1. Mary's Momma - nyla bones are good. The only original toy left from Kavik's puppyhood (and now the other two) is the nyla bone. It gets ignored for stretches and then suddenly they are all interested in it again, still in not bad shape, may have to replace soon though the ends are getting pretty rough.
2. Well you know how at shelters sometimes people state reason for getting rid of dog: divorce or split up. Well-reason for getting together: dog(s). He loved my dog, I loved his dog, we get along, it works, so we are not sure of our official status but its all good. :niewiem: :D
3. Yes - don't feed the troll or it will keep coming back (probably a stray - there should be a spay/nueter campaing for them)
4. Sophie I am sorry for your loss, 7 years is too short a time to spend with a loved member of your family. Sophie you and I do agree at least a bit - I said the only people who should breed should be people doing so deliberately for the betterment of the breed not that anyone with a "purebreed" dog should be ok to breed their dog. If your poor poodle's breeder had done this then you guy might have had less chance of illness (if it was related to genetics and breeding.) If only people interested in breeding for the betterment of the breed (as opposed to those making a buck or just trying to improve their reps by tossing out a few litters or those who breed because their dog is purebread) were breeding there would be WAY less purebread dogs produced. Not every purebread is wellbread just as not every mix benefits from mixed breed vigour (if the parent material is not strong they mix will suffer from any genetic flaws.) I like mixes, I have two mixed breed rescues and they are beutiful wonderful dogs. As for purebreeds that maul - a well bred dog (one bred by someone interested in betterment only) should have a good chance of being well tempered as temperment is one of the most important things to breed for. If a dog is aggresive or unstable it should not be bred no matter what its pedigree or other positve traits are. And I didn't say city people needed a herding animal - people like Hobbit need working animals. If you are refering to my dog (Kavik a BC) he is not bred from working lines, the last proven working dog in his pedigree was at least 5 generations ago (I think) he's pedigree does not even include sport only herding, its all agility/show/flyball. Hobbit could never make a good working dog out of Kavik. I also agree with you about education - education and desexing are the single most important thing in control of overpop of cats and dogs. If every shelter dog, pet only dog, or dog with poor genes or bad temperment was spayed or nuetered then in 5-10 years there would be no problem at all. If that were the case I would happily encourage very well educated, very controlled, very concerned research into new breeds if it would help dog health and make for dogs that fit the needs of society (wich is predominantly now a submissive to intermediate dog with good intelligence, high obedience with mostly low to moderate excercise and space requirements and that has a predisposition not to bark much, city dog, pet only dog) I repeat from prev. post - I have nothing against you or your dog. And also from prev. post - tell us about your dog, and do you have any pictures.
5. I'd say 20 regulars max with as many occaisonals and about that many once in a blue moon sort of posters. Maybe we should spread Dogos name around our training class and maybe around work there are plenty of dog owners here.
6. Don't mean to disturb anyone but recent events have caused me to be in a worried morbid state of mind. Do you have a plan to take care of your pet in times of natural or manmade disaster? How do you plan to get a panicked rover or kitty out from under the bed etc? Would you risk your life to save/protect your pet? What would you do if, in a seriouse disturbance causing long term shortages, you were short on food or water?
7. Again - isn't this their first and only post?
8. Back to the deleting old/unused accounts - What's up, are we going to see this change, do we need to vote, has it already been done but I'm too obtuse to have noticed?
9. Hmmm - a little clarification is nec. Eric who I have alluded to and is the guy who hijacked Pik's post while he was away and is affectionatly known as the Bellower around our place is . . . my brother. Pik is . . . not my brother.
10. Thanks HF, that was possibly the most helpful thing anyone has said on the war topic yet.
11. Nice catch HF.
12. Thanks but that's not Kavik - I have no pics of Kavik I can use here yet so it is a default pic from Dogos library of them. Kavik does not have the border collie neck ring, in fact not much white at all. (I nearly didn't get Kavik as there were three people interested in the two dog litter and we were the third interested party to make contact but the one person interested wanted the one pup that had a full neck ring as it had the typical border collie look so the breeder wouldn't sell her a pup at all as she thought it was dumb reason to get a high energy dog.) Kavik has the white chest blaze, a white tip on his tail, a smidge of white on each foot and his nose and a patch of white on the back of his neck.
13. There are larger kiddie pools but they are usually vinyl inflatablle jobbies - not the best choice for dogs. Depending on your yard and if you enjoy shoveling and installing things you could get one of the huge sized yard ponds. They are mad of hard plastic and come in many sizes and styles, there are some that are tierd (this is for planting and visual effect but the practival upshot is that your doggies can climb out) there are some that are deep at the deepest point and at least 9 square meters. You'd either have to have it installed or do it yourself - they have to be dug in as they are inteded to have the top sit flush with your lawn etc. You could build a frame for them I suppose but I'm not sure if this would be ok structurally speaking.
14. meh :niewiem: So what about the pics? Oh and welcome to Dogo.
15. I don't know about others but my feeling is this: There are so many dogs in shelters that the only reason to breed at all is to improve the existing breed itself in a significant way - like breeding out genetic defaults or to breed for a paticular purpose - people who need herding dogs for instance require very specific dogs. It's not that I have anything against you or your dog its just I think that if no one bred that dog that eventually you would have found a dog that would have worked for you in a shelter. We are too used to getting everything we can pay for - "Oh I love that dog, his cute and well-behaved and has a temperment that fits with my family but couldn't we get it in white instead of black." Or larger or smaller or with longer or shorter hair etc etc. Just my opinion though. :niewiem: But enough about that, tell us about your dog more, do you have pics?
16. Okay, I'll let my vet know our concerns, he's great, saved my old dogs life, always talkes about real good foods, takes an interest in the dogs state of mind etc.
17. Why do I recognize the name Flint River, wasn't there something here about it?
18. RnP - I agree, wherever resources are available to do so, every effort that can be safely and reasonably undertaken should be to rehabilitate and eventually rehome these animals.
19. Great suggestions Goo! Aside from a feeding shedule that has a last feeding 3 or so hrs before bed, water 2hrs before bed or so, and the 5min bathroom break with play afterwards only for "producing" you might look into the following: 1. The crate size is important, especially to start with. The crate should only be large enough to do any one of the following at a time - stand or sit or lie down or turn around. Any larger and puppy may think - Hey there's enough room for me to go and then I can lie over here. Section the crate off with plywood, chicken wire (or higher gage mesh if nec) etc. if it is too large for now. 2. Questions: What is the surface Drey normally goes on like? Does he have a blanket or mat in his crate? Do you do crate training throughout the day? 3. I have read of a method but have not tried it, this method was on the internet and there were no references but if you were desperate you could comtemplate attempting it. Put plastic or newspaper down under the crate, if the dog messes the crate do not remove him immediatley. This training is best done when you are home and awake. The idea is if the dogs mess his crate and you take care of it right away he is awarded with attention and getting out of the crate, even if its to get a bath  . Don't leave the dog in the crate for anymore than an hour with its mess (I think less would be fine myself, dogs usually don't like being in close proximity to the refuse), then take it out of the crate and put him on a lead outside while you clean the crate, again he is not rewarded for his mess immediatly, then take him in, clean him up if nec and place back in the crate for 5 min then release. :niewiem: I can see the logic behind the method but it might be hard to stomache in more ways than one. Good Luck - crate training is usually worth the effort. :D
20. No Hmmm I am not sick or drinking, I just happen to value the lives of the pet members of my family and it I would have zero acceptability for some dog killing my dog just as I have zero acceptability for a dog killing any other memeber of my family. I guess it just comes down to ZERO acceptability. Here's a comparison for you there is this criminal he is a killer but he only kills shoplifters. Now granted, IF I HAD to choose between a law-abiding citizen and a shoplifter being killed I would choose the shoplifter for death BUT NEITHER OPTION IS ACCEPTABLE! And that killer cannot be allowed to kill.
21. Sophie had a goldendoodle or goldenoodle - a Golden Retriever/Poodle. Generally a standerd size poodle is used in this mix as opposed to a Labrdoodle wich is a Labradour crossed with usually the next size down of poodle, whatever that size is called. They are trying to create an even smarter, even more obedient and "hypoallergenic" Golden Retriever or Labrador. Most of these dogs are first gens. but there are a few breeding programs that have up to 4rth gen last I heard. I don't agree with breeding even more dogs, we have too many already but sometimes these crosses are rescues from shelters. They are nice dogs but the name is a bit cutesy for my tastes.
22.
I know Daz can read my eyes and if i say his name and start to look he will jump up and run in that direction to "check things out"
Graaa! It has taken nearly a year to get Kavik to go the direction I point when he misses where the kong landed! What am I doing wrong, better yet what are you doing right?
23. Oh you can look at the Isn't that my coat thread for the smart things Kavik did a day or so ago if you want.
24. :o :o :o That is great, holy smart dog, batman!
