1. thanks TDG....I was tired. I apologize if I seemed cranky. :D now that I think of it though, I dont remember anything about "sedation" with Freebee. There was the general anesthesia, the surgery, the stitches needing to be removed....and the overnight stay. I dont see sedation on the bill anywhere....no pain killers either, afterwards. She didnt need them, but I remember them saying I could ask for some later if necessary. So maybe it just depends on the how the dog behaves.... this was my first female. all of my males were "snip and go"...they didnt even have to stay over...
2.
I have worked and completed behavioural studies on wolf like breeds,. Indeed its a shame in my opinion why people are not content with the breeds that we have, and that yet again history is being repeated... only this time it is not accidental hybridisation when wild wolves are purposefully being bred when in many areas of the world they are threatened. The wolf "breeds" are beautiful and having a very special affinity to these animals I love their beauty and behaviour, but I would much rather be seeing wolves in the wild being left alone to support the ecosytems, and to avoid the endangerment and collapse of other animals through human ignorance, who don't understand the long-term effects of removing not only the wolf, but the other creatures that depend on the wolf in the complicated eco-web of life.
I agree with this entirely. There are places here in the states where the wolf is being "brought back"....(not without a lot of controversy, of course) not as a "pet" or as a domestic animal, but as a truly wild wolf. Left to it's own rules and defenses. Here in Illinois, a little bit of irony is happening. I live in an area of the state called "The Fox Valley", a series of towns and cities along the Fox River. It was named that over a hundred years ago, because this area was teaming with foxes. That was one of the big reasons it landed on the map, fox was hunted and sold widely here. Even Lewis and Clark hunted fox here. Since the growth of the area, the foxes disappeared. They have not been seen here in almost a hundred years. Until 5 years ago. They have been sited again, along the Fox River and in the woodlands around it, and the population is growing. This state spends a lot of money on preserving forest and woodlands, and waterlands. With that, the coyotes came back as well. There is a general deer overpopulation here, since hunting is not allowed, and there is so much forest and grassland preserved. The deer brought the coyotes back, the foxes followed (foxes are great scavengers). All the other critters, the raccoons and skunks and possums and so on, never left. Now the problem with them is starting to dwindle as well, since there is a better balance of predator and prey again. Of course, it frightens some people (it IS odd to see a Coyote run across the 4 lane hiway in town) but I for one like it.
3. It is entirely possible, espeically if the dane was the mother. It would probably be close to impossible for the chihauhau to deliver those puppies if she was female, at least not without medical help...but domesticated dogs are all the same species, although different "breeds", they can all inter-mate.
4.
wow thats impressive! :o How did you teach that? Didn't she steal other things out of the refrigerator?
that's the exact reason I never taught that rick to my dogs....once they knew how to open the fridge, it would be all over....
5. Kendalyn, in theory that is absolutely correct. However, in real life, it just doesnt work. Trolls and bashers work on everyone;s emotional levels, not their rational ones. As a general rule, for instance, I am very laid back and easy to get along with. There are some buttons, however, that when pushed, I will go over the edge. One of my big ones got pushed in Rott's threads. I will NOT ever assume someone is guilty, just because other people I dont know have ganged up on him to try to push his guilt down my throat. I dont really "know" Rott either, but I still know him better than a bunch of strangers that decided to show up out of the blue and trash him. yes, they are entitled to post their opinions, however, no one else is required to have to accept them. and when people pushed back, and defended Rott, they decided to get personal. That's when I asked for the thread to be locked. It was no longer a discussion, it had become of battle of wills. My own included. Does that explain it? :)
6. and Hi Roo! thanks to you, and K, for backing me up, and welcome back! :D
7. I am not a moderator Anne. But all the moderators here have shown remarkable good sense when asked to lock a thread, by anyone, not just me, and I appreciate their doing this for us. That's what I meant when I said I would ask to have this thread locked if it got out of control again.
8. have friends come see YOU!! it will socialize them to people fromt he get-go. as far as other animals, you have to wait for the jabs...but at 4 months, they are still easily socailized wth other dogs..
9. that took me to tears...like I said, YOU were MEANT to have this dog!! good boy Rocco!!! and HF, you have all the respect I can give you!! most people wouldnt want this dog. I can guarantee, (since most people didnt want Laurel either, for less reasons than not wanting Rocco) that he will love you unconditionally FOREVER... Crap, people didnt want Laurel because she isnt "pretty".... she looks old..considering her hunting life, thats not surprising. She loves me unconditionally, and aside from her fear, there is nothing wrong with her. HF, I comend you from the bottom of my heart....
10. TDG, I understand the differences betwen sedation and anesthesia. When I read it, for some reason I was thinking she meant anesthesia when she said sedation. Its been a long and hard week. So forgive me if I didnt catch myself in time, before I filed the post.
11. speak isnt too difficult. Just find something he'll bark at (other than the mailman) and when yu see him tense up to start barking, or after he's started, say "speak" and give him a treat. With mine, I barked at them. Woof! woof! woof! then speak! then woof! etc. you get the drift. When they do speak, I give them a treat. I found the low-in-the-throat bark (deeper voiced) got them to bark back quicker. Even howling works. Also, a recording of other dogs ( I used a bay sound that I got online) will get them going. Even Freebee barks at the bay. Look at them and say SPEAK then play the recording. They will bark instinctively. then reward them. After a while, they will tie the command to the action.
12. true. I hadnt thought of that. thanks. However, if anesthetized, what would you need sedation for then? ot is this for sedatin afterwards?
13. WHAT????? did you say WITHOUT sedation? They CANNOT spay a female without sedation!!! they normally put them OUT completely!! If they're doing this spay right, it's a complete hysterectomy!!! cannot be done without drugs!!! I would check with other vetsw...your's is taking you for a joyride... spay a dog without sedation. if he/she is REALLY doing that, I would call for getting their license revoked!!!
14. Freebee was 230.00. but that included anesthesia and an overnight stay. check with the humane society, and the ASPCA - they often offer programs to spay/neuter at reduced cost.
15.
Czeck wolfdogs and the Saarloos can't be registered because they came from wolf crossbreedings?? What morons, the German Shepherd came from wolf crossbreedings. ALL dogs came from wolves anyway. Besides, the Czech and Saarloos are so far removed that they are basically just dogs now. Any "wolf blood" should be long gone at this point. "Wolves and dogs may be the same genus, but are still very much two different species, and should not be mixed. It's a genetic crapshoot at best, and having had worked with several of them over the years, hybrids can be unruly and untrainable at best, dangerous to the family that owns it at worst." Actually, the dog IS a subspecies of wolf. The only thing that is REALLY different about the two is the intensity of their behavior. Wolves' behavior is much more intense than that of the average dog. As for them being unruly, it is only because of their tendency to be very independant animals. Their sometimes high energy and short attention span also makes them hard to train, but they are far from being untrainable. Also, ANY dog can be dangerous to its family, not just wolfdogs, ESPECIALLY when the owners cannot properly 'read' their canine. There is no evidence ,however, to prove that wolfdogs are more dangerous to their family than 'normal' dogs. I will say though, that many wolfdogs do inherit the intense wolf behavior of pack structure. Without knowing how to handle a wolfdog with such behaviors, an owner could very well end up with a wolfdog who has much more of a potential to be dangerous. Just to remind you, wolfdogs are mutts. They are mixbreeds. It is virtually impossible to describe them as being one way or another and having that description fit all wolfdogs. Ones with more wolf might act ore like a wolf, ones with more husky might act more like a husky, ones with more german shepherd might act more like a germen shepherd... Then again, it is possible to have one with more wolf but acts more like a dog, or one that has more german shepherd, but has inherited more of the intense wolf behavior. ~Seij
I agree to a point. Yes, our dogs all originated from the wolf. But there are THOUSANDS of years of domestication in today's dog. It is not, IMO, a good idea for anyone who is not familiar with the wolf, his behavior and "quirks", to own one. This is not the dog for everyone. Some of the pups, as mentioned, will come out behaving like dogs. Some will not. It really is a crapshoot. And wolves need more space, more training (serious obedience traiing, and a STRONG alpha hand to control them), this is an animal where, if they take the wolf characteristics, you can NEVER slide on the Alpha role. The average dog owner doesnt understand the Alpha role, much less is able to put it into practice.....
16. they're unfmailair with their new house/yard. might want to go back to basic puppy training again for a while, til they settle in. and definitely get some stuff to take the smell out of the rugs....
17. they can. sometimes they just "think" they're pregnant, even if they cant be. The vet may know a way to get her to stop nesting...
18. fly paper. Cheap, non chemical. it smells sweet, attracts the flies and they get stuck to it. kinda like an airborn roach motel. You hang it from the ceiling, they are attracted to it and land on it. Then they cant leave.
19. welcome back Rott! 8) and if any of the guests show up to do more "Rott-bashing", I'll have THIS thread locked as well. Go troll somewhere else, I'm sure you can find a nice bridge to lie in wait under.... :evilbat:
20. Ok I'm putting a stop to this before it gets out of hand AGAIN!!! Mods, please lock thos post when I'm done. I have been in contact with Rott. I know why he has not come here to answer for himself, and what is going on. I am not at liberty to discuss that with any of you, other than to say that he DID not try to sell Drey at auction, and the Hoobly auctin was put up in February, before any security measures were in place. The person who put it there has not been to visit it in over a month. 'nuff said. Dont ask, I cant tell you. Mods, again, please lock this thread before it gets out of control again.
21. ok funny story... my old dog (Jarvis, malamute mix) and cat (Isis, black shorthair/amber eyes) were friends and enemies at the same time. Isis liked Jarvis, but had the whole kitty "dont bother me attitude". well, Jarvis liked to chase him. And one day, he ticked Isis off, by chasing him around the house. He eventually went and laid under the coffee table, when Isis got on the upper back of the couch, and Jarvis fell asleep. I saw this with my own eyes. On the coffee table was a heavy lead crystal ashtray. empty, fortunately. Isis slipped off the back of the couch, got on the coffee table and with his front paw PUSHED the ashtray off the table onto Jarvis' head. Jarvis (probably in pain) jumped up and knocked the whole coffee table over onto himself...Isis had escaped, and was back on the back of the couch, looking innocent as possible... yea, they bait each other. even from different species...
22. Aurora, hon, think of it this way. If she was in pain, dying, would you have let her go then? willingly? in this situation, unfortunately, she may have hurt someone. badly. And she would have been put down, but not with you by her side at the last minutes. As hard as it was, you made the responsible choice, which we HAVE to do always. It wasnt her fault she was this way. But she was, and it could not be corrected. The guilt would have been worse had she mauled or killed a child. There is a reason for things like this happening, I honestly believe that. You just dont know what that reason is yet. In time, it will make itself known to you. You may not understand the "why's" of any of this, until then. But know it will come. And know that she will always be there, in your heart and soul, forever. She's not gone, just in a different place now. A better place, where there is no fear, no anger, no pain. She is in your soul, and at peace. Your candles burned all day. Neither of them went out until I blew them out.
23. I;m SOO sorry...I wasnt trying to hurt you.... the picture ont he shelter sight I got Laurel from is NOT Laurel, I am sure of it. or it is Laurel at a MUCH younger age. I dont care, I still love her, but your post made me think.....her pictures up close are NOT appealing, because of how old her grey makes her look, and how sad her eyes are... I apologize.
24. I SAY AGAIN YOU ARE AN ANGEL!!!   You WERE destined to have, and heal, Rocco. If it can be done now, it could have been done then as well. They may have loved him, but they couldnt attend to his needs. He is PROTECTING you HF!! He has already changed allegiances. And the fact that he is PO'd about the leg work only means that he can FEEL things there. WOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!! He may never be perfect, but i can practically guarantee YOU and hubby will always be the #1 people on his list!!!
25.
I vote we strip them naked and light up parts of their body... just so they know what it feels like and so they can't breed.
count me in.... :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat:
