My house is very small...they can see me from any room except the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. so that's when they follow.

Oh HOW cool!!! Freebee is very pretty (well, I think so  ) but alas, has no real talent that would show up well on TV...unless they'll let her catc her favorite ball, lay by Kyle while he's sick and refuse to move...or manipulate Laurel into getting things for her....

crating helps train them, they usually dont soil their own dens. Right now, he considers your whole house his "den"....If crating is not possible, then put him in a smaller room with a tiled floor, and his papers, and then take the papers outside on every trip outdoors. Put the papers in the same place, the place you want him to go, and then praise him greatly when he goes there. If you crate, the crate should only be big enough for him to stand up, turn around and lay down comfortably. Any bigger, and he will go in it. Put his bed in there, but not his food or water. Make sure you uncrate him at least every three hours, depending on his age, and take him outside immediately. It's generally one hour for evey month the dog is old, so at 8 monts, he should be able to hold it for 8 hours (in case he's a rescue). Some people think this is cruel, but there is instinctive logic behind it. When wolves are puppies, they are denned. Mom cleans the den until they are old enough to leave it, but the dogs never soil in their own beds, only on the other side of the den. That's why the crate needs to be small. They start leaving the den at 3 months, and they dont soil in it any time after that. This is where crating helps. They feel secure in a den. If he has an accident, dont yell at him. Clean it up and take it oustside, to show him where he should go. then praise him when he does.

well, that does explain alot. My Lab and Foxhound both have "long noses"...not as long as an afghan, but still long. Both of them appear to hae peripheal vision...I have seen both swing their heads to the side when a squirrel runs by...The hound is a scent hound, but both of them will mark on something running through a closed window, which they cant smell nearly as well through. The hound doesnt chase, the Lab does, but the Hound was trained to hunt the scent of fox...the Lab was never trained to hunt anything, but can run down a squirrel in seconds flat...and she's part pointer, and points too! never been trained....so maybe their peripheral vision has something to do with their instinctive genes, too...
I don't wanna call no one for animal cruelty, because they really love the dog
No, they dont.....YOU love the dog...it doesnt appear they could care less. Dont be fooled by what people say...remember all prisoners are innocent, too... I would ask Animal Control what they think, without disclosing the neighbors yet. If they believe they can take the dog (which they dont usually do until more than one complaint has been filed) then I would ask them to keep your name confidential. If they decide they will take the dog, tell them you will adopt it.

Oh if she was boarded, she may have picked up a form of stomach flu from some other dog. Just keep an eye on her and see how it goes.... good luck! poor pupster...I hate when they're sick like that. They dont understand... :(

right now, two dogs, a cat and a male teenager....he's kinda like an animal.....     I did have two cockatiles, two pond turtles, a pet mouse (belonging to one of my kids friends...his mom WOULD NOT have it in the house... chameleons, bunnies....fish.... 8)

she may have gotten into something you're not aware of....puppies do that all the time. Does she seem really listless? or walking funny? I worry about dogs eating and drinking things they shouldnt, like antifreeze.... It could also be an intestinal parasite...like worms...did you give them a fecal sample by chance? If she keeps doing it even with the special food, take in a fecal sample to the vet.

So Laurel is making me crazy today. She keeps jumping up on the chair, licking my face, and when I get up she goes straight to the kitchen and stares at the counter. There is a bunch of stuff on the counter, and she's been fed already, so I keep telling her to lay down, and she keeps going back into the kitchen, with Freebee in tow.....Both of them stare at the counter...Laurel whines.... I let them out. No good. I give them each a biscuit, no good. Still staring at the counter. Finally, Laurel jumps up and puts her paws on the counter and whines. She's not allowed to countersurf, and I almost yelled at her, till she started scrabbling for something.... I look where she is scrabbling, and there, behind the toaster, are two new unchewed rawhide bones....I put the rawhide up when I;m not here, for safety reasons, and these two somehow fell behind the toaster. They are all out otherwise, and I was going to get some more today. Now for the funny part....I pull both out, and hand one to Laurel (since she's making the stink over them) and she proceeds to drop it at FREEBEE's feet, and then comes back for the other. Freebee picks it up, goes to the living room and lays down to chew. Laurel takes hers under the desk, lays down but doesnt chew it.... They CRACK ME UP....Freebee tells me when Laurel needs to go out, Laurel tells me when Freebee wants to chew....HOW DO THEY KNOW THESE THINGS????

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!! Not only should they be SUED for their disgusting practices, they should be SHUT DOWN...PERMANENTLY. Perhaps if this suit is won, and I pray it is, the Animal Control people and the ASPCA can try to shut them down legally. I would ask the lawyer to include, in the complaint, that the facilities be inspected, by the ASPCA and a third party Vet, not affiliated with either organization. This way neither side can complain there's a bias on the vet's observations....      damn I wish I was in Florida!!! you better believe I'd be at that rally, and loud as hell about it to boot...it might be worth getting arrested for disturbing the peace... :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat:

Does Kira like to swim? My Malamute mix didnt....poor thing. Hope she wasnt too scared....

Frontline and Advantix are the best thing for ticks. Those of you who live in deer-tick areas, be careful. Deer ticks carry Lyme disease. Which is a very insidious illnes if you get it....I hate the nasty things....

probably not DL, but since you asked... :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: My first apartment seemed really really nice..I had an eat in kitchen, small, but still nice.Back door that went to a field outside, where the dog could run, and a washer and dryer. It was a three floor apt, and there was a washer/dryer in the back area on every floor. Mine was the only floor with a back outside entrance, so with the dog, that was cool! I lived there three months, with no issues. Then some people moved into the third floor apt, and shortly after, I started seeing roaches. LOTS of roaches....ten "roach motel's" worth of roaches, in three days. I called the landlord...he called pest control. In the meantime, they were everywhere...I really didnt have an issue (or a fear) until the morning I made a pot of coffee, and opened the cabinet for a cup...two roaches fell off of the cabinet, into my coffee pot...I went screaming into the night... I moved out three days later. The people upstairs had 14 people living in a two bedroom apt..and had brought the roaches with them. The pest control people said it was hopeless...the only way to really get rid of them would have been to burn the building to the ground... To this day, if I see a roach, I panic and go into complete ballistic mode... I have broken things trying to get them and kill them.. :o :o :o

YOU BELONG TO US!!! MUHAHAHAHAHA... and someday, I'll tell you my roach story.... :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat:

I would definitely have the vet check him. It could be ACL, but it could also just be a bad sprain. Even a twist. If a twist or a sprain, it will come around quickly and he'll start to use it again, altho tentatively...
-
yes, check for pad cuts, bur's broken nails, etc. If he'll let you (and you might want to muzzle him first) press lightly on the area on and around the paw and see if he shies away...check where the paw and leg meet, in the back. that''s a common place for injuries. Otherwise, if you find nothing stuck in the pads, or no cuts, just keep him quiet till you can get to the vet. It might just be a strain or sprain, or a pulled muscle. Dogs always lick where it hurts, even if it doesnt help any.

any dog can be trained to respond to a new name.....but it makes training harder. It helps if the new name you choose sounds similar the given name. Frankie and Montie are close enough to retrain the dog to his new name... it is also well known that a name that ends in the "ee" sound is more easily trained to a new name. they respond to tone...if the tone is the same, they can get it.

HF, Sweetie, GET A NEW !@#$%^&* VET!! WHAT DAMNABLE NERVE!! you are providing a service, a home, a decent and loving place to stay, with good health care, good training, good socialization. You provide these abandoned, unloved and abused animals with the type of life they deserve. That's what rescue is all about... Tell him the people I adopted my Foxhound from had ***35** hounds... are they hoarders? or are they people doing what needs to be done for the welfare of these animals? for their health, benefit and future adoptability? I am PISSED!!! Give me his number, I'll give him a BIG piece of MY mind, and he wont forget it....not in THIS lifetime.... :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat:

I agree with you Malamum, and I am glad to see that at least some people are trying to keep the breed going for it's original intention. I know most snow dogs will never compete in the Iditarod...I was just making a point.... :D And I wasnt talking about crossbreeding, per se, but rather trying to get away from line breeding, by introducing dogs outside the genetic circle for mating. Put some "fresh blood" into the mix, as it were. Line breeding tends to guarante the look of the dog, but not always the health. Unfortunately, when yo bring in fresh blood there are no guarantees. And I stand by my post that you cant play with genetics....the smaller the pool gets, the more problems you will have. That's why there are laws in most places preventing people from marrying their sisters, and first cousins and such. Because the genetics get ugly... I dont know that I either agree, or disagree, with hybrid vigor. But I do know for a fact that you can only rein in the gene pool so far before you end up with nasty genetic problems...

thank you!! that's what I was trying to think of, but work left me in a mental meltdown today... it does look like an Afghan.....

just fyi..here at least, ticks are not coastal. They survive quite nicely in forested and shaded areas...and they can spread lyme disease...
