1. This advice ..... I am listening too. Riding my pony..........out of this discusion.
2. Ickle, maybe YOU are the lucky one that has been around very well bred and very well cared for (well trained) Shelties. That is wonderful. The ones that some of us have been around, have been barkers. Probably due to bad breeding, bad owners, and no training. Training helps any breed, but no amount of training can help bad genetics (to a certain degree).
3. Horsefeathers, should I bring up the box of x-rays that I viewed, recently?? Yeah, probably not........
4. "Hobbit, I'm sorry but not at one point did I see that Gordon was having a go at you, all I could see is her taking her years of research and experiences and applying them to what people have said. She was probably questioning things to sort things out in her own mind, when you've spent that much time researching something you tend to question things if they pop up and contradict what you have spent your whole life studying, I know this because my dads a scientist and anything that sounds a bit strange to him he will spend weeks trying to find out the whole story etc if he has to". Why is this being brought BACK up? I stick by my posts and would rather NOT have to go back into it. I, TOO, have done years of research....never mind...I am NOT going into this, AGAIN.
5.
6. Was he in drag that day??
7. Okay, I need to increase the dosage on my medication.....I would have sworn in front of the judge that Forest was a Basset Hound. Where did I get that??
8.
Hobbit, I sure wish you could explain that to my husband. He wanted a BC before we got the Shibas and he plans on getting on after the Shibas cross the Rainbow Bridge. I don't think he understands what these dogs need to be kept happy. He thinks a little horseplay, walks, and lovin' will be enough for this herding breed.
Some BC's are stronger herding bred than others. Ask yourself why so many (that's so VERY many) end up at the pound/shelters/rescue? It's because someone thought they were pretty or wanted a pet and didn't understand the full scope of a BC and how they think. EVERYTHING to them is potentially something to herd (those that are bred this way). They can NOT be kept for extended periods of time in a crate, small kennel or confined area --- they will go crazy. I've heard this so many times, "I have a big back yard" --- this is simply not enough. In town, the pedestrian traffic and vehicular traffic will cause this BC to become a barker and a fence runner. He will start digging or climbing the fence in an effort to herd the big shiney sheep (cars), bicycles, pedestrians...what ever moves. The owner gets sick and tired of this.....the BC ends up in rescue.
9.
Has anyone else heard this? Someone on another board was talking about it, and they said that have have been several instances where dogs that have been having seizures didn't have them anymore after they were switched to a heartworm preventive without ivermectin.
There are rumors about this. Some dogs are sensitive to any kind of pesticide. Our Border Collie had a seizure (12 hrs) after being given her regular dose of Interceptor (Milbemycin). She is 2 yrs old and has been on Interceptor since she was 5 months old with no side effects (until now). Ivermectin and "ectin" based products have been known to cause seizures with fatal results in herding bred dogs (I guess I should add *alleged* as not to be sued), along with diminished fertility and severe birth defects. I was not aware that Ivermectin had been FDA approved for anything but livestock (not dogs/cats etc...), even though it is administered to pets. This may have changed since the patent has expired, recently.
10. Yeah, I've had post disappear, recently too. It corrected itself, I guess. But the posts never returned.
11. Yellow -- please don't take this like I'm being hateful, because I am not. BUT: Border Collies were bred (created) for generations as livestock herding dogs (more like sheep dogs). They were not bred as a *SHOW* dog, they were not bred as a *SPORTS* dog, they were bred as a *HERDING* dog meant for HERDING LIVESTOCK. When AKC (the evil empire) and the show people saw an opportunity to cash in on a very popular breed, they did so by recognizing them as a breed. This is going to be and already has been, the demise of the working Border Collie. You can already see a big difference in the way the *show* Border Collies look verses the *working* Border Collie. Depending on the bloodline/breeding the Border Collie can be hyper, some that are well breed are not. Please do not contribute to the demise of the working Border Collie and purchase one from strong herding lines. PLEASE search for one that has been bred for many generations for *show*, as the herding instinct may have already been bred out. If people as you (no offense meant) continue to purchase good herding bred BC's and breed them specifically for conformation and sports --- you are breeding the natural herding ability and desire to work out of these dogs. I, for one, depend on herding bred dogs to help on the ranch. I am not against anyone owning a Border Collie, if they plan on using it for what it is meant to be......A HERDING DOG.
12.
And Hobbit, what the h*** were you thinking???
Thinking? Um......not much, huh!!  Oh, I really just thought that I could do two things at once.....knowing very well that I can't.
13. :o :o AND imagine the size of the goat pills!!
14.
Bensam--I know about that fine line! I too don't think it's right to tell people in other countries what to eat. I understand that in some cultures they think it's totally disgusting that we eat eggs because eggs hold the core of life. I don't know how they would define 'humane killing.' In Korea some people eat dogs, a practice which most of the world abhors. In my opinion you can't tell them not to eat dogs, but there should be a way to legislate how the dogs are treated and finally killed. I know how nasty this all sounds... :-?
I agree with you guys....... In my Native American opinion....treat the animal with respect before, during and after you take its life. Thank the animal for the nourishment that it gives you. The asian culture have no respect for food or the manner in which they kill it.
15. Some of them BARK alot, NON-STOP bark, all day and all night. You must be willing to do lots of obedience training and keep up with it.
16.
I've read of them is the cattle lining up waiting to be shot, not wanting to anthropomorphise here but surely they must know somehow what's going to happen to them? :(
bk --- I've been on plenty of kill floors, they DO know what is going on. They try to escape, but can't. The look in their eyes are heartbreaking. I will never go to another slaughter house, ever.
17. Make sure the biscuits are human edible, just in case the dog doesn't like---at least you'll have a snack! The job search --- yes chin up, fingers crossed for you, too. Have you ever noticed that there are millions of jobs posted but when you call or email -- the know NOTHING about the posted job! :o
18. Kid mill........hum.....that sounds like an idea. We already have a pasture full of sheep & cows.......I DO like kids better. AND I could sell them to just anyone that happened by AND at the Holiday Inn.
19. Yes, these are genetically altered goats, called "Goatzilla's". They are 7 foot at the shoulder and can leap like you wouldn't believe. We *designed* them and sell them for WAY over the normal going price for a goat. They are disease, parasite and injury resistant. They have good temperments and are easy to housebreak. sorry couldn't resist! They are *normal* Boer/Nubian cross goats. The males (billy) weigh about 120lbs, the females (does, nanny) weighs from 65 to 100lbs. The Kelpie is a 9 wk old pup. He and his siblings put the goats in the trough. The goats are very dog broke and will usually move when the pup asks it to (easy to build the confidence up on a young dog). We "herd" test the pups at 8wks (and later), to see who is showing the strongest desire and natural ability. Then the little guys are not allowed to harass the goats all day long, because they will. The pups are started on ducks or roosters, not goats (because they can't out run them, yet and it frustrates them when they can't and hurts their confidence).
20. :o Hey, I know what you mean. When I cook, the dogs hide.
21. Thanks Anne. These people are "buying" non-realistic characteristics of a dog that is being reported as *perfect* by a bunch of fraudulent liars (for any other better word). These designer dogs are not perfect, they don't have the best of both worlds, they are not disease free, they are not of perfect temperment.....etc... and these buyers are falling for the sellers sales pitch. Some people are just not going to listen --- case in point "Jeff" with the so called *attack* puppy. He has his mind made up, but no one can say you guys didn't try. Still ranting....... :evilbat: :evilbat:
22.
Jacsmom, It's more than just a look thing. Heelers need their tails for work. The stumpy tail cattle dog is born without a tail as the breed description depicts. They look a like heelers, I wonder if that is the breed they have on the farms over there.
No Anne, the idiots are docking the Heeler tails, they aren't Stumpy-tails. Back yard breeders *think* that Heelers MUST have their tails docked, these are also the same people that advertise, think and say that they have blue and red Heeler cross puppies. NO SUCH thing. They are ALL ACD's, they just happen to be red or blue. You can't cross them, because they are the SAME breed. It's like a large pet peeve for me since we have ACD's and have had them for many, many years. People who dock do not know anything about the breed, they can't tell you where they originated from or that the tail is part of their characteristic. AND...another pet peeve, they always say, "Yeah, they look good riding around in the back of my pick-up truck". Oh, that really just makes me want to strangle them. And trust me.....that's ALL the dog knows how to do is to jump in the back of the truck. These people don't spend ANY time with the dog at all. They don't care, as long as the dog rides in the back!........okay, I'll stop with the ranting and raving....
23. Hershey......my vote.
24.  And the Corgi's would love them too!
25. Oh that would be nice. Thanks!
