1. I have note seen urine staining or claws like that on puppies so young. BTW I really need to get this one dog on their site, here is the description:
House broke and lease trained
Now I'm not sure what lease training is but it sure has to be useful. It might have something to do with the fact that their house is broke though.
2.
wouldn't take her eyes off the petsitter
Sorry for the sidetrack but . . . my goodness Tammy, did your petsitter find that disturbing? Sharpeigirl - If she had done it all along I wouldn't be SO worried. As this is a change I might be tempted to see the vet if it persists.
3. Petfinder will definately be the first stop. It is perfect for people who want to adopt but have very specific needs.
4. A freind of mine is looking for a dog. Her dog died over a year ago and her c@t died 4 months ago. She enjoys having a c@t and a dog. Their last dog was a small to mid-sized mutt that adored and played with their c@t all the time. She really wants a dog that will get on well with a c@t and preferably play with it. She can if need be get both dog and c@t from puppy/kitten age but will adopt if at all possible. She would prefer a dog that is between 20 and 60 lbs. She would prefer the dog not be a massive shedder. She can offer enough excercise for everything but the most demanding breeds. She would prefer a very sociable breed as she took her old dog many places. If everything else was equal and she absolutely could not decide between two different dogs she has a preference for erect ears but its no big deal. Can anyone suggest a likely breed. (And any c@t breed suggestions are welcome as well.)
5. Just one more joy of dogs. Oh well, I got most of it out last night and brushed the rest out today.
6. I love walking in the woods. I hate walking in the mud. Therefor in the spring I walk the dog on the paved trails in Springbank Park. I got the boys home and Kavik was covered with burrs (not Zaphod who has short fur of course.) I just don't understand how he manages to find burrs so often. The paved trail that stands at least 8 ft from the nearest shrubbery. :motz: :hmmmm: :placz:
7. Crate training takes time. There are sections in this link that address crate training, just look for the relevant headings: http://www.dogomania.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10960&sid=9d02b5b9ea0f1d3b730fcdbb5ba205ef Another possibility would be Rescue Remedy or a similar product. It is a herbal calming product for dogs. I've had best success adding it to a high strung animals water. It would be helpful during your dogs adjustment period. You can usually only find it at pet specialty stores.

Cutting Nails

I have got to get a dremel. Would work for Zaphod but I wonder about Kavik. I have been desensitizing him so I can trim his foot hair but it is slow going - I think the poor little guy has very ticklish paws.
9. At 113lbs maybe she has painful joints or gets tired out from playing too fast???

Bark collar?

Oh, another suggestion: Have you tried the "watch me" or "look" training thing. If you can get him to focus on you on command he may be distracted enough to stop barking.

Bark collar?

I know citronella collars are generally more humane than shock collars but I would shop around for one that works like a good shock collar. The good shock collars allow the dog something like 3 seconds of barking, if it goes past that they get a warning beep, if it persists they get the equivalent of a light static shock and it goes up from there. This allows the dog its normal warning/introductory/greeting bark etc and lets them know if they keep it up they will get the shock. If you can find a citronella collar that does that it would be best. Another note on both the citronella and shock collars: most work by vibration so you should take them off if your dog is going to be bouncing about and playing or they can go off and give your dog the wrong message. The umbilical training method is good too. I used to let my boys drag a 10 ft lead around the house to save having two dogs tangled up to me but sometimes they would knock things over with the leads.
12. See about getting a used crate. Crate Zeus in it, probably in the same room Sassy sleeps in. Sassy is safe, Zeus is inside and warm, you get to sleep through the night  and used crates usually aren't too costly.
13. Very cute. I'm no expert but my first thought was apricot. Maybe if HF sees it she can tell you more.
14. I know they remember people. One of my brother's freinds scared Kavik badly when he was a pup. This guy only comes to town and visits 2 days a year but Kavik remembers him. He tucks tail and barks for the first 5 mins. of the guys visit and then if everything remains calm he will desperately want snuggles and attention from the guy.
15. Thanks Mei-Mei.
16. We should make a sticky of this and leave it in breeding. That way we can refer bybers to it instead of repeating the same arguments over and over again.
17. Well since this I have learned that there a plenty of dogs that can have black spots on their tongues and gums. Which is confirmed by Zaphod as I don't really see any chow in him now that he is all grown up.
18. Well if she is fine when you're home I wouldn't think it was uti. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check though. I don't know what to suggest. It sounds like everything is as it should be. Most dogs won't soil their 'dens' but - most is not ALL. I suppose you could try going back to the beginning. Crate her while your present for short periods. Increase to somewhat longer. Introduce short periods while your away etc. Consider leaving a very safe chew toy if your comfortable with the idea. I'd also remove the towel and do a really complete sanitizing of the crate and area. You could also try the schedule thing, gradually increasing time. I think a possible schedule is included in the housetraining sticky in training. I'm not sure any of the above is the solution but . . . I don't know what else to suggest.
19. Who knows what little quirk in her mind causes this behaviour. As for uti - how is she at home with you for 4 hours without an outside break? How big is the crate and how big is she?
20. I think your situation is a bit different. Your dog basically chooses whether he is on the chain outside or inside with you. Ideally it would be great if every dog had a huge fenced yard and free access doggy door but that isn't realistic probably. So your dog is safely contained and can come in when he wants, that's not a problem.

Crate Training

This Houstraining Link has stuff on Crate Training. http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=10960
22. I would suggest, in additon to the above, getting a baby gate to seperate one part of the house from another. Place the baby gate high enough off the ground that the c@t can scoot underneath but the dog can't. This gives the c@t a place to escape to. With a quiet safe place the c@t can adjust at her/his pace and may be more relaxed around the dog. If the c@t is wound up it may act in a way that stimulates the dog. Maybe think about rescue remedy for the transition period.
23. What was it that HF suggested for tear stains on white dogs? Anyone remember? Maybe that would help. Is it a vineger water solution?

Husky/Lab info

Puppies are different, slightly chubby puppies are fine and oh so cute. They usually thin out at adolescence.
25. I would love to use the vacuum on my boys but they think it is a loud creature so its a no go. I would try it just introduce it slowly with lots of positive reinforcement. Otherwise those rubber shedding brushes or gloves are pretty good. I had this problem a while ago and was using a regular dog brush. Someone here also advised me to brush Zaphod when he was wet for two reasons: 1. More hair comes out 2. It comes out in damp clumps rather than wisps that fly away and get into everything. This has been incredibly helpful and whoever gave me the advise: Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you :modla:
