  1. Aww poor Gil. This theory of all dogs having the capacity to swim intrigues me greatly, especially with people having expectations of water dogs like Poodles, Otter hounds and Newfs etc being natural swimmers. Any which way I'm glad that Gil is safe and give him a big Newfie hug from me please
  2. I would love to see pics of her, being the mad wild canid fanatic that I am :P

Her mum escaped after she had been mated and she ended up having the kitties at our surgery so I took one and am honoured to be owned by Abby. Bin Laden (originally called Vincent) 3 years old and a wee tear away rip! Opens the fridge and cupboards and helps himself so that us lot get the blame for leaving something open or eating all the food :o Mandela- South American Blue headed Green iguana - 7 years old 2 Zebra finch called Ziggy and Izzy 1 goldfish called Nemo usually have fosters from time to time as well that can be anything from an injured bat or fox to orphaned kittens/puppies
  6. Hi there, what has happened is that the vet has not injected the dog properly. The correct procedure is to lift the skin and insert the needle, then drop the skin and inject. Some vets are too ram stam and in a hurry and dont drop the skin. Air accumulates and a depot results after a few days or week following the injection. Take the depot in between your finger and thumb and massage it vigorously, and this will hopefully disperse it. If your pup is otherwise healthy then keep doing this and it will eventually disperse. Its not an inflammation in the sense of an allergic reaction if you don't notice any other physical symptoms with your pup.
  7. Its just wonderful to hear such great progress :D Hard work pays off!
  8. hehe yep K that counts! :D I was all surprised when I saw de Gouden Gids over there for the first time :P
  9. Looks like hes having great fun. Just a safety tip though, always always devise a course so that the dog is running straight at the tyre and never from an angle.
  10. Izzy at least giving her the dignity of being put out of pain will be a lot more respect than this little dog has ever had judging by the look of her.
  11. I had Meg at the park this afternoon and the tennis courts are back in action now that the weather is a bit better. Anyway I had her tennis ball in my pocket after we had a wee play and she knew it was there. We were walking past the courts and there was a spare ball lying on the other side of the wire. Meg stopped in her tracks and you could nearly see her thinking , then looking at me as if to say whats going on Mum, though you had my ball? Hehe it was just such a look of astonishment on her wee face! It didn't stop her trying to get the ball though :roflt:
  12. Aww you lot get cool wildlife like Possums. I've never seen a possum before! We just get foxes and moles and the likes of that :P
  13. Very interesting indeed Abker and thanks for posting. Its not actually anything that I've ever come across, but then again Lymes wouldn't be rife with our cooler climate.
  14. LOL that first photo has a distinct Harry Potter ish theme to it :D Very creative though
  15. Looks good to me too  Everyone has to learn how to do these things, so don't worry you certainly aren't an idiot :P
  16. I heard this on the news and read it in the paper.... there are just no words to describe the evil bas*ards.
  17. Hehe very sweet. Seen this site before when Sander made Meg "talk" lol, but very cute
  18. Many congrats Fred! :D Scoobie doooooo is going to be lots of fun
  19. Just to clear a few things up, there are internal and external glands and domestic dogs don't use their glands for territory marking as much as they would use them for faecal lubrication. True some dogs don't have problems, but I always think its better to prevent than have to deal with a problem. Usually in the surgery I would have seen dogs that had never had problems before, but were brought in with impacted glands and I mean impacted as in not fluid secretions; I mean hardened horrid threads of substance that caused the dog agony and infection. Fair enough everyone has their own opinion but mine is that its better to prevent a problem.
  20. Hey we have yellow pages here too :D
  21. hi HF no offense taken but yes all dogs of all sizes have anal glands therefore although it may not be obvious externally, the internal glands will still fill up and should still be squeezed now and again. Its just like accumulating ear wax. A little is functional but a lot presents problems, which is why anal squeezing should be done as routine with grooming/bathing.
  22. Aha the fun of anal glands! All sizes of dogs should have their anal glands squeezed every now and again to prevent impaction. The reason why anal glands are there is to lubricate and assist the passage of faeces. In teh wild dogs are obviously eating much larger food items and passing huge bowel movements. Our pet dogs have smaller faeces due to their commercial diets and therefore the little anal glands aren't used as much. Now the colour of anal fluid is variable between dogs and believe you me from working at the vets I have seen all shades of the rainbow! Ok the art to squeezing anal glands is as follows. Get someone to hold the dogs head. Other person (braver one) should elevate the tail to protrude the glands, then using a tissue press at the positions of 2 and 10 o'clock and milk the glands. Don't squeeze as per se, but gently milk the glands, until you get a good spurt of fluid coming out. Its a stinky job but its got to be done!

  25. Hey there, first of all the very best of luck with your venture and I hope it all goes well for you. A few years back I started up a similar venture of dog walking and pet sitting and called it Canine Companions, which as it developed wasn't very suitable and it was slightly adapted to Critter companions as I was petsitting for all sorts including goats and parrots! Its a lot of hard work, but also fun and you do tend to acquire some favourites. Although i don't do this sort of thing on a regular basis now, I still petsit for two Irish wolfhounds who are a pleasure to sit for. :D Good luck!
