1. Awww, that is a great storey. My mum's 25lb cockapoo once protected my 5lb c@t from a 18-20lb tom that wondered into our yard while Mroo was tied out. He looked like standing between them was the last thing he wanted to do but he wouldn't move.
2. I don't think you're a freak, however, the altruistic value of one life vs another life may not be the issue, at least not in its entirety. Which life do you have more responsibility for, if either.
3. I would never hesitate to adopt a three-legged dog, especially after I saw a video of a 2 legged dog zipping about.
4. I was thinking the same thing - probably he's a bit nauseated but with repeated short trips, eventually lengthening them it should pass and everything else you are doing is great.
5. I was thinking there might be some sort of collie in there as well, although the markings could look a bit like a Saint's as well. I guess you'll just have to keep posting pics as he grows so we can see. :D
6. Dog beaches are great. In some cases they deter people from bringing their dogs to inappropriate swimming locations because they have an alternative and they are sooo fun. We have one that is an hour from here and we go as much as we can.
7. Bumping so that some of our knowledgable breeders will see it.
8. Nature's Miracle or an enzyme based pet cleaner - for store bought. On my carpet if I go with home made I use a fairly dilute bleach and water solution but my carpet is quite pale.
9. I saw the title and shouted "throw them back." However, that probably wouldn't go over to well. To bad really because it would make me feel better. Cinco's idea was probably better. Thanking the tenant in some way is a good idea. Also it is important to at least point out to the parents and children that what they did is cruel, innapropriate and grounds for a cruelty charge.
10. Kavik is usually fairly tolerant and doesn't react much beyond supersquirminess. If he gets very frustrated he growls in a nasty way or sometimes even shows his teeth and then runs away with his tail tucked. My brother gets quite annoyed when he does this but I'm not sure how to take it. He has to be able to express when he really doesn't like something somehow.
11. Some dogs have really sensitive feet and that makes it really tough. What colour nails does Bailey have?
12. It would help to know the circumstances, the breed, the age, the health conditions etc. :)
13. I'm sorry for you and Laurel, mostly about the jerk vet tech. Many dogs do just fine after loosing their sight, with Laurel being a scent hound I hope that helps it go as smoothly as possible for her and you. I remember you mentioning your suspicions about her sight very early on and wondering if that has something to do with her difficulty accepting (Justin?) early on. She is lucky to be with someone so caring and aware.
14. Kavik means "little wolf" or something like that. Zaphod is a character from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who was a bit of a goof and thought he was the centre of the universe.
15. Kavik may not drink a lot but Zaphod does. I have to use a 4L pot for his water so I know how you feel. I understand not being able to come home part way through the day - most people can't. I would just suggest more and/or bigger water bowls.
16. I fostered a dog, Tyr. He had very bad HD, he was quite young. We put him on glucosamine/chondroitin. It cost us just over $30 for a 500ml container of liquid med. The container lasted over a month. He enjoyed the flavour and would do tricks for the med. He rarely needed aspirin, perhaps once a week and apparently if we had tried yucca in addition to his gluc/chon he might not have needed that. He played a bit less than my other two dogs but he was an active dog in a three dog house. By the time he was 18 months he, according to his foster home did not need the glucos/chon although he was getting a large breed dog food with glucos/chon. He will likely have to go back on his meds sometime around 6-7 years of age according to his vet's best guess.
17. There is a vet in London ON that has been tracking his own experiences with dogs with HD in his practice. He has made some interesting, unofficial, observations. The dogs with HD he has seen and have not procedures performed but instead have recieved glucosamine and chondroitin ($25/month for a 75 lb dog) have shown marked improvement in their symptoms after or around 18 months. This improvement lasts until the dog is a senior or early senior dog (6 to 9 years depending on breed.) The problem is that not ALL dogs show this improvement. I know this is a tough decision. I know you will do what you think is best for Pooh. I would discuss all aspects of each option with your vet in detail. Ask what is involved in post op recovery for each operation. HD sucks but it is manageble. People suffer with similar ailments and live mostly happy, normal lives.
18. Also see the crate training section in the training sticky in the training section. http://www.dogomania.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10960&sid=4de0cf0fc804fa60c5f36e893e219b70
19. I would say the dogs I'm seeing are 8-12 inches to the shoulder, also their faces seem a bit pointier than Shelties. Shelties really have nothing to do with Collies? Cool. What is the origin of a true Sheltie than?
20. OK so there seems to be an influx of "Mini Shelties" in my area. What is with this? I mean, it seems to me that a Sheltie is a small rough Collie. And if a Shelite is too big for you - shouldn't you be getting a c@t or something? Are these a real breed or is someone breeding mutantly small Shelties hoping to create some new health defects?
21. Another tip for increasing water intake: You need something your dog really wants. For Kavik I use cardboard paper towel rolls - he loves to play with them but they get messy so he rarely gets them. I put the roll behind a water source and encourage Kavik to drink. If he drinks he gets to play with the roll for just a short time. I can then repeat to get him to drink more. Now once in a while he'll go get a drink just to see if I'll give him a roll. I had to start this because Kavik seems to forget to drink. And sometimes he gets a bit dehydrated.
22. I have no idea. Seems pretty odd to me. I suppose it could be so people have time to . . . er . . . buy a muzzle?
23. As many of you may know the Ontario BSL law, or at least a portion of it, was passed a few months ago. American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, crosses of these breeds and any dog that "looks" significantly like these breeds could be subject to it. They must be muzzled in public, no new ones can come into the province, owners must carry a huge additional liability insurance and they must be speutered. However, I don't think any of the municipalities have much interest in enforcing it. I have seen lots of dogs that could easily be identified as one of the BSL breeds walking about unmuzzled. In fact, there were two at the offlead dog park unmuzzled and offlead. It will be interesting to see if this continues. I hope it does - it will make Bryant seem foolish and impotent.
24. If it is the same bird he must be the same one that keeps diving in front of my car as I drive down the highway at 100km/hr - suicidal birds.
running (Zeke after the bird, Travis out of the room)
25. What the hell is the point in this:
Bernese Mountain Dog-Border Collie Bordernese
