1. http://www.all-creatures.org/anex/dog.html  " Someone's stolen or abandoned Saint Bernard stands alone among the cages stuffed with dogs. The animals show signs of neglect. This is Moran Market in Sungnam City. It boasts the largest dog market in Korea. There are days of the week that are considered "dog days," when you can experience the true scope of this illegal trade. This photo was taken with hidden camera. Since the 1988 Seoul Olympics, word has spread that international animal welfare groups are campaigning against this industry, and dog meat dealers have become hostile to those who disapprove. In fact, you will now find plain-clothed guards posted at the markets to prevent foreigners from approaching. (We have received reports of Saint Bernard dogs being raised for meat in China.) " "This is the wife of the dog butcher standing in front of an over-crowded cage of "meat dogs". Don't get angry at these Koreans because they treat dogs this way and eat their flesh. Our American farmers treat chickens and pigs the same way, and most people eat their dead bodies. We just need to look at ourselves in the mirror a little harder." "In the Philippines, dogs are usually sold at markets while still alive, their front limbs dislocated and tied painfully behind their backs, and a jagged tin can rammed over their jaws to make them easier to handle. All in blatant disregard of a law that carries a minimal penalty which the police do not bother to even try to enforce." I think this has been posted before... so sad... (Make sure to check out the website... beware there are very graphic images!)
2. Wow Courtnek! Thay's amazing! :o I love "dog saved my life" stories, they always bring tears to my eyes! Luarel saved your life! What a good dog! :D I think she deserves a pizzle or two (or maybe even a steak?) *hugs Luarel* Way to go Luarel! :D
3. Sushiwelldone, I agree 100%! Some people amaze me! They're always looking for ways to save money, and when they do get the chance to get a dog for a cheap 60-75 dollars (not to mention save a life), they go and waste $600 on an ill mixed breed! Those good $600 could have been donated to a shelter, a seeing eye dog organization, or used to buy a dog from a real breeder and not some puppy mill! And what about the real breeders that spend years and years researching pedigrees, years going to shows, years trying to perfect their lines. Is it fair on them? Why should a Puppy Mill (they obviously are, they have more than two breeds) get all the credit and money, when a real breeder is the one people should be buying from? What about the shelters FILLED with mixes for cheap prices? Don't they deserve that $600? People amaze me  Not an expert on the breed...but this doesn't look like a Can Corso to me? :-?
4. HAPPY BELATED 6th BIRTHDAY HOLLY! :laola: :laola: :laola: :BIG: :BIG: :BIG: :multi: :multi: :multi: :bday: :bday: :bday: :new-bday: :new-bday: :new-bday:
5. Awwww, I love snow! Especially snow AND dogs! Looks like they enjoyed the snow! Cody and Zoey are growing fast! :D It's not fair, we don't get snow here! :( Rowie may never see snow! :bigcry:
6. The nerve of some people! The nerve! This poor sweet creature was just HIT BY A CAR, and she asks for an adress?! She expected your friend to PAY for the damage on the car? Your friend should sue, she really should. Was it the lady in the cars fualt? Was she going too fast or was talking on the phone. Your friend could get the lady to pay for all the medical bills if she sues or threatens to! My rainbow bridge girl, Honey, was almost hit by a car two times! :o Both times we were at the park and we'd be crossing the road to my house (she was trained to be off leash) and BOTH times a car was speeding and we'd run out of the way but poor Honey wouldn't run fast enough and the car would have to screech and stop. First time this couple came out and began screaming at us for not having Honey on a leash (there is no leash law here, so I had the right to) and the second time the guy just drove off after we got Honey out of the way. Poor baby. :( She wouldn't stop shaking till we got home! They didn't even ask if Honey was okay! Urgh, horrible people! :x
7. Oh Shar, I'm so sorry. I really don't know what to say. Good Luck with Sassy! *hugs* Sending positive energy your way! You can make it Sassy! Get well soon....! Shar, do you want Sassy to live a long life with drugs and confusion or a shorter but happier life? This is the decision you have to make, it is entirely up to you though! Good Luck you two, you can make it through the rain! :D
8. Way to go Pits and (the hottie) Frankie Muniz! :D I've heard about Frankie Muniz and his love for Pits before, what about J.Lo? Did you guys see her video clip (forgot which one)? It had a adorable slobbery Pit Bull in it! :D
9.
OK not to add oil to the fire but I read the letter from Tia and I can understand she is upset..here we are seemingly questioning her evaluation of this dog becuse we have been blinded by our hearts and our "biased" view of him based on what some volunteer wrote about him in the first place...quite obviously the volunteer was mistaken about this dog and I accept Tias judgement that he was not to be placed with other dogs and was not suitable for adoption..here is a case of what is best for the dog not what is best for us or what we want...the dogs needs come first..and Killer needed to be set free...set free from his mental bondage and the chains he had to live in because of it...he was unstable and no dog should live like that...and sadly as we al know there is always another deserving dog out there...lets chalk this one up as "experience" and move on to our next challenge...in loving memory of Killer we carry on...who's with me?.....K.
I am K! Poor Killer, RIP sweet baby!
10. The site is great! And the photos were excellent, I agree! :D

Killer

Rest In Peace Sweet Killer.... We will all be thinking of you, day and night. Have fun at the rainbow bridge and wait for us there. Now you will get nothing but happiness...
12. That's great! :D It's wonderful when you meet owners of the same breed, isn't it? Or even different breeds! When you bond with dog owners, it's always magical! :D
13. Poor Rio! :( Thank God he has you, he is one lucky boy! Rubber Band? That's sick! That must have been soooo painful...poor baby! :( I remember once when I was 7 years old (or somewhere around that age) a stray was hanging around our area, she was so sweet! She was pregnant (suprise, suprise) and had a docked tail. Only the tail wasn't professionaly docked, it was cut off by scissors or a knife. I could see that clearly, the end of her tail wasn't healed properly, and was red. Someone (no doubt a BYB or iressponsibly 'breeder') had cut her tail off, no anesthetic, no pain killers, nothing! Poor baby! A few weeks later someone called the BSPCA and they took her away. I never heard of her again. :(
14. Wow, what a beauty! :iloveyou: She's gorgeous, and those eyes are so warm and brown! :iloveyou: Good Luck with her Marebear, and keep us posted!
15.
I currently have 5 of my own kids..and the "extra" baby and 6 dogs so yes almost ful time work if you can count 24/7 as full time...I spent all day today finding a home for an 11 year old Bull that had been dumped (yes he is placed now) and I seriously dont have time for poo posting "guests" and trolls and this forum being shot to sh*t does not please me at all :x ...you'll have to excuse my honesty..I am having a bad day... :-?
Way to go K! :D I would never be able to handle that much work! :o
16. Sorry, above post was me!
17.

And yet, most of you would 'look down' on me because I don't research pedigrees, the pups usually don't see a vet, and I don't do extensive background checks on prospective parents. However, I'm happy with my puppies & the job I do.
I don't look down on anybody. I don't think most of us do. All we are arguing for is what is best for the dogs. That's it.
Well put Mei-Mei. Also, if you don't research pedigrees, how do you know the parents of the pups were free of genetic diseases? What if the great grandparents of the male had HD and it got passed on to the pups? Seeing as you studied being a vet in college, I'm sure you know how horrible HD can be. (Just ask StarFox, her dog has it. Get well soon Zebra!) What breed are you breeding? All breeds are prone to one genetically passed disease or another, that is why it is important to know your dog's pedigree. Sorry, but pedigrees are important to me, not to prove that my dog is "pedigree" & of "blue blood" but to make sure s/he is free of any genetic diseases. You don't sound like a BYB though, because a BYB does it for the fast buck. You don't do it for the money, do you? :-?
18.
He is now Webster! :D My brother wouldn't let me name him Jet :( , because for some reason it made him think of Jasper, who was a beagle my aunt babysat one summer, and my brother didn't like him that much. I'm thinking that perhaps Jet can be Webster's nickname maybe... Then my brother'll be happy, and Web'll have the most popular choice for an "onofficial" name! Or as a middle name maybe.. I need to decide those now too! :)
Congratulations! :D Give webster a kissy for me! :buzi:
19. Ohmydog! Sorry, that above post was me! Ummm....excuse the last part... that was Yatooma!  I couldn't edit it out becuase I was a guest then!
20. Awwwwwww Starfox, hun! *Hugs* What a dillema! As Ellie said, do what your heart tells you to do. Do you think Zebra will be able to handle 12 weeks of confinment? And then (and I think this is what they do?) physical therapy and such. The exercises to strengthen his hips? What about the cost? 12 thousand is ALOT of money, did both parents agree to this? Make a list of the pro's and con's. Just clear your mind and think. Will Zebra be able to cope? Most importantly, will you? Remember, whatever the chioce, we are all here for you! :buzi: And whatever the choice is, it would be for the best. Wether to go for the surgeries or not. Your such a brave person! And remember, there is no such thing as blabbering on Dogo!
21. False alarm! Turned out I typing in my e-mail password, not my Dogo one!
22.
coddling doesn't do any good. there are two things you should avoid however, too many stairs and jumping down (up isn't as bad by far), for example out of a car etc. - and that is because they are very predisposed to herniated disks. not a pretty thing to deal with, especially if they don't heal properly. good muscle tone is important in dachshunds to support their back and far less likely to appear if a dog is well exercised. most dachshunds i see are either too fat or are lean but without real muscle tone because they hardly get any exercise. too many people mistake them for couch potato dogs, and they easily turn into just that if they don't get accustomed to regular exercise. it angers me every single time i hear "dachshunds are nice apartment dogs and don't need much exercise", because following that advice is the straightest way to develop yourself an animal that just fits all the "wiener dog" stereotypes to a T. walking a mile a day is for example not what i would consider exercise. it's a warm up if anything. lots of running, off leash if possible, is the best exercise you can offer a dachshund. contrary to what most people believe, they make great jogging partners too and are great on the hiking trail - after all they were bred for hunting, and not only in badger or fox holes, but also for tracking in dense undergrowth - NOT for sitting on people's laps all day. personally i would also never buy a dachshund from a show line, no matter how "pretty" they look in all their "rare" colors. those animals are mostly so far removed from what a dachshund is supposed to be that it isn't even funny anymore. anyone who is considering getting one, do yourself a favor, buy from a working line and don't pick a pup because of the coat color. it's well worth the longer search for a good breeder who actually works his dachshunds.

Quote: too many people mistake them for couch potato dogs, and they easily turn into just that if they don't get accustomed to regular exercise I agree 100% with this. Like most dogs, this is a breed that was bred for a purpose...not to be a lap dog, but to hunt, in small enclosed places, like holes and tunnels...people NOW realize that BC's dont do well without stimulation, but no dog is happy as a couch potato unless that is what they were bred to be... Dachsunds are hunting dogs....they need exercise, and it's even good for them to have "practice holes" that they can slither into and out of.... My foxhound enjoys herself chasing squirrels around the yard...I doubt I would trust her with any cat but mine (he is king of the castle and the dogs answer to him, and they KNOW it...lol) but I would not make her stop chasing squirrels...she is a hunting dog. she needs to run, to play with other dogs (raised in a pack of 20) and to hunt...you have to give them a little lattitude to be what WE designed them for...
Agreed. Speaking of all the back problems, and breeding for show and etc. Do any of you know the Dandie Dinmont Terrier? Poor souls! The working lines are MUCH better than the show lines. I did a research on them once, and the show dogs are so low that their chests touch the ground! Even worse, their backs are really long. The one in my dog book has very short legs, a very long back, and his chest touches the ground! I went to the AKC website and saw a video of them, and the (what I think are) show Dandie's didn't run very well. :-? See what I mean? Remember, I'm not the breed's expert so please correct me if I'm wrong! :)
23.
Oops sorry, Rowie...  Well.. They heard both sides of the stories (Even though mine was MUCH shorter  ) I think it's wrong just because Color is old that her dad should let him loose... And get her a Bull Terrier and a German Shepherd after that?! What does he think these dogs are.. Some kind of toys that he can exchange anytime he wants?! I'm sorry, I mean I really like the girl but her dad seems.. :-? ....
haha, tis all right me dear! Its really sad isn't it? :( One thing that annoys me though, the WHOLE family should have agreed on getting a dog, not just one person. :(
24.

As they evolved to become terrestrial animals, fossil records show that the 5th toe (dew claw) was significantly reduced in size, and eventually became vestigial (of no use as they were no longer needed due to the behaviour and habitat change). The paw pad also reduced in size. Dogs today have dewclaws just like wolves but these dwclaws are unecessary, unless any of you have dogs that climb trees! Natural selection isn't allowed to take place due to humans interfering continually and breeding, but if it were, then dogs today wouldn't even have dewclaws. Why have something you don't need?
hmm, somewhere there seems to be a gap in that explanation tho. if it were that simple, why do wolves and other wild canids still have dewclaws? i'd say they have as much (or as little) use of them as domestic dogs do and humans haven't interfered in their evolution.
Good point, Guest! :) Thanks for the post, Kat! :)
25. Hmmm... I heard a different story. :-? I intended to write a post to you all, but deez beat me. :) Here's my post, it's a bit big on details.
:-? I'm in a pickle, and I don't really know what to do. A very good friend of mine is an irresponsible breeder. When we first met, and we met because of dogs, I asked her how she was involved with dogs (show, breeding, agility..etc.) and she said she was a breeder. Let me remind you she is 14 or 15 years old. Can you imagine someone that young being a dog owner (with no help from parents), let alone a dog breeder? I was just about to get defensive and tell her she was too young to be a breeder, but I didn't want her to think of me as some kind of phsyco. I went along with it, asking what breed? She said that she bred boxers, Great Danes, Salukis, and Dalmations of ''pet quality''. That's when it went too far, I started telling her about the over population problem and how there where enough dogs in shelters etc. She said that she knew all of that but that she was a responsible breeder. She is one of my closest friends and has been there for me in all my times of need. I'll make that clear from the start. I love her to bits, she's so wonderful! She makes you feel good, always. Even when she's in a bad mood, she'll hide it just to make you happy. That's how wonderful she is. Now she is NOT, I repeat, NOT a Puppy Miller. She is not in it for the money. She does it becuase she thought she could do it, it sounded fun. You know those kind of people? Who don't mean harm? All her "breeding" dogs are at the stables where she goes horse riding. Have no idea why. The only dog she has at home is her Belgian Sheperd, Color. He is 8 years old, and a total sweetie! For months she has been telling me that her father is threatening to "let Color loose" or to take Color to the BSPCA. But he never does. Today I was chatting with her on MSNM, and she began telling me that this time her father was really serious about letting Color go. That he was going to take him to the BSPCA in a few days. I seriously didn't know what to say. Finally, I told her that if he was going to take Color to the bspca, that she should tell me, because I volunteer there, and I would try to make him as comfortable as possible, and help the best I can. So then I asked her why her father wanted to get rid of Color so bad. She said *shudder* because he was....old. Because (and this is what she told me today) he was old and was going to die soon and her father didn't want her to go through the pain of his death so he wants to take him away. Her father also said he would get her a Bull Terrier and a German Shepard after that....ummm excuse me?
Unfortunatly, after I wrote all that it got erased. Thankfully I saved it and am able to post it! Deez and I really don't want to hurt our friend's feelings, our insult her. I really want my friend to stop getting/breeding dogs in the future. She can love dogs, but not own them. I also really need to save Color. I volunteer at the BSCPA, and i'll make him as comfotable as possible there. Hey, I'll try and find a home for him too! But my friend's father really wants to let Color loose, not take him to the BSPCA. I'm sure I don't make sence. I'm just so confused and really want to make Color's life easier, without hurting my friend in the process!
