Can you give a dog Pepto Bismol for an upset stomach or diarhea ?? If so, how much for a 100 lb dog?
-
Oops, my mistake, i thought we were supposed to post funny things ( as in pictures ) to make us laugh... sorry :-? Jada has to be the most embaressing dog to walk. She will poop anywhere. We live in a new subdivision, and there are still several houses that are under construction. There is always a min. of 50 different construction workers at a given time in the subdivision. Well most dogs like pooing into a bush or shrub, or at least on grass, not my dog! She will poop anywhere. Where she ussually likes pooping is in the middle of the street in front of a house under construction while its lunch time so all the construction workers are sitting out front having lunch. Im sure its very appitizing for them to watch me pick up her poop right in front of them... he he Taurus isn't too embaressing, but before we had him neutered he used to hump peoples legs quite a bit, so that was always embaressing...

Ok, well I've posted these pics recently here, but Ill post them again, for those of you who haven't seen them. They always make me laugh.. Well it's official. We paid for the classes today, YEAH!!! We will be starting July 22nd, at 6:15 pm. The neat thing is that I talked my mom into bringing her dog too, so we can do it together. I am really excited now... :D
-

Breeds I would like to own before I die: ( in no particular order) Presa Canario APBT Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rodesian Ridgeback Wimeraneur ( lol I have no idea how to spell that) American Bulldog Ca de Bou Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog Alano Espanol ok... 2 down 7 to go....

How old is the pup again? Sorry I can';t remember... If he has all his shots then I say daycare would probably be alot of fun for him. (and would make you feel better that hes not sitting in a crate for so long. As far as the rough housing, that ones tough to judge unless you're right there. Just watch them carefully, and never leave them unsupervised. (which im sure you know ..) My two play VERY rough, but its just playing. It took me a while to figure out what was play and what wasn't. I haven't had any problems thus far (*knocks on wood*) but I am always there supervising their playtime together. Most of the time rough play is fine, and if one of the dogs gets too rough for the other, trust me, they'll let them know. Then the one that was too rough will just tone it down a bit... Heres a picture of my two playing rough... From The American Bulldog Resources page: Prong Collars A Study on Prong Collars was done in Germany: a.. 100 dogs were in the study. 50 used choke and 50 used prong collars. b.. The dogs were studied for their entire lives. As dogs died, autopsies were performed. c.. Of the 50 which had chokes, 48 had injuries to the neck, trachea, or back. 2 of those were determined to be genetic. The other 46 were caused by trauma. d.. Of the 50 which had prong collars, 2 had injuries in the neck area, 1 was determined to be genetic. 1 was caused by trauma. The numbers seem to speak for themselves. (Information about this study taken from an Anne Marie Silverton Seminar)
I would LOVE if I could use a pring, but I can't. I'm living with my mom and she thinks they are cruel. She told me as long as I'm in her house, Casey is not going to wear "something that will hurt him" I haven't tried distracting him, but I will take a pocketful of treats tonight on our walk and see if it works.
perhaps you could enlighten her that they are not "evil" and are actually much better for a dog then a choke collar. There have been studies which have shown this to be true..

As far as the neutering, your vet should go over that with you. With mine I had no problems, but they are big dogs with high pain tolerences... I swear Taurus does not feel pain! They were doppy that night, and then the next day they were fine. My vet uses the stitches that dissolve, so I didn't have to take them back to be removed. My biggest problem was trying to keep them from being too active. Its hard to keep a 7 month old puppy from wanting to play with her older brother....lol Now for the bells, this is how we taught it. It might be a round about way, but she allready knew one of the commands ( touch) so we just expanded on that. To teach touch: Take a treat that smells really good and rub it on the palm of your hand. Hold the palm of your hand up and say "touch" the pup will automatically want to smell your palm because you just rubbed a good smelling treat on it, so as soon as her nose touches the palm of your hand say "good" or "yes" whatever your praise word is, and give her a treat. Repeat this until they get a little better handg of it, and eventually stop rubbing the treat on your hand, and just say "touch". (**note: this also works as a great backup recall exercise because it is fun for the dog. If you say touch in a light hearted voice each time, the dog begins to really like this game. I can say touch and Jada will run from the other side of the yard to touch the palm of my hand.) Okay, so now your dog knows touch, you can transfer this to the bells. Say touch and put your hand near the bells. When she/ he goes to touch your hand, she/ he will touch the bells. Say "good" and open the door. After a few times they will understand that ringing the bells means they can go outside. just a word of caution though: Jada started ringing the bells everytime she wanted to go out and play, so the dam things were being hit every 20 mins. I think this is where Sasha idea of using two different doors would come in especially handy. That way you only have them on the "potty door". I hope that wasn't too confusing. Sometimes its easier to just do something, then to explain it.. :) -
Always take them out the SAME door for pottying, and try using a different door if it's playtime.
thats a really great tip!! I'll have to remember that the next time I have to train a puppy... ( which won't be for many, many years... lol) I forgot to mention too, we taught Jada to ring a bell when she needed outside. That way, if you don't see them go to the door right away you can hear them! -

Well in regards to the house training, I would say just try to be more pro-active . If you know he is going to pee after he comes back inside and drinks water, then make sure you take him out again before he has the chance to pee. Its alot easier to train them by reading their patterns ( ie: he/she always pees after taking a drink ) and acting on them before they do. We had some problesm training Jada only because she peed so often, I had never heard of a puppy peeing so much. I just learned that until she was about 6 months old, she HAD to go out every 45 mins, or there would be a mess on the floor. Once I figured this out, training became much easier because I could react to the situation faster. As far as the nipping, when she bites at you just say a firm NO. And then ignore him. He will soon realize that he only gets love when he doesn't use his mouth as a play object. Also , If you have a chew toy available, if he bites you, say NO then immediatly give him a chew toy. When he chews on that instead of you, praise him. As far as the not begging while your eating, I don't have alot of good advice for a puppy there. This drove us nuts with our two dogs., so we just taught them a good down-stay, and make them stay while we're eating. Then if they are good and stay where they're supposed to, they will get a treat from our dinner .... but only in their dog bowls. Never from the table. Good luck, hope I've helped a bit. Im sure someone more experienced can elaborate on what I've said, these are just teh things we've found worked for us. Kara -
LOL... No, not a pit. Do you know what a Presa is? Hey, I haven't heard from you in so long, either because you haven't been around, or the fact that I'm not here nearly as often as I used to be and only check 2 of the forums. Either way, I want to see how big Jada is getting! Probably overshadows Taurus by now, huh?
Yes, Jada certainly has gotten much bigger then Taurus. Its funny because I used to think Taurus was a fair sized dog, but now next to her he seems to small. He can completly walk underneath her stomach... which is quite cute because when we first brought her home, she always walked under his !!! lol She is 11 months old now. She weighs between 95-100 lbs, and is 26-27" tall. ( my dad calls her our little horsey...he he he) . She is still in her lanky teenager stage... her body just can't catch up to her legs. She has really started to develop more muscles even in the past month, so she doesn't look quite so skinny... she eats like a pig though   well here are some somewhat recent pictures of her. They were taken about 5 weeks ago in our back yard... as I said shes allready starting to fill out a bit, so she looks a bit bulkier now. I will try and take some more recent pictures tonight for ya! ( any chance to show my sweety off :P ) Jada then... well I am not familiar with the collar you spoke of, I can say that I wouldn't be able to function if I wasn't introduced to a prong collar. I too have a male APBT, he is 4 1/2 years old, and 70 lbs. Although 70 lbs is not a huge dog, he sure can pull me around. When he sees something he wants ( such as a squirrel, cat, etc...) he GOES for it.... It was very hard for me to walk him with a normal flat collar, and I refused to use a gentle leader for the same reason you stated; people think its a muzzle. http://www.leerburg.com/fit-prong.htm here is a great link which shows you how to properly fit the collar on your dog. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT... Good luck, I hope this has helped.. Kara

oh yes, I talked with the trainer about that. I wasn't sure exactly when they started jumps and things, and she said because she was so large that she wouldn't have her jump for at least 6 more months.... But that we could start learning everything else.... Im just not sure what everything else is yet... he he he Im sure Ill find out though... Thanks for the concern though, I appreciate it! Kara

Jada is a small horse means that she is 11 months old and around 26"-27 " tall allready. She is a big girl, and she reminds me of a small pony sometimes... lol thats all I meant... I wasn't sure if she could compete in competitions because she was so big... I didn't know if she could even fit through the tunnels??? I am just looking to do something fun with my dog.... :D
-
Jada just finished her Grade 3 at the obediance school we go to.... it is alot of fun, and she ( as well as I ) enjoy going. Our instructer is starting another agility class in July, and I was considering going to it with her... ( I realize it will just be for fun as Jada is a small-horse...lol ). Could anyone who has done the agility thing share any pros/ cons of it with me? I am just looking for something fun to do with my dog that will get her out , and socialized, and create an even stronger bond between us. Thanks, Kara

:D nope, no fighting... just talking amongst rational adults.... ( I don't want to start a war with anyone here and start a 49 page match.. lol) *wink* if you know what I mean..... I like it here, I actually forgot about this board for a while, but now Im back, and i like hearing all the advice/ comments from owners of multiple breeds, not just the ones I own ( which is all I get on alot of the other boards I go to...) -
My biggest pet peeve in the entire world is when Im walking Taurus and Jada, and someones dog runs out of their house/ yard straight at us. Once the people see who they're running towards, they ussually scream " Oh no, don't go near those dogs, they'll eat you for breakfast..." and this is ussually followed by an auckward (sp??) laugh, and a hesitation to see if my dogs actually will "eat them for breakfast..." This pi**es me off beyond belief. No my dogs will not eat your dogs for breakfast.... how dare you schout that out for everyone to hear. Also, I love when people ask me if Jada is a pitbull ( I got that alot when she was a puppy ). When I would say no, they'd say ' Oh good, I wanted to make sure she wasn't going to bite me..." Duh... you think that a dog will not bite you so long as its not a pitbull??? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Oh no, Cheeky, I wasn't refering to you. I just get that overall feeling about the whole debate, on any board... not just this one. I was not, or did not imply that you had said that..... Its not just this board that this debate is happening, as Im sure you know. The fanciers of this "dog" will argue till there blue in the face, as will the people who are against them. I honestly do not think many opinions are changed on an internet forum .... JMO. Maybe they are, but I doubt it. People feel strongly about somethings, and no matter what I write, you write, or someone else writes, will change them. Perhaps it makes people think about things twice, but I doubt if someone feels so strongly towards one thing, that anything someone types to them will change that feeling. I honestly would never own a "doodle" however, I was just trying to perhaps tell both sides of the story.... as only people who were against these types of dogs had posted..... -
Basically because buying one of these dogs is supporting BYBing. None of them ( that I have seen) are health tested, none of them have any titles ( since there is no reputable registry that will acknowledge them)
that is not true, because my parents have a golden doodle, and the breeder has all her dogs health tested, and guarentees all of her puppies. My parents got a goldendoodle, because my mother fell in love with one, and she had her heart set on getting one. They also have a husky. Does that mean she is a bad person because she wanted something that wasn't available in a shelter? I do not think so.... -

Ok, I'll admit, I didn't have time to read everyones post, so i appologize if I am repeating anything else someone has said. Someone metioned giving the government control, and making them assess possible dog owners, and send them to classes and license them. I too agree that this would be a recipe for disaster. Just another way for them to make money... I can see it now. You have to pay an outrageous amount of money just to submit an application to own a pitbull, and 90% off the people who apply would not be allowed to own one, and would have to re-apply for another breed of dog. Why not leave this process up to someone who really cares about the dogs. Why not have the AKC, UKC, CKC, or which ever breed registry is in your country handle this. 1) I think breeders should need a license to breed dogs. Just as you need a license to drive, they should have to take classes and pass tests, and adhere to strict rules placed on them by their governing body. They would be fined if they did not adhere to these rules, as would anyone else who bred dogs with out a lisence. 2) People who want to own a dog must take a mandatory course. I realize perhaps this isn't practical, however, if you aren't willing to take a course to better understand your dog, then should you really own one? 3) Someone who wants to own a pitbull needs to be qualified. Lets face it, they are not your average dog that anyone can handle. They have special needs, and people need to be aware of that. Taurus ( my APBT ) was my first dog. I have had to learn things the hard way with him. If I was forced to take a course when I was younger and first got him, then perhaps I would have better understood him from the beginning??? Anyways, I realize these things will probably never happen, but I have thought quite abit about this, and I think this would be a god start to responsible breeding practices, and responsible dog ownership.
