1. Hey Malamum what happened to your avatar?
2. rottie_mama - Some places are som overwhelmed by dogs to place they make very bad choices, they ignore the fact that bad placements often come back to them or another shelter organization or worse.
3. May take more time, she's still a puppy. Does she perform better when no one else is there - could be problem with distractions. You never reward her unless she does what she's supposed to right? It may be she doesn't see you as dominant enough to obey all the time - if that's what you think it is there are a number of things you can try to correct it.
4. Like Pik said, we have no smalls here but I have heard that many small breed dogs do best with soft training techniques, rewards, praise and clicker training.
5. Poofy - How old do you desex them at?
6. Well you could check for local home based adoption groups in your area, you foster the dog and interview potential adopters, they post his pic and do the paperwork - you'd have to look around and see if there is one in your area.
7. I like Ducky or Elmo.
8. doc - I am sorry to hear about Candy, what is Cushings? Oh and Tyr is 8-9months we think.
9. If you switch between Wellness types you should be able to switch over faster but you should still mix if you can, there are different ingredients in each. If your dog does not have allergies I would go with the chicken, here the chicken is a little cheaper and if your dog develops allergies to its current food you'll want the option to switch to something later maybe. Wellness is great food, nice choice, unfortunately Kavik will only eat it if he's starving, so we feed Mmillenia, not quite as good but he eats it.

Choke Collars

Any device should be used with care, they can all cause problems, make sure you have instructions on proper use. Nancy wrote:
The key with whatever you choose to use for training (choke, head collar or prong) is that you need to use that equipment to train the dog to walk nicely onlead. You don't want to continue to use it for the rest of the dogs life, just during the training period.
Excellent point. We are getting there with Kavik, he will now walk nicely without his halti if there are no distractions, we are still working on the distractions. We tried the correction chain with Tyr as he hates the halti - no amount of wearing it or treating him when he wears it has worked. I found the correction chain also worked to train us when to correct and pay way more attention to where the dog was so we corrected at the right time. Our trainer suggested a lupi for Tyr so we are using one or the other right now, we are a little worried about how the lupi will effect Tyr's hip, we'll see.
11. Kavik is content to let the others come with him when he checks things out, if they don't come he doesn't care but If they are all in the yard and I tell them to come in and Zaphod or Tyr don't snap to it he gives them whatfor.
12. Do keep trying Lucky, I know if my dog was lost I would want someone responsible to find him, if they didn't ditch him I'm sure their worried sick and will be glad it was you who found him. Now, to the other option, if they did ditch him :chainsaw1:

NutriCal

So this is dietary supplement that is designed to give pets who don't eat much the needed nutrients and some extra cals? I couldn't find an ingredients list, and haven't heard of it but a few years ago we did get a product from our vet for our 5lb cat that wouldn't eat, it did the same thing and was suppossed to stimulate her appatite some, worked well for us.
14.
Labs are even more. Makes me mad and sad at the same time.
Yellow - Have you looked at the numbers section of petfinder, there are thousands of Labs posted at anytime. I think that if you take all the Labs together (they are listed in several section) the Labs make up nearly a 1/4 of all dogs listed.
15. Maybe its different because I live in Canada, health care is covered, they can only sue me for pain and suffering, negligence, maybe plastic surgery but probably not. I know that most insurance companies will not cover at all for dog bites, but you can get homeowners no matter what the breed is, its just not covering the biting bit.
16. I have not heard of many behav. changes due to nuetering except that any dog nuetered before the age of 2-3 depending on breed is more likely to retain their puppyish sense of fun and play as they never fully mature but I don't know how accurate that is.
17. Ok so the insurance costs a lot more or they won't insure you if you have certain breeds, the site indicates this is due to risk of biting and liability right? When I got my homeowners and pet insurance quote I inquired if this covered bite liability and the guy said - absolutely not, if your dog bites someone you are solely responsible. So why not just do that, I mean if you have a breed with a greater statistical chance of biting someone, so what, the insurance company does not have to insure you for that right . . . or am I missing something?
18. Could be they need time to adjust or the paticular meat is not to their liking. Tyr will eat anything even lowgrade commercal dog food but he won't eat liver, even if he's VERY hungry, our other dogs will. Tyr will eat - beef, chicken, tuna etc. :niewiem:
19. Could have BMD or similar in him, but around her anyway there are almost no BMD crosses or BMDs in shelters - most of the breeders are very careful, they are not practical puppy mill dogs and they are relatively rare.
20. None of the above? A litter every other year max and only when appropriate and can get right mix and better breed? Interested in betterment of breed? Ensures proper pup goes to proper home? Is also involved in rescue? Is knowledgable about their breed, breeding, genetics, training, handling and at least one activity ie herding, agility, comp obedience, SAR, or showing? Has excellent lines, whether that means Ch or recognized working lines?
21. I guess so, I've never met a dog named Tyr but it dosn't seem so rare after all. What about Zaphod Beeblebrox and Kavik, they can't be that common of names . . . can they?
22. They are so cute, what is the one on the right?
23. Some vets will spay bitches while they are early in their pregnancy, there are apparently no harmful side effects, there are no unwanted puppies and it will certainly protect against future litters.
24. I guess it would be nordic, I found this on a website. Old Norse language From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Old Norse was the Germanic language once spoken by the inhabitants of the Nordic countries (for instance during the Viking Age). Its modern descendants are the West Scandinavian languages of Icelandic, Norwegian, Faroese and the extinct Norn language of the Orkney and the Shetland Islands as well as the East Scandinavian languages of Swedish and Danish. Norwegian was later heavily influenced by East Scandinavian. Don't we have someone from this region here, they may be able to clarify on how it might be pronounced?
25. Wow, you guys are fast, that new section is already up. :o
