through hell trying to adopt another dog, because she didnt like any of the ones I did, except Laurel...just like people, not all of them get along.
12. click on "view", then on "toolbars" then on "address bar" so that it has a checkmark in front of it. That will bring it back.
13. "Marking" like that is dominance behavior....He is telling people, basically, that he is "better" than them. He is more dominant. You need some demotion done here... Dogs mark to leave their scent, for other dogs to smell...he is leaving his scent on humans, which is saying "I am KING dog here..." You should probably see a behaviorist, in this case, but I'll give you some basic pointers. DO NOT let him eat before you...even if that means you sit and eat crackers in front of him. DO NOT let him enter doorways before you. Make him sit, you go through first, he follows on your command. DO NOT let him sleep on beds, couches, furniture, until he has accepted you as ALPHA... When you take him out, give him a "pee" command...say it before he goes (just watch, you'll know when he's about to go..) and then reward him. This tells him that peeing is under YOUR control. He cant mark until you say its ok. If he pees out of sync, he gets no reward. Once demoted, he wont pee on people anymore.... peeing for dogs is not just relieving themselves, it's marking. Territority, people, situations. Your pup is too full of himself..Demote him. :D
14. well, I posted this before I read all the replies    and I apologize Noah for calling you "she"... I do agree that the womans actions, as I stated, probably caused her own problem....but still, I would keep your dog under tabs until you can ascertain how it will react in other situations like this. We cant control other stupid peoples actions, and the worst thing you can do in this situation is panic, which she did. If she hadnt they probably all would have gotten all their "sniffs" in and been fine...but you're always gonna run into that, no matter where ya go. So keep your dog on a lead, and prove to everyone around you that your dog is a good, other dog trustworthy dog, (mine ISNT, and I KNOW it) and I believe it will eventually work itself out. :D
15. If it was an off-leash dog park (not disclosed) then the dog being off a leash is not illegal. I am more concerned with the puppies lady panicing, and almost strangling the poor puppy in the process. Most dogs will react to someone screaming, and holding a dog off ground on a leash like that, differently than if the lady just calmy picked the puppy up and said "go away please..." sometimes people can cause their own problems by reacting the wrong way. This doesnt sound so much like a attack, as an accidental bite while her dog was trying to make sense of the noise and the panicing woman. Still, although I dont think muzzling is the answer, since it doesnt appear to have been a deliberate attack, the poster should consider keeping her dog on a leash until her dogs reactions to other situations can be established. It could very well have been an accident, in the "heat of the moment"...but still, responsibly, I would not let this dog loose until I knew for sure it was safe around others dogs, and panicing owners. My Lab mix is NOT safe around other dogs...8 out of ten she will get along fine with, the 9th and 10th, I wouldnt promise anything....That's why she is never offleash, and not taken to dog parks. It annoys me that I can never tell how she will react in any given situation, as I would love to let her run with other dogs, but better safe than sorry.
16. I am SOOOO sorry Holz...and Holly, RIP...run at the bridge. Holz will come there eventually, and Boomer, too...
17. The hardest part about learning a language is learning to "think" in that language...instead of trying to translate every sentence. Since dogs dont think in any language, teaching him dual commands in two different languages wont confuse him. He is only responding to the words you say, not the meaning behind them. Babies can pick up two languages easily, and be fluent in both. So can a dog. If you have taught hand commands as well, that will make it easier. Use the german word, and the hand command...he'll pick it up in no time. I have a friend who's dog responds to both English and Spanish. She spoke both languages when her children were babies, so they would learn both, and the dog kinda learned along with them.
18. well, there's always extra work...although this dog is so tiny probably not alot...but still, if it's a terrier it will need exercise, and mental stimulation. They can be feisty...and the shots are expensive as well....as far as your parents, only you can judge that...with your going away to school, and having a dog that needs exercise, is it really a good idea? Why not wait until your classes are done, and you can spend that time with the dogs?
19. I just want a more dignified name than "Labradoodle...." or Goldiedoodle....Retrieverpoo is definitely OUT..... :o
20. there's no such thing as overprotective, with an athletic dog in a strange yard and a strange neighborhood....you did the right thing Science. I have to remind my kid and his friends to lock the front storm door, because both of mine have learned how to jump up and open it. So you just gotta now your dogs.... :D
21.
The disease you speak of, courtnek, was common amongst the European aristocracy--and yes, it is a result of inbreeding.
thank you Mei Mei...I also believe, that with dogs, "you cannot breed too close home..." sometimes, its in the breeders best interest's TO NOT BREED~~~!!!!!!
22. I am making beef stew for dinner...it takes 2 hours...in the meantime, I have been treat training the dogs..Come. sit. stay. lay down.. Laurel needs some more obedience training.... BOTH of them respond to the treats, THEN LOOK AT THE STOVE..... GOOD STUFF THERE...WE WANT *THAT***
23. Rott, I apologize for the extra "T"....sticky keyboard...
24.
THEY ARE NOT ROTTIES THEY ARE ROTWEILERS!
Why is this an issue? I have a Labrador Retriever/German Shorthair Pointer mix, and an American Foxhound...I call them "the Lab and the Hound..." and as already posted, Rottweiler has two "T's".... I dont even call her a Lab/GSP anymore...it takes too long.... I admit the one T may have been a typo, but why get so upset over it? Rott 'N' Pitt's name is too long...we all call him Rott....or RNP...he doesnt mind.... people have shortened my online name to "Court"...I dont care....my name is actually Katy....we arent professional typists, most us of.....
25. There are a number of Pit Bulls, in shelters, in the bronx and across the country...usually on death row..... your plea for a "free Pit Bull" makes me somewhat suspicious, since the shelters will want your name, and info on you, and how you plan to home it...perhaps you had best explain yourself..... :o
